What do you like about maintenance?
Let's get some positive mojo going about maintenance! What has gone well for you? What do you like about it? Any pleasant surprises? I'm pretty new to maintenance and I love that my body is still changing, my clothes are still getting looser, even though my weight is the same.

Food Portion Size Quick Guide
Here is a handy reference tool for portion sizes. It's great when you're not near a food scale, such as eating out or travelling. Most carb and protein portions are about the size of a deck of cards or a baseball. Another good guide is a clenched fist. Veggies don't matter as much, because they are lower cal to begin with.…

Recomp: Is this right?
Now that I'm in my maintenance range, after losing 148 lbs, I looked into the recomp threads. What I get out of it is recomp means to eat at maintenance calories and lift weights, and this will help you continue to lose fat and build muscle. Is this correct? I'm already doing this and didn't know it was recomp, lol. My…

Goblet squats
There have been a few threads by people getting injured during back squats. Front squats and goblet squats force you maintain proper form, but not everyone is familiar with them. Here is a blog that came across my feed today about goblet squats. Hope it helps someone. No affiliation.…

Lat pull down at home?
Can you do a lat pull down with a resistance band anchored in the center, or does that not allow the correct motion? Are there any other substitutes besides a dumbbell pullover (per NROLFW) which I understand is not a perfect substitute?. TIA.

NROLW vs SL 5x5
For those familiar with both programs, how would you compare the differences/similarities of NROLW vs SL 5x5. I've looked at NROLW and am considering it, just wondered how it compares to SL 5x5 which is also frequently mentioned here. My goals are overall functional fitness for life, general strength and endurance for…

My key to maintaining motivation and control during the holidays
I prefer #2 over #1. If I don't want to go back to #1, I need to stay on track. #1. June 2014. 301 lbs #2. Nov 2016, 155 lbs

Please explain the labels for fitness and strength goals
I'm having difficulty translating my personal fitness goals into the labels used for various types of workouts and routines. I want to be stronger and have more endurance in my everyday life activities for work and fun. I have made more progress than I ever thought possible the last 2+ years under the guidance of trainer.…

Adjustable dumbbell bars/plates
Any tips for working out with adjustable dumbbell bars/plates (generic, not the fancy sets)? I thought these would be a good solution to not having a full DB/KB set available (my fitness studio is closing). They feel kind of awkward. I'm used to doing upright rows with a KB at my gym studio. Today I tried it with the…

Back in the pool
Hello, I got back in the pool today for the first time in 15-20 years. It's a little bit of a drive for me, but worth it. So excited to be back. I just enjoy it for fitness, never a competitive swimmer or anything like that. I did 12 laps today which I was pleased with. Lots of breaks, but I don't mind. I'll look into…

What is your biggest SUCCESS with your eating habits?
Let's start a positive and motivating thread. Instead of focuising on our downfalls of eating, let's share our successes, no matter how small. You are what you think, so let's think about eating successes. One success for me has been using the Foreman grill many nights for dinner. I marinate or dry season my protein, such…

I Can't Beleive I Ran the Whole Thing!
26 1/2 months ago, at age 59, I could barely walk ¼ mile without excruciating foot, knee, and hip pain. I weighed nearly twice what I should and felt worse with every passing year. I started working with a personal trainer doing strength training, walked as far as I could with plenty of rest stops, and started logging my…

No-cook breakfasts
I usually have cooked oatmeal or some form of eggs for breakfast, but some days I just don't feel like cooking to eat breakfast. What kind of "breakfast food" do you like for breakfast that doesn't require cooking? I don't care for the weird texture of refrigerator oats, although I love cooked oats. Boxed cereal doesn't…

Margin of error in hydrotank BF?
My friend and I both got our body fat tested in the hydro tank yesterday. We each were about 5% higher than our trainer thinks makes sense based on his visual assessment and knowledge of our progress and abilities (meaning he knows us well and neither of us are so-called skinny-fat). The difference between us (4%) does…

Prepping for stair climbing
I'm going to do an event that involves climbing 800+ stairs in a row. I don't have access to stairs to get ready (literally my only stairs are 4 steps up to my porch, no tall buildings nearby), so what are the best exercises to do? I'm thinking lots of lunges, calf raises, and step ups. I say calf raises because my calves…

Recipe book: Clean Soups
I saw this cookbook while browsing in a bookstore this weekend. Lots of good ideas and a great "template" for creating tasty soups. Some of the recipes are a little stricter than I care for, but overall a well done book.…

Flooring hacks?
This is weird title, but here's the situation. When I workout at home, it is in a mult-purpose area that has floating laminate flooring. I do a lot of TRX and when I get at a steep angle for rows or chest presses, etc., I slip on the floor. I got some interlocking foam floor pads, but they slip on top of the floor too.…
