Wait til you're old to begin a sport
After avoiding sports since childhood, I took up cycling in my 50's. To everyone's surprise, I can keep up with people who have been athletes all their lives. We joke that my advantage is that they have a lifetime's worth of sports-related injuries (bad knees, old fractures, etc). Obviously this isn't a serious…

Cottage cheese vs Oatmeal for breakfast.
I used to eat oatmeal and fruit for breakfast, but now I eat cottage cheese and fruit. One half cup of rolled oats has 190 calories and 7 grams of protein. One half cup of 2% cottage cheese has 90 calories and 11 grams of protein. It seems like the cottage cheese is a better choice. The oatmeal has more fiber but I get…

Substitutes for lifts?
I sometimes have limited access to weights, and I was wondering if using a rowing machine is comparable to doing barbell rows, and if push-ups can substitute for bench press. I know that any workout is better than nothing, but wondered if I'm hitting all of the same muscle groups.

Struggling with Stonglifts 5x5
I am a 57 year old female cyclist, 5'6" 122 lbs. I ride at least 100 miles a week. I do body weight exercises like planks and pushups, and also work with 10 and 15 pound dumbbells. I thought I was ready for a "real" lifting program so I downloaded the Stronglifts app. OMG. I couldn't lift the 45 lb bar, so I started with…

Weightlifting only once a week?
I'm thinking of joining a gym to start weightlifting, but the reality is that I won't be able to go more than once a week. Will I still get some benefit, or does it have to be done 2 or 3 times a week to get results? If it makes a difference, I am a 57 year old female cyclist. I don't need to lose weight, just get some…

Calorie deficit for cyclists
I've been reading the threads on body recomp, and they seem to say you can't build muscles during a calorie deficit. I've also read that you shouldn't do cardio stuff like cycling if you want to get stronger. How does this apply to cyclists? I've lost about 14 lbs in the past year through cutting calories, and I've become…

My doctor noticed my ab muscles
Today during a physical exam, the doctor pressed on my belly and commented on my strong ab muscles. It was nice to hear because I've been working hard on my abs but can't see much difference in my appearance. Now I'm motivated to keep at it!

My joints creak, crack, crunch, and pop!
I want to get strong, but every time I try to do any weight lifting or resistance training, my joints complain loudly! Usually it's just annoying but sometimes it's painful. I asked my doctor and she said it's normal for a woman my age. I am a 57 - year-old female, 5'6", and weigh 122 lbs. I can ride a bike without…

Does my home-made vegan protein powder have all the essential amino acids?
I have developed food allergies to many of the common vegan protein sources such as soy, quinoa, hemp, and pea powder. I don't want to use any dairy or egg-based products. I have been mixing up a protein powder that includes flax seed, chia , nutritional yeast, spirulina, and raw cacao powder. I can tolerate this okay…
