Gaining muscle while at a calorie deficit
Physiologically speaking - it is, of course, possible to gain muscle while at a calorie deficit. The general mantra "you can't gain muscle at a calorie deficit" makes sense because it's difficult to have BIG gains at a deficit and something else is going on... I decided to look at the equations on TDEE, BMR, etc and see if…

Your BMR varies ... a lot
At least 3% to 5% between different evaluations... Race? 4% versus equations... Winter? up to 50% (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7827002) Pregnancy? TOM? Carry on... but remember that what you observe and adjust has greater value than the "numbers". As these changes occur, make (mostly minor and measureable) course…

Poems about ....
Well, a friend's newsfeed update made me think of this great poem. This is just to say I have eaten the plums that were in the icebox and which you were probably saving for breakfast Forgive me they were delicious so sweet and so cold -William Carlos Williams, 1934 What have you got?

Foods with low cal to protein ratios?
Post up. I'm looking for increased protein in natural food at lower cal "costs". My suggestion for the day: Yoplait Petit Suisse 0% - It is 6 g protein for 33 cal per serving. That is only 5.5 cal/g of protein. My protein powder is only a little better at 4.1 cal/g. Lean ground beef (95%) is 6.75 cal/g. Leerdammer Original…

NSV - my gym partner today was my daughter
One of my goals is to do thing with my daughters - trekking, travel, hiking and two years ago I did RAGBRAI - a great party ride across Iowa with 12000 people or more - with my then 16 year-old oldest daughter. I cycle on a tandem with my two youngest but my second daughter has often been impermeable to some of these…

Toxic thoughts - Schopenhauer, Tyler Durden and Matisse
It seems that the sense of self and the glossy fashion media are at war with each other. With the cannon fodder of impossible, beautiful and sexy young women being splashed right and left across these women's magazines, clothes advertisements and of course, the 5th column in the living room, the TV, what is a normal person…

I am going to ... for the next 90 days
My commitment of the next 90 days. 3 Months. Short term measurable goals and activities are usually easier to achieve than vague long term objectives. So in writing this, I'm trying to see what kind of health+ objectives I can set up for the next 3 months. My overall objective is health and fitness related. I want to…

Why do people not allow the "under 1200" friend requests
I've seen many people in their profile state that "if you eat under 1200 cals/day I won't accept your friend request". Yes, I understand that there are people with eating disorders that might want to promote their lifestyle. But how is that so very different from someone with a weight problem on the other extreme. Are we…

NSV - lifestyles changes, my daughter is here
So, in my voyage to better health, fitness, etc. I have a new teammate. My daughter joined MFP - she is going off to college, has decided she want to take better care of herself and joined .... Well, the fact that we agreed that the value of a new smartphone was using it for a health quest might have also been a small…

What behaviour/attitude led you down the fat path?
I have a brother that is morbidly obese (he must weigh well above 300 lbs and he is about 5ft9) and I worry about him. We've had discussions about his lifestyle choices, health education, genetics and our attitudes and behaviours towards our bodies. But for the time being he is not doing much about it. He "likes life too…

How do you measure your health and well-being?
I see a lot of posts about target weight and much focus here is on losing weight but I personally would like to focus and therefore measure my health and quality of life. I've seen a variety of methods over the years (CDC / WHO, etc) and have used some randomly as they were available in my HRM tools. Just found this short…

... rancid cow patties. "This miracle pill can burn fat fast." What utter nonsense. It's a shame that MFP allows such advertising.

The malapropism thread or loose vs lose
Just saying. I plan to lose the weight that will make my pants too loose. My brain is loose, it jiggles about. If I lose my brain will you help me find it. Any malapropism that make you giggle, laugh, grunt or snort? Quote them in this thread.

Hi from Germany
I'm sort of a permanent expat here in Germany - 45, a guy - travel too much, desk job, but active cycling. Just joining and at 97 kg, 1.8m (that's about 200 at 6 ft) have a bit to lose. But more importantly I want to tone back up. So. Let's see if i can get this done -- gone to try the 30 day shred. Los geht's!
