The Last Goodbye
I threw out my last box of tampons today. I had kept them around, not sure when the right time to toss them would be. It's been 14 months since I lasted needed them. It feels like an important life moment. A farewell forever, albeit a very welcome one. It also feels a bit anticlimactic. Seems like I should somehow mark the…

It's Official
I just passed the 12 month mark. I am celebrating the next stage of my life (though somewhat cautiously after having read some posts about women still getting a random period after one year). Nonetheless, I am so happy to have reached this milestone. I was very fortunate in that my experience was not that bad. Yes there…

Transition to Maintenance
For those who have reached their weight loss goal and are currently in maintenance mode, what sorts of changes did you make as you transitioned from losing weight to maintenance. Did you increase your daily calories? Did your exercise activity level change?

When do you stop feeling fat
I've lost a considerable amount of weight. I feel really, really good and proud about this. My clothing used to be size 3x or 24. Now I wear a size M or S and size 10. While I see and know that my body is a smaller size, there are still those moments when I feel big. I know this feeling will diminish over time but will it…

Why Calories Count
Marion Nestle has a new book out, Why Calories Count. I've read a couple of her previous works and found them very informative. I'm about halfway through the new book and am already learning so much. What I most appreciate is her scientic (but not overly technical) approach to providing factual information about calories…

Losing the final pounds
I have had a very good journey thus far and am nearing the end. My challenge is that my weight loss has stopped over the past three months. Prior to that I was consistently losing 5-6 pounds per month. At the end of 2011 I was eating too few calories, about 1250 per day. I increased that amount at the beginning of February…

Now Merely Overweight
When I started my weight loss effort in July 2009, my BMI was 50.3, morbidly obese. Today I am at 29.9, the overweight category. My goal is to reach the top of the normal range by this June. It has been a long journey but one so worth the effort in order to regain my life.

Receiving Compliments and Shame
I recently attended a dinner where I saw a large number of people I had not seen in a long while. All were very complimentary on my new appearance. Hearing their kind words was wonderful and inspirational validation for all my efforts over the past year and a half. There is a small part of me that also feels shame at…

How Far I Have Walked
My story begins 15 months ago. At the time I weighed 266 pounds. My journey started with small steps – literally. I walked one block and back, huffing and puffing all the way. Next I added healthier foods to my diet and slowly cut back on portion size. I saw progress and my steps increased. Three months in, I was walking…

Weight Loss Pace
I am wondering if the pace of weight loss slows down as you reach your goal weight. I have been losing weight at a steady pace since I started last July. I am averaging about 6 pounds per month. My hope is to reach my goal weight by July 2012. What I don't know is if I will be able to maintain the 6 pounds per month as my…

Milestone Moment
A milestone moment for me today. Finally below 40 on my BMI. I am now at 39.9  Much more to go but this little achievement is very nice.
