Protein Bar suggestions
I have loved Quest bars but the formula change has made them less palatable so I am looking for something new. My criteria:* No more than 200 calories * At least 15g protein (20 is preferable) * No more than $1.90 per bar (the price I have been getting my Quest for) * Easily accessible (mail order is fine) Suggestions?

I Love Seeing the Red
OK, I will qualify this: I love seeing the red in my fiber that I track. More and more, I am realizing how important fiber is for many things:* it keeps you satisfied longer * it fills you up faster * it helps the body metabolize glucose better * it helps the digestive system (especially the bowels) work better My Dad died…

Some thoughts on motivation
Wall of text alert!!!!!!! Lately I have been asked by a number of people "what motivates you to keep going?" and "I need motivation, can you help me?" I'll address the second question first. No I cannot motivate you. I can encourage you. I can lead by example. I can put my experiences out there for others to see, emulate,…

Product recommendation (no, I do not sell or get any kind of kickback)
If anyone is interested in a waterproof MP3 for swimming or other watersports I highly recommend the waterproof IPod from Audioflood. I bought one last Christmas (a gift to myself with gift money) and love it. I now have a reason to love it even more. The earphones stopped working this week. I tested them (and the IPod)…

Glucose dump
Does anybody else experience a glucose dump with exercise? I usually get home from my water exercise class about 30 minutes before dinner and my evening BS reading is usually 10-15 points higher on those days. I see my doctor in a couple of weeks and will be discussing it with her but I was wondering if anyone else gets…

A Tale of Obsession and Burnout
This summer, I started to become obsessed with my step count. I spent as much time as possible out walking and getting my count high. My goal has been to stay between 70,000 and 80,000 per week but I found myself aiming much higher. Part of me was thinking "Oh, you can't sustain these numbers all of your life" but another…

Drum Ball
I was driving past a park in the town where my mom lives and there were a bunch of women in the park drumming on exercise balls. I googled it and apparently this is the newest fitness craze. Anybody do it? Anybody familiar with it? What kind of workout do you get?

Tested myself . . . and I passed!
I spent these last four days up in the Apostle Islands kayaking Lake Superior. I love water and being out on the water (as well as swimming in the water). One thing I really wanted was to challenge myself physically and see what I can do now that I am regaining my health. I amazed myself. An entire day on the water (with a…

Finally!
I have been flirting with a 60 minute mile for a while now (I swim breast stroke only because of shoulder issues). I have been averaging 64 minute miles and have gotten down to 62 minutes several times. Monday I finally did it! I even had a new best time on Wed. when I got a 58 minute mile! What do I do? I have now added…

For anyone afraid to put on a swimming suit
I was at my pool swimming my laps when a gentleman got out of the warm water therapy pool in the same section of the fitness center, He had been walking in shoulder high water. He had a hard time walking on the pool deck because he was (by my uneducated guess) somewhere close to 500 lb. More power to him! I hope he keeps…

Dish for a Potluck
Scenario: I am going to a 4th of July pig roast (known around here as a spänferkel) and need to bring a dish to pass. No appetizers because there will be plenty left over from the appetizer/drink party the night before. Difficulty: it needs to be something that can be prepared almost 2 days ahead and doesn't require actual…

Eggs
We have a regional gas station/convenience store called Kwik Trip (Wisconsin, SEastern Minnesota, and NEastern Iowa). They have really good coffee and are known for their fresh and inexpensive eggs and dairy (other food items are typical convenience store prices). Well, with the egg shortage right now due to the bird flu,…

Water withdrawal
My pool is closed for this week and most of next week so they can install a new HVAC system. I am having withdrawal from my 3 x a week swimming! I was hoping to get out in a kayak a couple of days for an upper body workout but the weather has not been good (either cold and windy or rain/thunderstorms). Praying for a quick…

There is a Onederland and I have seen it
Weighed in this morning at 199.8!! Chances are good I will still bounce around it a little, but there is a Onederland and I have been there. I will be making it my permanent residence. This is the first time I have seen it since around 2001. Next stop is to get out of the obese BMI (8 more pounds), then the final push to…

Garmin vs. Fitbit
I have had a Fitbit Flex for a long time and am very happy with it. One thing it doesn't have that I would like is a watch function. I am thinking it will be time to replace it in the not too distant future and am looking at the Garmin Vivofit2. My question is, and hopefully this will be answered by someone who has used…

Happy National Trails Day!
June 6 is National Trails Day so why not find a trail near you and go for a nice walk or run or bicycle ride (or horseback ride if it is allowed). Show your appreciation for these pathways, whether ancient or new, that allow us to see parts of our environment that we cant see from the streets and highways. Many trails go…
