Fasting Day

I find it very hard to have energy on my fasting days. I try not to schedule anything so I can just go home from work and sit on the couch and watch tv while I starve. It just doesn't seem right.

I'm the type of person that has to eat, I am not diabetic but I definitely feel lightheaded if I go more than two hours without snacking. Unless of course I have a huge fattening meal, then I can go longer.

Any ideas on how to make it though a fast day a little easier?

Today is only my 5th fast day. Fortunately for me I can put off eating, so I don't eat until after noon. The other thing I try to do is make my day as short as possible by going to bed early, which is easy for me because I get up 4:30-5:00 in the AM. I also save most of my food until later, but am considering shifting until earlier. Regardless, I try not to eat after 8 PM.

I'm with mwhite - I don't eat until 1:00 pm which is a low calorie soup. I'll have some veggies around 3:00 pm then won't eat again until 7:00 pm. Then I'm off to bed at 9:30 pm :)

My go-to's are: pickle spears (5 cal each), grapes (~2 cal each), fiber gummies (5 cal + 2.5 grams of fiber), strawberries (med ~3 cal), sometimes almonds (~7 cal each, a little too much for the size). Don't forget water, I do 16+ oz's every time I eat any of these. When I drink water first and wait a couple of minutes sometimes I decide not to eat anything.

Since about 6 weeks in I do this less and less...yesterday's fast (still in it...at 40.5 hours right now) I had a medium pickle and 8 grapes at ~16 hours, then at about the 24 hour mark I ate 2 lbs 3 oz of a chicken and shrimp low mein (with cabbage and shirataki noodles) at 542 cal. Last Thursday I did a 45 hour fast on zero cal the 1st 42 and 100 cal of dark chocolate the last 3. I ranged roughly 16 lbs last week (from my highest to my lowest). Last week on Monday I had a huge chicken/shrimp fajita salad (589 cal). The fast before that my big meal was ~2 lbs of chicken and mushroom curry (559 cal). You can still eat big...really big, you just have to surround yourself with the right stuff. So...

...don't despair. It will get easier the more fasts you get under your belt.

There are a bunch of recipes/ideas in:

    and

Also, just an FYI...I do take supplements...a Multivitamin, a Probiotic, Omega-3's (concentrated fish oil), and Nac-Acetyl Cysteine. Plus the fiber gummies I mentioned above.

I agree with oricam. If you stick with veggies (high water content, low starch veggies) you can fill your plate a few times. Add a bit of protein and voila - a perfect fast.

Now that fall has arrived, I gone back to making my own veggie soups and supplement them with chia seeds, shrimp, eggs, chicken for my protein. I usually eat 2 meals on a fast day. (smaller lunch / larger dinner). I've started to keep a few cals for an evening snack, as the time from 20h to bed time is the hardest for me.

As far as the light headedness goes - a bouillon or a small piece of fruit tide me over well. Sometimes it's the salt, sometimes it's the blood sugar that need a kick.

Flumi - do you want to share your veggie soup recipe? I would love to make my own soup and not buy the salty canned soups! I see we have a thread with all our old recipes...yours needs to be included (hint hint!!) :)

Thank you everyone. I went over last night (670), I didn't really need to but I just gave in. I bought more low calorie foods and I am going to start using stevia in my coffee and tea. Two cups of coffee equals 50 calories for me. I could eat instead!! I bought spinach and shrimp too.

@carlsoda - would love to, but I don't really have one ;-) I'm an 'open up the fridge and see what we have cook'. But making your own soup is a piece of cake! The possibilities are endless.

Cut up any veggies in the fridge and an onion, a bit of olive oil , sautee the onion in the pot for a few minutes, add all the veggies, do the same, add bouillon and spices of choice, a bit of tomato paste (30g) is always good for the taste, cover veggies with water and boil til cooked. If you want to, blend until smooth, add a bit of sambal oelek, creme fraiche (20-30g).

I usually use about 0.5-1kg of veggies for a soup. That'll give me 1-2L of soup at about 150cal/500g. Then there is still room for some protein, an egg and 100g chicken, for example.

Mondays soup was with bell pepper, carrots and Zucchini with italian spices
Thursdays is with cauliflower, fennel, carrots, fresh lemon gras, garam masala. It's in the fridge and ready to go for tomorrow.

Hey...I thought you really blew it (based on the "news feed"). Instead of getting down on yourself you should be pumped that you did 670 calories. That's still a good day...you definitely got a nice calorie deficit. It's ok to shift that # around until you find your groove. I see nothing wrong here...move along.

@Tiamo719 670 is awesome! It's definitely more important to eat when you're hungry than just sticking to a number and starving. I've always had higher fast days (600-800 range) and let myself just hit a calorie deficit if I can't make it or something comes up. You can always move your fast day when you are feeling more "mentally" ready.

Just think, those extra 170 calories are only .04 of a pound...totally not worth starving! Plus, making the diet easier to stick to should be the top priority! You will definitely lose more weight adding more calories on your fast days to make it easier than starving and giving up :)

Tiamo: I usually do like carbmonster and have been 600 -750 cals. on fasting days because I do 4:3 most weeks.

I couldn't do a 4:3, that would put me over the edge

Tiamo, I've done partial 4:3's and it's not as bad as you would think. I do the full fasts (500 calories) twice a week and one day a partial just to reduce my calories a tiny bit more. I did that two weeks in a row and I didn't find it too hard. Vacation has thrown me for a loop but next week I'll be back on track!

Curiosity-what kind of results did you get?
