All the best with everything Shades. I've used black salve on my husband and it seems very good.
Off to bed for me, it's 1am.0 -
RATSMITH69 wrote: »Hello to everyone,
I'm not 50 yet but seem to be sliding that way much faster than I would like. Hope y'all don't mind if I join in.
I have only been doing the hflc thing for a few weeks and just this week started on a fat fast. My doc is a doll and tries very hard to do natural before drugs so I'm going with it. I have Hashimoto's due to head trauma, type II diabeties, and I'm currently dealing with some skin cancer issues that should be resolved within the next few weeks (surgery & radiation).
I love this site, love the group, and really love this sub group!! Everyone is truly supportive and tries to help without putting people down.
Thanks everyone!
Welcome! Of course, join in.
Congrats on those seeing some progress with tweaks. Thank goodness that with age comes (some) patience. Slow downward creep for me also, very slow but I'm ok with it; have settled in to the 1375 calorie level + some exercise calories; 5%, 75%, 20%. Averaging 0.5lb / week, actually less than that now because that includes the big water woosh at the beginning, 8 weeks ago.0 -
shadesofidaho wrote: »Welcome Ratsmith69,
Just heading out to the dentist then doctor for hubby. Wish us luck. Praying for clear CAT scan and blood work results. Just wanted to say Hi. I have also worked with skin cancer. Last go round was the Flouracil (spelling?) cream. Same chemo they pumped into me hubby YIKES.It was not as effective as I had hoped. Tomorrow is my doctor day and we will see what he decided to do about the most stubborn spots. I think I will just go back to my trusty black salve and take care of it myself. Good luck with your surgery and radiation.
Good luck, positive thoughts your way. I had the flouracil treatment on the end of my nose a couple of years ago. Thankfully it worked but it was stubborn and it took time. My nose looked awful for a while!0 -
I've had most of mine surgically removed but there are a few spots that we are hoping radiation will take care of. Finding it made me very aware of other issues that I need to be taking care of too, like my weight. No real loss yet in lbs or inches but I'll get there.
shadesofidaho - hope everything goes well for hubby today and you tomorrow. I will be sending good thoughts and vibes your way!
and thanks again everyone for the warm welcome0 -
Argh still waiting..........

We are home. PHEW. There are two spots on /in Joe's lung. About the same as last time 3 months ago. At this point they want to wait another three months to scan and see how it is looking. His cancer antigen marker is still within normal range but up. Many things can make it go up. Like a cold which Joe has had. The doctor thinks the spots are more scaring from all the pneumonia he had in the hospital. They were talking respiratory failure for awhile. I was so afraid for him. But they got him through it and it took months, over 6, for that to heal where he did not have to be on oxygen and in wheel chair. So at this point we wait and see unless some thing comes up. The stress level is not really lowered I need to think positive. I worry about everything.
Tomorrow my turn at the doctors. I am not worried about that. Thanks for the good thoughts.0 -
That is some great news!! Let's get that man healthy. And you, too, @shadesofidaho!0
-
Thanks Knit. Working on it. today I only did half a mile in Walmart. LOL Cat stuff is stocked up. I only had to do the grocers side. But I also walked over to the other extension of the hospital where we were to get a report for Joe. Logged another half mile brisk walking.0

@Shades It's all sounding very hopeful. I'm sorry it's not more concrete 'yes, everything's perfect' for you, but heading in the right direction. Try to join the specialist in his optimism as best you can. I know you are doing that.0

Thanks so much for the encouragement. Been doing the best to keep him healthy. Oncologist said the rest of his blood work is perfect and amazed because he is almost 75 next month.
I went to the doc yesterday and more continued thyroid, a little bit more skin cancer on my face and hand to deal with and a science project to see if adding back the dropped second acid blocker might have an effect on my psoriasis coming back. Slim chance but possible as it was clear for a long time, months, then suddenly started back. Yes this is normal for psoriasis but I did make a change in dropping half my acid blocker dose prior to it coming back. I had increased the acid blocker when I got so heavy and was chocking on reflux constantly. Just trying to figure all of this out. Doc said there is some thing in the acid blocker that just might have an effect on the psoriasis Not a cure but maybe better than cortisone which I have bad reactions to. Will let you all know.
I slept three hours when we got home yesterday then got up did evening chores and went to bed. I slept the night and still feel like I have been clobbered. Stress does that to me. Trying to get a grip. I think this is a day to pamper me and go break some glass and sniff some glue. Mosaic glue just to make that clear I am not a glue sniffer. It is a joke.
Have a good one ladies.0 -
To ShadesofIdaho:
Gosh, you are dealing with a lot of stress right now. Don't forget to give care to the caregiver........
Have you ever tried relaxation meditations? I have found them very helpful. You get to lay down, close your eyes, and passively follow the voice . That requires your attention to shift away from your worries.
Sometimes I listen to classical music laying down with closed eyes, and focus on the variations of orchestra sections, trying to identify the different instuments. Noticing the changes in volume and speed of the music, etc. I am not a huge music lover but the intricasies of classical music work well for engaging the brain.
These techniques also help me if I am tired and stressed and have just decided eating something will solve the problem.
Wishing you and your hubby a better day ahead!

I'm 59 and considering low carb - glad I found you ladies, I will start soon and I will need your expertise0
-
@Shades Oh Honey, I wish I had a magic wand for you! Hoping that you have a really good night's sleep and wake up... well, with all the problems gone actually, but at the very least feeling stronger and more energetic! Let's hope the change in meds is a positive one for you and that it acts quickly!
@RisiM Welcome to the Group, and this thread in particular. You're very welcome here and yes, ask away. We will do our very best to tell you what has worked for us. Everyone is slightly different but there are some things in common for us wiser girls that are certainly not true for younger or male LCHFers.
Yesterday I had a 'high' protein day at 84 grams. I usually aim for around 70, or definitely between 60 and 80 at the outside. Today I'm up 400 grams where I'd been having a downward trend lately. Interesting! I even had 100 calories under my 1450 goal, so it's not that I overate. I love to weigh daily to watch for cause and effect. Usually there are several variables and it's hard to track down *which one* causes gains or loses but I enjoy the challenge LOL So today I will try to keep within my protein goal and see what I shall see as to the outcome.0 -
@Yturie, I love the relaxation and meditatioin music. I get most of mine from youtube. I have a few things on disk but prefer youtube and listen in bed as I am going to sleep using my kindle. This is an almost every night thing. EXCEPT last night when I ran the battery down on my kindle dragging it around with me to the doctors waiting rooms. I was asleep in a flash though. I was just so mentally worn out. today has been better. I have worked hard around here burning up stress by purging just stuff and catching up on being gone for two days and also doing a few projects I have wanted to do for a long time. Happy to have them done and we have another load to take to the dump. AFTER I sort the shop loft again.
@RisiM Welcome. Jump in any time you are ready. One thing I suggest is if you are planning to go low carb start reducing a week or two before you go full throttle. It makes it easier for your body to come down off its sugar drug of choice. Maybe not as much carb flue feeling. Have potassium and magnesium on hand. And gather all your foods or at least list them to have planned to buy. Most things are fresh so do not get them too soon before starting. I find I shop the outer isle of the grocery store and forget the interior isles of processed foods.
It is also good to read through the Launch pad at the top of this page.

@Shades - looks like we were posting at the same time. I wrote one for you above...0

@GrannyMayOZ, thanks for letting me know I would have missed it. SO my weight was not really up today but I was up yesterday from the day before. I should have been down today because we totally skipped a meal for the day. I added quick calories but I did not eat them. I needed to get to at least 1000 to finish my day. I do know I have been eating some more carbs from my normal but still staying almost at 20. I think I went over yesterday or the day before. I forget. BUT those are veggie carbs and I count all carbs not net. I would be well within my range if I were counting NET as Atkins says to do. I figure by counting all it gives me leeway if I do not track some thing correctly.
I just do not know what makes the weight bounce like it does. I have usually been under in my protein. I am not working out and do not need to maintain muscle. I probable could stand to lose some muscle. LOL Table muscle I call it. Hehehe
It was a good day today. I was really busy and this always makes me feel good. Hoping to get up in the loft tomorrow for a purge of things up there. I am so sick of things around. Just like my extra weight I am packing. It all has to go. I want everything clean and fresh.0 -
Thanks GrannyMayOz x0

@shadesofidaho where can we see your mosaic work? I love a good mosaic.0

No worries Shades, and it's so good to hear you sounding bright and cheery today. Sounds like you're on a cleansing mission
I've just done an hour's gardening. Sweeping up leaves, weeding, that kind of thing and I guess it's a good sign towards feeling more energetic. I had a 'funny turn' at lunch. Just as well I was sitting down because one minute I was happily eating and the next thing the world did a lurch and went black, my head spun, and then I came back to reality. Took me about an hour to feel like eating the remaining 90% of my meal, though I felt fairly normal quickly enough. All of these health things are just not who I am and I'm starting to feel more than a little fed up. I can only presume it has all been a long slow 'keto flu' because I didn't have an obvious version of it. This is my 44th day - *surely* it's over now? Though I still feel really tired. I'm choosing to think that the diet is healing my poor abused body and will give me energy as soon as it can *sigh*0 -
I may have answered my own question, and I really hope I have. This article ketogenic-diet-resource.com/reactive-hypoglycemia.html talks about going onto a ketogenic diet too quickly from a state of severe insulin resistance/inflammation and resultant symptoms, about half of which I've suffered over the past 44 days...
heart palpitations or fibrillation
dizziness
light-headedness
sweating
headaches
nervousness
irritability
shaking and tremors
flushing
craving for sweets
intense hunger
nausea, vomiting
panic attack
numbness/coldness in the extremities
fatigue and shakiness for hours afterwards
Although I don't want to spoil my ketogenic state, perhaps I should 'up my carbs' for a short while and then come back down again. I'm sick and tired of being tired and sick, though I *know* with all my heart that this is the right way to eat!!! I perhaps just need to not quite be in such a rush about things I can't believe I haven't 'come through the other side' by now, but we're talking 47 years of sugar and carb abuse so I really do need to be patient and sensible. Maybe it takes 47 days to undo 47 years' damage and I'll be sweet by next Wednesday LOL0 -
Before I start I'm really concerned about constipation did read that magnesium citrate is good - does anyone use this? I have kept my carbs under the recommended Mfp limit for a while but find if I have any bread it makes me 'look for food'. I read Eat Fat by Dr Trudi Deakin and that says on Mfp set carbs to 10%, protein 30% and fat at 60%, would that seem ok?0

Hello everyone, Just checking in.
@Shades - hope everything continues on an upswing for you and the hubby.
@Granny - hope you are feeling better by now. I was lucky enough (so far) to skip the keto flu thingy. I hope yours works itself out soon.
@RisiM - welcome, these ladies are fabulous and you will love it here!
Yesterday was a bit rough for me but Thursdays usually are. 7 weeks in and only 5 more to go with the radiation. So ready for it to be over with.
But on a good note I've finished my fat fast. Some mild GI issues but noting to horrible, a little weakness yesterday but that was probably other things, and it seems to have been a success. Went back to the Doc this morning and I'm down - - - ready??! - - 12 lbs and a total of 3 inches (hips and waist). While my brain is well aware that half - or more - of this is water weight my heart it turning cartwheels at being in the 180s (only barely but 189 IS in the 180s!!). I'm sure I will put some of it back on as I go back to eating lchf but I'll enjoy the day anyway and deal with the numbers later.
We here in Austin are still freezing but it is going to be a beautiful day!!0 -
@totaloblivia, My mosaics and house yard animals are all together on Flicker.

Hahahaha view at your own risk there is some crazy stuff going on here. Even the toilets are mosaic. When hubby spent so much time sick from chemo all I could think was when life gives you *kitten* mosaic the toilets. I am taking a short break from the hallway wall project. It is eleven foot long and so far 40 inches tall and I needed to get a fresh look at it.. I am working on a silly little project now then back to the wall as time permits.
@GrannyMay, I hope your heart settles down. If you are staying about 20 carbs for already a month or so I would think all of this should stop for you. I went through it all for about 3 weeks in the beginning. None of it any more. I was/am also severely insulin resistant. Have to be for the way I abused sugar.
@ResiM I wish I had started the fiber powder right from the beginning, I really suffered with constipation. I am using the Sugar Free version of Equate daily. It is 4 carbs 3 are fiber. I just leave room in my carbs for the fiber. It works really well for me is tasteless and does not make a gel like glob yuck. I usually put it in my coffee and do not even know it is there but it does help move things along. Not a laxative though.
@Ratsmith69, Thank you.0 -
@RATSMITH Thank you so much for your wishes. I am definitely ready to move beyond this stage!!! But I know I shouldn’t whinge because there are so many enduring worse than my few woes. Radiation treatment can’t be any fun and I hope with you that it’s soon over and, moreso, successful! You seem to have gone so well with your fat fast, congratulations! Oh wow….. 12 lbs is **amazing**!!! And congrats on the 180s too. I hope you don’t bounce up too much. Hopefully with keeping the fat in your diet it might stay a loss? There seem to be a lot of members from around Texas and the South. My husband has a distant cousin in Lake Charles – is LA the code for Louisiana?
@Shades Thank you. My heart has got better each day. I’ve given up the mild coffee I was drinking – that set it off on 3 separate attempts to drink it, yet a small dose of my husband’s stronger coffee is fine and I’m drinking that happily. Both are Moccona brand. I wonder if my mild one was tainted with something awful by accident? I keep looking to see if it’s been recalled ROFL Still quite tired today with a slight ‘sugar low’ feeling before lunch, but so far this is my best day since the heart palpitations. I shouldn’t be getting sugar lows, but I’m improving in health so I’ll take it as a transitory thing on the way to better And yes, I’ve rarely gone above 20 carbs in 44 days. I had a fasting blood sugar reading done a few months ago that was a bit high (according to the nurse) but it was 5.7 and I think you use different numbers (which is no surprise).
@RisiM I haven’t had any trouble with constipation at all so I really hope that will be your experience too.

@RATSMITH69 @GrannyMayOz I'm from Kansas (KS) originally, lived in Texas (TX) most of my formative years, and moved to Oklahoma (OK) around the time I turned 30. I miss Texas like you wouldn't believe, even though Oklahoma isn't that far away. And yes, LA is the code for Louisiana. If you care: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_abbreviations0

Thanks Knit. I will try not to call you Dorothy because I guess there are quite a lot of other people from Kansas too.0
-
I was born in Missouri but my family farm is in Kansas. I never lived either place as I had to be given up for adoption and went to Puerto Rico. Adoptive father was in the Navy.0
-
Shades!!! Oh wow, you've lead an interesting life. I hope it's been a happy one though?
I was born in England and lived there until I was 15. Then we set sail for Australia and I've lived in Perth ever since. Met my also-English-born husband 7 months after arriving here.0
