Holy smokes, @mrswhitehog that sounds terrible! It sounds like you have a good attitude in spite of the injury, with wanting to find things you can do and go at it all out. I wish you a speedy recovery.

@hanlonsk here's to 3.5 miles!! Slowly but surely you're getting back into it!

I'm getting confused with my ITB. My short runs seem to produce the most pain, while my long runs go fairly well. How the heck can that be? It must be in my head.

I lived thru very slow mountain climbers Sunday, and made it clear thru all the jumpy things without cause to stop for the first time in two weeks today.

I got cleared to play with increased mileage. With probably not specific enough sideboards for a runners brain. But if I try a new mileage and pain lasts longer than 24 hours, I have to back track. If I try a new mileage and get it twice with no issues, I can increase again.
But, no “NTE” numbers, and no “jump by this much at a time” limits...and I even suggested he may want to be more specific ... eh, we shall see. But I’m at a hotel with no weights the rest the week.... this will either be awesome, or will end badly.

Hay Lenny thanks for the well wishes I do like this Ask Dr. Jo on U-tube, shes always been my go to when i have an pain/injury and if she cant help me fix it i then will see my ART(Active Release Technique $$ Dr. Shes funny as all heck and shes just a pleasure to work with thats Ask Dr Jo.

Hi Hanlonsk im pleased that you cleared to increase mileage, be safe out there and stay in tune with your pain. As you know im a huge u tube fan for excercise ideas and there loads of body weight videos if your board in your hotel room, check them out.

Elisie im hoping you got some of your PT checked off your list, i do believe pushing the shopping cart has to account for something. :)

I just got home from my one day follow up after my pingueculae removal in my eye. I look a wreak lol...crutches and nasy red eye. Im pleased with the go ahead with my non weight bearing excersies oked now my the eye doc. Because its in the conjuctive(white of the eye) it bears no effect on bending over etc. We booked the other eye to be done in June and im hoping to get in on a cancellation....It will be riding season but either way i can always wear goggles.

Positivty is the potion to some of the finest medicines known to men/women. On that note im wishing you all a "Posi-shine" day! Full of positive sunshine!! Cheers to all!

I received my Believe training journal today! Yay!

I went to set it up, and realized the first day will be on my 3 month follow up visit. With any luck, I'll be cleared to start a return to running program.

Nice when one chapter physical closes and another physically opens.

Happy Easter wounded runners/friends.!!! After dealing with an ill fitted walking boot my recovery is now under way. The unwarranted pain it was causing my calf thigh and buttocks was excruciating to say the least. Once i figured out the shaft running up the outter side of my leg was digging into my femur causing all the grief, im now starting to have less pain, trama and drama. Specialists my Ar$....300$ for a fitment specialist. Im just so thankful we figured it out.

Wishing you all a Happy Easter!!

I am 12 days from the 12 week follow-up. I decided yesterday, that even though I'm not cleared to run, (I can walk 15 minutes for exercise), I was gonna run today.

I came to my senses and waiting 12 days won't kill me. I may get back on the bike trainer today. I haven't done anything since I changed my macros, and I'm curious how my energy will be.

I still have pain. So I should just stay on track. I trust my doc. So I'll listen.

@mrswhitehog How are you coming along?

Today i am 12 days from my 7 week follow up wich means it will be my first x-ray since i fractured my 5th metatarsal. Im so glad Elise made her post of waiting to run until she is cleared, because i have promised myself the same thing to wait for Dr. orders on the 26th!! Do i want to stay in this boot any longer then i have to "heck" no!

So here is my RANT.... when i joined a class act gym one of the largest chains in Canada my husband also purchased me 6 one hour sessions with a personal trainer. So i review the trainers and pic this young thing with a very muscluar physic.

We do our first session and she promises me to send me a list of the machines we used weights/ reps etc. so i can do the work out on my own Friday. I texted her that same Wed to remind her im lost without machines/weights/reps in some written formate so she texts me that she will send it asap ....today is Saturday and i still have got nothing form her. Friday i was to work out on my own ...but instead spent the day ranting about this unprofessional treatment by my personal trainer. My plan now is to give her exactly 24 hours notice ( as requested in my contract) and cancel Mondays session and repeat the process of canceiling on Wed. In the mean time i am reaching out to find a MATURE personal trainer.

Am i wasiting time and negative energy by cancelling her scheduled session? What im trying to do is teach the girl a lesson. Lord nows she taught me one.

In the mean time i am reaching out to find a MATURE personal trainer.

Here i am an injured athlete trying to stay on track because its a tough process and this person has derailed me and i allowed it.

    Blah wah blah wah!

I see the doc Monday actually... 2 days of waiting. I'm not yet pain free, but it'd be nice to teaching everything to work together again.

*Ugh that woman sounds awful. Can you write your own plan in the mean time? I hope she learns from this. No one wants to employ her to do nothing.

@ Elise, how is recovery going? It looks like you got a run in today, how did that feel?

I am 7 days away from my first check, keeping my fingers crossed that i get into a rigid shoe. Anything is better then this ankle restricted boot. I have such shoe envy its not funny. As for my Personal Training at the gym the manager hooked me up with a new trainer and i get to restart the program. So tomorrow i will meet the new trainer, im still leary on doing to much i would rather wait and get the ok from Dr. saying im healed! In the mean time me and Caroline Jordan's hurt foot on YouTube video's.

    Cheers

@mrswhitehog the run went well overall. I was cleared to run one minute, walk a minute for 30 minutes. My 11th running minute I wanted to call it quits. So... I'm being intentional and resting today...

Maybe you could put off the trainer until your doc clears you? Or just focus on upper body until such time?

I seriously was ready to hire a personal trainer. I thought I really could use some accountability and I really need to do some weights. But, I forgot to ask about it. I'm sure it's be wise of me to wait until I'm pain free.

@Elise4270 That 11th minute i sure hope you will call it quits, and resting the day after is a good thing :) Im old, so i pay strict attention to the body yelping ouch at any given time lol or else it gets its revenge.

I am going to take your advice and not start with the trainer until after i see the doc and he clears me. I shopped yesterday to find a rigid walking shoe in hopes i get cleared next Thursday, just making sure they were stocked and my size was available. I only tried the good foot in the shoes, im playing safe and would like to be recovery in 7 weeks not 14.

Have a great day and thanks for your support!

@mrswhitehog My second run it was the 7th minute that got my attention. Haha! I think I may cut it back from 15 one minute runs to 7-10 until 15 is a little easier. I'm glad that it's not my cardiovascular endurance that's holding me back.

I can bike, and I may work more of that in.

Good to hear you found shoes! Fingers crossed for Thursday!

You have any race distance you are going to train for?
  • lousoulbody
    lousoulbody Posts: 663 Member
@Elise4270 when you say you can bike, do you go outside on a peddle bike or a stationary bike, or both.? I mentioned how i box on a stationary bike and let me tell you i get to sweat!! and get my heart up to almost 160, it feels so good!

To be honest im super scared to get back to running. Im going to work with my PT guy, he says ill be back in 4 weeks once im out of the boot. I will probably redo couch to 5K and not over do my foot. Fight the fear and get back to running. I havent even thought of a race or distance yet. I figure getting to run a full 5K without stopping will be my first endeavour. It will be interesting to see where my cardio is at. You inspire me when you metioned your cardio endurance is not holding you back. I think you have been out much longer then i have. So much fear of reinjuring, im sure ill get over it once i start running.

Your support means the world to me...there is nothing like talking to another injured runner. Our injuries may not be the same, but we both get it.

@mrswhitehog I agree there's something about having someone who gets it.

I've been chronically injured for years. I had 4.5+ undiagnosed with the DGS (like piriformis syndrome) that was so severe I suffered nerve damage. Then 18 months of conservative treatment- finally surgery, that took 9 months to feel normal again. And now the ITBS issues that overlapped with the DGS (other hip) and that was an additional 9 months of pain. I'm still in pain, but I know any day it'll be gone.

short summary, I've battled chronic pain since March of 2012. It's been a *kitten*.

Worst of it has been that no one understands the physical pain, or the emotional wear it takes on a person.

So I am very happy to be there for you during your down time.

I can bike outside. I just havent had the chutzpah to do so. It's safe/easier in the house. I'm not ready for hard.

When I was cleared to start a bit of running. I had some trepidation. No way I can run again, what if I'm still hurt, what if I can't do it. I stewed for 2 days before I went out there ready to be beat and pout about how hard it is, how unfair life it...

But I did it. It was easier than I thought it'd be. It's hard, I have some pain, I'm sore from the exercise but I feel I'll be able to get out there more and more. I didn't have any high expectations. Doc said I could probably be ready for a half before spring. *Gah* no probably not. I'm not pushing it. I'm going to cross train, remember to do some core, hip, leg strengthening. And if the half happens, it happens.

While I was down I did the Stationary bike almost daily for 30 minutes. Then two weeks post op I was cleared to swim. I used a snorkel, hand paddles and flippers so I could get the most out of it. Idk if you have the opportunity for a bit of swimming? I can do a strictly upper body swim and let my hip rest if needed.

I think I read that you start losing cardiovascular endurance at 5 weeks. I was out 11.5 this go around. Just do as much as you can to keep it.

ETA Start back small so you don't get discouraged. I'm doing run 1 minute, walk 1 minute for up to 30 minutes. Next week I can do 2/2 minutes, 3/3 the weeks after. I'll probably take it slower and not progress until I'm comfortable. You might try something like this when you return.

After a 20 mile run last Sunday, and a 34 mile "run" eight days before that, both with ZERO ITB pain, I'm declaring myself cured. I hope you all get cured soon as well! I'll keep reading this thread though, and continue to cheer you on.

I have one more PT session scheduled and I think I'm going to keep it, and see if I can get her to give me a general, overall workout to do to keep me healthy.

@hanlonsk we haven't heard from you for a while. I hope you're making progress!

I think I’m making progress... I hope I am, anyways. I am traveling a lot going forward to a small town. It doesn’t have a gym. So, no lifting. So, I need to get my running game back on track, or give up food.

I’m still off track this month. But my week in dc had over 50 walking miles. Which, for a not really a runner person was harder on me than expected. Muscles in general, the darn ankle, and one heck of a white girl sunburn. So, I didn’t run last week either. But, I have miles on the board this week finally.

Well it was a good day with the Doc and my 7 week follow up. My cast is off & in im in a regular running shoe, with no running for at least 4 weeks. My ankle is super weak and Doc says i will be healing for another 4-6weeks so i have to play nice.

I did 2 walks yesterday, on the second walk i brought a cane because im so slow and look ridiculous & i brought my phone in case i need a ride home. With both walks i managed almost 2 miles, and was done.

Today i will start the day with a walk, a good rest and repeat maybe 2 more walks. I will see my PT guy monday in the mean time i will do AskDoctorJo ankle excercises, she is always my go to for injury repair, shes on youtube and she knows her stuff and shes free!!

I hope everyone has a glorious day, enjoy and dont forget to smile....it gives your face something to do.

Well since the boots been off i have managed a 1 mile walk, twice daily. Today im not feeling the love my foot so deserves so im thinkin of toning things down a notch and to some PsychoBoxing, thats my rendition of boxing with 1lb weight gloves while riding a stationary bike, a may look like psychotic but its so worth it.

@mrswhitehog Take care of that foot. I'm still icing my hip after 3 months. Just a little I'm and patience.

    Have fun bike boxing!

@Elise4270 I think you had asked and I have been pretty busy, so wasn't sure whether I had answered yet or not... rather than go back and see whether you asked or not and whether I answered or not, I'll just copy and paste this from another thread in a group where someone else had asked a similar question - if this is extra information, then I figure no harm:

I use an Omron HBF-516. Most bio-electrical impedance devices are way off (way too low), but this scale is right at 0.3% higher than Dexa every time. I can't / won't get rid of this scale.

    Y'all. I. Am. Grumpy.

Too much too soon and my hip's being a baby about no rest and forgetting to stretch, so I gave it some advil and told it to shut up.

We are 2 men short at work today. My coworker is in a tizzy over how much there is to do. *Sigh* I'm not in the mood to babysit him. I can do all y'all's jobs combined in 8 hours, shut the eff up. Did I mention that I'm grumpy?

Resting today. Think I'll try for some swimming and biking this week to give the hip a break.

Hope everyone else is staying injury (and co-worker) free!

It's official. I had my last PT session today and my PT says I've made great progress and if I keep doing what I'm doing I should have many successful ultras in my future! In her words, I've graduated.

It's kind of bittersweet. I'm certainly glad what I've done has taken care of my IT band issues but I'll miss the session. She was excellent at explaining what I need to do and why, and she was also pretty motivating.
