Bob is a class-A jerk. What an awful thing to say after you’ve been so kind to him. Is it possible that old Bob has lost his “social filters”? Sometimes old folks (look who is talking!) lose the ability to censor themselves. Old guys especially think they’re being funny when they’re insensitive. My late father in law began saying awful things he thought were very humorous when he started exhibiting signs of Alzheimer’s.
Anyway don’t let this dumb remark derail you. You’re tougher than that!2 -
Yep, Bob sounds like a jerk. Being 84 doesn't automatically excuse you from being a jerk (not all old folks are sweet and lovely)...but Yooly is right that advanced age and crass remarks do seem to go hand in hand. My experience is that old age makes folks who were jerks in their middle age even jerkier, and can turn some previously adorable middle aged folks into newly minted jerks as they lose control over their civil/social inhibitions.
Don't let it needle you....you probably look simply gorgeous just the way you are....and a few surplus pounds can be re-lost but being a jerk is a much harder problem to solve.
Also...don't let it stop you being kind to Bob. Toxic comments can hurt, but losing your compassion and natural kindness can hurt your spirit in a different way.4 -
Sorry about Jerky Bob!…
I had a good day but way too busy!…dentist in the morning, John has an MRI scheduled and I have a cardiologist visit Wed….Thurs John sees spine doctor again….sheesh!2 -
Hope it all goes well, Connie.
Walking up my street tonight, Bob was on the front lawn with neighbours across the street from him. As I approached the husband called out "don't worry - he's grounded"
I said "did he tell you what he said?"
He and his wife said "no"
I said "ask him - and tell him that it was a really dumb comment to make to a woman" ... they laughed...I imagine they will get it out of him and rag him for being a dumb ***kitten***3 -
Bob 😡
I hurt my left lower back exercising yesterday. I woke up several times from the pain and decided to call in sick to work because my full focus is on the pain at all times. Fortunately I'm on a diet break so I can eat whatever and not worry. Might have to order in, which I never do by myself and have only done three times when I had people over. I'm not even hungry or craving anything. It's 8.13am and I'm not even sleepy, even though I've been fully awake for an hour and I am not at all a morning person.3 -

I'm so sorry! Alternating ice and heat will help it feel better. I have some scoliosis in my lumbar spine so I'm familiar with just how much muscle aches can cripple you.

Thanks! That's really useful advice. I ended up napping on and off for 3 hours and the pain is somewhat less intense but mostly I've been really hot so I'm gonna start alternating with ice.
I used to have a lower back injury but it never hurt like this before. It was more nagging constant pain rather than the sharp spikes whenever I move I am experiencing today. But hopefully this will also go away much faster if I just rest for a few days.3 -
Oh, @bojaantje3822, hope it settles quickly.3
-
It is too hot to think. I have spent the day reading and napping and drinking vast quantities of iced tea. That's also what I have scheduled for tomorrow. Cause too hot.5
-
Hope you have air conditioning Alexandra! Looks like a brutal summer ahead.3
-
We do, but not central air. It is trying to keep up but it's only getting partway there. It's hard.3
-
I remember growing up in Cleveland when no one had AC! Luckily the hot weather is temporary in the Midwest. Hope things cool off soon.3

Hey all.
I am alive. Dealing with my loud neighbors sent me into a spiral the weekend of the 4th and I was really struggling with my anxiety and depression. Things got bad... real bad. My doctor had to double my daily medication and had to get me some new meds to help control my panic attacks. I was having a panic attack at least once a day it not 2 or 3 times a day. Even when there was no noise. I stopped eating for about 5 days. Still don't have my full appetite back either.
Going out of town this weekend on a much needed trip. Work and family really pulled together so this can happen and I am so thankful. I leave tomorrow and will be coming back late on Sunday. Heading up to Chicago for fun, food, and museums. And relaxation.5 -
Tooth blew up at three am, and it took one of my precious hoarded pain pills to get it to where I wasn't weeping in pain. I'm managing right now because in an hour and a half I can go to my dental appointment and get antibiotics, and some temporary pain relief.4
-
You are both having a difficult time. Hope it passes very quickly.4
-
Yikes. Hope health improves for all three of you. Ibuprofen seems to work even better than opioids for teeth for me.
And Bob. Can join my innocent looking dad. Who commented I should add a kilo or two instead of trying to lose even more weight (his interpretation of maintenance, not mine). And the next day when I added a second 400 Cal frozen dinner for myself after we each had one for dinner (I was operating with 1500 Cal remaining)... he said: "wow: a second one. As long as it doesn't make you head out for a walk! 😡😡😡🤬🖕3 -
Old guys! You just gotta ignore them or forgive them. Someone changed the rules in the old guy world and forgot to clue them in.3
-
Clueless old guys...the world's full of them. Plenty of clueless old gals too. We just have to hope we don't join their ranks one day.
I've burned a lot of calories today. Two long walks accounted for 16,000 steps, and we also went for a 50km (30 mile) bike ride. Stopped at a pub for lunch at the 35km point and had a diet Pepsi and a ham baguette...nicked a half dozen of Kim's chips. Man, I love being retired!4 -
Apparently I am going to lose all my teeth. I have a referral to a periodontalist to see if there are any that can be saved to anchor a partial denture. Also a referral to an oral surgeon to deal with a bad tooth that has its roots uncomfortably close to my sinus cavity.
Part of me says "Fine, eff it all, pull all of them, and to h---with it." This was not what I expected to come out of this visit.

Have been AWOL for weeks--extremely busy with life in general, but just caught up on the last several pages of conversation. Was nice to find out what everyone is up to, and welcome @bojaantje3822, if I ever moved from the US it would be to the Netherlands.
I will have some challenges in front of me for the next several weeks, and it will be a test of my ability to not stress-eat--I have just been diagnosed with endometrial cancer and will be having a total hysterectomy as soon as it can be arranged. Hoping that the activity limitations and hormonal changes don't derail me too far. Seeing the specialist June 27th, and treatment plan will be figured out at that time. What a sucky birthday present--I will be 55 tomorrow.6 -
Oh my goodness! I wish Alexandra and Jennifer all the best. Those are some difficult challenges.1

I hate reading everyone’s bad health problems today when I am having such a great one!…..yesterday at the dentist I had no cavities and only one tooth to watch for sensitivity!….I plan on keeping these teeth the rest of my life!….
Saw the cardiologist today and my ECHOgram and stress test were ok!…I have a thicker left heart valve because of high blood pressure for so many years and it showed up as a blockage!…I was cleared for all exercise and was told to find one activity out of my comfort zone!…said I look great ( except for weight ) for almost 71 years old!
I feel really good and am getting some energy back again….depression is always hovering in the background but I am fighting it…
I hope everyone has a better day tomorrow!3 -
We're just getting all sorts of things we don't want, aren't we, Connie? (hugs)3
-
Alexandra, is there a dental college in your town? Often they take patients for senior students to work with at a greatly reduced cost. They are supervised by their professors and get graded so there’s big incentive to do good work. And they might offer some new innovative treatments.
Several of my family members have had great experiences. Can’t hurt to get a second opinion if possible.2 -
Alexandra - what unpleasant news. I really dislike going to the dentist... It sounds like a nightmare.
Jennifer - I really don't know what to say. That sounds so very terrifying. Be gentle with yourself. And try to give yourself some special treatment on your birthday tomorrow...keep us updated.
Connie it was such a pleasure to read your good news post. Ideally it's best to be a healthy hot mama!3 -
@jenniferelizabethwiseman and @AlexandraFindsHerself1971 wow. I know that both of you will overcome. But I've heard of better news, right?!?!?!
My update is basic. Garage was almost empty to use for staging. Rain started. Driven. Against the door. obviously bottom seals are not water tight. Garage has lots of water. Not suitable for staging. Either bet on no more rain over the next two weeks or try to fix the seals. I was fixing seals today! While doing enough for work like things to not end up in deep poo poo!3 -
@jenniferelizabethwiseman and @AlexandraFindsHerself1971 I'm so sorry for what you're both going through. Sending healing vibes in your direction!2
-
Lots of healing vibes!!!1

Selling / staging is where my son/daughter in law are at. There house is so pristine at the moment...and they are still doing little things in the spare time. Yuck. Good luck with the repairs and the balancing act, PAV.3

Thanks, all. Nice to hear your good news, @conniewilkins56 ! @AlexandraFindsHerself1971 I hope you get some relief for your tooth problems--sounds really miserable. I have gotten tons of support and am in a better frame of mind to handle things. Thank goodness I HAVE been so successful with weight loss over the past 18 months--it is going to make the surgery and recovery so much easier!6
