Have any of you used soy curls? And if so, how did you prepare and which ones did you buy?0

Happy Monday, Plant People. I'm feeling much more on track. I've been watching videos on YouTube by Andrew Kirby, and the one I watched yesterday has really stuck with me: Most people think a week, month or year ahead...we should think 25 years ahead, and as we make our choices ask ourselves if those choices will give us what we hope for 25 years hence. Perhaps this won't resonate with everyone, but somehow it did with me, and I've already done my 10k steps, 18 minutes of yoga/free weights, and made today's meals.
It seems like we're making great use of this enforced sheltering in place. Seeing how much clutter our family has released, how organized parts of our house are, I'm feeling almost as if this is a "sanctuary in place."
Today: Vega protein/almond milk/blueberries, lunch was cauliflower made in the airfryer and dusted with nutritional yeast (as close to fried food as I get), tonight is potato, salad, and roasted veggies.0 -
Happy Monday, plant friends!
Shred, I am so glad you are feeling more on track today! And I am super impressed at all you have gotten done to make your home such a sanctuary.
Magic - I have no experience with soy curls. They just have not called to me yet.
And hurray to your house being so clean!
I need to catch up on the house cleaning thing. Did a little today, and will do more.
My food is on track today, but I have not gotten in any movement. Tonight's dinner, unsuprisingly, will be a large salad with homemade dressing. And I will go walking
I did stop and look up my old numbers. This time a year ago, I weighed a little less than I do now, after losing around 130 pounds. After dropping down to 120, I have very slowly crept back up a little, trying to add muscle, and I think I have! Calipers say my body fat percentage is in great shape. So yay to that. If anyone tells you that you can't add muscle on this diet, well, I think they are wrong! It has been a little freaky trying to dance with having the scale number go up but very slowly, and I am happy about that.
Okay, off to do project work!

Hey Shred, glad to hear things are going well and that you have been able to use some COVID time to make home nicer.
Magic, I think I saved a couple recipes with soy curls a year or two ago but still haven't got around to getting any to try. Sounds like your bedroom is going to be so nice and peaceful.
Austin, you're doing great as always!
Lots of work to do tonight so this is just a quick hello!

Wow, did I read that right...130 lbs? That's a person! Good for you!
I have only a toddler to lose, but I think any weight loss requires commitment. What I love about this way of eating is that the commitment is easier to sustain because the food is so nourishing.
That being said, I look back on this month as it draws to a close, and commit for next month to making my meals more interesting. And, perhaps adding a touch more fat. Last week, was the Week that I Could Not Stop Eating Peanut Butter, and looking back at my tracking statistics, I see that my fat grams were extremely low.
I'm allowing myself some low fat salad dressings this week, and that seems to help.
Good night, Plant Friends!0 -
Happy Tuesday, plant friends!
Mihani - the part of my life that are biting challenging are not the health and fitness parts, but there's definitely Stuff To Work On. Projects. On the plus side, I did well on one of my 2 projects today. Tomorrow I just need to keep that one rolling along and do some big work on the other one.
I hope your work tonight went well!
It's going to be a busy day tomorrow, as I have to take my son to the orthodontist. I am hoping we stay safe and healthy. We are the first appointment, and I am hoping that helps (all night foe aerosols to fall to the floor; crossing fingers). And then it's time for grocery shopping -- more cooties! Sorry if I sound wacky/grumpy. It has been a looong day.
On the plus side, I ate well and got in a good long walk!
Howdy, Shred! Howdy, Magic!1 -
Hi Shred! Yes, 130 is the number. So, yes, I halved my body weight. Phew!
I think the effort may be the same. It's just a matter of time.
And a big yes to this way of eating making it easier.
And since I think you are another science geek, I'll share a link to a lecture/podcast that my husband has gotten me started on. Mike Mew is an evolutionary dentist, and he makes some very interesting connections between a diet that requires lots of chewing and human health.

Austin: What motivated you to start and what kept you going?
I find the longer I eat this way, the easier it is to eat this way (reminds of the process when I quit smoking, it just became less about not smoking than not having to go through the early stages of withdrawing from smoking.)
What I find is that once I stop seeing that drop on the scale as swiftly, I begin to backslide. So, I'm thinking that I need to find a supporting motivator...I'll have to think about this.
My favorite meal now is russet potatoes rolled in nutritional yeast and a touch of olive oil, and cauliflower prepared the same way, with some pasta sauce. And, I've also discovered that watermelon is the best.
My processed food eating seems to settling on brown rice cakes and skinny pop...
Have a great evening, all!0 -
Oh, and thank you for the link. Interesting...!0

Watermelon for the win! I could eat it every day, and honestly do during the summer.
Work to do yet it's another quick hi y'all.
1 -
Quick hello as well...
Coffee
Oatmeal
Iceberg salad with Tomatoes and Onions...ketchup AND ULTIMATE burger by gardein...no bread
Watermelon MIHANI !
Stir fry veggies and 1/2 cup cooked jasmine rice
Pineapple
HAPPY DAY TO EVERYONE!1 -
Happy Thursday!
The temperature has dropped to a lovely 77 degrees...and it has been glorious.
Today:
Vega protein powder, almond milk, blueberries
potatoes
3 rice cakes, vegan turkey slices
cauliflower made in the air fryer with nutritional yeast watermelon
Not as 'pure" as what I had aspired to previously, but I found that I was craving fat and flavor so badly, that I was consistently falling into jars of peanut butter...only to eat my way out of them.
Excited to start a new month!
(Also, I'm the Tiny Habits e-mail distribution and I'm thinking about how I can link my habits...more of a manageable journey for me...)
And, finally, the "aha"...identity. I am no longer thinking of myself as a dieter. This is the way I eat.0 -
Shred, that's a BIG revelation when you realize this isn't just a diet it's just the way you eat. I remember when that realization hit me. Yay for you!!!
Enjoy that watermelon, Magic!
Hi, Austin.
It's another quick hi here. I have work to do yet tonight. Man this month has sucked!1 -
Oh, and a quick add... I remember someone asking me once if I ever missed eating meat and dairy. Granted that was many years ago for meat and going on 9 years of no dairy. But I said no, I honestly don't even think of that as "food" now. That was a revelation too. I am not even tempted because it's not "food" to me.1
-
I love that...it's not food to me. Perfectly stated, Mihani! I do not think of meat as food either. I think of it as they are, ie., chickens, cows, turkeys...sweet animals and fish that deserve to live just like us. I can't believe it took me all these years to come to that realization.
When you grow up in the age of supermarkets and are fed all this food, which comes packaged all nice and neat...one loses perspective that it used to be a living being.
Anyway, today's menu:
coffee
oatmeal, blueberries almond milk
veggie stirfry, cold with jasmine rice (made a big batch last night...hoping it's enough for two days at work)
peaches
home for watermelon and maybe a Popsicle
HAGDE!
PS I have a chair gym, which I used to use regularly. Digging it out tonight and will start using it again tomorrow August 1st. 2 1/2 months till 72nd birthday. Want to be in a better place than I am now!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lZhMWjQry0

Yep, I remember watching Finding Nemo with our son for the 84th time, and the scene where the fish are caught in the net and gasping for air...that was the end of fish for me. Long before that I gave up beef, chicken, etc., but somehow fish didn't seem sensate to me.
I've started doing my work out routine to TED Talks, and listening to one which isn't "my kind" of talk...I miss my gym, but this is kind of neat.0 -
I love Finding Nemo, Shred! Fish are friends, NOT food. LOL
Magic, I had a bit of discussion with someone once where she was going off about how awful hunters are, and I said I don't know. At least they own it. They kill, dress, eat. They don't buy it cooked and thrown into a bag at McDonald's or buy it all nicely cleaned and ground up and wrapped in the supermarket. Not that I'm a fan of hunting by any means, but if everyone had to raise their own cows and send them off for slaughter, or shoot their own deer, or catch and clean their own fish, there'd be a lot more vegetarians in the world!
It has been a super busy week. I hired a friend to come over tomorrow and help me clean the house. It got away from me while my back was out of whack and I need help. Then I can work all day Sunday because we are SO busy and everything is behind. Picked up another watermelon on my way home!y'all

So here's a question...y'all know I am decluttering...and then I was going to have Molly Maids come and clean. But maybe I shouldn't...because of Covid...
Your opinions would be appreciated.
I think I am going to cancel...but would like to hear what you guys think.
TIA!

Hey there! For what it's worth, I think was a great call. I can so get the luxury of someone else doing the cleaning, but right now, there's a definite risk factor there.
And wow, I am so far behind! Will catch up on your posts now!0 -
Happy Monday again, peeps!
And yes, I could be all for watermelon every day! It's harder at my house, as the teenager inhales it. He ate all of our last watermelon in a day, minus 3 measuring cups worth that I had!ShredWeek1 wrote: »Austin: What motivated you to start and what kept you going?I find the longer I eat this way, the easier it is to eat this way (reminds of the process when I quit smoking, it just became less about not smoking than not having to go through the early stages of withdrawing from smoking.)

Shred - I got motivated by looking really, really hard at where my health was headed. I had a number of nagging health issues, nothing major, but I looked around at older friends and relatives and thought, "If I don't work on this, I'll end up old and tired and fuzzy brained and maybe stuck on the couch/bed." And then, I kind of leaned into that, once I saw how motivating that could be, that fear of losing what I had right then in terms of health. My first baby step was deciding not to have anything sweet one morning -- no trip to the corner bodega for a cinnamon roll or a Reese's. Maybe later, but not yet. Once that was a victory, I kept picking additional small steps to take, to make things better. I also sat mu husband and son down, after a bit, and explained what I was up to, and that I needed their help. I was giving up all added sugar, and I needed them to not have ice cream and cookies in the house for the foreseeable future, to make resisting temptation easier. I kept up with baby steps. I also read (or walked by while listening to) a lot of nutrition articles and books (Dr Fuhrman, Dr Greger, nutritionfacts, etc), to help cement the importance of what I was up to in my head.
I hope that helps?0 -
Hi Austin... I like your story of the baby steps taken into this way of life. You've definitely made it sustainable and workable.1
