Well after all this time of avoiding it, I now have COVID. I took a home test on Friday and it was positive. Symptoms so far have been a head cold and the feeling of being tired. I took two naps yesterday and still slept 8.5 hours last night. On Saturday, I managed to run 3 miles and walk 2.5 miles. Yesterday I did absolutely nothing all day except for the previously mentioned napping. This morning I walked almost 4 miles when I got up. Not sure what my running will be this week. I’m just playing it by ear and focusing on kicking this thing.
Ouch @7lenny7! I can’t imagine the pain that caused you. I hope any additional surgery is quick and heals fast.
@katharmonic – You are a total beast!! How did I miss that you were doing TWO Spartan races this weekend? Congratulations!!!
Glad all is well with you and your short-cut adventure @eleanorhawkins.
So exciting @marisap2010 that your town may be the new home for the RNR Marathon! And you get to be in the video! I hope it all works out for Macon.

Hugs to everyone with injuries and illness 🖤🖤🖤 Sending speedy recoveries to all4

I'm back to mfp after a long break due to very ill health.
Back up to 30 minute runs now and feeling not too bad.
Just signed up to my first half in two years In September.
I'll be doing 4 runs each week, currently doing 3
Hoping for another 29 miles this month. My mile times are very slow at the moment but hoping the speed comes back after ramping up the time.

First run in three months! It was, as expected, slow and crappy. 2.5km done. Hoping to get back on the train this time.13

Good news. I won't need surgery to reconstruct my finger. Surgeon says we're just going to let ride. Sutures come out in a week and I can start running as soon as it no longer hurts to do so.
Yesterday after I posted I went on a 5 mile walk. It felt fine as long as kept my arm bent 90 degrees. I did try to run for a little bit but the impact of the strides hurt too much. I'll try again this weekend. Until then I'll be walking as much as I can.11 -

13.06. 5.00km in 8:04/km incl. 5 minute fast run
25.87/60km, 0.1km behind target. Damn, should have run 100m more
Yay, running is going well again all of a sudden. Today was really easy and almost simple, despite being somewhat faster again than previously. Today's run included a 10min faster segment, but I only managed 5 minutes. That's fine though. Maybe I'll manage 8 minutes next time7 -

82°F Humidity, 76°F dewpoint
Right ankle improving, still tender and sometimes smarts a bit. I was able to pull up on my toes/ball a little bit on the hills today, so taking it for a win.
Reading through posts, you all are absolutely amazing! I love reading about everyone. Injuries/illness do suck some life out, but like running, one foot in front of the other and keep on!
*dew claws up*9 -
@7lenny7 AWESOME news no surgery so hopefully you will get function back and be able to run in a week or so.
@AlphaHowls you always amaze me running SO far every day so long and with injuries and DP of 76 is almost dangerous! We had about 73 deg dewpoint this am and now the sahara dust is coming in so air quality is mediocre as well.
Today's question?
How do you treat a vertical split on a toenail?
Even tho I don't wear tight shoes and I take biotin I have had 2 of there on my middle toes this week. My go to is the 2 part acrylic artificial nail kit which I paint over the whole nail and try to see if I can keep the crack from continuing down the nail. Just so annoying.6 -
The jump in my heart rate the moment I smashed my finger6
-
@7lenny7 So glad you don't have to have surgery!
@AlphaHowls That is about what the temps were for me early this morning too. I was completely drenched at 5:30am due to the humidity. But, I'd rather run at that temp than the 98F it reached here this afternoon.
Why did I decide to marathon train over the summer again?!?!7 -
@7lenny7 great news no surgery required!
@marisap2010 right? Summer marathon training is craziness 🥵 I feel your pain. Mine is in December, so really I won't have to do the bulk of specific marathon training in the dead of summer. But need to be building a large base to have a chance. Best of luck to you!
Did 6 miles on the treadmill this evening.

Nice running @martaindale ! I know being back in Houston and the heat was hard.
Having fun is the main thing @yirara . You're doing great.
Oh my @eleanorhawkins ! I'm so glad you weren't seriously hurt and eventually made your way to the top and a great view, and sounds like a great day overall. You're amazing.
Nice running @kgirlhart . Good job on taking breaks and staying in the shade. Love your pictures of Sunny (Lily) and the jack rabbit.
Ouch @7lenny7 ! For some reason the fingers just pound and throb so much when they are hit/hurt. That looks awful. I hope the surgery goes well and it won't be long before you can get back to running! Good news that you aren't going to need surgery and that walking doesn't make it hurt. You'll be back to your old self in no time. (It's amazing what our heart rate monitors can tell us. I know that had to hurt!)
@katharmonic The B&B is in Indialantic, FL....east coast. Congratulations on your two Spartan races in a row! You did great!
@marisap2010 Nice job on your runs. I did the talk test that Matt Fitzgerald has in his book to determine my Zones. But, like I said, that was a while back, so they are probably different now. I hope Macon can get the RNR marathon and it's fantastic that you get to be in the promotional video!
@Teresa502 So sorry to hear that you have CoVID. I hope you continue to have minor symptoms and get better quickly. Take it easy and if napping is all you can do for the day, nap away.
Welcome @Runaroundafieldx2 . Glad you are feeling better after a long illness.
You have to start somewhere @noblsheep ! Glad you are back! A lot of my runs are scrappy and I haven't had a long break.
@AlphaHowls You are amazing to run in those temps with a bumm ankle!

31.35/80 miles for the month
I didn't post yesterday as my non-existent...barely existing...internet was really acting up. I didn't feel like dealing with it. But, I did do my rest day mile walk on the driveway.
Today, after taking mom to the doctor, doing some shopping, and taking a nap, I went down and did my scheduled Long Interval run on the treadmill. I ran 5 min @4.3 mph, 5 min @4.5 mph, 3x(3 min @5.5 mph/2 min walk at 3.8 mph), 5:05 min @4.3 mph. That turned out about right. My average HR was 136 bpm and max was 155 bpm. I might could have run my fast intervals a little faster, but I was tired enough that I felt it was good for Zone 4.7 -
@marisap2010 summer marathon training is a big reason I don't want to do one again. It is rough week after week to add miles in that heat. It makes you tougher my coach always said, and then when the fall weather comes it will feel so much easier because you put in the work under those conditions. Hopefully
@7lenny7 good news about the surgery but kind of freaks me out a little to think of just leaving that smashed fingertip. Interesting.
Sorry about getting covid @teresa502. I have avoided it thus far too and sometimes forget now that it's still out there. Take it easy.
Welcome back to @Runaroundafieldx2 and @noblsheep!
@AlphaHowls always impressive. Hope your ankle continues to improve.
Thank you @kgirlhart, @eleanorhawkins, @Scott6255, @marisap2010, @Teresa502 and @quilteryoyo. I'm pretty sore from all those shenanigans and my back is complaining a bit about having carried heavy things. I skipped my strength training class because I couldn't think of anything that wasn't sore that I'd want to focus on - usually we'd skip legs or skip arms but there are no options left! I also wasn't up for running so I took Stella for a walk to try to loosen up a bit. The weather was gorgeous today so it was nice to get out although both Stella and I were tired (she from being at the boarding place all weekend).
Spartan race pics were posted so here's a little photo montage. The large photo of me on the ground is from the barbed wire crawl on day 2 - I decided to try the technique of rolling under instead of crawling. Big mistake. It was fast but I got super dizzy and felt like crap after that. Memo to self - too old to roll. Oh, I should add the last pic in the bottom right is from the start line. I'm on the very far left - the woman in the center and the surrounding people are from a team called Oscar Mike who are disabled veterans and supporters who race at every spartan race. This woman had a prosthetic leg - one of the racing blade type. There were others with arm crutches. And they introduced this 95 year old WWII veteran who members of the team had carried through the entire course the day before (he's in a wheel chair) and this was like his 5th spartan race doing this. He was amazing, as was this whole team.13 -
Awesome pictures @katharmonic!
@Teresa502 I hope your symptoms stay mild and you feel better soon.
@7lenny7 Glad you won't have to have surgery.
Welcome back @Runaroundafieldx2 and @noblsheep.
@marisap2010 I hope Macon gets the race. How cool that you got to be in the video.

Thank you everyone who commented about my smashed finger. The body is one incredible machine when it comes to healing and in just 5 days I've gone from thinking I seriously messed up my finger and will have to live with mild deformity going forward to thinking this wasn't such a big deal after all. (Then I look at the photos I took as I was waiting in the emergency room and think "Holy crap, I really did mess this up!). Well yes, it was a big deal (the pad of my finger was barely attached) but in the end the ramifications aren't as dire as I initially thought and lessons were learned. It will be interesting to see how this looks in a year. I had the impression from the ER doc that the bone fragments were too widely dispersed and had to be removed but the surgeon said the body will find them, encapsulate them, and fuse them together. Amazing. That saves me at least a week of recovery time not having to have it cut open again.
For the first few days I couldn't even use any of the fingers on that hand without causing severe pain. Today I'm actually typing with my smashed finger, with just a small bandage on it. Amazing. If I knock it in to something I do yell a few choice cuss words, but I feel like I'm well on my way to recovery. Tonight I'm going out (in 95F temps!) to do some walking hill repeats but I'll try running again to see if I can. This weekend I'm planning on 4 hours on the trails, running on wide, smooth trails when (and if) I can, but power hiking on anything where I have a risk of tripping. Even two days I ago I thought there'd be no way that could happen. The doc told me that pain is my guide. When I can stand the pain, I can run. I also need to avoid falling and banging the *kitten* out of my finger.
3 miles walking last night
2 miles walking so far today
@katharmonic and @eleanorhawkins you two are badasses! @katharmonic I could not have done one Spartan race even with good fingers, let alone two in two days. And @eleanorhawkins ...brush off the dirt, shake it off, and keep going...love it! I see no issue with you continuing on your run. You had a goal, you evaluated your situation and you felt you could continue and you did. Couldn't you just squeeze the bite valve with your finger and the bladder under your arm like a bagpipe to get water out of it? That how I used to water Kody on our runs to squirt the water in his mouth.
@quilteryoyo I don't know why but butterfly weed is one my favorite flowers. The Airbnb stay sounds wonderful and you deserve it!
@Teresa502 I enjoyed your photos. So sorry you have COVID though.
@alphahowls congrats on 1500 days!
@shanaber good to hear about your shoulder and that you also don't need surgery
@marisap2010 I'll be running an ultra near you on April 1st next year. The Bootlegger 50M or 100M (haven't decided yet) in Jackson, GA, about 45 minutes NW of you. I hope you get the R&R marathon in Macon. Macon is so steeped in R&R history. I'm a big Allman Brothers fan, used to travel around the country to see them and I know the former road manager who live in Macon and runs The Big House. I might have to run that race if they get it and combine two of my loves in one trip.9
