Today's run just felt awful. Nothing in particular, just was really, really hard to make myself run.
I may try some other activities for a while and see if that helps. It's pointless to keep trying to force running when my body for whatever reason doesn't want it right now.
Pretty pictures though...This picture is me, trying to bloom in a difficult place:7 -
@7lenny7 you are crazy
@Teresa502 sorry about the power being out and all that comes with that. Glad you got another hike in.
@yirara yay for running mojo. Enjoy it.
And @polskagirl01 sorry for the opposite for you. I agree with your idea to do some other things for a while and not force yourself through running and feeling miserable. You'll get back to it, maybe very soon, maybe a little longer break.

Just a short run today. Tomorrow's weather looks more promising for the race, which is good I guess?6 -
Got caught up I think. Liked and hugged everyone 😃 Although not sure which to do for @7lenny7
Call me crazy, but I'm planning on waiting for the hottest part of the day and going out for a 4 mile run just to say I did it. It's currently 96F with a 107F heat index. In two hours it's supposed to be 99F with a similar heat index. That's when I'll go out. I will bring a partially frozen water bottle with me.
Thanks for the father's day wishes @kgirlhart ❣️
Had a good time with the kids in Austin this weekend. We went out to eat a lot, went to many bars to drink and listen to live music, went paddle boarding, and hiking. All great times, up until we got back from the hike. Walking back up to the truck we saw some *kitten* there a big rock into the passenger side window and stole my son's girlfriend's purse with her wallet and keys inside 🤬
That put a huge damper on the day.
But other than that it was a great trip. But no running.
Tonight did 7 miles on the treadmill.

5.8 miles tonight in a toasty 100F air temp. I don't know the official number but I saw heat indexes from 106F to 114F. I wouldn't call it pleasant but it didn't suck as bad as I thought it would. I was grateful for the ice water I had with me and the wind helped when it wasn't blocked by trees. On my Strava activity @rusgolden asked me what the temperature distance was between my hottest and coldest runs. For difference in air temp it's 137F (100F & -37F). For difference between heat index and wind chill it's 157F (106F & -51F).
Those 80F days should feel pretty good after this.
I got my Garmin "Toasty" badge for an activity in 100F or more temperature!
I went out for 4 miles initially but at the turn-around I was feeling pretty good so continued on instead for a 5.8 mile loop. I did walk up all the major hills but the last one, so I'm not completely crazy. I wore my new Saucony Kinvara 12s again and really, really like these so I'm going to order another pair while I can still fine them on clearance. I'm a sucker for a good deal, especially on running shoes.
99/160 miles for June
321/639 miles for the Great Virtual Race Across Tennessee, well on pace to beat the end of August deadline.
@ContraryMaryMary I'm glad to hear the running group is showing you that your fitness is still up there. That's got to feel good.
@polskagirl01 I think you're on the right track by taking a break from running if it's not making you happy. Hopefully by taking the pressure of yourself to make it enjoyable you'll soon come back to what it was you love about running.
@kgirlhart thank you!
@Teresa502 UGH to losing power, all the trees and all that food!!
@Scott6255 sounds like you had a fabulous time with the kids, except for the *kitten* incident. What a scumbag!!

Since I missed the 60 degree weather yesterday morning, I did my Foundation Run last night in 95 degrees. It really wasn’t that bad, and I actually had a better pace than when I did the same run last week in the morning.
I again intended to do a run this morning, but I am sitting here typing instead. I feel like I have zero energy. I need to really figure out a plan for getting up to run before work. My plan should be changing to a hybrid schedule soon, so I won’t be on the road as much, and I think that will help so I won’t have to get up quite as early and won’t feel rushed.
@7lenny7 Glad your finger is feeling better!
@teresa502 Sorry for your power outage. I know what a pain that can be.
@polskagirl01 I agree that you should do something different for a few days. I know I get into a running funk periodically as well.3 -
another scrappy run last night, 2.5km again. it was 33 degrees out and i was dripping by the end of 1km looked like i had just fished myself out of a pool by the end of it. great fun. i'm quite enjoying this running thing.
also took my nephew to his first pump track outing on his tiny little balance bike yesterday. i think he liked it but it was really hot, so we did a handful of rounds (basically zero cardio for me, but quite a bit for him), then spent the rest of the hour hanging out in the shade drinking orange juice and chomping on ice cubes.7 -

Unfortunately it's a known issue in Austin. It happened to me the first time we hiked at Mayberry park back in '92. You would think that since it is so common that the areas would be patrolled and monitored by cameras but they are not. Another common thing is for someone to go to the bank and get cash and then leave it in their car while they do a quick stop at the grocery next door. That is another setup. Sorry this happened while you were visiting my town. I ended up finding everything but the cash outside Barton Creek Mall a few weeks later but had already done all the IDs before that.
Mileage - 94.91 out of 100 to date. Actually had some energy on my run yesterday to push the pace. It;s still about 80 this morning so not sure how high the temp will get. Running in 100 is not my cup of tea even though in some cases the dew point is lower....

Rest day for me today so I did a strength workout before work. I've really skipped out on these lately and I could really tell a difference.
Great job @yirara! It’s so nice when a run feels easy. Smart for you not to push it and incur an injury.
@polskagirl – You’re that beautiful daisy blooming in spite of the hard, rocky soil. You hang in there girl!
@katharmonic – Good luck with your race tonight. I hope it’s as fun as past year’s even though it has a new sponsor.
@Scott6255 – So sorry about the smashed window and theft. That always scares me when we have to leave a car at a trailhead to hike the AT. There has been a surge in the theft of catalytic converters in these areas recently and I always hold my breath when we get back to the car.
Congrats on your Toasty badge @7lenny7! I think @marisap2010 and @noblsheep deserves one also!

Woefully behind. Life got majorly stressful last week so I am catching up. Lots of beautiful pictures from so many of you!! @quilteryoyo the rhodedendron!
@eleanorhawkins Your mountain adventure sounded stressful but fun, I guess. Those sorts of things are so stressful while you're in them but when they work out, it's easy to look back and see them as interesting experiences. Re: mental toughness. I have had some big falls when climbing that stuck with me for a while. Out of nowhere, I would just lock up and get so fearful of making the next move as this memory of the fall popped into my head. It does get better with time. For me, I have to take a deep breath and make myself do the move. If I avoid it, it just lasts longer. I hope your anxiety chills out. I agree you are a bada$$!!
@7lenny7 So sorry about your finger but happy to hear you won't need surgery and seem to be healing quickly! That looks so painful. You're a tough guy!
I also switched to a hydration vest for my longer runs this past year, and love it! I still use a handheld for shorter runs but have definitely found the vest more convenient. I do the half frozen method. I tried ice cubes but even with the air all squeezed out, the cubes rattled and I found that distracting.
@katharmonic Great work on the spartan races! Sounds miserable but I'm glad you enjoyed them.@marisap2010 right? Summer marathon training is craziness 🥵 I feel your pain. Mine is in December, so really I won't have to do the bulk of specific marathon training in the dead of summer. But need to be building a large base to have a chance. Best of luck to you!
I am also in this boat of base building over the summer for an early January marathon/Dopey. I am struggling. It's so hot all the time and work is largely dictating my run schedule right now. I am being forced to run after work a lot, which means waiting until 7-7:30 when the sun gets lower and the heat index is only in the low 100's. It's ridiculous. I really don't want to go back to a gym but I may have to. It's taking a toll.
@Teresa502 So sorry to hear you had COVID. My family has also avoided it so far and I fear it is inevitable. I'm glad your symptoms stayed mild and you are feeling better.
Welcome back @noblsheep!!4 -

Updating with several runs. I missed 1 run last week and may miss 1 this week too. This plan combined with the crazy heat and life/work stresses is a lot. I need to decide if I should just cut back to 5 days a week or if I should keep trying this for a bit and see if things fall into place. Am I being too hasty in abandoning the plan or am I sticking with something too long that isn't working? IDK! This is only the 4th week and I was on vacation the first couple of weeks. It's always easier when you remove all work responsibilities from the mix. My personality is kind of rigid with plans so having skipped runs bothers me. Probably (definitely) more than it should. I also need to really consider getting a gym membership for the summer. It would give me an alternative to the late evening runs but I also don't really want to go to the gym. Having run only outside for over 2 years and still not being totally comfortable in crowded areas, the gym seems like a terrible idea. But, there's A/C and I could run right after work instead of basically right before bedtime. Decisions, decisions.3 -

Sorry things have been crazy and have interfered with your running schedule. My first instinct was to tell you to keep the schedule so that you will be well trained for Dopey and if you have to miss an occasional run then so be it. However, given that it causes you stress to miss a planned run (I'm the same way), then I say drop it back to 5 days a week. You are still 6 months out from Dopey and it will not do you any good to get to January tired and burnt out. You could ramp it back up in mid to late September and be just fine.

Yeah, this is what I am telling myself. I wanted to make the adjustment to running more frequently before I also threw in the increasing mileage of marathon training. 1 change at a time, you know? But 6 days a week may just not fit my life. IDK. I may need to change up my marathon plan too.
I just broke down and bought a treadmill. We don't really have a room for it but we do have a small den type room that really doesn't get much use. I talked to my husband about it to see how he felt about pulling some furniture out of that room to make space and he was cool with it. He agreed that no one uses that room enough for it to be considered a necessity. So, treadmill is coming. Should be here in 1-2 weeks. Gonna see what I can muster until then and at least I will have an option for those after work runs!9 -

I just signed up for the Afton 50K trail race on July 2nd in Afton State Park, MN. In addition to running I'll be volunteering. Much of this course is without cellular coverage so the RD uses amateur radio operators at all of the aid stations to track the runner progress an provide race communications. As a licensed amateur radio operator myself, I'll be carrying my handheld radio with me while I run and be an extra set of eyes on the course, and be available to provide assistance to anyone near me until help arrives.
Since this 50K will occur just a week after this Saturday's half marathon, I definitely won't be running hard for the HM.11 -
@7lenny7 Happy for you that you signed up to run AND volunteer at the 50K trail race. Not racing the HM the week before is a good strategy.
You will not regret getting that treadmill @martaindale 😁
Did a short 4 mile treadmill run to try to start catching up.

I managed to run a 5k! I thought it was a 3.5 mile race because it always has been in the past, so was surprised that it was just a regular 5k. I missed that detail in signing up for it. Which was just as well because I was certainly ready to be done at 3.1 miles. It was a beautiful night but felt very hot. It was about 80 degrees though and before the race as I waited for the shuttle around 5:45 pm I thought it was cooling down a little. I expecte that the wind off the lake that makes us so cold all winter would help, but it decided not to show up at all tonight except for a little headwind on the way out. It was really hot coming back and facing into the sun and the air was dead.
The first mile I felt pretty good and hit a 10-minute mile, which is something I haven't done in I don't know how long. I faded after that and got progressively slower splits. It was an out and back on the parkway and there was a long water station with lots of tables down the middle that you hit at 1 mile on the way out and at the 2 mile mark on the way back. I skipped it at one mile but I was feeling the heat badly coming back and I walked through the whole water stop pouring water on my head and down my back as well as drinking a couple of cups. That cost quite a bit of time of course. I started running again and tried to regulate my breathing a little better and lengthen my strides. I purposefully did not look at my watch the whole race because I was afraid I was going to mentally struggle with either being disappointed in the pace or get caught up in trying to push it too hard. I knew where the mile splits were and I heard someone say .5 miles left so I had a good concept the whole time of where I was. I pushed that last .5 miles as best I could and gave a little more kick when I saw that finish line. I was so happy to cross it. I finally looked at my watch and was fairly pleased - my official time was 33:18. Which is not anywhere near my best 5k and is almost the same exact time I got when I ran this race as a 3.5 mile in 2019. Still, I am happy that despite the heat and the walking section I was able to finish this race and feel pretty good about it.

I ran 6.3 miles this morning. It was warm at 81°F, but it was still pleasant. I really like when it is getting light as I run. Today when I walked out of the house there was a skunk in my driveway. I think he was startled when he heard me come out because he had his tail raised, but I just backed away slowly and he lowered his tail and went off through my neighbor's yard.
I ran through the sprinklers at the courthouse and took some carrots to Lilly. I saw a deer at the creek near the park. And I saw a couple of loose dogs at the park. I think they were the same dogs that I saw on Sunday. I saw them from a distance and was able to avoid them.
Congratulations on your race @katharmonic!

5.4 miles last night
104/160 miles for June - This is my highest June total ever, with 8 days still to go.
My strategy worked. After my 100F run Monday night the 86F run last night was almost pleasant. It was a dry 86F, so that certainly helped.
Can I talk about shoes again? Remember when I said I'm a sucker for a good deal, particularly on running shoes?
First I bought these Saucony Kinvara 12s for $60 (normally $110) at Sierra
I really, really like them so when I found them again for a final price of $55, after credit card bonus, at Saucony I decided to buy a second pair:
Well wouldn't you know it, Saucony had a better deal out last night for $45 per pair...and I was weak...so I bought 2 more pair:
I did end up getting rid of Two other pair of other shoes. I had an old pair of Kinvara 7s that a friend of mine gave me a few years ago because they didn't fit him. They were size 13, same as all the Kinvara 12s I bought (which fit great) but these 7s were WAY too tight. I'll drop them off in the donate box of the running store. Had I tried these before ordering that first pair of 12s, I never would have ordered the 12s. The other pair of shoes, Nike Pegasus 36s, had 311 miles on them and had worn through the outsole on one shoe. They still feel fine so I'll wear them for walking around, but I'm not chancing any pains from a worn out shoe.
So now I'm up to 20 pair of shoes, 8 in rotation, 12 in reserve. This is why I feel I have to run so much...to justify all of these.10 -
In total contrast you all your super hot runs, this morning I headed out after school drop off in a beautifully sunny but very nippy 5 degrees C. Frost everywhere (all the kids at school were so excited) and I couldn’t feel my toes until 7km in (I ran just under 8). Really needed gloves but fortunately had really long sleeves so could comfortably keep my fingers tucked away from the air - they were still numb though. I’ll do it again tomorrow but a bit more prepared.
Lovely run though. So pretty in the country and I felt pretty good too.8 -
Great job on your race, @katharmonic!
Those temps sound great to me, @ContraryMaryMary.
My office building's air conditioning went out yesterday, so my director and I decided to send everyone home to work remotely for the rest of yesterday and today while it is being repaired. Since I got home early, I was able to go to the gym to run and do my Pump class, which I would have missed otherwise. Run was a "Fast Finish" with 5 min Z1, 30 min Z2, 12 min Z3. Ended up with 3.63 miles.
I had a little pain in my neck yesterday, which I thought may have been from sleeping awkwardly, but when I woke up this morning, it is moving down my neck and into my shoulder blade. I'm sure my workout last night did not help it. I can't tell if it is muscle soreness or a pinched nerve. I had some muscle relaxers left from a prior car accident, so since I am working from home and won't have to drive today, I took one of those this morning. I'm going to skip my Foundation Run today, but I did walk the dogs for 20 minutes this morning. I'm going to call cross-training and be done with it for the day, in hopes that it will feel better tomorrow.6 -
I was supposed to meet a friend in the city to run at 5:00 am this morning. I was already on my way when I saw that she had sent a text canceling because of a back issue so I decided to keep going and just run by myself. I parked at the office and ran around a couple of our parking lots and on the walking path for a couple of miles until it started getting daylight and then headed out into town. I decided to change up my route at the last minute after passing a couple of homeless people and then seeing three more on the sidewalk up ahead. It all worked out and I got 5 miles in bringing my total to 45.74/75 for the month.
@katharmonic – Evening races are so hard for me and how rude of the lake wind not to show up for the race! Great job getting it done!
Nice looking shoes @7lenny7! How could anyone pass up such good deals?!?
4 -
@katharmonic Great job on your race!
@7lenny7 I wouldn't be able to pass up such a good deal on running shoes either. That's an amazing price!
@ContraryMaryMary Ooooooo, those temps sound AMAZING!! I can't wait until winter.0 -

Today's run was uneventful, but nice. I didn't see any critters besides Lilly. I did forget to plug my phone in last night so I has to charge it before I ran and I got out a little late, but I still had time to run 5.6 miles.

Hi all, I'm home safely. Trip was horrible from before the start until the finish, everything that could go wrong (and more!) went wrong, including a covid scare for my Dad (who is a lot worse than I expected anyway) meaning he had to postpone the MRI he was meant to have on Monday and we couldn't go see my very elderly grandparents either. I've spent most of the week trying to appear serene while with company and crying when alone. Still, I did get to see him, which was the main priority.
The weather was pretty warm for the UK, and it only rained overnight on Saturday. In fact, I managed to get sunburned because I sat out in the garden working all day on Tuesday and I hadn't even thought to take sunscreen. I must be the only person in the world to live in Spain and get sunburned in England.
I managed to get in a couple of walks and a couple of very much-needed runs.
On Monday afternoon I took off for a nearby park and lake, then found a deserted trail that led over a motorway and into a forest so I explored that. No idea where I was going, I just ran wherever I saw an interesting looking path. I honestly think that run saved me from just turning into a wreck rocking in a corner with my thumb in my mouth. It was lovely to see squirrels and swans and trees and flowers and stuff that we don't have here. I even surprised 3 deer in the forest, they jumped into the trees as they heard me coming, then stopped and stared out at me from a few metres away. I tried to take photos but they were very well camouflaged. I can't load photos here because my phone (being Spanish) won't let me into the English forums, but they're on Strava if anyone wants to see southern UK forest pics.
Then after dinner on Tuesday I was getting stressed out again so, although there was only an hour or so of good light left, I put road shoes on and took off again. I had more or less mapped out a route in my head but my husband phoned me and I didn't pay much attention to where I was going, so ended up just randomly running around town for an hour or so.
The town where they live is relatively safe, low crime rate etc., so it could just be my perception and the fact that I was stressed out anyway but I did notice that I didn't feel as safe on the streets as I do in Spain. I was ok in the forest, even when I passed a guy on his own walking in the middle of nowhere, but alone on quiet streets, I noticed I was on edge the entire time.
All in all, I ran 17km, 10 on Monday and 7 on Tuesday. My plan called for 5 on Monday, 6.5 yesterday and 5 today, but I've only had 4 hours of sleep and I have piles of work to catch up on so I'm just going to wait until my long run on Saturday now.9 -
@eleanorhawkins so sorry the trip to your Dad's was stressful and didn't go as you expected. Thank God we have running to deal with times like that. Big hugs to you❣️2

Haven't commented for a couple of days again. Sometimes my days are just too busy.
@7lenny7 I will call you crazy for intentionally waiting for the hottest part of the day to run. Glad your finger is feeling better. I think that is one Garmin badge that I will not intentionally be getting. I saw "savage running" and thought "Yes. Yes it was." and then I realized it was the name of your town. LOL Glad you like your new shoes too. You are a beast. Good luck with your upcoming races. Love the new shoes! I can't imagine having 20 pair of running shoes.
You are doing great @yirara !
@polskagirl01 Hang in there. You are doing the right thing by trying something else for a while. I'm sure your running mojo will come back. Beautiful pictures.
@Scott6255 Glad you had a nice weekend with the kids. So sorry about the stolen purse though...and the smashed window. It's so much trouble to cancel everything and get life back to normal after that happens.
@marisap2010 You are a beast too, for running in those temperatures. You are doing great with the plan. I hope your neck feels better!
@noblsheep Yeah for the running and glad your nephew enjoyed the biking experience.
@martaindale It is hard to balance everything that we have to do. It's even harder when the temperatures dictate when you can run. Yeah for the treadmill purchase. I don't know what I would do without mine. What kind did you get?
@katharmonic You did great on the race. That would be a PR for me. The heat makes such a big difference.
Nice running @ContraryMaryMary ! Glad someone is having cool/cold temperatures.
@Teresa502 Sorry about your friends back keeping her from running. You are doing great.
@eleanorhawkins So sorry your trip was so rough. Glad you were able to see your Dad. Glad running was a stress reliever for you!3 -

NordicTrack EXP 7i. It's got enough bells and whistles and was recommended on the wirecutter reviews. For the first time in years, I am actually looking forward to running on a treadmill!
@eleanorhawkins So sorry to hear your trip didn't go as planned and your dad was in worse shape than you anticipated. It must be hard being so far from your family.
@7lenny7 I second @quilteryoyo in calling you crazy to purposefully wait to run in those temps!5
