Logging 2 runs. Last night, I waited until the sun started going down again. We had a tiny rainstorm so I actually got a little sprinkling rain for the first mile and the temps dropped a little following the storm so while still stupid hot and humid, it was a little cooler than the day before.
Less than 12 hours later, up and at it again. I was able to run before work today. Yay! Mornings here are upper 70's, 98% humidity on the average. Not exactly pleasant. But compared to upper 90's with 100F + heat indexes, it feels amazing. Weather is truly relative! Decided to run my neighborhood trail then was stuck trying to figure out how to add on 1 more mile. Misjudged a bit and ended up with an extra half mile. I do my worst math while running.
Also had another truly unpleasant run-in with an off-leash dog owner. This one was walking a young-ish german shepherd who was dragging 8-10 ft of leash behind him. I saw them twice on a loop. Neither time did she make a move to reach for his leash. The second time I told her to just grab the leash! She said she had him off leash for a reason. Sure, you and everyone else. Then she said she trains police dogs professionally to which I answered that police dogs still have to be on a leash in public. She mumbled something at me as she turned around to walk off but never did touch that leash. I wish there was a way to actually report the off-leash dogs. Our neighborhood is huge and on a run I can be miles from my house. The dogs I see don't usually live anywhere close to me so I don't know those people. So even though it's something that should incur a pretty steep fine, which might actually deter people from breaking the law, there's no way to report it. So every year, we have more and more "friendly" off-leash dogs and pain in the *kitten* owners in the neighborhood. Rant over. For now.5 -
@noblsheep I don't know what a pump track is, but that sounds like a fun time with your nephew.
@SummerSkier @Scott6255 I think trailhead break-ins are common everywhere now. I know there's been a significant increase around here (along with an increase in many other crimes) in the past couple of years. I now take my oldest car to the trailheads...a 1999 Toyota Camry with 200k miles on it...leave nothing of value in view and leave the glove box and console open so would-be thieves can see there's nothing of value there either. I know some will even leave their doors unlocked so the windows aren't busted out. It's sad that it's this way. @SummerSkier nice job on the mileage. Looks like you'll hit your goal soon.
@martaindale I'm currently experimenting with ways to chill the water in my vest. I normally freeze a partial bottle before hand but last weekend I was running from the boat and our freezer there doesn't get nearly as cold as our home freezer so it didn't freeze solid in the time I had. I do love using the bladder though and with my new Salomon vest with insulated sleeve perhaps it will be easier to use. When I filled it full of ice, it was a road run so I had my ear buds in and didn't hear the ice rattling. Training - I could not do 6 days/week of running. The recovery/rest days are just as important, if not more so, than the running days. The stress adds up...stress from running, stress from work, stress from heat...so make sure you allow for time to recover, both mentally and physically. Going from 6 to 5 training days per week is not abandoning the plan, it's recognizing all of the stressors in your life and adjusting accordingly. Congrats on the treadmill!
@katharmonic nice job in tough conditions!
@ContraryMaryMary I'm jealous of that weather!
@eleanorhawkins so sorry about your trip but glad you got to see your dad and had a chance to go running for your own sake.

I ran 6.25 miles this morning. It was warm at about 80°F, but nice since the sun wasn't fully up yet. @7lenny7 You are definitely crazy for running in 100+ temps. 🙂
I saw a great blue heron at the creek. I stopped to give Lilly some carrots. There was a loose dog next door. He looked at me, but he didn't bark or come over to me so I just ignored him.
@eleanorhawkins I'm sorry that your trip was so stressful. I am glad you were able to get some nice runs in.

I met a friend at 5 this morning and she and I ran 5 miles. It was 10 degrees warmer than yesterday morning. Today is our United Way Day of Caring at work. Anyone who wants to volunteer and has permission from their supervisor can sign up to do organized volunteer work at various agencies. I signed up to wash cars at the American Red Cross. It was a fun day and I got to meet new people from all over the organization.
@eleanorhawkins sorry for the stressful visit and your dad not doing well.6 -

Thanks for your insight. I have been running for 4-5 years now (I don't actually remember when I started) and still very much feel like I am trying to figure out what works for me and what doesn't. When I went from 3 to 4 days then 4 to 5 days a week of running I noticed actual gains in my fitness. I'm not sure yet if going to 6 will work for me. It's hard because I made this change during the time of year that I find it the hardest to get runs done anyway. Motivation is rarely an issue for me, but I have to talk myself into more runs in the summer than any other time of the year. I am totally willing to adjust mid plan if I need to but I think I'm going to give it a couple more weeks before I make that call. In the meantime, I will take an extra rest day if I need it and see how it goes.4 -
6 treadmill miles this evening. HR avg 181?!! I never looked at it during the run, but I was thinking it felt amazingly easy today. Thought HR would be about 100 or less! It might have been so low that Garmin couldn't find it so it used cadence 😁

@martaindale I have an older NordicTrack, but I love it. It has a wide belt and lots of programs. I never did enter my own programs, but think I could have. I hope you love yours. Great running. I think we all fail at math while running. Sorry about the dog owner being a pain.
@kgirlhart Great running. Love the pictures. I hadn't noticed Sunny's (Lily's) light brown on her face before. She is a pretty girl. The first picture it looks like she is thinking "Ok. You have my picture. Now where is my carrot?" LOL
Great run @Teresa502 . Love that your company has a volunteer day.
Wow @Scott6255 . I don't think an average HR of 181 would "feel" easy. That must be an error of some kind. Great running though. What was your speed?3 -
@eleanorhawkins I'm sorry that your trip did not go as planned. *hugs*
@martaindale That is really frustrating about owners who let their dogs walk off-leash. Even if you think you know your dog's temperament, you never know who/what you might come across that throws them off and makes them act aggressively.
My neck/upper back are feeling a little better today. I ended up going out for my run about 6pm, but it was after a brief rain, so it had dropped from 102 to 95. It was seriously hot though, and even though I took water with me, I ended up walking a good chunk tonight. It was a foundation run, so HR zones 1-2, so I just ended up walking a route with some hills to help keep my HR where it needed to be. I ended up with 2.61 miles.
Tomorrow, my training plan starts incorporating hill repeats. I'm working from home tomorrow, so I'll try to get that done in the morning.4 -

Just over 10min/mi. I'm sure it was cadence lock. It happens at least once a month with this old watch1 -

My favs are trail mix fix oatmeal (the pop up cups are great for camping!) and need for seed or mint condition in bars. The drizzle is great but does not ship well when it's 110° lol

6 miles, easy pace, last night, temps in the low 90s
111 of 160 miles for June
It was a decent run. The low humidity helped. Even though this was meant to be easy I surprised myself by often having a pace just under 9:00/mile and overall my 75% pace was 9:14/mile. The 75% pace is my pace for the best 75% of the run. It eliminates the slowdowns associated with traffic lights, texting my wife, my walking warmup, etc.
Now I'm off to spend the weekend on the boat. First I'll drop Kody off at the sitter's, then a slow run on trails of 6-8 miles. The forecast for tomorrow's race is 90% chance of showers. YES!!! Hopefully no lightning to shut down the race. It will be a small affair. They have a 5K, 10K, and HM. 143 total racers, 57 of which are in the HM.
Have a great weekend everyone!8 -

@7lenny7 will it be a "streak" race if it rains... just asking..
107 out of 100 miles for the month. Woke up with a headache but decided since it was early to take some med and get out for a walk anyway. I think it helped some at least I did not end up down for the count with no workout at all.
@Scott6255 that's funny about your heart rate. I would have to be walking to have an avg of 100. I have on the other hand for sprints gotten avgs over 175 so nothing surprises me. I like to check my watch for pace about every qtr mile and to make sure it hasn't paused itself because music still plays when it pauses... which is strange.
So much good running things happening this month!

@RunsOnEspresso I love picky bars! I use the drizzle on fruit for snacks all the time and the oatmeal cups are really good for camping or no prep breakfast on weeks I don't have time to cook. My favorite is the Can't Beet Chocolate. I've also tried their granola. Delish. Time for a restock!
@7lenny7 Good luck for your race! This time of year I would be excited for a wet race too.3 -

This morning's run felt harder than expected. It is the first time in a while I have done the roll out of bed and run fasted thing. I still drank 10 oz of water during this run because it was already 78F at 5:45am and I was dripping sweat. My stomach is handling the water better than it used to. I think I am finally getting it trained to take in more liquids while running.5 -
Not sure why someone flagged my post. I only wanted to share a discount code. I get no kickback from it otherwise I would have stated that. But thanks for flagging me as spam!3

Yes, I can run!5 -
That is hot @marisap2010 . Some days a wun is necessary. You are doing great.
@Scott6255 My HR would be 181 if I ran at that pace for long. LOL Sounds like it may be time for a new watch.
@7lenny7 Great running. Good luck with the race. I hope it rains on you. Does your watch calculate the 75% pace? That's pretty awesome statistic to have.
That's odd @RunsOnEspresso - about being flagged. I wonder if it was an accident.
I am getting ready to leave for FL on Sunday afternoon, so have a very long to-do list of things that really need to get done beforehand. So, yesterday and today I've skipped my runs and walked a mile instead. I did mow my lawn today too and will probably do the push mowing at mom's tomorrow. Some things on the list probably won't get done, but as long as I do the things that HAVE to be done - like pack and not forget anything, water the houseplants so they don't die while I'm gone, I'll be fine. And, even if I do forget something, FL does have stores...don't they?
5 -
I hope your race went well @7lenny7!
@RunsOnEspresso I've never heard of Picky Bars. I'll have to look into it. From what you guys have described, it sounds like tasty stuff.
Yesterday morning, I did hill repeats before work. It was in the 70s, so it was as comfortable as it was going to get for the day temps wise. This morning's run was a 40 minute recovery run in Z1. I ran 3.03 miles on the track in the gym after my RIPPED class.
Can I vent about people on the track for a moment? There are tons of signs to indicate that the outermost lane is for runners only. Several times, there were groups of people walking across all lanes chatting, as well as single walkers who zig zag across the lanes. It is annoying to have to shout that I'm behind them or weave my way around people.
Tomorrow is 10 miles, so I'll get up early before it is too warm.6 -
@marisap2010 Rant on. I don't know why some people think the rules don't apply to them. You are doing great with your plan. Your recovery run was a great pace.
Just got in another walk today. I did get everything done I really needed to except PACK. I'll do that tomorrow. Since I'm driving, I'm not on a strict schedule. I just want to get to the hotel at the half way point before it gets dark.6 -
Ugh, @marisap2010, people who ignore track rules/are unaware there are track rules are irritating. People who walk across a bunch of lanes completely oblivious to runners lapping them again and again need a smack upside the head.
It was a cracker winter's morning here today - mild and clear. Joined a local running group for 15.5km around a couple of local bays. Stunning views.

@marisapace People don't think rules apply to them. We don't have many public tracks so I've never had to deal with that.
I just get the walkers that walk two+ across the sidewalk and instead of going single file for the short time I pass them they try to squeeze over 🙄 Or they go to the left, instead of right and I have to swerve across the sidewalk because I always try to stay to the right.0 -
I just have to say that I can't even imagine a "cracker winter's morning" right now. Thank you for the photos CMM!
Have we made it halfway across the pacific yet? Currently at 117 out of 100 mile goal. I should surpass May which was one of my lowest mileage months ever.6 -
13.1 miles this morning. First time in 2 weeks I ran outside! It was a shock to the system 😃. It was grossly hot (81°F and a paltry 3mph wind) 🥵 But it was my fastest HM (actually of any distance) in the past 3 months. It was pretty miserable, but it didn't feel like I was going to die. So I think that's progress 😁

Running didn't go quite so well today but that's hardly surprising because I hiked 16km in fairly steep hilly terrain yesterday. And my attempt of loosening my tight leg muscles this morning resulted in lots of bruises in areas needed for running But hey, I REACHED MY GOAL FOR THIS MONTH! 5 days ahead of time. At the hottest and most humid day of the year so far. So lets see if I manage to get in a few more runs.

Evening everyone! I haven't posted on here in forever!!! So with the pandemic, moving country, doing a second masters degree etc etc I completely fell off the wagon but it is time to get my run back on!
My name is Michelle, I'm 41, from Ireland but moved to Stockholm, Sweden. Mum to 3 sons and 2 step sons. Like I said I just finished a second masters degree so I have my summer free which should give me a chance to get running back into my schedule!
I start a hal higdon plan tomorrow for Dublin marathon in October. If anyone has any tips or tricks for the nutrition part I am completely lost.... I want to lose some weight but I also want to cross the finish line!!!!
Target for the rest of June is 10km!!! (only 2 5kms scheduled!)7 -
Welcome back @Sparx_81. Congrats on the double Masters! You have been busy 😁
Trying to lose weight while marathon training is pretty difficult (from experience and many other runner anecdotal studies). Not saying it can't be done, but in order to fuel enough for all that running, eating in a deficit is hard on the body. So I can't give any specific advice, but best of luck to you!4
