Day 2 has gone better than day 1! Have spent some time thinking about realistic goals for this first month. Here they are:
- Log daily
- At least 30 minutes of exercise every day (This is actually less than usual, but in my current injured state I can’t do what I normally do and too often end up doing nothing ☹ )
- Eat meals, not snacks. Healthy choices (veggies, fruits, eggs, fish, chicken, minimal red meat)
- Keep a sleep journal to better understand how sleep relates to other activities. (Ultimately, I would like to achieve ‘good’ sleep on my FitBit and have at least 45 minutes of deep sleep on a consistent basis).
- Drink at least 64 oz water every day

@DD265 You have had a lot on your plate! “Finding it difficult not to pressure myself, so I set these unrealistic targets for things to get done and then when I inevitably don't meet them, I comfort eat. “ … I share some of the same characteristics. Spending some time today to try to care out some productive but not excessive objectives for this week.

@jugar Interesting … your buttocks prob sounds similar to what I am dealing with (although doubt that it is a hematoma) I have dull pain in left seat bone area which becomes a sharp pain that radiates to the groin area when I mount, ride, or when I bend over and come back up. Can absolutely do anything else I would like to do. Anti-inflammatories help some as does sitting on an ice pack. (Seems like something gets inflamed and then presses on a nerve … although which nerve seems to have changed, as the pain changes locations). Very weird. Have appt with sports med doc tomorrow morning. Hopefully, we can identify the issue and get something done. A year without riding is simply not an option!!!

@DD265 I'm glad your room is almost done and you have slept in it the last few nights! It's amazing how much a good night sleep helps stay on track.
My last 2 days have gone well! I have tracked everything I ate and stayed within my calorie limit 😊 The extra day at the gym yesterday left me a little sore today. Peaches are in season and I love a fresh, juicy peach! I am looking forward to another one tomorrow!3 -

@jan110144 that sounds like a seriously annoying pain in the **kitten**! The nerve pain problems can be much more difficult to figure out - mine was a great huge swelling filled with blood. Not at all difficult to diagnose I hope you find a good way to work through it. I had some good luck with acupuncture after the surgery while the entire area was still having odd nerve reactions.
Your plan for keeping things on track looks great, though. It's so hard to stay motivated when injuries make it hard to do what we want. Food makes more difference than anything else in our body composition and mood - exercise sure helps, but start with the food and hopefully the rest will fall into line. Then 30 minutes exercise, plenty water, and getting sleep are great.
@eggfreak what's the ugh? If it is more of those ice cream sandwiches, get out your sharpie! If other stuff, well, you have tonight to plan tomorrow's perfect day. If that is too much, then you'll get there soon. Hugs to you!!!!!
I'll have an "on the road" kind of day tomorrow - starting at 0-stupid:00 to get my taller half to the airport in Montreal (almost 2 hours away), but then having breakfast out and then visiting a flutemaker who is going to work on one of my flutes to see if it can feel a bit better. It'll be a lot of car, sitting, eating, and (hopefully) trying cool flutes while he works on mine Then more car time...

sorry for the 'ugh' - had a mini meltdown this afternoon. I'll log it all. But I did say 'no' this evening, when normally I would have had a 2nd or 3rd bowl of cereal (don't ask why but I usually can't keep cereal in the house either) I had just one and said, enough, to bed. and now I'll go plan my day better tomorrow.3

Happy monday team. The weather felt like a monday here - muggy morning into torrential on/off downpours. very glad that early walks have become ingrained in my routine again, so the rain really wasn't a problem for me.
I went shopping today to buy a beach coverup for my trip to the shore this weekend. Partly, I think I will feel exposed and certainly not confident in my swimsuit this year, but I also burn really easily and wanted some shoulder protection. It was a trial today for sure. The dressing room got me down. And I nearly left with a dumb sarong thing that wouldn't really have helped but was large enough to fit me, but then I noticed a big clearance rack I hadn't rifled through. And wouldn't you know, there was a peachy-orange, very thin, open linen cardigan thing that was just what I had in mind, and fits great. I grabbed it for $15 and an $8 tee shirt that I thought would be good to have on hand. Success!
really good day for eating and movement. I'll have to share some pictures of my meals this week once I get on my phone. For lunch, the star was ricotta toast- I toasted some sourdough, spread a generous layer of ricotta (which is quite a low cal cheese for the volume you get, I add!), topped with a few sundried tomatoes and their oil/juices, a drizzle of honey, red pepper flakes, and fresh chopped thyme with a little lemon juice. WOW. So yummy and well in the budget! Dinner was a chicken caesar salad with bacon. Also delicious.
@DD265 I read the part of your post about making impossible goals and setting yourself up, out loud to my sister on the phone and she said "wow, that's you." So I hear you! I keep chanting, reasonable goals, reasonable goals, don't set a trap for yourself, it hurts!

Welcome to new members and hello to returning members. I’m Michele, 58, living near Philadelphia, Pa. I am married almost 39 years and have two grown children. I am currently living with my husband, daughter, SIL, and granddaughter.
I’ve been with this group for a long time now. I lost at first, plateaued for a very long time, lost some more and recently moved and have gained a bit of weight. Well 12 pounds. I also realized that my new dr doubled my blood pressure meds in the last month at the same time I continued to put on weight. I am having some issues with my feet and ankles swelling. Now I am wondering if that has effected my weight too. But I know it’s also my died and exercise. So something to look in to.
I like the mantra JUST TRY IN JULY. That is exactly what I need. I will say it to myself every day.
My goals for this month will be to:
•be on step team with a goal of 7k a day
•log all of my food everyday-good, bad, or ugly!
•drink 64 ounces of water 💦
•Pilates 3x

Nobody needs to leave a store with something they're only half excited about.. the peachy color sounds like it'll be lovely. Today was good... I knew it was going to be a busy day getting back, and we were plagued with IT issues as our company is integrating with another and they blipped on the email merge... anyway... I got up a bit early and started my day with a lovely walk which I rarely do and it set a nice tone. I walked again at lunch and once after supper to the grocery store and back and got my 10,000 steps. It was also time for the Peloton which I missed yesterday and it was long ride day so I did 60 minutes there.
I was very close to being back in my maintenance range this morning so I feel confident I'll be there for Thursday. The biggest thing is that I didn't panic - just got back on track on the normal deficit I was on before I switched to maintenance.
Early wake up for the office tomorrow so I'm off to bed!6 -

I had a family emergency ( my dad was very ill) and had to travel very quickly, so I would probably not be able to record until I get to a scale. Luckily my dad is recovering well and has been transferred from the ICU to a normal bed. So I can think again. I should be able to get back by the first week of next month5

I'm getting similar aches with the bending/squatting/reaching at the allotment. I binge-shopped again last night. Realistically there are probably 2-3 waking hours in a week where I wouldn't be able to go to a shop and buy something if I wanted it, so I could go for single portions and make extra trips. The problem is I go shopping in a binge-mindset (i.e. I'm stressed/anxious/insert-emotion-here) and buy loads of rubbish. I don't eat it all in the same day, but then it's in the house and I don't want to just throw it out because that's wasteful. That's the position I was in yesterday morning, and again today, so I end up eating the rubbish. Liquorice All Sort anybody?
Personal training was interesting this morning. I did a warm up, then we did some intervals on the rower; 1 minute, where you did a set distance (started at 25m, increased by 25m each time) then whatever time you had left was rest. I got up to 200m in something like 47 seconds, probably could've done 225m but had lost control of my breathing. Then we did back squats; 12.5kg bar to warm up, 20kg bar, 30kg bar, and unbalanced squats where I had a kettlebell in one hand - not a fan of those! Then we did a bit on the massage table; mobility is great, but strength is lacking on the left side, and I'm still not convinced about the right side either! So a few things to look at.
Plan for today is work (booo) and to carry on at the allotment. Today I'll plant up the tomatoes, I planted a courgette yesterday, and I'll start digging over bed 6, which I skimmed the top off yesterday so I can see what I'm doing! I'm also spending 15ish minutes each visit weeding in the beds that are already planted. I will pick one task to do at home as well (there are many to choose from!) but otherwise I intend to chill out this evening; I'm partway through watching the Great British Sewing Bee, and enjoying seeing what people are making.4 -
I love mornings - a perfect time to hit reset. I've prelogged my day up to supper, now to pack it up for work. A half day today as we have my aunt coming to stay for 10 days. Must go clean. And just put on my Fitbit to catch all the steps today.
@PlaneMonkey and @DD265 aches and pains from gardening - think your core goals are great. I did it for a business for years and definitely a good core will help -garden yoga - switch positions and tasks often, and bend your knees and even better, get on your knees - save your back

@ashleycarole86 thank you. I like the phrase that people use now about summer bodies - if your body is on a beach, then it's a beach body! I think even the loss today will help me feel a little better going into the weekend because I am starting to ingrain the good habits and see results again.
@jugar I think I will still be at the beach next Tuesday, so expect a little later weigh-in for me next week. I will try to be brave like Ashley and do it the day after I get home (but I might wait 1 more day) - still great motivation to get movement in and keep tracking while on "vacay." Mentally I am already determined to get my walks in early, because I know the friends I am visiting sleep (really) late sometimes compared to me - plenty of time to get exercise without disrupting the flow of relaxing beach activities!
@DD265 With my bingeing, I would say it really started my first few weeks at college in 2013 when I realized that I was on my own, no parent saying "no", and there were so many convenience stores and dining halls and vending machines within easy reach. That mentality followed me off campus to the point that I have always had a corner store of some kind near my various apartments that I could run to whenever I felt angry, frustrated, giving up or just unable to resist the pull of cheezits and ice cream (not a licorice girl myself). It's still true now. But I'm also using the fact that all the employees behind the counter recognize me from all my snack runs and I want them to forget me as motivation to stay away!! But I'm hearing all that you are saying. In this together

Morning all! I think things are getting back to normal a little bit around here. June has been such a cluster....I'm really happy that it's about over.

Last week started off shakey like I may have mentioned, valve body repair, leaky house, all that good stuff. But on Tuesday, I got a ride over the mountains with a friend/former intern and we had some fabulous Pad Thai (which I haven't had in YEARS) and some local ice cream...I have no regrets lol. The rest of the week was trying to get my momentum going again to work out and failing miserably, until Saturday, that is. I was originally going to to attempt the Glacier Half Marathon but with all the recent expenses, figured that I couldn't do that. Instead, I went with two friends and summited a GD mountain (Wynn Mountain to be exact). It was only 5 miles each way, but around 3500ft of elevation gain (I think we were around 8400 at the top). There was a crap ton of bushwhacking and scrambling, but the views were pretty cool. Coming down, however, was not super fun. With my joint instability (thanks EDS), every step became excruciating, so my opinions on this whole mountain climbing thing are mixed. My quads are still not super happy with me, but yesterday I still managed to bike my 12.5 miles, lift for ~25 mins (normally Mondays are my heavy leg day, but since they were like "nope", I switched it to my upper body), and then do Onnit (a kettlebell workout) with my SO in the evening. I think that hike/climb helped to kickstart me back into my routine.
My downfall has been general lack of preparation that's been spurred by a chaotic schedule, lack of energy, and (tbh) traditional gender roles. "How so" I hear you asking? Well, my SO is a disabled veteran who is home all day just still refuses to help make dinner despite the fact that I'm at work all day. So then by the time I get home, make dinner, and do all that, I'm so beat and don't feel like meal prepping for the next day. I used to be up at 5am and had no problem doing all that (when I wasn't living with my guys when I first came to MT), but now I'm barely dragging myself out of bed in time to get ready and off to work when I'm supposed to. I LOVE to prep snacks, breakfast, etc. but it just hasn't been happening, so it results in me stopping and grabbing something to eat on my way to work.
Goals for this week:
1. Stop being lazy at the end of the workday and actually use my wellness time to take my walk
2. Drink the freaking water! (I'm really bad about not being thirsty during the day)
3. Keep on doing my weight lifting for the muscle gains contest
4. Suck it up and make breakfast/snacks ahead of time
@DD265 It sounds like you are going to have a killer garden this year!! And yay for a good PT workout! Also, the great British sewing bee sounds pretty cool, I'll have to see if it's on anything I have....my 15 yo son LOVES the Great British Baking show (I mean, he can tell you alllll about all the contestants...it's kind of amusing if not unusual), so he may be interested too.

Greetings Friends!
So I think that I am adjusting to the Virginia heat - I think! I take a short walk in the morning and, if I can, I do a workout each morning too. That wasn't possible today because I had a quick meeting (yes, friends, I am THAT person who takes her laptop with her on holiday - just in case!)
But yesterday I used the hotel fitness room to do my workout! I am so grateful that everywhere has air conditioning!
We've been having the best time with our son and daughter-in-law, here in Virginia. And I'm delighted to say that they will be coming to stay with us on holiday in the UK next year. Yay!!
Tonight we're eating at a local Japanese restaurant - I should definitely be able to keep an eye on my intake there.
No, @once_mas, I don't live in the Netherlands, but I have been there many times because my sister moved there 25 years ago, married a Dutchman and I have a Dutch niece and two Dutch nephews. I live in the UK, but I also love the Netherlands!

I need to rely on staying within my calorie range to lose weight because I just can't physically exercise enough to make a difference in weight loss. My hips just won't let me. But being here is definitely encouraging me to do as much exercise as I am able and makes it so much easier to stay within my calorie range. I look forward to a day when I have new hips and can exercise much more and possibly experience a pain free day once in awhile (which I haven't had in probably 4 or 5 years).3 -

@YinxFed so glad you are having fun in VA! I adore it down there (but never had much patience for the summer climate!) Japanese sounds good.
@CarolAnnM2 whatever you are doing, it's working. I've also always heard that it is better (in whatever way that means) to get into a pattern of losing weight without exercising first before adding in physical activity. just gets your body in the mode I guess.
@MoonlitMuse sounds like your home life does leave a lot of responsibility on your shoulders - meal prepping for me on Sundays can turn into an all-day activity, pretty easily. get done what you can, but don't tell yourself you are being lazy when you are rightfully exhausted!
just chiming in to say I had a truly phenomenal tuesday. I told myself I would Cava takeout tonight since it was weigh-in this morning, but Cava is also a lot healthier option than the pizza, thai, or indian I usually choose for takeout (for those unfamiliar, it is a build-your-bowl type place with Mediterranean options). I was worried that I would be over my goal since it is still a bigger dinner than normal but with my walk, workout, and a walk to and from the pool, I am totally in the clear. yes! keeping this effort in mind for the coming weekend.3 -
Everyone is bubbling over with news - these exchanges are what make this team so wonderful. There is some beautiful green blooming over there in the spreadsheet - and the enthusiasm that kicks in when the losses start after a period of "blah" sure helps keep things going. Well done!
Also well done is the sharing of the tough parts. The binge buying, the licorice allsorts (I am very glad those are expensive and hard to find ), those extra bowls of cereal, and the general just eat everything days. Those are difficult moments, and sharing the burden helps get past them, I hope. Thank you for getting here to talk about them. Be sure to come back and share exactly how you get past them, too - that is the exciting part.
@graceojo999 I'll keep you on the support list until the beginning of August, but if you get back to a scale and want to come back sooner, just let me know. I'm glad your father is doing better - hugs to you both!
@MoonlitMuse I second the opinion that you are NOT lazy!! It sounds like you are racing to cram in all the things you need to do, and then there is not much room left for some rest and relaxation. I hope you can find some ways to make the meal prep and other chores easier so that you can really enjoy getting out for a walk or fitting in some "me time". That hike sounds pretty amazing, though - even though it made you so sore! Good move to switch leg day...
I had a very packed day today and will be getting to bed early tonight! We left at 5 to get my husband to the airport in Montreal by 7, then I had a breakfast meeting (a lot more than I usually eat for breakfast, but still reasonable). Then another 90 minutes of driving to a flute builder - I got there a bit early and took a walk around the village before knocking on the door. It was by then a perfect day - not too hot, sunny, gentle breezes. The walk felt good. We spent a couple of hours fixing up my flutes (him) and trying out every flute in the place (me!) then went out for lunch (salade niçoise - fabulous), played duets in an old church for a while (great acoustics), and then I finally headed home. I did a good pilates session to get the driving kinks out, went out and checked on all the gardens, did some watering, and then I had dessert for dinner. Back to more veg tomorrow! I'm looking forward to my few days of being alone in the house.

Hi everyone! I'm so glad to finally have made it on time to get into this group. My name is Shawn and in 42 from the Big Apple and now reside in NJ. I am fighting against myself to reach that goal of where I felt my best when I lost 30 lbs in 2006. It was so easy to get there way back when but my life was different it was about me.
I now have 2 boys and for the past 11yrs I have been trying to recreate that me, that body that I miss and want back and it's been a real struggle. I lost count how many times I'm started over and said it would be my last. 2 yrs ago after a Christmas party in 2019, January 2020 was for sure my last time. I was doing great, although it took me longer than 3 months I lost a lot and a potential health scare made me stop to figure out what made the difference. After I stopped I couldn't jump back in.
I need this to be the end of the beginning a thousand times over. I'm getting tired of saying, "I have to start over." The late night snacking is really what ends up killing all my progress for the day. I workout, drink my water, eat fairly decent and as life settles down for the day my sugar and salt cravings fire up for the night. I will never get where I want to be like this. All my hardwork is essentially cancelled out by the end of the day.
My goals this month are to stop late night snacking.
I need this and am willing to work hard and finally start to see some progress. Thanks for giving me a spot in the group and allowing me to be apart of this challenge.4 -

Today was pretty good but I wasn’t sure of that until I logged EVERYTHING. I HAVE OVER 11,000 steps. My water is good. I did have ice cream but it worked for my day and calories.
I really should check in earlier because I am falling asleep typing and my finger types all kinds of weird stuff. 😂

@MoonlitMuse I had the same reaction as some of the other teammates... there is NOTHING lazy about your life.. lol. It's so hard to get it all done at the end of a long work day. @CarolAnnM2 I still remember @bowens1973 having his first pain free day after his hip replacement. In fact I can hardly remember what his pre-hip days were when our whole life at times felt centered around his pain. I feel for you - and I look forward to that day for you too. Your weight loss focus on food is in the right spot anyway but having the freedom to move your body in ways you want to without pain will be great when you get there.

@eggfreak - I am sort of jealous that you used to garden for a living, but I a) don't have the knowledge (there is so much to learn, I think I'll be a student forever!) and b) think it might take the fun out of the hobby for me.
@Kali225 'being forgotten' is a good excuse to stay away. It's interesting what you say about living near a corner store... when we were house buying, one of the things on my spreadsheet (yep!) was distance from a local shop.
@MoonlitMuse it might be petty, but I'd be tempted to make my own dinner and leave my SO to it for a while. Can also recommend batch cooking if you have the freezer space. The Great British Sewing Bee is so wholesome, I love it! It's a BBC program, if that helps you find it.

@jugar I'm not surprised your tired, but I get the impression it was totally worth it.
Welcome @Shawtytel there are a few of us that struggle with sugar/salt cravings. This group is really supportive, so hopefully we can kick the cravings together.
I went straight to the allotment after work yesterday. Tomatoes planted, some more weeding done, and I also found the parsnips - for sure this time! I did some deadheading at home, and need to give our actual gardens more attention too; the roses have been suffering a bit in the heat, but two of them still have (even after deadheading) an incredible number of blooms. I also did some chores at home, then had a couple of hours in front of the TV. Ended up in bed an hour later than planned because one of the cats came for snuggles at 10.30pm just as my show was wrapping up.
What has tripped me up both yesterday and today is finishing at the allotment quite late. We're all out of batch cooked food and have been too busy lately to make more for the freezer. I do have some breaded chicken etc, but it would've taken an hour to prepare including warming up the oven. I've thought about it and have a few ways to tackle it;- check if there's a timer on the oven to start it warming up 'on time'
- restock the freezer with batch cooked food that can be microwaved
- marinade and cook some chicken which would go with salads
- if actually cooking (e.g. a stir fry tonight), prep the ingredients in the morning/at lunch/before I go to the allotment
The binge mindset has been in situ since the weekend but I'm kicking it today. My therapist has me filling out a thought diary; negative thoughts (which I re-frame), thoughts/feelings when I'm procrastinating and I've got a tab for thoughts/feelings when I'm binging, which is actually a form of procrastination and/or distraction. I've not filled this out since before the weekend... guess what I'm going to be sure to do daily until my therapy session next week?!
I have pre-tracked my food for today and I'm going to fill out my thought diary next...6
