WaistAways Team Chat - OCTOBER 2022

Today was a great day! I was up at 5 and I crushed some productivity early, including a walk with my dog. All before my hubby was up!
Around lunch, we made our way to Canmore, and did our bike ride to Banff and back (with an add on to make it longer). 60 KM, and Brad was impressed with my pace. I pushed hard!
We stopped for lunch in Banff, and I chose an item from the guiltless grill! Felt great about that.
And yeah, the other great thing was when we were home I made a decent amount of progress with house cleaning. When I'm stressed, everything bugs me.. and how messy I felt our house got over the summer with us being away every weekend was one thing. One of my qualities as a perfectionist is I tend not to want to start something unless I can do it perfectly and fully. I also tend to procrastinate if something is stressing me. A coworker shared a concept of moving the needle 1% as a focus on getting things done... you don't have to do it all, but just improve things by 1%. It's so relevant to weight loss too! So yeah, I used that and just did the thing (whatever I could) and I have to say.. it made me feel a ton better!
I am wiped. We taped the Bills game and we're watching it late and then heading to bed. I have a super busy work week including business travel Wed/Thurs, my wedding anniversary Wed (crappy timing on the travel) which will be celebrated with a night out on Friday, and a decent amount of plans next weekend too. Rather than get overwhelmed thinking about it, I'll try to live in the moment and only focus on what's right in front of me.
Have a great start to the next week everyone!5 -
Good morning WaistAways!
@ashleycarole I did 420 exercise minutes last week, goal 240.
It's my birthday week! Weight's a little up, but I'm not off the rails, so back to drinking my water and going for one perfect day until my birthday.6 -
I am re-reading the book atomic habits by james clear and he mentions the 1% changes. @ashleycarole86 you are right how 1% adds up. I am the same way that if I can't do it right, why do it at all? I have been working on my mindset of if I have a bad snack or meal that doesn't mean it has to be a bad day. I highly recommend reading this book if you haven't! It's not specifically about weight loss but his theory about habits can help in any area of your life.2

Hope everyone is well. @jugar loving your trip reports as they come in. @micki48 I'm sure you'll find your mojo soon. I'm rooting for you. Well done @jane_76 for exercising your staying power and fronting an ugly weigh-in. I'm often tempted to ask for a pass when I know that an ugly number is likely (I weigh myself every day so I can see how the wind's blowing, so to speak!) So well done for swerving that emotion this time.
Thanks, @YinxFed - means a lot.
Doing the best I can to not have it derail me. One day at a time.

Another great working day here in Southern France. The most difficult piece I have to play hit the rehearsal hall today, and it was a bit scary, but by the end we were able to get a bit more relaxed and even a bit cheeky and having fun. I think it will be fine! Just those dratted E#s... hate the things on the baroque flute. They are fine on the modern flute, but nasty on the historical instrument. But we'll make it! Playing in a very old castle should make it easier, right? All the guys I'm working with are amazing, which also helps. Tomorrow night is the concert, then the recording work starts Wednesday. Wish us luck!
Updates for weigh-ins:
Only 3 are due, but all 3 missed last week's weigh-in. I hope you're able to be here this week!!

Thanks!5 -
I'm not sure my steps will make much sense for last week, but here there are. The fitbit did not update to the new time zone so I think things might be a bit wonky, but at least the totals should be OK.

Tuesday - 11,110 + 30 Pilates
Wednesday - 13,845 + 15 Pilates

Happy birthday week @CupcakeCrusoe - I always like to take a week to celebrate my birthday too. Hope you've got a great week lined up.
@jugar thank you for bringing us with you to Toulouse - I love France.
I have had a busy day today. I'm getting all of my lecture material together for Wednesday. I'm slowly getting my head around what I need to do to tick all of the college academic boxes. It's an uphill journey at the moment, but I'm getting there.
Did an energetic workout with Caroline Girvan (YouTube) this morning and I will definitely be feeling sore tomorrow. I also took a lot of new measurements this morning and that was pleasantly revealing. Seems like I've shaved a little bit off my BMI, although the changes in inches overall were nominal.
Night night, all.4 -
@lauren_989 It's funny you mention that because I have read that book.. read it last year I think! I have a terrible memory for those things so when my boss was mentioning the 1% rule I had no idea there was any overlap to that book. It's such a great concept though and it's helping me keeping the feelings of overwhelm at bay.
@CupcakeCrusoe Getting that dance on I see... happy birthday week. Enjoy celebrating wonderful you!
@jugar As an appreciator of music but someone with no musical talent, it's so fun to hear about your work! Brad is volunteering for a piano event here in Calgary called Honens (not sure if you know it?) this weekend and as a gift back to volunteers he gets free tickets to the shows, so we're going to get to see a lot of world renowned pianists over the next 10+ days or so.. looking forward to it!
@YinxFed It's so motivating when measurements tell a story... I haven't done many of those but it definitely gives a different pulse for sure.
10/16 exercise:
9209 steps + 144 minutes outdoor cycling
My knees are a tiny bit sore from our big bike ride yesterday, but nothing major. Had a more sedentary day that I wanted due to having to work late and then having plans for a video call with my MIL. Need to get to bed early!
@micki48
@LoraineGB
@bobagurl2017 (for 10/15 only)
Hoping to get your week 2 steps for 10/9-10/15 by tomorrow if possible as I'm travelling for business Wednesday4 -
Hello and happy Monday night! I have been keeping up with posts but then run out of time to post myself. I just want you all to know I love reading your posts and hearing about your journey. @jugar the trip sounds amazing! I would love to hear the recording. @YinxFed Nice work on reducing the BMI! @CupcakeCrusoe Happy Birthday week. @ashleycarole86 Nice work on the bike ride.
I had a very restful weekend and I so needed that. I love mellow time at home, it recharges my battery like nothing else. I am still sore from physical therapy which feels a bit ridiculous. My husband and I had massages for Friday date night. I was a real mess in the upper back area! I had a perfect day today and that felt good. Work has kinda blown up again. Everything is in chaos and there are some many changes I can't keep up. I don't think things are heading in a good direction. May take time to shake out. My boss is really into learning things the hard way. I really hope she moves out of this phase soon!
I made some terrariums this weekend and they turned out so good!
5 -
good morning, love reading all the posts, I glean a little something each time (1% concept) and, as a bit of a hermit at the moment, enjoy reading of squid lunches, bicycle rides, hockey games, terrariums...the workouts you all do - will have to investigate Caroline Given.
I feel that maybe, there's some tide that's turned in me and I can gain back some ground this winter. I forgot to do it this morning, but think I'm going to weigh myself every morning and write that number on some scrap paper and leave it on the counter where I'm likely to go if making something to eat. I'm not so obsessed with weight # it's more the clothes fitting but the number does correspond and so to have that little reminder sitting there might help. And, again, I haven't started yet, but I think I'll become "I am a person who walks at night'. I did a lot of evening walking before and there's no reason I can't make it work several times a week. Good for the brain and body.5 -
Wow @conleywoods your terrariums are lovely!1
-
So I checked my weight last week but totally forget to log it on here (I put it in my Garmin)
Last week: 140
This week: 139.6
I've been good about working out regularly. My lifts are getting heavier and I've been able to stick to a relatively regular yoga routine at 2-3x/wk. It's not daily, which I'd prefer, but beggars can't be choosers. I've been doing a simple 3 minute core routine 4x/wk and it actually seems to be helping strengthen everything there.
I've been falling into some nutritional snafus, but my guys are getting ready to head back to Ohio for a bit - so I think it'll be a good opportunity to reset. I've got to get back to prepping breakfasts because if my day starts out with a crappy albeit convenient option, it's all downhill from there.4 -

I too am really enjoying reading posts but am not posting much as I'm trying to really be present with my mum while she is here. She only has 10 days left
@jugar I hope you have a fabulous time at the concert and the recording is a piece of cake
I'm thinking for our challenge, 'I am a person who does not snack' - goodness knows I need to reign in my snacking so this is going to be my focus until the end of the year when it becomes muscle memory. I am also going back to IF/TRE when my mum goes home, for whatever reason, I do really well when fasting but not so well when I don't. I go to England on 22nd December for two weeks and I would like to be half a stone'ish lighter by the time I travel.
Have a good week all

I was just kind of hovering this week. Not too suprised I'm up a little. I strained a muscle in my neck yesterday and now I can barely move 😫 Hopefully it will feel better soon.6 -
@conleywoods those terrariums are beautiful. Where did you get the inspiration?
@jugar congrats on the concert going well! How did the dress feel?
I've requested the Atomic Habits book through my library, I'm interested in this 1%.... I love the book recommendations from this group, I've learned so many interesting things.2 -
Another bedtime post from beautiful Saint Michel de Lanès - today was a long one. We started recording, and that is always a long process. I was mostly in the role of "listener in chief" today, as they were recording the pieces I do not play. I sit there with the sound engineer, listening to every bit through the headphones and noting down which takes have which strong or weak moment, so that the editing process will be relatively painless, and to be sure that every part of the section being recorded has at least one viable take. It takes a lot of concentration, but not very much moving around. I feel going for a super long walk or workout, but it's too late! I'll be playing for tomorrow's sessions, and listening on the last one of the day, so at least I'll be moving around much more. I did have a good walk during the midday break today. There are plenty of good walking tracks around the castle where we are working. I saw a couple of children trying to catch their escaping hens - it was hilarious. Dad was standing by ready to repair the fencing once the kids finally managed to get all the wayward creatures back where they belonged. Much laughing and shrieking was to be had. And probably swearing under Dad's breath...
@AshenMoon - plateaus are useful to help us get adjusted to a new "normal" but then you'll have to do something new to get things moving again. What small thing do you think you could change to start things going?
@lauren_989 I hope your neck feels better quickly! Those pains can be horrible. Heads are heavy.
So it is already almost Thursday! Here is tonight's update -

Happy Wednesday everyone! It's been a long day but one with a good start by getting to my 6 a.m. Aquarobics class. 3 of us were there and it was nice to reconnect. Our cafeteria at the hospital is small but they do a good job providing decent food for good prices. On Wednesdays, they have a "porridge &/or yogurt bar" where one can get a serving of hot porridge with or without yogurt, nuts, raisins, fresh berries, or chocolate chips. Surprisingly enough, I've managed to stay clear of the bigger doses of sugar and stick with the oatmeal mixture, blueberries (today), and walnuts. A couple of hours later while attending to some desk chores at the pool location where it's 86-degrees F, my stomach was growling as though I hadn't eaten anything all morning! I started to think about all of the good things I could run and get at the cafe. Then, I recalled that I had, in fact, had a lovely bowl of porridge with decent protein from the nuts, too, so that was enough fussing, thank you very much! I drank a liter of water and proceeded to get some more puttering done. If I can take time to walk through the perceived hunger-crisis, the craving and crazy feelings settle down and I feel calmer.
I walked halfway home today after 3 water sessions and my OH collected me for the 2nd half of the trip home. We both had some more water, a quick snack, and then proceeded to take a 2-hr nap. Ah. That helps so much. Tomorrow, I'll have 2 tests - an echocardiogram and a hearing test. Next week, I'll see the Otolaryngologist to do a vertigo assessment and check for any odd growths in my ear canal.
In the evening, I'll be at church choir rehearsal (I'm a soprano) where we'll put Sunday's music together and also rehearse for the Requiem by John Rutter. We'll have instrumentalists to accompany us on November 6th so, it's time to finish learning the notes!
Hearing about Liselyn's fantastic sessions in France is inspiring. I can't wait to see pics.
Time to get ready for the evening chat with our 92-yr-old maman. It's great that she's willing to do FaceTime calls without putting her finger over the camera or something goofy like that.
Nigh-night! Have a great Thursday, y'all. xoxo

Hi!
My wellness coach just announced that we are reading Atomic Habits for our fall book club. I got my copy yesterday. Really excited to read it with everyone here buzzing about it.
@PlaneMonkey The terrarium inspiration was from visiting the plant shops and seeing all of the beautiful creations they have. Then being very grumpy when the price tag was about $150🙀😡My husband loves all things plants so I got him a terrarium book for his birthday. We had a practice run with some jars and plants and moss we collected. The deal is I design them and he keeps them alive.
@jugar Sounds like a very intense session today! Glad you will be moving more during tomorrow's set. We are supposedly getting snow ❄ this weekend!
I have been up at 5 AM this week and getting my workout done ✔ Food has been good but could be better. I am definitely feeling hungrier lately. @EvMakesChanges the cafe sounds good but could be dangerous! Good for you staying strong7 -

Grrr, I really don't think this weigh in represents my weekly efforts 😕 It is what it is. I did have sugar a few times so that happened and could explain things. Boo hoo hoo, wah wah wah...okay I'm done5 -
Happy Thursday!
We had no internet this morning, and then worked like crazy people all day. Now it is getting ready for dinner time
I recorded my hardest piece this morning, and it was actually fun. I am getting to know these musicians better, and we are starting to dare more, to trust each other, and to figure out our little secrets. I think it will be a good recording. Then I was back to the "desk" for the afternoon, tracking all the bits to be sure there is enough good stuff to put together for the final version. Tomorrow, more of the same!
Food. Dinner is soon - I'm famished! Lots of veggies, luckily - back later for the nightly nag!6 -
I hope everybody is well. Time seems to be flying by at the moment, and as I'm off work (was in Mon/Tues) I am losing track of the days.
Your trip to France sounds amazing @jugar. I hope you're enjoying the hard work as much as any down time.
I took 3 days off work this week, so we could get the greenhouse up. I don't think we'll get it done; torrential rain all day today and rain tomorrow with storms in the afternoon. It has been a good opportunity to work on my expectations, and to practise coping when I feel things aren't going to plan. We need to get a bit more done though, as we've left 300kg of concrete blocks and sand on the communal path lol.
On the other hand, my BED recovery is going well, and as a bonus I've lost 1.5lbs this week. Step 2 is planned regular (but flexible!) eating. I've had 10 'binges' (instances I've recognised as over eating or which felt out of my control) and interestingly, only 3 were chocolate related, which I would've said is normally a huge issue for me. 4 of them were soft drink related and 4 were where portions were definitely too big (1 was both, and I acknowledge that I overeat generally; these really felt excessive).
I would like to commit to more intentional exercise, but between work, the allotment and watching our government with incredulity, there isn't time for anything else! In two weeks I have a health check, and I'm hoping to get a dietician referral out of it as well as some motivation to exercise.6 -
WTG @eggfreak !!!!! Great loss for this week. 1.62% - that beats the 1%
@DD265 I hope the greenhouse gets up soon - you are doing an amazing job with that allotment. It is certainly not going to be the perfect plan right away, but your have done a huge amount. And the BED work is impressive as well. Recognizing the patterns, what it all means - you are doing fantastic work. Keep us updated on how this goes - I know that I can totally relate to the portions issues, even after "beating" some of the content issues. Too much of a good thing is still too much. I am inspired by your work on this. Don't sweat the exercise bit - you are working hard. Thanks!
It is time for the Friday folks to get ready! How did that happen? Here you go - don't forget, now!

@DD265 that's a good idea, to track the binge - the what and the why. I think I'll need to start that...ahem...right now, this minute.
@jugar you'll have your memories of this musical trip to savor through the winter ahead as you tromp around on your snowshoes.
I did good with food yesterday. I think I'll try to do a lot more sheet pan roasted vegetables - I find it delicious the next day/cold/hot, whenever. And I feel I can eat a lot of it too being vegetables. I blew it though this afternoon. Wanted to buy my boss an icecream as she was working late through to our meeting tonight - got 3 options, she picked one and upon returning home I ate 'mine' , then 'dad's' right after. Bad. Should have put them in the freezer and eaten the so delicious roast pan veg. It's a bad case of being hungry, getting home and simply just having them available. I must keep that stuff out of the house. (sorry Dad)
Anyhow, back to 'good' the rest of the night, and tomorrow and so forth. Going to write today's and every day's weight on a scrap of paper and keep it on the counter so I see it and remember why i want to eat well.
