Jumping in to start June since Nanc hasn't yet. I am rolling along. I crept up a few pounds last month due to some stress and not so wonderful choices. I am totally back on track the past few days and will right the ship.

Looking forward to another month of travel on this WFPB journey with y'all. :)<3

Bisky, following up on your last post in May. That is so great that Brooks is making better choices and you are wise not to push him. Most of us need to take baby steps into the WFPB life. Personally, I decided on vegetarian many years ago, although I was "mostly" vegetarian before that. I decided on vegan probably 12 or 14 years ago not really sure, but it wasn't necessarily healthy vegan. Then finally WFPB and I am sure my health would be much worse reaching my 60th year if I had not done that.

The funny thing is that nobody really commented on my "choices" when I was younger... smoking, drinking too much, eating crap. When I went vegan everyone was suddenly SO concerned about my health. LOL

Awesome results on your labs. Serious improvements!

Obi has managed to land in the best possible place for him. I am so happy for him, and for you!

I miss Carla too. Haven't heard from her in a while. :(

Also haven't heard from Marilyn. :(

I went out for a cocktail with my boss after we worked today, so not a stellar healthy day, but I only had one and will eat a healthy WFPB dinner.

ETA: I promised myself I would get my 5000 steps every day this week and I did it! I am very proud of that. I've also done yoga 3 nights, and I am going to get back to adding in some strength a few days a week this week. Goal this week is the strength 3x and to do the yoga every night.

Starting the day off being silly... started laundry first thing and after an hour I went to move clothes to the dryer and realized I never actually hit start on the washer. :D So the clothes are now washing.

I signed up for the free trial of MFP premium. I don't think I'll probably keep it but thought I'd check it out for 30 days and see.

Tons of work to do today and plan to be up at my desk by 10:00. I will get in treadmill time later today and might make a run to the grab and go. She texted that a couple of my favorites are in the case.

Going to get the cleaning crew here this week, I hope. I like having them in two or three times a year. The house really doesn't get messy since it's just me, but it's nice to have them come in to deep clean all the floors, baseboards, woodwork, etc.

Mihani - same here! As I was gaining weight no comments about what I was eating. Once I decided to cut out sweets…everyone wants to give me gluten free sweets. I am not saying anything about my mostly vegetarian/ vegan diet. I am just doing me. I did tell Brooks my cholesterol levels were down and I attributed that to replacing cheese for nuts for snacking and cutting out eggs….so what does he make this am? Mushroom spinach egg white omelet loaded down with cheese. He went back into kitchen and I tore it apart eating the mushrooms and spinach and giving the rest to the dogs. 🐶😂😂😂😂

Wow, love the dog grooming space! I always wanted a dog bath and brushing area at the back entry when I had all the big dogs and they made such a mess tracking in and out! No way to do it in my house though.

Nanc, I'm eating broccoli just about every day now that I have the microwave steamer. Crazy how such a tiny little thing can make a big difference in daily habits.

I didn't get as much done as I hoped today. Got sidetracked by some household chores and a nap.

I should clarify that I did have an overall loss last month. I went down 7 pounds, but then 3 came back by the end of the month, so 4 pounds down in May which isn't bad! Just have to get the scale moving the right direction again.

    B - bagel with tahini
L - lettuce and veggie wrap and some potato chips (not a good choice on the chips shouldn't have bought them and will take to the office tomorrow so they will get eaten up by co-workers)
D - smoothie (baby kale/spinach, chia/flax, plant based protein powder, goji berries, blueberries, cherries, cinnamon) I use water as I don't particularly care for plant milk in smoothies.

Magic - Aw, thank you. I think the dog groomer is kinda cute too. He got bonus points yesterday for cleaning and reorganizing the aquarium room supplies. Most of the stuff was in that little back room that is now the dog grooming space.

Mihani - What brand of plant based protein powder do you use? I had stopped adding protein powders to smoothies and I think it was reflected in low protein level. I find when I lose a lot of weight I go up a few lbs and kinda hover there before I lose again. Have you heard about the body having set points and lowering the set point? My nutritionist says our hormones regulate this and why never to make big changes or go into extremely low calorie diets or body will rebound. We will turn on the defensive hunger hormones. (The ones Ozempic suppress). She suggests to increase veggies, fruits and raw or non oil nuts. The weight loss turtle wins the race. I am losing 1-2 lbs a MONTH! It will take 1-2 years for me to get to goal. I have to wrap my head around this and find it acceptable. The thing is, in the past, I have always gained weight back and then some.

Made a roasted veggie dish for later. Going to make Pasta Primivera using chick pea pasta. Also managed to air fry pine nuts without burning them and going to cut up some fresh basil I have been growing. j17gyg1fvxvs.jpeg

The veggies look totally yum, Bisky! I have heard of set points haven't really looked into it much though. And I have had totally the same experience. I could always lose weight quickly but then I would gain it back, over and over again my whole adult life. I'm mostly concerned with health now and slow weight loss is just fine with me. I can't lose it quickly like I could when I was younger anyway.

I've just been buying the Fresh Thyme store brand protein powder the past year or so. It's not as expensive as some and doesn't have a bunch of additives. Store brands are generally significantly less expensive.

Obi really is thin! How is he doing on eating?

Nanc, how's the Mary's Mini going?

Magic - I love French pressed coffee. Better for the environment. Coffee grounds are good for some plants and less plastic.

Mihani - I will have to look for that protein powder.

Obi is at least 10 lbs underweight (about 1/3 rd of his weight). Male cocker spaniels should be between 28-34 lbs. He was 18 lbs when I took him to the vet. He goes back June 6. If he hasn’t gained any weight in 2 weeks we will do bloodwork. He is eating really well. Way too hot to cook. Salads and smoothies. Walked with Brooks at 0600 before the heat set in.

Obi melted into the carpet! <3

Up, only because life is getting kinda difficult these days...I think I told you about my cornea abrasion a few weeks back. Now, it seems I cracked a tooth...biting into a licorice stick I had in the fridge. Have to see a specialist. The prognosis is not good. Might lose the tooth...that means an implant. I am freaking out.

Had the plumber out a few weeks ago and signed up for the electrician and plumber...got horrible news from the electrician. Fuse box needs replacement. I saw with my own eyes...and I know for a fact that you can't run two appliances in my kitchen without tripping it. The previous owner of this place did zero maintenance on the joint.

Just got hit with a $3500 HOA bill for new roofs and pool in our own little subdivision.

I am only mentioning this because this is what is keeping me up at night. My tooth is on the top of the list. The bill for the fuse box is $7500. I can use a zero interest 18 months on that. I have great credit.
I heard about the HOA bill so I am setting that money aside for when they do bill us.

It will all work out. I was just hoping to use all this money to pay down my mortgage. Obviously that is not going to happen and I will be working FOREVER! Thankfully, I do have a job and I do not see them letting me go. Thanks God!

I had a French press before my knee surgeries (and after my last Keurig died). My sister got me the Nepresso. It did come in handy when I had knees replaced. And my niece kept me in pods as a gift during my recovery. I just got lazy and kept buying them.

But done. Love my French Press. So much better and so much cheaper.

    coffee
    mashed with spinach
    chopped salad
    salad with garbanzo beans
    watermelon
    ninja pineapple

Magic - I am so sorry about all the expenses. When it rains it pours. I have cracked a molar on a raw almond. I only eat chopped nuts or softer nuts such as walnuts, cashews and pecans.

One habit I got into years ago when I started having sleep issues was to listen to You tube lectures by Dr. Furman, Dr. Lustig, Dr. Esselstyn, Dr. Hyman. Dr Lustig is an endocrinologist who is not vegetarian but very anti sugar and processed foods. It helps me to remember to not eat gluten free crackers, chips, chocolate, etc. plus his lectures get into a lot of bio chem and puts me right back to sleep.

Obi has another obedience class today. Walked dogs at 5:30 this am with Brooks as it is too hot to walk during the day.

Quick check-in have been kind of blah the last couple days. Glad I have a doctor appt coming up so I can ask about the awful headaches.

Nanc, so sorry about everything hitting all at once. Ugh!!! I used to have a french press for tea but I think I got rid of it some years ago. Teabags are just easier.

Bisky, I am so happy that Obi is with you and Brooks!

My new favorite thing is flavored toothpicks. I am trying to stay away from the tic tacs and finding the toothpicks very helpful. They last longer than a tic tac too.

Oh, and I dropped 2 of the 3 pounds that crept back on, so I'm heading in the right direction again!

So, I had my appointment with the specialist...tooth comes out next Wednesday. Sick to my stomach. Slept about two hours just now...and then, up in a cold sweat.

Not the front, left tooth...the one to the left of it. Going to have an implant. Best option. Bridge would put much strain on the other front teeth. Anyway...if any of you have some success stories to share...please do. Horror stories...not interested.

Holding off on the fuse box. This tooth will cost about $5k.

I am so scared of the procedure #1 and worried something will not go perfectly #2. This, to me, is much scarier than my knees. A couple of people have told me I am that knee warrior...but it's not helping. I cried so much yesterday.

Hoping I am out just one day. They make an Invisalign type deal for you with a tooth. That way, you are presentable. Man, I hope I have learned my lesson to stop being judgmental about people missing front teeth. Sheesh.

Some of you know my story of 25 years ago when I was almost homeless. I did not take care of myself...i was drowning in depression. My teeth took the brunt of it. I did have veneers put on...and my once beautiful, straight, white teeth had to be "fixed" because I had lost so much of the enamel. She did a pretty good job, but they were not my own completely.

Anyway, all the horrors of that time are coming back...and it's just hard to deal with.

    -thanks for listening.

So...I will be on soft food for a long time, healing. The nurse suggested the usual, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs...yogurt, etc.

My list is...vegan homemade yogurt...overnight oats, some kind of cold soups...pasta dishes. I guess I will figure it out. The healing process is going to take about 4-6 months before they can put in the permanent implant. I think that's right. I was so stressed reading about it and listening to the doctor yesterday, I am not sure. I think I need to go back and ask more questions.

Ok, that's it for now. I just needed to put some of my thoughts down on paper. I know things could be much worse...and for that, I consider myself lucky. I have to keep remembering that.

    later, mates. <3

Magic, I am so sorry you have to go through this. It does take a lot of healing time. 50 year ago I was kicked in the mouth by a horse and lost all my front and lower teeth plus had over 200 stitches. Left with a hoof print scar on my chin. First I had a removable bridge with clips. Then I had a permanent bridge. The in 2010 had 6 implants…courtesy of the military with bone graft from my hip. I was quoted over $50,000 for bone grafting and implants from private sector. We couldn’t afford that at the time. Anyways, it was worth it and the sooner you do it the better as you won’t need a bone graft. The things you should really give up is popcorn…the skin and kernels can get under the implant and cause problems. I also use a water pic…put a little mouth wash in it as I seem to clean better than just brushing and flossing. People who don’t smoke and eat healthy heal much better.

Oh no Nanc! I'm so sorry. A lot of pain and suffering and financial blows all at once. :( I cracked a back molar many years ago and it had to come out, but since it was the back tooth I never went for the implant.

Wow, Bisky... I have screwed up knees from my horse years, but I never got kicked in the face. Yeesh... that is awful!

I got my blood draw this morning and the results have been trickling in. Everything looks good except my cholesterol went up quite a bit! It's now slightly over ideal range and that bums me out. Only thing I can figure is the stuff from the grab and go that I've been eating, and a lot more nuts and oils in my diet than I would have had previously. She does use minimal oil, but I think it's just not good for me. I haven't been going there as much lately or it might have been worse. On my own I eat very limited nuts and seeds and avocado, and almost no oil. Maybe a few times a month something that has it. So I will go back at some point but have to be certain I only buy things that have no oil at all. I really want to support the business because they are a much healthier alternative to SAD.

Haven't seen the A1C yet... I'm concerned about that now, especially since I've been feeling kind of cruddy lately and I had put on a few pounds going to the grab and go so much. The food is very healthy, but more calorie dense than I am used to, and I don't know that is healthy for me and my body just can't process the richer higher-fat foods anymore. I've lost the pounds I put back on, but I'm anxious now. I was pre-diabetic 12 years ago but after losing 70 pounds haven't had a problem with it since. Now I'm worried, because I do have a family history of diabetes.

    We'll see!

Mihani - Hang in there. The fats in nuts and avocados are healthy fats and your body does need healthy fats in the absorption of certain Vitamins. I once had cholesterol accidentally checked twice with in 1 month. One level was within normal and other was slightly above normal. How were your triglycerides?

I was turning out a young horse on a fall day and she felt good and started bucking…caught me in the face.

Mihani…there are a few steps getting an implant. Start planning all your soft foods. Make a list. I had to have liquid and then soft foods for several weeks. Soups, mashed potatoes, bananas, broths, etc.

Today I microwaved little potatoes in the vegetable microwave basket. Then sautéed them in vegetable broth. Obi had the rest of his shots. He has gained 0.4 lbs in two weeks. Does not sound like much as I can gain 1 lb overnight. Gentle yoga was fantastic today. I have really bad posture and weak back & core muscles from abdominal surgery last year. Swimming and yoga helping.

    Mihani Posts: 4,102 Member
Bisky, triglycerides are good and HDL, but LDL increased a lot despite an increase in regular exercise, so it's troubling.

Glad yoga went well and is helping. Have you looked into wobble cushions? I use one intermittently at my desk and it really helps with keeping aware of your core and posture.

I love horses and enjoyed all my years owning and working with them, but they did some damage!

Up in the mid of the night...instead of staying in bed, I get up and do stuff, wear myself out and then back to sleep. NOT ideal, obviously, but stuff is getting done.

    my list so far...
after surgery, smoothies, cold soups (cauliflower and not sure what else...maybe zucchini, and borscht)

later... mashed potatoes, homemade soy yogurt, tofu scramble, apple sauce, overnight oats, yogurt and bananas...not too bad.

I have never used a protein powder in my smoothies...any great recommendations?

    That's it for now.

    today:

    coffee
    overnight oats (blueberry)
    mashed with spinach
    chopped salad
    out of watermelon (darn)
    steamed broc
    ninja "ice cream"

Mihani, wait til all the numbers come and and you can sit down with the doc and go over them. Tweak places you can in the meantime. You are on the right path.

I have calmed down a bit since the initial game plan-IMPLANT! I texted the doctor yesterday and they got back to me immediately to alleviate my fears and answer my questions. I know for sure I am in good hands...I trust my dentist and I know he sent me to the best specialist.

I am not going to fret any longer about paying the house off. I will save when I can, but not put the money in ... too many things have been coming up and I need the extra cash. Luckily I can pay for everything so far (with the exception of the electrical--that has to wait)...

I thought pay extra for the house as I go along...but that does not seem to be the best route. I can save save save...and then pay all at once. Better plan to be on the safe side.

back to bed. be well, my friends.

Mornin' all... Nanc, I hope you get some more sleep! Your game plan for eating after the implant sounds good. Glad you are feeling a little better about it. I would be freaked out too.

The A1C finally came through and it's fine as well, so other than the cholesterol being up a little over the ideal range, nothing at all looking bad in my bloodwork. So I'll talk to the doc and see if he can figure out why I've been having these headaches, brain fog, and fatigue. I wonder now if it is all just stress. I carry so much tension in my shoulders, neck and jaw. My dentist made me a mouth guard for night because I was actually knocking my teeth loose grinding and clenching. :#

I'm up so I'll head to the office early, then going to leave early afternoon and run some errands. I want to buy some perennials for the front yard and get them planted tomorrow. I'm going to try to take the entire day off tomorrow to get stuff done around the house and plant the flowers, read and relax. NOT think about work.

    Happy Friday!

Magic- I am glad you feel better about the implant. At least the interest on the house is a tax deduction. We thought about doubling up our payments on the house once Brooks retires but everything is up in the air.

Mihani - I think if you A1c is good, you triglycerides, HDL are normal then overall you are doing good but an excellent conversation for your Dr. I thought of you last night. I woke up in the middle of the night and was listening to research on low fat vs low sugar diets. In the 90’s extreme low far diets were popular but they loaded up the processed junk foods and healthy foods with sugar to make them taste better. Cholesterol levels, heart attacks and strokes did not decrease. The sugar in chips, carbs, alcohol, high fructose corn syrup all continued to contribute to T2Diabetes and clogged arteries.

Was up before 0700 and walking dogs, feeding dogs, watering plants and cleaning did not get myself organized to swim.

Did not feel like cooking. Did an Indian eggplant curry on rice from Trader Joe’s. Brooks cooked zucchini slices & onions to add. No appetite in this heat.

Bisky, that's interesting. Except I don't eat what I think is a low fat diet, I'm just very selective about the fats I eat (nuts, seeds and avocado) and the only thing in my diet that changed is adding oil back with the grab and go foods, so even though they are plant based and healthy, and she uses minimal oil, they may not be for me. She does have a lot of things with nuts and seeds and no oil though and I will just stick to those. Only thing to do is remove oil again and see if those numbers go back down. I also rarely eat sugar or refined carbs so that doesn't explain it either. Very odd.

I did take my blood pressure yesterday. It was up some when I went to the eye doctor a few weeks ago although that was the day of the hard drive failure and I figured it was just stress, but yesterday it was still 136/78. I have never run above 120/70 and usually lower than that, so it's another thing to discuss with the doc.

Bought some daisies yesterday and will get those planted. My neighbor is going to dig the holes for me. It's supposed to be a gorgeous weekend so I'll try to get some things done outside of work and only working from home not going to the office. I want to clean my car inside and out, clean up the garage, laundry. Plus I have been putting off cleaning up my file cabinet in the office for years now and need to get on that. Going to make the E2 hummus too.

    Plan for today...
B - half a sweet potato, steamed broccoli and kale, an orange
L - big wrap with loads of veggies and hummus
D - sauteed peppers and onions, steamed asparagus, corn on the cob with a tahini drizzle

I am going to run to the grab and go and get a few things with no oil and a smoothie. She makes awesome smoothies loaded up with greens and fruit. Fresh Thyme started carrying their own juices and they have a few that are almost all greens not so much fruit, just lemon, so I got a bunch of those.

Oh, and Nanc, I buy the Fresh Thyme brand of plant based protein powder, but I have tried vega (pricey), plantfusion, and garden of life. I'm a fan of the NoMeatAthlete and he has his own brand now that I am going to try soon. https://lovecomplement.com/collections/shop-all

Ran some errands and stopped at the grab and go. Got several things that are no oil. Didn't get a chance to talk to her about her thoughts on my cholesterol being up but I think I need to stick to the no oil items and see what happens. I do want to support her business because it's awesome and she has some great ideas for making it even more awesome.

I think it must be olive oil too. I am trying to cut back on it too. Especially with cooking. Brooks slathers it on. 😬.
We took a short flight to Phoenix and then drove up to Sedona. It is much cooler here. Obi is chilling with my friend who I trade dog sitting. They have a dog door!

We hit Trader Joe’s, loaded up on groceries as our little place has a kitchen!
Short hike tomorrow and then sit pool side. Have a great book to read about Finland. o2vhq4icdoxv.jpeg

Wow, beautiful Bisky! That looks like a very relaxing place to be. I don't think I could handle the heat in Texas. I am not sure about the climate there, is it humid? That's the problem with Ohio. It gets hot and SO humid in the summer it's like wading through the air!

I avoided a nap yesterday, but then turned on the TV and fell asleep on the couch at like 5:30. Got up for a few and went to bed at 9:00 so I was up at 3:30 wide awake. I got some of my chores done yesterday. Still need to do laundry today.

Mostly going to work today. I really think I'd feel better about life if I could get through some of these files that are weighing on me. It's hard to get anything finished during the week because it's always chaos.

    Plan for today...
B - no tuna salad on ezekiel with tomato and lettuce, a few walnut halves
L - hummus wrap with lots of veggies and lettuce, pumpkin seeds
D - leftovers from dinner last night. I mixed tahini, a little water, lemon juice, pepper and fresh parsley. It was delightful drizzled on the corn on the cob.

Mihani, I wish with all that stress and work I could relieve the burden from you. I hope you get to garden and enjoy a few moments to your self this weekend.

Brooks is sleeping in. We went to bed at 10:00 pm which is midnight our time and I have been up since 6:00 am. The radiation is definitely affecting Brooks this week. Glad we are here even if we don’t do much. Our little place has a blender so I am making us healthy smoothies to start the day. Made a delicious salad last night with blueberries, sunflower seeds, pistachios, onion mixed greens and topped with balsamic glaze. No oil.

Ok, Again We need to move from San Antonio. It would be very cheap to retire there plus medical care has been very good BUT the everyday quality of life is…Boo. There are so many highways that cut through the city. The violent crime. The overall ugliness of the city… there are some pretty areas BUT…. And then the heat and humidity. It is not right that we feel the need to constantly escape when we can. And we feel so much better when we do get away.

Sedona is beautiful but we want something cooler, mountains, water and a healthier lifestyle like we had in Colorado. I just don’t know where that would be yet.

The salad sounds great, Bisky. Hope Brooks is feeling better soon.

I ended up going back to bed for a few after I got the laundry done, and will head up to my desk after an early lunch. My neighbor helped me dig holes and plant the daisies. I'm on a tight budget right now trying to pay off my line of credit from the remodeling, but next year I will get a landscaper I've used in the past over to help me plan and plant some real beds. I am all about hardy perennials that can survive my neglect, and used to have tons of them out back, but the dogs trampled them all to death long ago.
