Weddings, graduations, vacations - June is a wonderful time of year! It’s also a great time to really enjoy those healthy habits that you’ve been working on since January.

What are you going to work on in while “June is Busting Out All Over”?

Maybe you might want to set healthy habits using the 5-2-1-0 approach. Here’s what those numbers represent every day:

IMG_1652.jpeg

While you may want to focus on your flexibility, strength, or food choices exclusively like I did in May, there are so many things to do at this time of year. Gardening? Swimming? Camping? Festivals?

Who’s planning a vacation in June?

Try setting up your habit using this loop!

Cue:

Seedling Habit:

Reward:

Or

Try framing your goals along these lines:

1. My goal for this month (This June I will...)

2. The small, actionable steps I plan to take towards this goal

3. My reminder or cue to keep up with my habit

5. My reward for maintaining the habit (anything from a self-compliment to a mark on the calendar)

6. How can we support you?

7. What will success look like at the end of June?

So let those healthy habits bloom in June!  Here’s to 30 days of making real, meaningful progress in self care.

Thank you for starting the June opener @77tes

Monet is one of my very favorite classical artists that I used to see when my Mom would take me to the Baltimore Musuem as a child. Of course Degas with the horses was the one I got a postcard from. My treat for not whining when she dragged me into the museum. And the 2 stone lions out front. WOW.

I think I am going to work on this below for June but I do not have a complete plan formulated yet.

    1. My goal for this month: This June I will work in my garden beds and yard at least 10 minutes (1 session) per day

    2. The small, actionable steps I plan to take towards this goal

    3. My reminder or cue to keep up with my habit. Seeing it in my daily tracker as a line item

    5. My reward for maintaining the habit (anything from a self-compliment to a mark on the calendar) the beds will not be overgrown with grass and look bad

    6. How can we support you?

    7. What will success look like at the end of June? healthy garden beds

    Dirt - Mental Health

@SummerSkier I love your goal! All kinds of benefits to gardening besides the beauty of well-tended garden beds. Are your beds flowers or vegetable or both? Here’s an article about how good digging in the dirt is for you.

    June Yoga 🧘

After reviewing my previous goals for 2025, I realized that the only one I haven’t maintained is my yoga practice, so this month I intend to get more flexible and calm my mind.

    1. My goal for this month is to do 30 Days of Yoga

    2. The small, actionable steps I plan to take towards this goal. I will preplan when I can fit yoga practice into my day.

    3. My reminder or cue to keep up with my habit. When logging my breakfast, I will put the planned time into my MFP notes, pushing for an earlier time in the day whenever possible.

    5. My reward for maintaining the habit (anything from a self-compliment to a mark on the calendar) . I’ll sing a song and give myself a yogi emoji.

    6. How can we support you? Be here to encourage me and help with suggestions.

    7. What will success look like at the end of June? Greater flexibility and mindfulness as well as I’ll have re-established my daily practice.

    🧘

June 1 - I didn’t preplan because I hadn’t decided yet how to cue this habit. Still I got it done before dinner but after coming home from a dance workshop.I sang Change Is Gonna Come

I keep forgetting to wear my tracker so my goal will be to close 3 rings daily.

    1. My goal for this month. Closing 3 rings daily.

    2. The small, actionable steps I plan to take towards this goal. Continue my daily walks and 3x workouts.

    3. My reminder or cue to keep up with my habit. Charge the watch on the end table so I don’t forget to put it on.

    4. What will success look like at the end of June? Seeing all completed rings at the end of the month.

    @hcoleman232 great plan!

Good that you’re already anticipating an obstacle and planning to avoid it. My daughter loves closing the rings on her watch, but forgetting to charge it is a struggle. She just got an aftermarket charger (I think from Amazon) for those times she doesn’t get it fully charged before she needs to leave home. How does your garden grow? And how’s the ouchy foot. 🦶

    🧘 🧘

June 2 - I didn’t preplan because I did my yoga routine first thing, I did sacrifice my spin bike because it gets too hot in the playroom later in the day. I did, however jump on the rebounder while it was still in the shade and grab an exercise snack. To celebrate, I sang “Turn, Turn, Turn.”

    1. My goal for this month (This June I will... Track and weigh my food daily to aim for a Calorie deficit

    2. The small, actionable steps I plan to take towards this goal .. check in to mfp groups daily to keep me on track

    3. My reminder or cue to keep up with my habit. Put food scales out on kitchen bench

    5. My reward for maintaining the habit (anything from a self-compliment to a mark on the calendar) mark it on calander

    6. How can we support you? Provide support, suggestions. The last 6 months i hvent tracked properly, honestly or consistently. I am always so motivated at start of month then i allow myself to get derailed by work. So please feel free to keep me accountable.

    7. What will success look like at the end of June? To track for the whole month and to be either the winner or champion for mfp .

To see the scale go down

@donna25trinity so nice to see you back!

@77tes my outdoor activity is not really gardening per say as far as vegetable or flower beds but more taking the time to clean up and weed the areas which need it.

June1 - pulled grass out of the areas alongside the front walk and sprayed with non toxic weeder (which doesn't really work but I feel victim to a tv ad….. LOL)

June2 - chainsawed the large limb of the desert willow tree which was blocking my front walk completely and I had propped up so people could duck under it. And then cleared away the branches and painted the cut with tar made for that purpose. The photos are not as dramatic as the actual change but I wanted to do this because walking on my yard grass was hurting my injured foot so now I have a clearer path around. and yes the foot is about at it's worst I suppose altho I have been able to walk better and feel more sturdy so maybe I am getting used to it or it is starting to subside a little bit.

That’s a great plan @donna25trinity ! It’s wonderful to see you back in the Building Better Habits Group! Be sure to celebrate every time you mark the calendar! Do a victory dance or give yourself a pat on the back.

@SummerSkier weeding and chainsawing sounds like real gardening to me !!! Your landscaping looks very cool nice lawn. I love Desert Willows. But what will the hummingbirds do with their feeder gone? 🤣

So today's yard work involved using my brain instead of brawn. The house behind mine is a rental and the past few years the folks have been really nice but they have let this stupid vine grow all over the back fence. They moved out and the landlord was there today working on the fence a little. I went over and casually asked her if when they did the yard they could take the vines off the fence. She said "that's on the to do list" so fingers crossed they pull that down as it is pretty awful and full of ants and stuff destroying the fence.

    30 27 Days of Yoga

    🧘 🧘🧘

June 3 - I again did my yoga first thing in the morning with the help of my puppy. I like doing yoga in the morning, but I’m not sure I can keep it up regularly. I did sing something, I remember thinking that it wasn’t really a good fit, but now that I’m writing this, I can’t remember what it was. 🙃

@77tes I found when I wanted to add the balance I did it after my morning jog. Perhaps doing a small session of yoga after your daily walk (I know you are still doing those!) would be a good place to put it. I still do a little bit of calestenics after I jog and altho not really jogging right now I am determined to do the situps/pushups/stretching/heavyhands as my foot AINt broke for those right? It's very rainy today so not sure what will get accomplished. My mower is supposed to come and he does even when it's rainy .

How is everyone else coming with their June so far. Day 4 today.

I've tracked, weighed food, drank lots of water and had my shot of acv daily.... i had rasin toast instead of icream last night for a treat.....These are my main goals for june..

Recording in my calander has been good as it's like there is pourpose to it all.as it's visual and I hve to tick it off daily... This group reminded me to do that so thanks. I've used this in the past and works well...Xo

Great going @donna25trinity starting the summer off right!

Yesterday was not a great afternoon for me as the low feeling about being injured and lack of running combined to have me binge after work. sigh. Today is a new day. I did have my lawn mowed and it was rainy so that is a plus I guess.

And I am up early because I was suspicious the CATS were not in the bedroom. As I thought I found a tree roach had gotten in the house and so I had to take care of that before anything else! 🤬🤬 I think I will always need cats as a line of defense to bugs. 😏😂✅

IN other news I looked at my thyroid annual bloodwork results as I have my endo appt next Wed and the #s are good and slightly better than the last 2 years so unless the ultrasound (I do that every other year) shows some issue I should be able to stay stable on small synthroid dosage. I was a little worried because the past month I have had a few days where I just felt "tired" out but I think that might be attribuatable more to the cold I had the first few weeks in May more than anything else now that I ponder.

And that is more than yall needed to know. I think I am going to use the HOWING tool today to rake at some of the grass starting to sprout in the wrong places today for my little yardwork.

Good morning folks late on my goals but better late then never.

I want to read one more book this month since I usually read only in the evening, to continue to eat healthy and prepare for the Whiskey Run 5k walk.

    30 25 Days of Yoga

    🧘 🧘🧘🧘🧘

June 4- Well, I got my yoga done but was interrupted about a million times. I could have done it first thing, but that was at 4 am after the puppy needed to go out. So, I went back to bed, and missed the window of opportunity.

June 5 - Got my yoga practice in before 7 am. Maybe I should just commit to doing it first thing.

  • 77tes
    77tes Posts: 9,244 Member

@SummerSkier , sorry that you’re missing your runs. That’s discouraging. However, hooray for good bloodwork!

Oh do you have a hula hoe? I saw a gardener using one , and promptly went out and bought myself one. It makes quick work of my weedy side yard which I only hoe once or twice a years.

Thanks for the suggestion of when to do my yoga. My problem is traffic because the only place to do yoga is in the middle of the living room, basically in the path to the door. (Downside of living in a small house with other people and too much stuff). I can and have done it outside, but that takes more preparation (sweep the spot, lay out a beach blanket to keep my yoga mat clean).

@snowshoe072 , I am mostly listening to audiobooks lately, but reading a print book is much better and is a great way to wind down at the end of a busy day. Are you still doing those awesome lunchtime walks to train for your Whiskey Run 🥃?

  • snowshoe072
    snowshoe072 Posts: 5,747 Member

@77tes YES we are still doing our lunch time walks there’s been a decrease with last weeks rainy weather but today I averaged a 20:34 pace and we did almost 2.5 miles the humidity was bad our first 90 degree day and smoke from the Canadian fires. The 5k is June 21 and then a small sampling of small batch bourbons and vodkas. There are some truly creative brewers out there.

I am currently starting Bradbury’s F451 never read it before but I think today’s world calls for some classics with a message. I have a difficult time with the audiobook. Perhaps I will try again someday.

@snowshoe072 Yes, F451 is a terrific read! But not exactly cheerful. I currently listening (again) to the Lord Peter Whimsey books by Dorothy Sayers. The secret to audiobooks is to get a really good reader and to re-listen whenever you get distracted or fall asleep.

  • SummerSkier
    SummerSkier Posts: 5,741 Member

I love using the audiobooks and I listen to them while I walk. Typically too slow for me while I run so I do tempo music.

My favorite reader is R C Bray and I will find books he reads a lot. @77tes who is your favorite reader?

No gardening yesterday sadly. I only have a little hand trowel and not a fancy set of tools and I just was not motivated after work yesterday altho I did go out for a little half mile walk. My foot seems to feel better moving on it in the afternoon which is strange since you would think sleeping and being off it all night would be better.

@SummerSkier , I like Stephen Fry for the Harry Potter books, and Ian Carmichael for the Peter Whimsey books (although there’s a new reader who is good too - Mark Meadows). I mostly get mine audio books from Libby or Hoopla library apps.

Yesterday was a pass day, I went out to dinner and ate way too much food then I bit more cake wen I get home.... I def used food as reward/ entertainment and celebration that i survived another work week. Great to be tracking again & to be aware of calories, cos altho my weight is pretty stable since i started intermittent fasting 6 months ago and all my picking and grazing at food has stopped which is great, im still not loosing weight . So if I want to loose weight I need to keep calories lower, try keep desserts to a limit and keep track track tracking...Xoxo

Aha… sorry Donna but you are here and keeping with it which counts

@77tes you misunderstood. I was not asking about authors but narrators.

  • 77tes
    77tes Posts: 9,244 Member

It’s hard to get over Friday celebration attitude. @donna25trinity I struggle with that on nights I go dancing-I figure I should be able to eat all the snacks. Fortunately for me, the bringer of homemade goodies moved away, so the store bought ones are much easier to eat in moderation. What is your intermittent fasting window?

@SummerSkier , I was also talking about narrators. I’d like to use Librovox because the narrators are all volunteers, but I can rarely stand the reading. For instance, the first full sentence of Pride and Prejudice is a perfect test of a reader. The phrasing is sure to trip up all but the best readers. Stephen Fry narrated the British Harry Potter books - I don’t like the American version narrator Jim Dale. The British version hasn’t been available until it was recently re-released and is now available on Hoopla.

Thanks for the encouragement @SummerSkier and I'm sorry to hear u are not being able to run atm. Wat work outs are u doing instead? I got right into daily jogging over the last 5 years but gave it up prob 6 months ago cos I cld feel strain on my knees.. I do really miss that high u get so much but I stick to other work outs like walking, boxing bag and weights instead.... it kinda does the job!!!

@77tes yes I know wat u mean about homemade goods always so hard to resist right!! I was actually discussing my fasting with hubby after I posted and we worked out it's actually been a year not 6mths I've been fasting for. I do omad, so I eat dinner but also hve a snack on some nights too... I usually do 19 to 21 hour fasts... i lost 4kg then weight has stood still for the last year...i haven't had to count calories which is grear but for the last 3 kgs ive worked out I'm going to count calories. . Do u fast if so wat do u do?

  • SummerSkier

Well good morning and my PLAN worked! The back fence weed is gone after the landscaping folks did the neighbors yard. So I am counting that as my habit. but honestly this month is tough. I did sign up for a new dentist appt on the 20th so I am getting back to flossing with a vengence for a few weeks to see if my gums will look their best. LOL.

@77tes that's funny about the volunteers not being able to read. One of my secret talents is that I can read aloud very well ever since i was a child but I never thought to try to read for an ap and I do not think I have a very good voice (listening to my own voice msgs makes me cringe).

@donna25trinity I do not try to do fasting anymore as with my binge nature it only leads to that stupid rollercoaster of restriction and also I do not think my body deals with a non consistent input as well as it did when I was younger. For me its all about counting cals. I am able to walk and do some calistenics and have just started after a week of trying out a little run and walk type workout because it is difficult to get my heart rate up and I do miss it. Plus all my health aps are screaming at me. LOL. I wish they had an "injury/recovery" place but it's all tech. I could never survive on OMAD either.

@hcoleman232 well done on the rings!!! My challenge from Apple this month was to walk or run almost 10 miles a day 14 times.. I guess no one told the algarythm I had an injury? Next month it will probably be walk 1 mile 10 times.

Good on u for finding other alternatives to running... good ur giving ur body time to recover....love the flossing the dentist lol.. I must admit I'm lazy with flossing... yeah I know exactly wat u mean with the binging with fasting, it's really easy to do.... thankfully I hve had it under control for the most part. I think the fasting has actually helped curv my binges as there is less opportunity to binge... my main problem was all the picking and grazing while I was standing up prepping mine and my families food. Then I would not track these calories... really bad habit I got into... Now that I fast I don't do that anymore... so there is less opportunity to do it cos I just know if I'm prepping lunch for my Lil one that's for him and my well deserved meal will come at night... it's so good when we find wat works for us.. xox

@donna25trinity, those are some long fasts! I think I’ve only ever done 13 hours, maybe 14. Still, I know it would be really good for my health. But I am a bit nervous about diving in.

@SummerSkier , I’m jealous that you’re such a good reader. My sister is as well. I’m okay until I read anything past 4th grade level. I think most the volunteers at LibriVox are good readers and have okay voices, but they don’t practice getting it just right or redoing or editing.

Bravo for getting those vines taken care of!  You saw it and said something about it at the right time.

Those fitness apps are mean coaches and never let you have a rest without scolding you. I can just hear the angry coach yelling at you, “Stop whining…only whimps take off when they’re injured.”  Seriously though, I really think they could program in rest days and an injury recovery button.

@hcoleman232 , Wowsers! What a fabulous week of success. 🤩

June 7 - Short routine today, which was perfect for a very busy day. I did it in the morning, but I had to allow the living room to clear before I started. Still, I was finished before breakfast.
