I am new to MFP, so I'm sure that others can help better, but to those who gained - don't get discouraged and quit!
I have spent the last 5 years starting and stopping various things to lose weight and at the first sign of things not going perfectly, I quit. In addition, I now know that I have been under-eating consistently. It took me about 3 weeks on MFP to figure it out and I finally think I have this deficit thing down (at least until I lose a good amount and then I am prepared to adjust).
-be HONEST about what you are putting in your mouth
-eat some (at least) of your exercise cals
-don't quit! That's why my main profile pic is not my face, but is that cheesy runner lady. I want her *kitten* and I'm not going to quit this time until I have it!
I hope others can provide their two cents as well. Like I said, I'm new here, but I have learned some good lessons already.
ETA: I gained in week two here because I was working out hard and eating too little. (At least I'm pretty sure that's why.)

Muscle weighs heavier remember, so maybe it was a muscle gain!0 -

Hang in there! I know it is tough when the scale barely moves but remember it did move so keep on working MFP and you will see results.0

Overall I have lost 6 pounds in the last 3 weeks, so it seems I am in a plateau.0 -
To all of us that didn't lose or just barely lost (like myself) and those who stayed the same, WE HAVE GOT TO BE STRONG. Most may agree with me that it doesn't take long to put the pounds on but it sure takes a long, long, long time to get it off. Today is the beginning of week 2, don't look back look forward.
