I work at the pool, so I know when it is the quietest. I also have a key to the building, so I could swim when we are closed, but that could get me fired.

heh brilliant. Is the pool open to all, for the whole day?

I have from 6:30 -9am as the longest session available with lanes (weekdays only). Pretty decent population in the fast lane all through that. But.....they 'open' at 6:30 so earliest I have ever made it past reception and into pool is 6:40 - then I start work at 9 so have to be out of pool at 8:30 latest. I could probably squeeze a 5km into that but it would feel rushed and I couldn't cool down/steam room after properly :/ 1st world problems I know. I save my 5ks for when I have a day off work! :D

Some managers have no sense of adventure. A good inside advantage.

We have 6:30-9am M,W,F but I start work at 8am so really have to be out the front door by 7:30 to make work so less than an hour in the water. M & F they have a 6-7:30pm with one dbl lane. its either packed or empty no rhythm or reason. At least then I can get the full 90 minutes. Although it can be hard to do drills if you get a random paddler making slow circles. Which is why I like the Adult Swim Club - we have 90 minutes of structured drills and you get the full 90 since we follow the local youth swim club.

I work at an Olympic sized pool that runs lanes width wise, so up to 22 if we close our dive well. We are open to the public 5:30am - 9:30pm weekdays and 9am - 6pm weekends. There is always at least 3 public lanes for lap swimming, except during high school swim season.

We can swim, but never alone. If I want to swim after 9:30pm or before 4am (we have swim team 4-6am) I can as long as someone else is there on deck, we can use the pool responsibly. We had one guy jumping out of the rafters and that's a huge no no!

Wow some great swims going on.

I think I would find a 'lanes across' olympic pool so frustrating....do they ever put the ropes the 'right' way so people can enjoy the stretch of water Yosemite?

(I still miss my 33m pool which was pulled down and replaced nearby with 25m....and occasionally get to a 50m one)

52 laps last night, 45 + 30 min in the water cardio class this morning. I'm really grateful for my pool's hours after reading some of your experiences here. My community center is big enough that there are always lap lanes open for swimming. Sometimes it might be only one lane (if the cardio class & lessons are going on), but generally, you can almost always get in a lane. I've had to circle with 4 or 5 only a handful of times. If I go midday on my days off, I can almost guarantee my own lane.

We put in long course for swim teams a couple mornings a week, but the public does not get to swim long course very often.

2300m of nonsense. Two slow breaststrokers in the lane who kept going in front of me from the end so it was a navigational disaster and not the programme I'd intended. But it was still a swim!

ARGH! I dislike those people immensely. :s I don't care what stroke you use or if you swim slower than me, I DO care if you don't check at the end of the lane and let me pass!

    my morning was:
    4000m

1600m front crawl (28:54) well happy with that first mile

then forgot to set timer and fought boredom around the 2000m mark so the remaining 2400m was a mix of front crawl, then some breaststroke and backstroke to strecth out in the last 1000.

Was a bit miffed I didn't get the 5km done. But I finished the 4 at 8:05. I could have done the last km by 8:25, but I wouldn't have had cool down time as would have had to race to work for 9:00. ah well.

Feeling your pain. As a Slow-Middle of the pack swimmer I always try to be aware of
Who is in the lane with me
What are they doing- easy peasy or pushing a pace-workout
Where they are relative to me.
Many times I drop to the side at the wall for a faster swimmer to go by. With certain people It's just about routine.
Yume on 3 laps, Kevin on 5, Steve on 6 - watch out Yume should be right on his heels, etc.
So when I catch up to others you sort of expect the same courtesy. Not always. With the regulars it's pretty good, it's the Guest's that can't see-feel the rhythm of the lane that are usually the cause of disasters.

    Adult Swim Club tonight. 1700m

    200m Plus Dryland for warmup.
25m - jump out and do a 15 sec plank
    25m - Crunchs
    25m - Superman Plank :# etc
The lane I was in had a Starting Platform in the deep end ( Rope Swing tied off to Platform ) so it was a challenge to get out without smacking a shoulder into the platform. By the time I was done the 200 my arms/shoulder were not happy.

    3 x ( 15sRI )
50m Kick - My kick is still bad
    50m Shark Brd
    50m Pull
    100m Free

200m Free Distance per Stroke. = Long Glide between strokes

    75m Breast
75m Backstroke ( to change up the motion and give the muscles a rest/change )

200m Paddles - Now my arms are really wupped.

    4 x 25m IM Sprints ( 10sRI )

    100m Cool down choice
    Dry Land Stretch's

Every swim is an adventure, some more than others. Pick one item as a positive and carry it.
I was safety boat in one of our triathlon open water training swims last summer I noticed that most of the swimmers went to single side breathing, the wind chop caused face slapping waves on the one shoulder. Solution quit breathing on that side.
On another swim the angle of the sun caused a horrible reflection on the water causing me to lose my sight line on that side, solution - breathing on the other shoulder and a new reference point for tracking my line.
