scroll up to see where the emoticons originated.

but whatever, enough with the unnecessary, manufactured drama - no one cares - back to the topic:

manufactured drama? i thought it was playful ribbing. i will be more sensitive. i thought you were one of the tougher skinned ones here, didnt realise you were one of the ones scared of meanies on the internet.

    Good luck in your race!

I was forced to take 6 months off from my hard-core training and am just getting back to serious business!!! I have a lot of work to do and NEED some motivation - if any of you hard core down and dirty work out junkies have room on your friends list - I could use the motivation. After time away from MFP many of my friends list have died off :o(

I am aiming for the Tough Mudder in Maine in August, the Mudderlla in MA in Sept and the Spartan Sprint at Fenway Park in Nov!!

Glad to be part of this group and hope to gain some great focus....

I'm late to this post . . . It's so encouraging to see so many people so passionate about these races and connecting in one way or another. I've met so many people before, during and after these races and each has a story behind their commitment to the race.

09.13.14 Spartan Beast, Vail Lake, CA (My first Trifecta!)
10.25.14 Tough Mudder, Vail Lake, CA

Stay safe and keep enjoying life's moments!

The Invitational had pros and cons. I didn't end up running it, but volunteered instead. They did have the volunteers walk the course to know it though. Fast-paced, 30 obstacles, 1.5 miles. If you don't like running, but prefer the obstacles, this is the type of event for you. I do think we'll start seeing flat, obstacle-heavy speed courses in the future. They're billing this as Olympic-length.

Everyone had a level playing field. There were no elite heats, and burpee penalties were strictly enforced for everyone who entered.

Cons, it was a marketing event. Only 800 people were sold spots, and they had more than 200 Reebok execs run the race at the same time. (Execs were exempt from burpees!). Execs took the race swag like everyone else, leaving several hundred people short. And at $150 per entry, the swag played heavily into decisions to run. There was like $80+ worth of stuff in there.

I do think they are going to start working these Olympic-length distances into their regular schedules. Maybe they can capitalize on what Extreme Nation tried and failed to do. It definitely will be a lot easier to find suitable locations. No hills necessary, just a spot big enough to wind a 1.5 mile course. Most parks would fit the bill. I just hope they don't phase out more of the longer distances.

Yeah, they are calling the distance Olympic-length. With the volume of obstacles, the distance was still no joke. I think average course time was pushing a full hour, and then some. Not sure if you're familiar with any of the Spartan Pro Team, but even Junyong Pak was out for over 17 minutes on the course, a freaking beast, and practically inhuman, and he finished SMOKED, laying on the ground. Last year he finished the 3.75 mile Sprint in Amesbury in something like 25 minutes, and that had some ridiculous hills. So the obstacles really do push the distance to seem longer.

I don't recall seeing any obstacles I haven't seen in Spartan Race before.

This is my team, and one of the member's reviews: http://www.nespahtens.com/featured-review-reebok-spartan-race-invitational-42814/

And a video that shows a lot of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXR85IpEUW8&feature=youtu.be A bunch of my friends were in it, and you can catch a glimpse of me at the finish line :)

And Joe Desena was just out there the whole time, talking to people, getting feedback, and being very friendly.

I so badly want to do a mud run some day, but I'm still working on my 5K. Have a Firecracker 5K in July, and just signed myself up with two of my kids to do a 2K walk/run in support of a friend who has cancer (I think it's in a couple weeks). I LOVE that my kids (all under 7) are so excited to get into running races. They'll be doing the junior firecracker race in July too and can't wait :)

Still searching for more, as I'm new to these runs. I ran in one last weekend, Dirty Girl. Was super easy...not a challenge at all. Time to step it up. Here is what I have coming up for sure so far:

    Rugged Maniac - 5k Mud/Obstacle Race - Petersburg, VA on 5/3

Tough Mudder - Richmond, VA - June 14th

Stampede - Done & Dusted now. Was good fun although not overly challenging (except for the 6km of twisted ankle *sigh* )

True Grit next. High hopes for this as it is a qualifying race for the world OCR championships.

I'm still sad there are no more Gladiators at the Spartan Races. Who doesn't want to smash into hot, shirtless, sweaty guys? ;) in all seriousness though, I know they had to do it from a liability point of view. They were saying officially that it was due to the push for the Olyimpics, but I know for a fact (insider info) that the insurance company game them an ultimatum, which is why they were scrapped overnight. I really think they should still have gladiators in the festival area though.

Does this gladiator race you're talking about have spartan-like gladiators that get to hit you still?
