Nice day. Temps mid 80s F. Finished day's list by 2:30 pm including one odd job. Pulled two ancient creeping junipers. Nasty things they are.

Morning started out a little drippy but that didn't slow us down at all. Turned into another nice day, just a bit warmer than Monday. No problems finishing day's mows plus one odd job.

A little late in the season for shrub trimming but these were three foot above the house eaves and wildly overgrown out of their beds. Now they are two foot below the eaves and tamed back into their beds.

Week's mow list finished plus a couple of new client light shrub trims.

Started morning reorganizing my three bay machine shed, one bay of which I'd like to make my smithy. I moved our pop-up camper (2008 Fleetwood/Coleman Santa Fe) to the shop (I'm a co-owner of the building so why not) to free up the bay and now having to recollect all the aluminum cans that a packrat had scattered everywhere (hazards of country living, I guess).

While I did that, my son put his Chevy Colorado's steering column back together. Issue with jiggling key appears to be resolved.

Next headed to shop to meet bossman and finished stripping down the 4.3L V6 block for his boat. Block, crank, cam, and heads ready to go to the local machine shop for evaluation.

Last task on the todo list was to replace broken pump drive belt on other crew's walk-behind 48. We fought that SOB for hours trying to get the new belt on. I KNOW we've done it before in the field with no tools... but not today. Gave up around 6pm and popped the tops on a six-pack. Just downloaded the official step-by-step procedure to install that new belt. [sigh]

    Rest day... right.

Jumped back into reorganizing my machine shed. Found a nice big vice I didn't remember having that will work great in the smithy. Main task was gathering up all the scattered aluminum cans and crushing any that escaped the one can crusher in the house. Bought and mounted a second can crusher in the shed. This one has a six can magazine but still only crushes one at a time. Faster when you have a bunch to do. End result... seven 50lb dog food bags full of crushed soda cans waiting to be melted into something useful.

Got the pump drive belt installed on the 48 walk-behind. Simply had to loosen the idler pulley arm pivot bolt to get the clearance to slide the belt between the top of the pulley and the bottom of the engine deck.

Rained a bunch Sat and Sun. My Mom's gauge had 4.5" in it. Temps are unseasonably cool for early August so grass will be growing like mad. Smells like money. ;)

Took a day off from work. Had an appointment with my pediatrist and then, since i was off and in town, a bunch of running around.

Had surgery on my right big toe 9 years ago for acute pain from bone spurs. Left me with a chronic ache. At the end of last year's leaf season and earlier this Spring, felt like I had a bone bruise in the center of the ball of that same foot. Add to that pain, I was getting blood blisters under a pinch calluse on the pinky toe (which curles under the fourth toe slightly) of the same foot. Long story short... bone spurs are back. yippy. Going to try meds to control discomfort as there are no good option for toe joint replacements and I'm pretty sure I don't want him the fuse the joint up in a permanent 45 degree angle... yet. (Just how does that work in a heavy steel-toed work boot?)

Hit a few steel yard looking for a 100 lb block of steel to use as an anvil and found a perfect peice 4x8x16, 145 lbs @ $2.75/lb... or $400. Umh, no. Not ready to drop that coin yet. I did pick up two pieces of 12x12 I-beam, 20" and 30", 72 lb/ft, 300 lbs, @ $0.38/lb, call it $115. Can use the 20 as is initially and then figure something more useful later. (I got ideas ;) ).

Did end up at the shop and got a few items off the maintenance list, nothing big. Mainly to pick up a junk rotor off the bossman's F150 as he had brakes done Sunday yesterday by another employee. This will make a good fire pan for my blacksmith forge. Now all I need are some 2" black pipe fittings and a platform to mount it in.

Rained out after four yards. Tried to wait it out with a second breakfast but rain just kept coming. We are above normal rainfall by 12.5 inches now for the year... and raining again while I write this.

Home by 10:30am. Rotated my son's tires in prep for him leaving for college this weekend. Then started moving a 220 circuit in the basement that has been idle for 20 some years. Figured I could use it to power up my dad's old stick welder that has been gathering cobwebs for at least ten years. Didn't finish the job as I couldn't find my impact drill to sink a couple of concrete screws to mount the plug box in its new home. Couldn't find the screws either so took that as a sign to relax the rest of the day.

Spent a little time guesstimating the cost of running power out to my machine shed/smithy. Hit $500 and put the pencil down. (sigh) Maybe in a few years after both kids are out of the house for good.

4 hr rain delay. Started mowing after lunch. Back at shop at 7:15 pm shy 4 lawns of finishing day's list.

Found a Millermatic 250 MIG welder on craigs list that I wanted to look at but way too late for that by the end of this day. Oh well, its either still there or I didn't need it that badly.

Pretty late in the season for a 12 hr work day but that is what we had.

Picked up the four yards left over from Monday and then got tossed one of our school campuses, off schedule, for a back to school meet and great lunch. Got it done just as the teachers started showing up at noon.

Then we got to START Tuesday's list. Back at shop at 7:30 pm, but caught up on mowings.

    Boo-yah!

Pop up storms threatening all day. Mostly we just got sprinkled on but other crew got drowned.

Finished all but two yards. One had a tree service raising canopies, The last yard of the day got a 15 minute soaking just before we arrived. Since it has a good slope on the yard, was the last yard, we have to come back for that yard with the newly trimmed trees, and we are basically in good shape overall; I decided to call it a day. We'll pick up these two on Thursday.

Picked up the two yards we bypassed yesterday... and four more from the other crew's Thursday's list... and one more add on just for good measure. That's seven mows for the day added to our normal Thursday's list. And we still came close to finishing the day's list. Had to push one school campus and a neighborhood of duplexes off to Friday.

Forgot to mention Monday that we lost the two college kids we had over the Summer. What a great program. Gives these kids a taste of real life. Talk about incentive to stay in school! :D

Day off. Went and looked at a Millermatic 251 MIG welder about an hour drive away. Uhmm, no thanks. Never been used, maybe. Gun missing nozzle, bunch of new nozzles but none fit, no wire, no regulator, two bottles of gas (one argon, one 75% argon/25% CO2, both supposedly full), and pull handle cracked. No way to see it working. Again, no thanks.

I think its too big for our needs at the shop anyway. Now looking at buying a new Miller Multimatic 215. MIG, TIG, and stick combination.

After lunch managed to mow my own lawn. Still need to string trim it, and maybe double cut it since it had pretty much gotten away from me... but that'll be a job for another day.

Wife baked chocolate chip cookies. Left me some dough in the frig. Explains my red deficit. And my Average Daily Deficit is lying. Says I should have dropped 0.8 lbs this week. Trend says I only dropped 0.1lb. :/

    Rest day.

Fired up melt foundry first thing this morning. went through the better part of a 50 lb dog food bag full of crushed soda cans resulting in eleven muffin sized aluminum ingots. Total run time was 90 minutes.

Ran up and mowed the shop then fired up our new oxy-actylene cutting torch. My first cutting project... two ~15" pieces of 3.5" pipe (1/8" walls) to form a 'T'. After cutting a hole in the middle of one and a saddle on the end of the other, welded them together. Not half bad. Learned a bunch... like next time cut the saddle first, then the hole. This piece will be used to transfer air from a blower to the bottom of a brake rotor blacksmith's forge.

Back home, picked out a large round from the wood pile and started forming a base for an anvil... or in my case an anvil shaped object. A 12x12 I-beam about 20 inches long. I'll trim 3 inches off either side of the top giving me a 6x20 inch work area. I'll cut in a hardy hole and a pritchel hole on one end and then thinking about welding on a front wheel drive axle spindle for a horn on the other end.

Eclipse... 96% totality. Was expecting it to get too dark to work for fifteen or twenty minutes. Nope. Got hard to see in the shadows while wearing my normal sun/safety glasses, but was able to work through it. Did bring along appropiate welding helments to look at the progression between yards.

Otherwise, tough day. My third man was sent with the other crew as traffic due to the eclipse was predicted to be heavy in town (it wasn't) so that slowed us down. Enough rain over the last two week that grass is growing like it was Spring and that slowed us down. Bossman called us in at 5pm with three yards still on the list. We'll pickup those three tomorrow.

Turned into a feeding frenzy when I got home. :/

Thanks for the words PSG. Always good to hear.

Four hour rain delay... in August! Oh well, Gave me and bossman time to run into town and pick up that new Miller Multimatic 215 MIG, TIG, and stick welder combo. But not enough time to unbox it and play. Guess that will have to wait for the weekend.

Mowing started right after noon. Was afraid everyting would be too wet to mow but we only bypassed three yards as too wet to put mowers on. Finished day nine yards short of finishing day's list. Not bad considering late start, picking up three leftovers from Monday, and the unseasonably Springlike condition of the yards.

Next ten days look like unseasonably cool with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s and no rain. Should be easy to finish the week's mowing list by Friday.

We'll lose a guy starting next week. Been with us for 18 months now. Was hoping he'd stick to be a crew foreman next year, allowing me more time to stay in the shop and maintain the eqipment (sigh) but that is the nature of the business. Very high turnover rate.

Making a change to my calorie adjustment (increasing to 300) today (Sun 8/27) so this data (Sat 8/26) is the last day still using the previous 100 calorie adjustment.

Started the day working on my anvil stump. Peeled the bark, squared up the base and then dished out its center. Not sure if this is really needed as the shed it's going to live in has a dirt and gravel floor. But you never know, I may pour a concrete floor in there someday.

Bossman interrupted my play to run into town and pick up our SCUBA gear. We had dropped them off several weeks back for servicing, anticipating a Caribbean dive trip this winter. I still need to replace my old dive computer and mask but they had sold their last computer that I was interested in just last weekend. No rush, we still have a few months to familiarize ourselves with new equipment.

Stopped at a couple of local hardware stores to pick up a plug and receptacle to make a 220V adaptor for the new MIG welder. The MIG uses a NEMA 6-50P which doesn't fit into the shop's NEMA 10-50R.

Back home I squared off the top of the stump and gave the whole thing a quick 80 grit belt sanding. I still need to seal the end grain (old timer recipe that works on wood, leather and metal; 2 part beeswax, 2 part turpentine, 1 part boiled linseed oil) then, after it's completely dry, add steel bands around both ends.

Nice easy morning. Then ran out to the shop to mow and then played with new Miller 215 welder.

Had to change out two idler pulleys on the mower deck and bend out an inner baffle that had gotten knocked hard enough that a blade was ticking on it. Did the trick. Mowed like a champ.

That Miller Multimatic 215 is a nice welder! Had so much fun with it beefing up my aging mowing trailer that I forgot to eat lunch. If I hadn't run out of 2" angle iron stock and actylene for the cutting torch, I might still be out there. Only down side is I can no longer blame the welder for my crappy welds. :D
