Almost caught up. Two school campuses and then on to shrub trimming with more shrub trimming on the schedule for tomorrow... weather permitting, of course. Scattered showers forecasted both today and tomorrow.

    Surprise! No rain at all!

Beautiful day. Weekly mows done by lunch. Shrub trimming after lunch. Fell in bed and slept like the dead.

Shrub trimming all day. Without a doubt, this is my least favorite aspect of lawn maintenance.

40% chance of scattered showers today and then no precipitation on the horizon for all of next week. Maybe we can stick a fork in this Spring shrub trimming by the end of the week. [fingers crossed]

    On task for today.
    1. Heat up forge and try to clean crucible of solid lump of dross we left in it last weekend.
    2. If we get crucible clean, try out new dross skimmer (hoping to make while dross is heating).
    3. Run to shop after lunch and remount the rear caster wheel on my bagger which fell off yesterday on the last shrub trimming yard. (Looks like a pin sheared off that held the axle shaft in place. Probably replace it with a large, long bolt and nut and then drill through the nut for a cotter pin lock similar to what is on the other rear caster, or maybe do it right (what???) and use a castle nut on both sides.)
    4. Sharpen all our shrub trimmers.
    5. Mow my own yard, if son hasn't done so by time I get back home.

Check off 1-4 on Task List. Salvaged 4 1/2 ingots of aluminum out of the slag we made last weekend and dross skimmer worked great (stainless steel spaghetti serving fork wired onto 4ft of 1/2 rebar). Even fixed the 72 after boss-man thought he blew the right side drive pump. Issue wasn't pump per se, but the control arm slipping on the input shaft. Tightened control arm clamp and... shebang! She works just fine.

Got home from shop and yard not mowed so jumped on mower and was almost done with front yard when rain let loose. [sigh]

Fired forge up again (after son got home with an interested friend) setting up on concrete garage apron under overhanging porch to stay out of rain using propane since we were so close to house. Ran for over an hour and everything working great until molten aluminum started showing up under forge drain. Turns out the thin walled stainless steel kitchen canister we were using for a crucible erodes/corrodes more in a propane flame than in a diesel flame.

New item on Task List. Get/make a new crucible.

Rest day. Boss-man said we were caught up enough and could easily finish up shrub trimming next week.

Puttered around the shop. Put replacement head on a straight bar edger. Put new deck drive belt on 72 with its new tensioning spring. (What? That's the way it is suppose to go? Really?). Tried to replace leaking oil drain valve on 48, but will have to remove engine mount bolts and raise engine about an inch off the frame to get enough clearance to spin old drain valve off and new drain valve on, all while tipping mower over on its side past 45 degrees (to keep oil from pouring out of open drain)... or wait for next oil change and the lift engine while on the level... I'll think about it another week. Maybe then I'll give the side tip another try as I'm getting tired of the growing oil puddle on the deck of my trailer.

Took my bride to see "Wonder Woman" as part of our wedding anniversary (6/2, 27 years). Managed to stay away from all the junk food and the movie wasn't bad at all.

    Rest day.

Put finishing touches on our pressurized waste oil reservoir (converted propane tank) but will take more time than I had to play around with it to get a decent heat for the melt forge.

Bought another stainless steel kitchen canister and set it up as a new crucible for the forge.
    uzfimchh37nh.jpg
But about an hour into another soda can melt (using diesel for heat), the crucible failed again even though this one never felt the lick of a propane flame.

Post inspection of crucible shows we probably punctured the thin (red hot) walls of the crucible with the prongs on the spaghetti spoon (mounted on rebar) we were using as a dross skimmer.
    ixrsa5ocwqb6.jpg
    Good to know.

Will probably set up one more kitchen canister (left from a set of four) while looking for a thicker wall crucible. 4 to 6" scrap pipe with 1/4" walls maybe.

Two shrub trimmings at beginning of daily run. This put whole day about 3 1/2 hours behind. Not sure what boss-man was thinking. SOP is to finish mows and then pickup shrub trimming.

Anyway, did not finish day's mows. Boss-man called about 4:30 and had us wrap it up, six yards short.

Heat Index in the mid 90s (F). Guess boss-man was wanting to get shrubs in during cool of the day and break us in slowly to increasing heat.

Working Saturday- odd jobs. Tree work. Trim up low hanging branches, remove large storm downed limbs, remove large junk tree (mulberry), and remove apple tree uprooted by storm (yesterday's stump).

Still have to do a final cleanup Monday of hundreds of little green apples that dropped off tree during the removal, and trim a couple of shrubs that were covered by the downed canopy.

That apple tree was not easy. The original tree had died decades ago and owner allowed four suckers to sprout off the old stump and grow into a knotted mess of trunks and limbs. Suckers were 6 to 8 inches in diameter at base and 20 foot tall. Limbing this monster was like opening a Chinese puzzle box.

After we unloaded the very full trailer and truck, I also mowed the 4 acres of the shop with the 72. New belt and tensioning spring are holding up OK.

First triple digit Heat Index warning of season. Forgot to look to see if we hit 100F but I did soak my shirt and my pants to the thighs in sweat.

Rest and refeed... OK, gorged on Father's Day goodies.

Did rewire the master bath light switch. Was hearing an occasional sizzle when main light was on, accompanied with flicker from lights, from the custom switch that came with the light/heat/vent unit installed 25 plus years ago. I've replaced the cheap rocker switches before but decided to toss the whole bloody thing. Pulled the single box out and installed a double box with two standard double switches (main light, nightlight, heater, vent). No more sizzle.

Not bad for a Monday. Little bit cooler, little bit drier.

Finished day's list with no issues, including final cleanup on that apple tree. Boss-man texted everybody that since we finished early, why not head over to a large client and string trim his very large and very rough hill (a thing we do once or twice a year) and three very large forsythias that have not been trimmed in... well, forever... behind the tennis court. Seven guys, four string trimmers, two shrub trimmers, a rake, and forty minutes later... job done.

Bad things come in threes. 1) Front left wheel on 48, weld between steel rim and hub failed and wheel woobling badly. Too much wooble to use on high profile lawns. 2) Strange squeeking chirp coming from truck while moving slowly (<20 mph). Seems to be in drivetrain somewhere. Still not sure exactly where but currently thinking seal on back of transmission or front u-joint on driveshaft.3) While looking for noise saw that dump rack welds on truck's dump bed have broken free at rear which puts entire weight of load on rear dump picot pins all the time.

Finished mows using 60 rider, other crew's 36 walk-behind, and 30 push mowers.

Spot welded that wheel rim back onto the 48's hub. Got most of wobble out. Just a stop gap until new wheel comes in. Just about 80% convinced squeak/chirp is coming from front u-joint, even though I get no play in the joint.

Finished day's mows in good shape.

Big blow came through at noon just as we finished the last mow of the week. We had some odd jobs to do after lunch but called it a day as the storm unleashed.

Scary drive home. South bound in center lane of six lane divide highway with concrete center barrier and sideways rain in 40 - 50 mph crosswinds when a white SUV 20 to 30 yards ahead starts fishtailing. The SUV does a couple of 360s and then slams into the center barrier hard on the passenger quarter panel. (By now I've moved over to the far right lane and half onto the shoulder.) The SUV bounces off the barrier (as I'm staring into its headlight) still spinning until it finally straightens out, facing south bound again... right next to me! The SUV, now more or less under control, continues to slow and drifts back over to the center barrier and stops (now in my rear view mirror). My rig is too big to pull over on the center shoulder so I have no choice but to plow on through the deluge.

So much rain and wind, I swear the water on the road was white capping.

(I might have stress eaten a little bit... like a whole package of gummy bears (800 calories).

Odd jobs. Start time of 9am 'cause it is Satuday after all. Cleaned up two and a half medium size storm downed Bradford Pears at one client. Two guys, one chainsaw, one truck (two loads), three man hours. After unloading the debris on the burn pile, put match to it. While pile burned, started coolant flush on cabover, While fushing cabover, dropped driveshaft out of my work truck... yup, bad front u-joint. Replaced rear seal on transfer case while driveshaft was out. Knocked out and replace front and rear u-joint. Re-installed driveshaft and greased new u-joints. Drained cabover after flush and replaced lower radiator hose and refilled coolant. Pile burned down nicely so called it a day. 8 hours 30 minutes.

The son and I fired up the melt forge again. First 30 minutes on diesel and then switched over to waste oil. Worked great!

We ran almost two hours and were almost done with the melt when I poked a hole in the side of our last crucible (stainless steel kitchen canister) with the spaghetti spoon dross skimmer, even being as gentle with it as I knew how.

OK, Three times is enough. No more melts until we come up with a more durable crucible.

Odd jobs. Dropped 18 bags of fert, one school campus to finish week's mow list, and three shrub trims.

Two day weekend off... except for mowing the shop, changing out the leaking oil drain on my 48, grease a dry bearing on their 36, weld diagonal braces on the left rear rail of my trailer, and paint the rear gates on the white Isuzu. (My son should get my yard mowed and string trimmed, so that one is not on my to-do list.)
