what ya got? what ya got?? We just showed 56 Obama - 40 Romney

I keep thinking of Jenbit when they mention Florida - hey Jen, have you voted yet?? Hurry up, and dont keep us waiting for days!!!

    Now I have Obama 64 Romney 82.

I am also freaking out about Minnesota's "defining marriage" amendment. I haven't seen any projections yet and I'm so nervous.

It's true, I don't think I can make a difference, so I don't care anymore. And I sure don't bother to vote. I've given up. Although I admit I'm following it all with morbid fascination. Especially the possibility of voting machine shenanigans. Reminds me of 2000 and 2004.

 :brokenheart: this makes me a little sad.

as for voting for a non dem or repub, unfortunately it's a catch 22 . i think part of the reason there are no viable 3rd or 4th party candidates is because they are usually depicted as being so completely on the fringe or so ignorant of bigger picture issues beyond their specialized interests that most people wouldnt want to vote for them. i think at the moment the biggest party that would be able to move more mainstream are the libertarians, but they have a long way to go before i'd ever vote for them

They're not visible because they don't have the corporate funding of the two main parties nor are they permitted to participate in debates.

but the catch 22 is that all of that is based on public interest.. well at least the debates.. the corp funding you have a point

how does it work in other countries like the UK? who pays for their campaigns?

I voted for the first time today! So, there's that.

I just can wait for this whole thing to be over and done with. The way people are tearing each other apart is KILLING me.

The one thing that I'm REALLY watching and waiting for is Michigan's 6th proposal. I really hope people did their research on that one... Ugh.

As far as I know, private money funds at least part of the election process in every country. Now I'm going to have to go see if I can find a country where private money is completely banned.

    Edit: Found one, sort of.

There are four main sources of funding for Swedish political parties: direct public funding, indirect public funding, income from party membership, and lotteries conducted by parties or their affiliated organizations. The main source is direct public funding given to political parties during election periods and between elections, with the amount based on performance in the previous election and current representation in the legislature. Indirect party funding is typically provided through the party-affiliated press, which is publicly subsidized. Although membership in political parties has declined, income from membership still remains important, representing between 5-10 percent of the total budget of the two main parties in the early 1990s. Some political parties or their affiliated organizations receive income from lotteries; the Social Democrats are particularly successful in this respect. Although no law prohibits political parties from receiving funds from private businesses, party leaders agreed in the 1970s to refuse such contributions.

The one thing that I'm REALLY watching and waiting for is Michigan's 6th proposal. I really hope people did their research on that one... Ugh.

    What is the 6th proposal?

On the surface it's just saying that the people of Michigan should have the right to vote on whether or not a new international bridge/tunnel can be built at our expense.

    Sounds good, right? Nahhh.

The only reason it's on the ballot is because the guy who owns the ambassador bridge doesn't want this one being built. He started out saying.. "We don't need another bridge!" Then it was discovered that he had already started building his own bridge before... So he was full of ****. Then he changed his argument to, "It's going to cost taxpayer's so much money! We'll lose teachers and policemen!' Uhmmmm. No. Canada is covering most of it, and the rest is coming out of tolls.

So it's a self-interest proposal because one (already very rich) man wants alllllll the revenue, and completely unnecessary. They just made it look like the people of Michigan get to call the shots...

What's that marriage proposal/whatever you were talking about?

    Aww,second the congratulations!
I loved voting for the first time- the old lady running the line announced it to everyone and they all cheered for me. Voted 3rd party for a socialist (a woman) back then because of youthful idealism : )
