Oh BTW I happen to know for a fact that I am the product of this. My parents had been married for 6 months maybe when my mom decided she wanted a baby. So she started flushing her BC and not telling my dad.It ended my dads very promising Jazz career too. He never made me feel bad about it but as a child it bothered me. Oh and how did I know? It is a family story that has been told for as long as I can remember

All are over 30. A good friend was 28 at the time and it took them 16 months.

I do find this topic interesting, but don't have much to add except that I find it sad that some people feel the need to be so deceitful.

But is raises another question. I know we are all in different life stages (and I assume that will lead to lots of differing answers) but ladies and gentlemen, do you have a thought out plan should there be an honest accident (assuming you're not trying to conceive)?

Yeah, I always wear a condom no matter what. Of course I have actually always taken that a step further and the only women I have had sex with were also on something (pill or whatever) to prevent pregnancy.

That way just in case something happened with the condom, there will hopefully be another line of defense.

While I think it would be fun to be a father, I honestly don't want any child to have my genes. I would rather not pass on my gene pool and all the wonderful health issues that could possibly come with it. Of course, this is why I have recently started taking more of an interest in single moms. They already have a healthy child and are more apt to not want another (this is a generalization).

    I'm a single mom, lol.

    How you doin'?

I have learned though to learn exactly what the status of the father and previous relationship is. Dated a single mom and loved her kid, but after about 6 months she decided she wanted to work it out with the kid's father for the kids sake, and dropped me flat on my face. Live and learn.

Currently it is women who have enforcement and veto rights over termination, not men. Which, I agree with you here, shouldn't be the case since apparently some women are being irresponsible about it.
:noway: WHERE exactly did I say that women should not have the right to choose whether or not to keep or terminate a pregnancy?!?!? I think you've misunderstood me.
Well... It could absolutely be me misunderstanding you ( ), but I understood you said men shouldn't have both rights of enforcement and veto rights over termination, when you said:
(or rather, I hope I've misunderstood, as it sounds like you're saying men should have both enforcement and veto rights over terminations?!)

I'm simply saying that I don't particularly trust women more than I trust men (especially since some women have shown to be not so responsible about it according to the article), so I don't think women should have enforcement and veto rights over terminations either.

Even though you technically didn't extend your thoughts to both genders, in principle I agree with you that men (but also women, and that's my addition) should not have enforcement and veto rights.
So I think women alone shouldn't have this right.

Ah, reading back I can sort of see how you misunderstood me - I could have been clearer in my turn of phrase. To be absolutely clear, while I do think the moral aspect is tricky, and the rights/obligations of fathers are often treated too cavalierly, at the end of the day, it is a woman who carries and bears the child, a woman whose body and life are forever inescapably altered by that, and, in the end, I believe women must have the right of self-determination over their bodies. A good argument against having sex without taking personal responsibility for birth control, I guess, if you're a man who adamantly does or does not want children.
But is raises another question. I know we are all in different life stages (and I assume that will lead to lots of differing answers) but ladies and gentlemen, do you have a thought out plan should there be an honest accident (assuming you're not trying to conceive)?

Where I am at the moment leaves me very few options. Assuming my circumstances were identical to those I find myself in today ie. the pregnancy was not the result of an established relationship that had an 'oops' moment, and there was no reasonable expectation that the father and I would pool our energy and resources to raise the child, I'd have to terminate the pregnancy, as much as I'd hate to do so, and as much as I do want children. That said, if pregnancy was a possibility, minus three wise men, a choir of angels and a very large, out-of-place star, I'd be taking every possible step to make sure I didn't become pregnant right this moment. If circumstances were different, then there'd be a long discussion to be had with the father before any decisions were made.

This is sick and very dishonest for a woman to do, how can you trust someone by word. I have a friend that got an opsy pregnancy (turns out she planned it) because she missed taking her BC and now her husband actually have the alarm set and watches her take the pill and checks her mouth to make sure she swallowed it. WTF? I never ever have unprotected sex and I always carry condoms and take my BC, I don't understand why women could be so careless by having unprotected sex. Apart from an unplanned pregnancy people there are STDs.

That is just ridiculous...what is she a baby who needs supervision? I would've dumped him before I let him control me like that.

Is it bad that I'm more scared of catching an STD than knocking a girl up?? Call it more motivation to wrap it up I suppose.

Funny that the group rarely addresses this issue... I wonder if certain age groups are more or less concerned about this than others? I say that because of my age, I hit my teenage years in the 80s and the fear of HIV was huge at the time...obviously it had a lasting impression on my psyche. But those younger than I am don't seem to give it much attention (unless I'm missing something?).

I know, I would have too...but I can understand where he is coming from. She wants three more kids and they cannot afford it, but she will go off the pill just to have them and he wants to make sure she will not.

@ pa_jorg - INTERESTING! You are right.. this group very rarely addresses pregnancy and STI/STD issues. Possibly because they aren't the fun and sexy parts of single life and no one wants to admit here to being any less than perfectly responsible, adult and cautious?

I am surprised actually at the amount of men and women in this thread so far who profess to always use condoms, even in long term relationships, and that no one but castadiva has admitted she wouldn't necessarily have a child at this time in her life.

So it is Tuesday.. and in the spirit of TMI - I have been both very cautious and less so at different times in my life in regards to both STD and pregnancy issues. I have been lucky, I suppose..though I like to think I take educated and informed risks. I dislike condoms in long term relationships. I haven't met a man yet who actually likes them either. Having said that, my partners and I have purposely gotten tested prior, and I am not overly worried about getting pregnant, due to some potential fertility concerns. Though I take steps to avoid it obviously, if I were to become pregnant, I've always been pro-choice.

I will say though now, for the first time ever, I have met someone that I could possibly see having a child with, should it happen. And that might just be the scariest thing of all.

I've wondered if there's a generational divide on this, too. When I was a teenager, I took a field trip to the county health clinic with my first boyfriend before I let it get anywhere close. Disease and pregnancy- both terrifying.

The older kids that I work with constantly reference birth control and who is and isn't pregnant, but I never hear a word about condoms in the 4 years I've been here. They haven't gotten any kind of sex ed though. Those blown up images of gonorrhea in the 7th grade might have scarred me for the good.

In situations like this, where the guy clearly doesn't want the child and was somewhat tricked into having one, he should not have to pay child support. I find it disgusting in situation like this, the women goes after the guy for child support.

If the man doesn't want to have the child, he shouldn't have to pay for it.

It just seems that the guy really has no say in the situation. He gets tricked, doesn't want the child, and is forced to pay for 18 years. It's horrific in my opinion.

I'm not even sexually active but I am fearful of STDs, probably because of learning about it in school. When I become sexually active, I will definitely be using condoms for a while until I know we are deeply committed.

But you chose to have sex with her. You could have refrained from sexual activity. You know that pregnancy can be a consequence of sex. To me, that arguement is like saying "well, I went out drinking and I got a ticket for drunk driving. It's not my fault, it's the the bars fault for overserving me." It's BOTH your fault and the bars fault, no one person can be blamed.

And it is awfully hard to prove in court that she intentionally got pregnant and you didn't want a child. You chose to engage in the act of procreation.

A couple of distinct issues in Pa_Jorg's & Jules' posts. One could not nearly formulate a really good response without taking up chapters in a book (or perhaps an entire book).

First off, there are many STD's (or STI's). Some have more devastating consequences than others.

Historically, Pa_Jorg is correct. The fear of HIV was quite a huge deal in the 80s/first half of the 90s. I don't think the fear is there as much anymore. HIV/AIDS is more treatable now with the drug advances that have come up since the mid 1990s, but it is still a disease that should be feared. I do think that Generation Y (generally considered birth years 1980-1994) has a fear of it, but I think that it was more fearful for Generation X (1965-1979 approximately) as it was newer as Gen X was coming of age.

Comprehensive sexual education has been around since the 1970s/1980s in most places. STD's & pregnancies are usually covered in big detail.

It is a matter of applying the lessons of safe sex. Is it done?

 Applauds madly! Yup. Or a man could take personal responsibility, which I seem to recall you being rather keen on in other matters, Mike, and wear a condom to reduce his exposure to the risk of pregnancy. It takes two to tango. If the risk is unacceptable, either don't partake, or take steps to protect yourself.

Men also do have the option of a vasectomy if they really do not want kids. Unlike a hysterectomy they can be reversed.

I concur. I'm sick of the "woe is me, I don't get to force a woman to have an abortion" bullsh*t. It makes me ill to think that there are people who would actually force someone to bear a child or not bear a child because of some ridiculous notion about what is fair or not fair. Here's how it works, chaps. You don't want a lady to get preggers then do what you can to make sure it doesn't happen. Understand that when you stick your d*ck in a vagina, it's a possibility, however minute, that a baby could pop outta there 9 months later. If you don't want a kid don't have sex, get a vasectomy, or stick to anal and shut it with the attitude that you should have a deciding factor over another persons body.

Yeah, it's horrible when women trick men into having babies, but I find it really hard to sympathize with a guy who is shocked that sex leads to babies.

I don't think the people who constitute this group are a population who have a huge statistical risk with AIDS (how many homosexuals/drug addicts do we have here? probably few). As for the other STDs I have heard of, my understanding was that they rarely left permanent problems if treated early enough.
However, I definitely see condoms as a way to prevent STDs as well (which is the other reason why I am using them as well).

I'm serious... Check the numbers and the relative risk by sexual orientation, ethnicity, etc.

However in many developed countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and most of Western Europe, more HIV infections are transmitted by men having sex with men than by any other transmission route. In the United States, "men who have had sex with men since 1977 have an HIV prevalence (the total number of cases of a disease that are present in a population at a specific point in time) 60 times higher than the general population".
    Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Men_who_have_sex_with_men

The risk of transmission from anal intercourse is especially high, estimated as 1.4–1.7% per act in heterosexual as well as homosexual contacts.

Absolutely! Especially in the case we're talking about, where the guy is purposely mislead and lied to. It just seems like a crappy deal that the guy would have to pay child support in this case.

Believe me, I don't have a "woe is me" attitude as this hasn't even happened to me. I guess this is why I have ZERO sympathy for single mothers as well. It was their choice to have sex in the first place.
I would say it was more their choice to have children, since they have termination options. But men can't control that, so then it falls onto their choice to engage in intercourse.
Good point Mike. I think if it is their choice and they make that choice to have the child, then it follows they shouldn't be entitled to any form of compensation.

Absolutely! Especially in the case we're talking about, where the guy is purposely mislead and lied to. It just seems like a crappy deal that the guy would have to pay child support in this case.

    1) The man chose to engage in sex, an act that is designed for procreation. Are you really surprised pregnancy happens as a result?
    2) As I said above, how the hell do you prove it was intentional deception? It's pure he said she said. No proof. Unless you signed a contract stating something like "if you get pregnant, I'm not supporting it."
    3) You would really refuse to pay child support on your own flesh and blood, even if you disliked the baby's mother? Wow.

Besides, didn't you once say you only sleep with women you wouldn't mind having a child with?

    I agree with this:
    1) The man chose to engage in sex, an act that is designed for procreation. Are you really surprised pregnancy happens as a result?

It may sound cliche, but it takes two to tango. Pregnancy is a possibility when having sex, whether you are using some form of contraceptive or not. BOTH parties are assuming this responsibility, unless as stated above, there was some sort of agreement signed stating that one party doesn't want to be held responsible.

Not rocket science. Take responsbility for your actions.
