I can't figure out why my fasting BG varies so much; I'm so careful not to eat anything sweet at night, and I always remember to take my insulin.
Anyway, my fasting BG this morning was 91. I'm very happy about that. It's the lowest so far!
Yesterday, it was 141, and last night I had two Nutrigrain maple and brown sugar bars, much higher in sugar than the Rye Krisp and string cheese stick I had the night before. I'm so careful to watch sugars, even though I have few of the "right" foods around here. Actually, I have NONE of the right foods around here. Since my husband died, I just bought the ingredients for comfort foods and that's what I cook (e.g., full-fat cheese, whole milk, lots of butter, canned fruit with heavy syrup left over from before my husband died, full-sugar Jell-O gelatin and pudding). It's going to be a long time before this food is gone.
Help! What do I do? When I watch my sugars closely, I don't eat enough calories, and now on Day 3, I'm really tired of being hungry.0 -
Hi LJ, Some of the foods you have listed will not do you any good. I can understand your comfort eating in the light of your loss. Have you thought about looking for a bereavement support group ?. These groups can be very helpful in helping us move through the grieving process. If you have lots of food in storage one option would be to donate it to a local food bank if there was one in your area. Some diabetics have found success using a lower carb approach and you could have a look at The Lower Carber Forum - The LCD Group. The participants are very supportive and quite a few are diabetic. The LCHF approach may be one way of dealing with your problems with hunger. I wish you well and hope you at least have a look at the group I suggested.0

Thank you for your nice post, Robert. I cannot afford to get rid of these foods and replace them. Actually, I can't afford to do any grocery shopping this month at all because I have to pay for my new glasses (mine are 12 years old); it will be nice to see well again. I've been surviving on my husband's social security while I've been going through all the surgery, but I start working part-time again next month (if I can stay out of the hospital long enough) and will be able to grocery shop to my heart's content; well, not really, but I'll definitely buy some of the proper foods.
I finally got the go-ahead from my physical- and occupational therapists and home care nurse to go out and will go to a support group next Monday, although it meets only once a month. There are others I'm going to try and hopefully will find one I like. Since I'm home-bound, I need to arrange for rides a week ahead of time (I don't have a car, because I don't drive anymore). Other than doctor appointments, this will be the first time I've gotten out for my emotional health (insurance doesn't cover mental health, so the support groups have to be free). Starting about June or so, there's a six-week support group at the cancer center where my husband received treatment. I'm on the waiting list for that one. I've been trying to deal with all of this on my own and with the help of a good book, "Lost my partner-What'll I do."
Anyway, I'm going to have to eat these foods but in moderation. I know the fat and possibly sugar amounts will be over, but I have yet to meet the protein- and calorie requirements.
I'm hungry! Thanks again, Robert.

New here! What time of the day are these BG readings taken. My morning fasting BG was 286 and my reading 2 hours after lunch was 217.8. These are so high compared to everyone else. Am I doing something wrong?0

Joyce welcome to the circus!
The 'fasting' BG is usually measured first thing in the morning before you have any food, or anything to drink besides water. It can be taken at any time when it has been 8 hours since your last food. But with meals throughout the day, first thing in the morning is usually easiest.
Your numbers are high, but not outside of experience. When I was first diagnosed my fasting number was 345. So your 200 range readings wouldn't be at all unexpected for an 'uncontrolled' diabetic. But they are high if you are 'on program'. Are you on meds and watching your food intake? If so, you may want to consult your doc about adjusting your regimen.
My Fasting BGL was 100 this morning.0 -
I had a low blood sugar issue this morning; two glucose tablets took care of it. I don't know why it happened, as I was careful with what I ate yesterday (gained almost a pound, unfortunately) and had my snack before I went to bed. Thank goodness I woke up when I did. I thought I was shivering because it was chilly in my bedroom. As I was making the bed, I realized it wasn't the cold that was making me feel that way. When I checked my blood sugar, it was 61. Hypoglycemic reactions are worse for the heart than high blood sugar, so we all have to be very careful.
Tomorrow morning, I expect it to be high, as I'm going out to dinner with a friend tonight and there's nothing sugar-free, low carb on the menu (especially at the Coldstone Creamery). I'll check the menu online today so I'll know what to order and (hopefully) not waiver from my decision.

@LJFJ; good to see that have made your way to this group and you're getting into the swing of things. That's a good decision to look at the menu beforehand and choose what is good for you. Hope you have a nice evening with your friend, well done.0

101 this morning.
Yesterday, though, I had two low-blood sugar episodes about four hours apart. That really scared me, as I've been so careful with what I eat and the insulin I take. Even after the glucose tablets (two for the first episode, three for the second), I was so shaky and scared, since this has never happened to me before... NEVER! A friend dropped by and I made bacon cheeseburgers for both of us. Then I snacked on Cheetos and had a peanut butter and lettuce sandwich before I went to bed. This morning, even though I gained 1.4 pounds, my blood sugar is still good. I'm shocked! I think I'll adjust the insulin tonight. I don't want to go through that again.0 -

Thank you, Robert. We didn't go last night, as I found a fraudulent charge on my credit card so I had to order a new one. I should have it today or tomorrow. We're going to hit the Texas Roadhouse tomorrow night. I'm looking forward to those ribs (I'm determined to take half of them home).
I'm going to have to figure out what to do about avoiding the hypoglycemic episodes, though. Yesterday was scary (two episodes), and I usually hit my sugar limit each day, so I don't know what happened.

@LJFJ; sorry to hear about the hypos. Different people have their own solutions. The most effective I have found is to carry glucose tablets and chew between 4-6 when The need arises. Thankfully I've only had two episodes since diagnosis in Nov 2011. I carry a pack at all times and keep a pack in the glove compartment in my car. I also carry a tube of glycogel which is faster acting but thankfully have'nt had to use it. Hope this helps.0

GM FBS 139 today. Enjoy your weekend!0

Hi! Despite sampling my homemade cinnamon- and caramel rolls before taking them to the pot luck dinner last night, my fasting blood sugar was 80 this morning! Awesome! I think that was due to all the dough-rolling and making all those trips to the community room. I even lost weight overnight!
