I got my A1c back today and drumroll please.... its 5.4. I am over the moon! All my hard work is paying off finally. (started at 8.7 in July) I really needed this too because I've been sick and using that as an excuse to eat what I want. Between getting to go off my water pill for high blood pressure (yay) and eating out too much I'm up significantly. But it's ok. I know that I get results if I follow my plans.

Congrats! What is your method?0

I count carbs! 15g to 30g for breakfast and snacks. 45g for lunch and 60g for dinner. I've also lost over 70 lbs so that has helped too.3

Thats awesome!!!! NSV are the best sometimes0

that's great0

That's great! When I started this journey my A1C was 14 and my fasting BS was 29. I'm trying to get to 30-45 each meal period and have lost a little.
How much protein do you eat, or do you care?
1 -
I don't really pay much attention to protein at the moment. I have in the past, but I changed the macros I track to include potassium (i'm low/deficient" so protein had to go. I get pretty close to it usually. Here are my goals. I just looked at my reports and I have hit my protein in 17 of the last 30 days. So mostly I get it.
Calories 1400
Carbohydrates 123 g 35 %
Fat 70 g 45 %
Protein 70 g 20 %0 -

CONGRATS!!! Awesome A1C!!! I have lost 63.9 and have pretty close ratios to you but eat a few more carbs..will let it go to 45%. You are a super star!!
Thanks Jane! I rather like being called a super star.
I've been slowly raising my carbs. It's nice to have a hamburger bun once in a while! I found I can have 60g at dinner where before it was barely 45g and still be in the green zone.0 -
you are an inspiration. just started here and I think MFP is the answer to getting my A1C down.1

Yes! I whole heartedly agree! It make simple something that can be so daunting. Good luck! Friend me if you like. My diary is open and I comment daily.0 -
Lost 70 pounds from July to now?

Yes, it's actually 85lbs now. I was holding onto a lot of water weight from an illness.1

It feels pretty good, thank you!0 -
You are an inspiration I am also trying to get my numbers down currently my A1c is 7.3 and I am trying without medication as Metformin is upsetting my stomach. Will try to follow your breakdown of carbs etc. and see if I can win this battle.1

Good luck! I do take meds, so that helps me I'm sure. I'm hoping to be done with the Tanzeum (weekly injection that helps me make more of my own insulin) in August. I will likely be on Metformin forever since i also have PCOS. Best of luck! I feel like a moderated approach to carbs is much more sustainable than low carb for me personally.0 -
Very well done shinycrazy! I am new here and inspired by your success story.
A1C was 7.1 Nov. 24/15 and down to 6.0 Feb. 2/16 - however, I am on 2000 mg Metformin a day - eating <100 g carbs a day - dr told me no grains, no dried fruit - down 37 lbs from Spring 2015 - goal is to lose another 30 lb and be less dependent on Metformin.0 -

Sounds like you are really making strides! I have slowly been able to increase my carb intake. It's nice to have a hamburger bun once in a while! I've only been able to tolerate 1000mg of metformin, I'm in the bathroom all day otherwise I bet you will be able to decrease it as you get your a1c down.0 -
A1C tested March 3 was 7.0. Yay. I'm doing my Snoopy dance. It was over 12 last Fall.
In fact doc lowered my insulin a little bit. Hopefully not too far. I'd love to end up near 6 before too much longer with some more weight loss.2 -

That is soo exciting @wdnisbet ! You really made a dent in that A1C! I love the numbers! They make me feel like I'm getting somewhere. Congratulations!0 -
Thank you so much.0

That's just wonderful. I know what hard work it is getting healthy. Well, I guess everyone here know that.
I find out next week how my A1C is. Can't be worse than 14% last July.0 -

It was 3 months, but my doctor just got back from a sabitical (can't spell), then with the pancreatitis, and the psuedo cyst in September, things have kinda slid. I haven't asked what my A1C was since September. But, I have lost 4 1/4 inches on my waist since September. The weight seems to stay the same, or within 3 lbs. It can only be good news on Tuesday.0

Had blood work on 3/4/16 and got the results. A1c was 5.9.
I have that proverbials 'dawn' thing going where my blood sugar rises while I sleep so I generally am pretty good with my numbers in the afternoon and evening and then wake up high again. Last night at bedtime my readng was 111 and when I measured after wakig up this morning it was 135. Then, by 11 AM it was back down to 115.
I also get spikes in blood glucose from exercise, which really baffles me.1 -
I too have sugars readings that can be very volatile. I had some real improvement for a couple of months and a much better A1C and the doc lowered my insulin doses. So, of course, my fingersticks go up. But then today they were lower again. In fact midday was way too low. 57. I just don't know how to explain it.0

Hi All, I'm new to this group. I'm 'pre-diabetic' A1C 5.8 and I don't want it to get any higher. Not on medication. I'm finding it so difficult to stay on 1350 calories a day especially if I work out--I'm so hungry! I'm 63 so know it's difficult to get it off post-menopause. Any words of encouragement??0

Welcome!!!
If you do exercise you can eat some or all of your calories back!! What I did was ate food with the highest fiber content and also eat steel cut oats for breakfast with some sort of protein. Essentially make your calories count rather than opting for cookies etc go for "real food" but definitely have treats or it will not be realistic. You can do it!!! I eat a huge breakfast and it keeps me going! Less hungry for the rest of the day...I was always afraid to try it but it does work for me.
There are tons of very helpful people here on MFP that have all sorts of great ideas!!1 -
Welcome. You don't say how long you've been following your plan, but it does get easier. Like Jane says, starting with a good breakfast can really make a difference. Empty calories are just that, empty, and after an hour, that's how they make you feel.
I'm going to be 60 this year and went through menopause at 40. I'm not convinced of the post-menopause statement. I had lost, like Jane, 68 pounds with Weight Watchers. Gained it back, lost it, gained it back. I think yo-yo dieting is the worst thing for a healthy, consistent weight loss.
