@raingirl21 I'm not there yet... but I've heard to try smaller meals/snacks more frequently. The baby is compressing the stomach which is why hunger can decrease. Maybe some other women with experience in the third trimester will comment with ideas too.

@raingirl21 - I have not experienced this yet either as it is my first, but I have heard this happens as baby gets bigger. As VeryKatie said it is probably because the baby is compressing your stomach, eventually there is only so much room to spare!

Try the small frequent meals as mentioned, and eat calorie dense foods as apposed to the lesser calorie options you might typically go for. (Full fat dairy, salad dressings, and peanut butter for example)

Week 23: 02/05: 147.0 (+0.2, +7.4) - Going to talk to my midwife about it today at my appointment to see if I'm gaining too slowly. By my estimate I ate an average of 2700 calories a day :( I must be off. I stopped using a food scale. So maybe I'm over estimating.
I talked to my midwife and luckily she said she isn't worried (as I'm not restricting or exercising too much). She said women just gain differently. So maybe the gain will increase soon.

    I'll join...

    Height: 5' 4"
    Age: 27
    First Pregnancy
    Goal to Gain: 35-40 lb

    Starting weight: 128 lb
    Week 29: 02/14: 161 lb

I'm up 33 lbs with 11 weeks to go (as of Tuesday)!! How are you ladies doing it.. I really don't want to let myself get hungry as I've done in the past counting calories. Also, I admit I haven't been tracking regularly or accurately, and when I do log I seem to be eating 2500 cals or more. Also, the ligament pain has been bothering me when walking, so my activity has been pretty limited to yoga and swimming once a week. I get about 6000-8000 steps a day. So, I know I'm likely over eating and under-exercising.

I've started drinking milk and orange juice, switched to full-fat yogurt with granola, eating more 'bread-carbs' (i.e. pasta, bagels, toast, crackers), and yes, I do have treats, but try not to over-do it. I ate treats when I lost 35 lbs last year. I snack a lot more too, so all these little changes to my diet add up.

I'm feeling discouraged. I didn't want to be a 50 lb gainer, but looks like I'm well on my way. My mom and her sister both told me they gained 60 lbs for all their pregnancies (mom, 2 pregnancies, my aunt, 3). Maybe it's in my genes?

I will note I'm having a very healthy and comfortable pregnancy otherwise with no complications. I had my glucose tolerance test and I do not have gestational diabetes, my blood pressure is always normal, etc. Baby boy is healthy, so I guess I can't complain too much!

It's great that you have so much insight into your habits. You asked how we're doing it.. so I'm taking that as looking for advice (sorry if not!). The only thing you said that caught my eye was that you don't want to let yourself get hungry. Hunger is our natural cue that our body needs food. So I think perhaps if you try letting yourself get hungry but not STAY hungry, it could possibly help. It's normal to get hungry, and I think that is probably how I'm mostly keeping on track. When I feel hungry I have my meal or snack. But I don't eat just to prevent getting hungry. And I don't let myself ignore the hunger for hours either. And I still have several treats a day!

I do, however, think that weight gain is greatly due to how you're feeling and how you hormones/body react to pregnancy. Which could be somewhat genetic. A first pregnancy is always a surprise (it terms of what your body will do). I know mine has been surprising. I'd rather gain a little too much than not enough, personally.

As long as your doctor is watching over you and you're not at risk for gestational diabetes, there may not be a big issue with gaining more than you originally planned. You might end up with a cute chubby baby though ;)

    Goal to Gain: 15-25 lbs.
    All weight gain is cumulative.
Really hoping to keep weight in check this time. Gained 42.5 with my last baby, 15 lbs in first trimester alone! (eek!)

    Starting Weight: 10/14 (conception): 154

    Week 7: 11/23: 151.6 (-2.4)
    Week 8: 11/30: 153.2 (-0.8)
    Week 9: 12/7: 151.8 (-2.2)
    Week 10: 12/15: 153.0 (-1.0)
    Week 11: 12/22: 153.4 (-0.6)
    Week 12: 12/28: 155 (+1.0)
    Week 13: 1/5: 156 (+2.0)
    Week 14: 1/12: 158 (+4.0)
    Week 15: 1/20: 158 (+4.0)
    Week 16: 1/23: 158.8 (+4.8)
    Week 17: 1/29: 160.4 (+6.4)
    Week 18: 2/5: 161.0 (+7.0)
    Week 19: 2/12: 163.8 (+9.8)
    Week 20: 2/18: 165.0 (+11.0)

Halfway done! Since the 12 week mark, I have averaged 1.25 lbs/week. A little over my target. Going to try to be more mindful of empty calories and do more cardio like walking and Zumba. (Doing circuit training 2x per week at moment.) Average calories this week were about 1775

Oh and I realized that with a starting BMI of a little over 27 (I got pregnant before my son turned 2 and he was still nursing!), I can gain up to 25 lbs for this one! Yay! So I changed my goal from 15-20 to 15-25.

I need to do a better job of staying in my calorie goal! I am definitely just a hungry hungry hippo more days than not recently. The weather was amazing this weekend so I got to go for a couple rides and went for a nice hike on Sunday, it was really great getting to feel like myself again and do the things I love. My family is coming to visit this weekend so we plan to share the news with everyone, my mom is grandbaby crazy (this is the first) so I know she will be elated.

I know it's weird! I've eaten an average of 2612 net calories every day this month so far. I'm 5'6" and have a desk job - and exercise for 40 mins a week at most... it is still freaking me out, even after asking my midwife about it. At this rate I'm set to gain only 20-25 instead of the 25-35 like is recommended.

Wow, lucky you! You're obviously getting plenty of calories so I wouldn't worry too much. You will probably hit the lower end of the recommended weight gain which is good xx

Thanks! I sure hope so. I just have a little worry about the baby's organ development and stuff sitting in the back of my head. But my midwife did ask if I was restricting or over exercising, which I'm definitely not.. so she said some women just gain differently. And I'm measuring at the right number of weeks. Maybe it means I will gain faster in my 3rd trimester. First pregnancy so I have no idea what my body will do.

Thanks for your concern by the way. I appreciate it.

Hi ladies! I'm new here. I just recently found out I am pregnant. I am five weeks today. This is my third pregnancy. My children are seven and ten years old. I am thirty-nine! I know it will be very difficult for me to lose extra pounds at this age so I am hoping to stay on track and keep the weight gain to 25 pounds.

    Height: 5' 4"
    Age: 39
    3rd Pregnancy
    Starting weight: 144 (best guess)
    Goal: 20-25 pounds

    Week 4: 139.9 (-0.1)
    Week 5: 139.7 (-0.3, -0.4)

Really hoping to keep weight in check this time. Gained 42.5 with my last baby, 15 lbs in first trimester alone! (eek!)

    Week 20: 2/18: 165.0 (+11.0)
    Week 21: 2/25: 165.0 (+11.0)

Happy things have leveled out a bit after some quick gains!

Weird thing though, at my OB appointment her scale said 161.0. ??? So weird. I feel like my home scale is probably right since it's been rising steadily? Mine is digital and hers is and old manual kind.

    34+ weeks and 18- 20 pounds. 5'7.

I weighed 160 pounds the day I tested positive and weighed 174 two days ago (179's been my highest.) My eating ranges from 1500-2200 a day, I probably average around 1800.

I feel like I could have done better in a lot of ways. I was looking to only gain 20 pounds, but that obviously won't happen as I have a month left (scheduled for last week in March). I'd be thrilled if I go into delivery at under 180 pounds. :)

@getfitgal123 - I just worry about the weights on my home scale and use that. Other scales may be calibrated differently, so not comparable, or it sound like that one could be user error too. Plus, then they aren't yelling at you for gaining too much

well starting to have a real gain now. I've been fluctuating so much last few weeks between 132-134. I've mostly been hanging around 132. I get around 11-12k steps a day (and I really try to aim for it to hit my goal, it's been hard cause we have a lot of snow and rain here lately so mostly have to get these steps indoors
