Nothing happens overnight. The change in my body has suprised me. I'm 48 and have a better fitness level than I did in my twenties. It has taken me two years lifting to get where I am. I'm always learning. Raise a glass to older women who lift!

44 years old and haven't looked and felt any better than i do now. Folks keep commenting that i look way younger. Woot!8

46 and smarter with weight loss and fitness goals than ever before10

46 (47 in a month and a half) and I feel and look better than I did at 30. And have the VO2Max to prove it.7

48 and finally proud of my strong body. I wish I had discovered weight training years ago rather than slogging through hours of cardio and seeing no results!8

I rediscovered lifting a year and a half ago...I'm 55...It's a L.O.N.G. story but now I tell people to do their "research, research, research!" I spent far too long at 1000-1200 calories/hours of cardio and now my metabolism is shot. I've been lifting to fix it. Haven't lost much weight at all...but I sure am strong!8

43 and like all you other rockstar women I'm the strongest I've ever been. Been lifting now for about 10 years.7

I'm 40:) I lift and cardio, all kinds. I enjoy being my new strong and fit self. No, I'm not a tumbling gymnast or super flexible dancer anymore, but I do what works for me now.6

How many days week do you 40 somethings strength train?1
-
I usually do arms twice a week and legs twice a week . I do cardio on off days2
-
I usually do full body twice a week, then at least one workout DVD of cardio/ dumbbells another day, to get in some accessories.3

I’m 43 and hoping to only get better and stronger as I get older! It’s all uphill from now on ladies!
That being said, have any of you noticed any changes or challenges in recovery times and how you plan your workouts? Or something you are more mindful of? I most likely just need to plan refueling, rest, sleep etc. better but I go through lulls in energy and now learning not to push too hard, all the time. I wonder if any of it is *ahem* age-related or just all part of training. I also recently switched to a HIIT & circuits type training and maybe it’s more taxing on my body atm than I realized... Nobody said you necessarily get smarter as you get older lol
Cheers!4 -
Thx for the responses. I've strength trained twice a week for a year. I was thinking of going to change a cardio day to another one but I still get way sore 2days after..2

I do heavy weight training only twice a week. I also run once per week, do interval training twice a week and swim once a week. Sometimes I insert a short swim after the weights as well as it really helps prevent injury. As I have gotten older I have noticed that lots and lots of warm-up/stretching ids the key to injury prevention and also that I need to alternate heavy and light days to prevent burn out.4

49 in a couple of months, I weight train 3 times a week and I'm the strongest I've ever been!5

47 years old, in the best shape of my life and planning to enter my first ever fitness competition!12

Recovery time has gotten longer as I've gotten older, and I *cannot* skip a good warmup, but mostly I have to be careful of my joints now. It does me no good to have strong shoulders and biceps if my elbows go out on me!4 -
I'm 52, and the strongest I have been for a long time, but I still have a loooonnnggg way to go, only started doing this properly very recently, but already feeling the benefits4

I’m 42, have struggled hugely for about 18 months to lose weight. It seems it won’t budge at all. I feel like an idiot struggling to self educate myself via the internet4

Hi all! I'm 45 and have been strength training off and on for six years. I started out with Jillian Michaels DVDs, then went through NROLFW, Strong Curves, SL5x5. Then I spent a while just focusing on Yoga. Then I fell off the fitness wagon entirely and haven't completely managed to get back on until now. I started SL5x5 again from scratch yesterday and plan to alternate lifting with Yoga. I love how lifting makes me feel, and when I was consistent with my strength training my body was much tighter and stronger than it is now. I want to get those feelings back! Nice to meet you all!3

Kime225 I'm sorry you've been struggling. It can be really frustrating, I know. Have you ever looked at the group Eat. Train. Progress. here? Search for it in groups. There are stickies that go through the basics of figuring out how much you should eat, setting your macros, etc. It's very helpful and the people who run the group will even critique/guide you on your eating and training plan.
What strength training program are you following?5 -
I'm 47, in the best shape of my life and planning to enter my first ever fitness competition later this year! I train 5 days a week, log my food daily and eat clean 90% of the time. Can't say I've noticed a difference in recovery times as I've got older but take BCAAs daily during training so maybe they're helping.3

Thanks @dandelion39 I will look up the group. I am into my 2 week and so far getting success and think it’s through going back to basics of calories in v calories out. My exercise tends to be fast incline treadmill (5 days/week) with ~3/week arm/leg/abdo toning. All of it new to me. Hopefully I will get more ideas and guidance through these forums

I lost 50lbs in 5 months doing mostly cardio, but yep, not sustainable. Besides, I just didn't like feeling thin without some definition! That was at 39. Now, at 43, and 30lbs back on, I'm focusing on lifting primarily and trying to get my diet in-check. I would love more friends from this group to keep me on my lifting path! I have no other friends who like fitness and lifting like I do. I do it alone.4
