A couple of days ago, my husband started to change his eating to the DASH diet plan.
Quite a change for him. Although he did not have high blood pressure before the heart attack, the hospital has told him this is the diet for coronary artery disease and high blood pressure.
https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/files/docs/public/heart/dash_brief.pdf
The key difference is that can't really eat refined carbs, and the amount of meat is very low for him. Only 6 oz per day! He is also to eat less added fat than he was before. He eats vegetables, but is not much of a fruit eater. Made it to 2 fruits yesterday, he needs to get to 4 per day.
It is pretty different from what I am doing, which is more like the Zone Diet. So I am going to have to juggle a bit.
Good luck with the juggling! It'll be an adjustment for your husband, but I expect he'll get used to it after a time.
Maybe have him very slowly increase his fruit intake? I don't know if it's a common issue, but I've had "uncomfortable problems" in the past if I suddenly start eating more fruit than usual...1 -
I am checking in and will each day. I am so off the wagon, I can’t even see it. July is a new month! A month to lose and correct the movement of my weight loss trend. It needs to move downward, not stay about the same for TWO months. That’s part of my resistance. I know it.
This was me a couple of months ago...

Sorry I have been MIA. I have decided something must be wrong with me in my head. I was finally back on the wagon and after my disappointing Friday weigh-in went on to burn the wagon to ashes. Saturday was no better
Someone help me build a new one ...
Why am I doing this every time?
Grrr...3 -

I don't know about everyone else, but I would be a millionaire if there were a points card for burning the wagon. It took me almost 40 years to get back to the weight I was back when it was still ok! Up, down, up up up up, down up up... you know the drill. But now I have stayed near my goal for a few years, and am shaving off the last few - so maybe finding ALL the ways to burn the wagon until nothing is left but keeping the danged thing intact is the way we humans learn. It is infinite. It will always come back from the ashes. Get back on the wagon. There is nothing wrong in your head - we are just made to survive all hardship, which for millennia meant eating all the things when they are there. Eating less is hard. But you can do it!!!3 -

So it's June 30th. Time for me to reflect on my process over the past month. Mind you, I said process not progress. For me, I believe that if I focus on the process -- what I need to do (or not) every day -- then my progress will take care of itself. For example, this week was a prime example of how I let myself get distracted from my process. Although job interviews are exciting and sound quite promising, I cannot afford to let even the "good" things that happen to me derail my process.
I've already been thinking about what I want to accomplish in July. (I'm very much goal-oriented, can you tell?) To be perfectly honest, I had this grand idea that I wanted to walk 100,000 steps each week. Huge number, right? But before I dismissed the idea, I thought, how many steps would I have to walk every day for 7 days in order to reach that 6 figure goal by next Saturday? 14,286 steps per day! I was like, "Oh, I can do that easily if I'm intentional about it! I've done that before." This reminded me of a recurring epiphany I've had over the last several years that I had forgotten about: ALL I NEED IS VICTORY FOR TODAY.
My point is if I focus on the enormity of the 100,000 steps I have yet to walk next week or the 150 pounds I have yet to lose by whenever, I easily get overwhelmed, discouraged, and give up completely because that's so much easier -- and faster -- to accomplish. But if I focus on today, just today, and what I need to accomplish just today, that makes the process so much more surmountable and attainable.
I don't need victory for the end goal. I just need victory for today! Here's to a new month!5 -

Before we go! Thanks for this, and I hope things start to go better. It is true... those compliments, even the ones from ourselves, are a rotten reason to have food treats. Make a great list of simple, easy to do non-food treats that you can stick to! Nothing expensive, and that satisfy the same "itch".
In July, I challenge you to stick with it, do your weigh-ins on the day you choose (you can change this if you prefer) and certainly before the end of the day on Saturdays. Steps also go Sunday through Saturday - it is great if we can get this timing better AND of course, to stick to your plan! Check in every day just to tell us if you're on track that day, what's working or not working, and get some cheers, help, ideas - whatever you need. See you on the July chat!0 -
