My recipe for salmon/sweet potato fishcakes is super simple:- 1 large sweet potato.
- 800g fresh or tinned salmon. In lockdown, I've been using tinned salmon: 800g.
- 3 stalks of spring onion, chopped.
- 1 tablespoon of mixed herbs.
- Something to coat your fish-cakes: at the moment, I'm using dessicated coconut as I'm coeliac. Otherwise, use a form of breadcrumb or even sesame seeds? (careful with calorie count if using sesame seeds).
method:- Pre-heat oven at 175centigrade.
- Roast the sweet potato in the oven until soft (usually about 30 minutes at 175centigrade). This allows the skin to be easily peeled off and the internal flesh is soft.
- Clean the salmon if you need to, ie, remove skin and bones.
- Add the cleaned salmon, the softened/roast sweet potato, the mixed herbs and the chopped spring onion.
- Mix well.
- Divide mixture and roll into 10 balls.
- Coat with the bread-crumbs or dessicated coconut or sesame seeds. Add some mixed herbs here also if you like.
- Place onto baking tray and gently squish down so they are no longer round-balls, but are about 1.5 inches high.
- Cook for 25 mins.

A stack of chocolate chocolate chip pancakes at IHOP is only 690 calories!
My mind is *boom* totally blown. That's barely anything. I assumed pancakes would be so much worse. Dessert-like stuff usually is.
This is relevant because they opened an IHOP a short distance from my house. I know where we're going tomorrow! Lol.4 -

Oh yum. I'm making your salmon cakes soon, @cerizez ! I had not thought to use coconut to replace crumbs - I usually use crumbs made from my own GF bread that I make for my husband. They don't taste like much, though. I like the idea of coconut.
So folks, another week already lurching off the starting blocks - weigh ins for Sunday-Monday:
@graceojo999
@alexsandramorff
@reflectionofme
@ells_runs
And keep those phrases that help you stick to your commitment coming! I like yours, @CanadianGiraffe - it is too easy to let our desire to be perfect and to succeed completely kick us to the curb when we give up just because we aren't perfect every day. Good one!2 -
Wow y’all! Great motivating posts. Food aka CI really are something to think about more. I know that really is what it’s about. My bff, who is both a nurse and personal trainer, once told me it really is more about the food than the exercise. I log (mostly) and I get predictions that have me close to 10 pounds lower in five weeks, but that never happens. I guess my logging isn’t accurate enough. Or maybe I’m choosing foods that are not accurate. So, even though my motivation and commitment is waning a bit, I will try to pay closer attention to the food that goes in this week. Maybe try to scan the upc more when it’s possible. Thanks for all the great responses. It’s always so great to come here and listen to what you all have to share. 🥰
@matthewsfive So sorry to hear about your Covid19 scare, Vera. Sending good thoughts your way. Please let us know what you hear. Hoping for good news for you.3 -

Question: I’m curious.
What do you all set as your goals for the week on MFP? 1, 1.2, 2 pounds a week?
How about activity? I’m unsure if I should put lightly active or active? I routinely get over 8.5k steps and move a lot during the day, but don’t always “workout”.
Also, if you Fitbit, do you set it for negative calories based on your Fitbit activity throughout the day? I’m not sure I like seeing that I have 300 calories left for the whole day at breakfast only for it to change by the end of the day.
I have my weight goal at 2 lbs a week. A little aggressive considering I do not get much exercise in.
I have my activity set to sedentary. I work at a desk all day, then cook supper and then crash after everyone goes to bed. I may get around 3,000 steps in an average day. When I work in the garden or do something out of the ordinary instead of cooking, I can usually near 7500 steps.
I do have my Fitbit to correct my calories if I am not active. As annoying as it is to see I have less calories eat, it’s a reminder to me that I didn’t fulfill my exercise/movement so I need to eat less. So goes the saying burn more than you take in.3 -
Here is an end of week question for you. Do you have a word or a phrase (or an image) that reminds you of your commitment? Something you say to yourself that keeps you to it?
I know these might change from time to time, but try to think of your most powerful reminder or encourager. The words or image that give you the courage to keep on.
It takes a lot to motivate me. I have zero willpower. However, a few days ago I was watching a video about people with autoimmune disorders and thyroid issues (🙋🏼♀️), and the instructor said something that stuck. Bc of these issues I must try harder than everyone else in order to have just a little success. My success may not be huge like everyone else but it will be huge for me and my conditions.

Word, Phrase or Image that reminds me....my clock image/profile image. I took that back in January and said 'the time is NOW.'3

Yesterday was so so... I got up and exercised 1st thing, then stayed within my calories, but other than that it was kind of a lazy day...
Got up and did my exercise this morning... and made it to work, my head is absolutely hurting I really wish I knew what was going on, I'm so over this... it's not a debilitating headache, but it's a very annoying one... Dr thinks it's a migraine with sinus symptoms, instead of the other way around... All I know is I want them to stop...5 -

I thought I didn't have one, but I do. I repeat it all the time without even realizing lol.
It's: "Nothing worth doing is easy."
To remind myself that accomplishment comes from effort, and even though it's hard and miserable effort sometimes, the payoff is worth it.5 -
Monday - Pilates Flow done - 16 minutes @conleywoods I hit the pieces to J's insect puzzle in case she came in while I was doing this. She never even came in. She was watching Daniel Tiger with my husband. I feel so good getting that in. For anyone who has never tried Pilates, it is so good for you and feels so good too. Hope you all have a great day. I'll check back later.3

I had to think about the word or phrase that reminds me of my commitment. That says something, doesn’t it?!
•Weight loss/good health/___ is a journey, not a destination.
•You will thank yourself three months from now for what you do today.
•Grace over guilt.2 -
Yesterday I kept on track with my food but didn't get any exercise logged. Today I have already been to the gym so off to a better start!5

Proof that a lot of weight loss depends on eating.
I biked 82 miles last week, and walked 6.2 miles.
My daily steps (I'm not on the team):
M 17322 bike 13
T 16643 bike 13
W 18849 bike 13
T 17605 bike 13
F 15832 bike 12
Sat 16924 walk 6.2 bike 3
Sun 21321 bike 15
By Friday morning, I had lost only 1/2 a pound because I snacked before bed.

My word is empowerment!3 -
Monday is rolling! I have had a busy morning, and more to come. But first, I want to start the word/phrase collection and ask you to use them on the person who shared them whenever they are getting discouraged or having a bad time. And if someone did not share one, I'm sure a lot of these will help multiple people!
Here is what we have so far:
@YinxFed did not share one, but I see hers loud and clear - persevere! Keep going, and above all keep positive.
@ells_runs "I thought about quitting but then I noticed who was watching". Good one. And we'll send her some weekend reminders, right?
@CanadianGiraffe "Do not let perfect be the enemy of good". If a day is less than perfect, that's no reason to quit!
@lovethyneighbor "I must try harder than everyone else to have just a little success". Therefore, even a little success is huge.
@eggfreak The clock. It is time. Now.
@Terytha "Nothing worth doing is easy". You'll feel amazing when you push through and get there!
@evangsimmons170 empowerment. Yes! The power comes from the accomplishment, and it grows and grows the more you take control and make it happen.
@micki48 •Weight loss/good health/___ is a journey, not a destination. •You will thank yourself three months from now for what you do today. •Grace over guilt. These are a gift useful in many situations!

This is my message to myself. Because no one else is going to make it - and my day makes me.

I remind myself that I want to be better than I've ever been, I was skinny before but I have never been fit. I can do this, and I will do this...5 -
I keep myself going by telling myself "Weight loss takes time and that's okay " I definitely freak out that I am not doing well and need to remind myself that I am doing awesome. I take measurements from time to time and this information is really motivating. Currently my hips measure what my waist did when I started! Holy $h@! , how did that happen. I also take a lot of selfies and I like to admire my progress.
I agree with @jugar on the food vs. exercise issue. I am currently trying to up the volume of my meals so I can feel really full on less calories. Exercise for me is about being fit enough to do the stuff I want to do. I use to not be able to mountain bike and now I can. It's also about toning and shaping my body. I try to not eat my exercise calories but honestly it doesn't always work out 😯7 -

This is amazing - your hips measure what your waist used to! Well done!!! (see the hats flying in the air)2 -
@jugar I've adopted this phrase from a friend: "Progress over perfection". This applies to so many things in life and really helps me to see the little improvements and focus on those rather than giving up when I'm not perfect (which is pretty much always lol).
Today this definitely applied, hubs and I went out to dinner. While my meal wasn't perfect, it certainly showed progress as I cut my portions by 50% and chose healthier options (sirloin steak, shrimp & veggies) instead of the tempting options (burger and fries).6 -
I did not share a word or phrase that I use often. I honestly don’t really have one. Y’all had some great ones though and I may use some of them!6

@Yinxfed Am I right in remembering that you'd signed up for the free trial of the Premium MFP? If I am, how did you like it? and have you found it more helpful than the normal? Thanks for any input.
@jguldi11 I like that 'progess over perfection'. I used to beat myself up a bit that I couldn't get all that needed done...done!...now I'm just satisfied if I accomplish one thing (like on Sunday, tackled the disastrous potting bench)...I am only one person. I can see that it applies too to our work on ourselves and our fitness.
Still feeling good and determined to stay on track. The 'dry' July has been no problem - it seems when I'd like a drink is purely situational...on a hot sunny afternoon a G&T or white sangria might be nice or at dusk after a busy day a glass of wine out on the patio...but I can use those calories elsewhere for now...like for the amazing Georgia peaches that are in the market right now - in season, just nearly fully ripe - pop them in a brown paper bag to bring them to that perfect juicy heavenly ripeness.
Will be going back to the office next week, it will be so strange. Alternating weeks in and working from home. But I'm also planning a 2 night getaway to my late aunt's cottage in the Berkshires foothills...away from the traffic noise, the daily masses amplified from the church next door, and the lawn mowers/weedwhackers and blowers. I need some silence or at least to be able to hear the wind, the birds and the summer insects.
Happy Tuesday, all!5 -
Yesterday was a good day, accomplished all of my goals... Today we are having a cook out at work... I don't know why, I don't see the point and I think the boss is not the brightest in having one but whatever... I went and bought everything, so it's all good... But that means I had to switch my meals up, but that's okay too... One thing I am pretty good at... adjusting my sails...
Have a great day !6 -
Good morning all! The day here starts early and FAST!
@conleywoods Kristi, thank you for the idea to hide puzzle pieces 🧩. It’s Juliet’s new favorite game. ❤️
Today my husband turns 66. So we will be baking a cake for him. 🎂 we will have spaghetti for dinner. So I will plan for that. I would love to get a walk in, but there have been no minutes left in the day lately. 😴
Hope you make it a great day!🎉

As it happens, I didn't sign up for the free trial after all (general apathy, I'm afraid!)

Okay thanks, I'm content with the free version, just wondered if I was missing out on anything.
