Well, I just received notification that my October Race 13.1 will be cancelled. Not enough volunteers. I am so disappointed since that race is one of my favorites and so close to home.0

Happy Friday! Oh wow Jenny, the Netherlands, yes, I am sure you get cold weather, a lot of precipitation (snow?) and of course, darkness! Okay to give you some idea, today it was about 15 degrees C, which is about 60 degrees F, when I did my hike. Like Sharon, I live in a mild climate where it isn't too cold but a normal morning run for me during the winter could be 25 degrees F, give or take a few degrees, which is about -4 degrees C. The coldest I have done is probably about -12 degrees C, which is certainly not my preference! Summers here are very hot and humid, so like last week it would probably have been about 80 degrees F, which is about 27 degrees C, for an early morning run. Fortunately right now it is much cooler and more pleasant.
I was supposed to do a training run this morning but instead I went and hiked with my BFF. We went to a big park in Nashville, which is the location of my next half marathon in November. There are roads to run there, as well as trails. We have a trail 10K coming up as well - I will most likely walk most of that race. So today we hiked, some roads and some trails. It was very nice and we saw a few turkeys and deer. We were able to go to a coffee shop afterwards and sit outside to enjoy it, such a lovely day!
Well for those of us in the US, it is a three day weekend!!! Hope everyone has (or has had) a lovely Friday!!!! Run Happy!!1 -

That sucks . I get the disappointment. When is your next race? That will be something else to look forward to.
Gloria you are commited! I have run with minus temperatures and with snow, but i think this year i will use the treadmill a bit more during the winter.I will try to do at least 2 runs/week outside though.
I did my long run today ,cause i had to shift a lot of things in my schedule for next week. So instead of sunday/tueday/thursday, my runs are saturday/monday/thursday. I was not happy that i did not get my 3 day rest this week and it was hard today. I think my breath starting leaving me around the halfway point, but i pushed through. 7.5km , ~54 minutes.

Oh Sharon, I just saw that your race is canceled! That is so sad. I am sorry. I think a lot of races and other events are about to be canceled. Tons of people I know are signed up for the Rock 'n Roll Nashville race that is in November and our Covid cases are the worst right now. Maybe in November things will be better but I just don't see how they can do a big race like that or any other large events. I have a small trail race next weekend (10K) and then a half in November - I really don't think either of those will be canceled because they are so small.
Jenny, great job on pushing through on your run! Great pace and even not getting the rest that you wanted this week, you rocked it!! Well done!
I did my run this morning, training plan called for 30 minutes of running at a slow pace. It tells me how fast/slow to go, and I try to stay in the range. It was five minutes walking, 20 minutes of running and then ten more minutes if I felt up to it. Then five minutes walking. I did changed up my route a bit and had to cross some streets which required waiting for cars, but otherwise I did the 30 minutes. The last ten minutes were faster than the required 13:12 - 14:12 min/mile. I have such a hard time with that slow pace but I am trying to stay in that range because it helps me build my endurance so I don't have to stop and walk. Overall running pace was in that range. I forgot my heart rate strap this morning and the optical HRM on my Garmin is never right, so it has my heart rate super high, way higher than it ever is. So either it is wrong as usual, or I was having a heart attack. I hate that I forgot the strap because having it read so high messes up my statistics.
Hope everyone has a lovely weekend!! Run Happy!0 -
Good Morning! Happy Sunday.
Thank you Jenny and Gloria. Yes, very disappointed about the cancellation of one of my favorite races in October. When I first started running, our first house backed up to the Greenway, this race is on. I use to take my son out in the stroller running all through there. Same Trail they use for the Race 13.1 series in June and October and it is only 5:00 away from my house now, starting at North Hills Mall. Oh well...
Gloria, sounds like you had a great time meeting up with your friend hiking and right where your half marathon will be. Nice to have time after for coffee and BFF chat. Sounds like you have a great training program too. Awesome work.
Jennifer, great job getting your long run in. Being flexible and changing things up can be very good.
Becky, Hi!! Thinking of you and your upcoming surgery.
Getting ready for some indoor workouts followed by Yoga.. Then out for my early morning grocery shopping. Take care all and have a wonderful day.0 -
Good Morning everyone! Looks like everyone is doing well. It’s been a busy week. Exercise pretty much was on hold except for a couple of days. Although I didn’t exercise yesterday, I did get out shopping. I walked quite a bit with just a bit of pain. I did feel it this morning. The count down has begun now. So many things to do to get ready. I’m planning on getting as much exercise in as I can this week. Keep moving everyone. Love seeing how well you’re doing. Still miss SP though.1
-
Happy Sunday!
Miss you Becky but I know you are gearing up for your surgery and I am rooting for you!
Sharon, I get it about the race being close to home, I love to do the local ones. Many of my friends don't like them because it is the same place where we run most of the time...but I love seeing so many familiar faces and it's so much easier to get up at regular time and not have to drive forever to get there, I really like it! There is a half marathon here at home on the 18th but I am not doing it. I can handle being with a few people here and there but no one in my community wears a mask and no once social distances (and very low numbers of people have gotten vaccines here) so I am being cautious about which races I do, and this one is one that I won't risk. I haven't been going to the group runs for the same reason. One of my friends asked me if I would volunteer for this one and I had to tell her no for the same reason - just too risky. I have two races coming up and both are very small so it should be easier to distance.
So today it was rainy when I got up, probably would have been good for a run because it wasn't a hard rain and it isn't cold, but I did decide to stay in and do the treadmill for once. I hardly ever use it because it doesn't work well and my Garmin doesn't work well with it either. Garmin always tells me I am going faster than I really am (it will say I am doing 11 min/mile when I am probably doing 12) and the treadmill says I am going slower - like today the treadmill said I was only going 3.1 mph but I assure you, I was RUNNING, lol. I found a way to measure how fast it is going, at some point I need to do that. Also I can't use the incline on this one anymore or it starts screeching and the display on it goes to a solid black after I have been on it for a very short time. It's just old. DH says I should get a new one but I use it soooo little that it doesn't seem like it is worth spending the money. Anyway, my run was very short, just 30 minutes. Tomorrow is my rest day and I hope at that point that I am back on track with my schedule!!!
Take care everyone and Run Happy!0 -
Good Morning and HAPPY MONDAY!!! My favorite day!!! For those of you in the US, happy Labor Day. I hope everyone has a terrific day regardless. It looks like it is going to be a lovely day here. DH is off today of course, but we have no plans. Just rest and enjoy the day. I might do some cleaning or some shopping but nothing is set in stone. It is my rest day today, no running or anything, I am going to try to have two FULL rest days and that even includes not walking. I feel like I probably need the extra recovery time. Take care and Run Happy!!!0
-
Good Morning! Happy Tuesday. I hope all in the US had a wonderful Labor Day..
Gloria so nice to have a treadmill. I do prefer outdoor running but a treadmill sure does come in handy when the weather is bad. So sorry to hear about your area and Covid. The people are the same way here. I just don't understand why people would be so resistant to wearing a mask, social distancing and getting a vaccine. If people had done it right to begin with, I truly believe we would not have all these new variances. Some sound scary, where the vaccine might not be effective at all now. And all of this could have been avoided. My hubby and I really wanted to start going to a fitness club and will not yet because of this. I think I saw NC is third in US for Covid increase.
Getting ready for my Cardio workout and then outdoors for my two 5K's. I have a virtual 5K this week and will pick my better time. We had to pick our finish time and do negative splits. The person closest to their predicted time wins in each categories.
I just signed up for an online Running Challenge for next year. Run the Edge. They had a great deal for 2022 yesterday.
Got to go. Have a fabulous day!

Good Morning!!! Sharon, I hear you about the gym, there is a fitness center nearby that I would go to if I felt it was safe. They have a lot of classes that I would enjoy but nope, not gonna risk that right now. I am now resigned to the fact that this will probably never go away because people just ain't gonna do what they ain't gonna do, if you get my drift. It's a shame. My DH and I want to travel, we want to go out to eat, we want to go to concerts. But right now it all seems off limits.
Anyway, did my run this morning. There is no school today (can you guess why? Too many Covid cases, SMH) and so I felt like I might have a bit of reprieve from the traffic issues and I need to change up my route from time to time to challenge my body. So I did this route which in my mind was quite hilly - maybe that was just mental, I don't know, lol. It's a beautiful morning, mid-60s and low humidity, perfect weather for me! I started out with my five minute walk and then the first quarter mile of running was up a hill - ha! My workout was 20 minutes of running and then 10 more minutes after that if I wanted too (of course I wanted to) but yikes, at the 17 minute mark a hill really got me and I walked for about a minute. I am trying so hard not to let these hills get me but ugh! Interestingly I can look at the elevation graphic on my Garmin and see exactly where that was!!! Then I did the second ten minutes and coming back of course I was coming back downhill so I was able to push hard on that section and that made the last ten minutes my fastest!!! Then I walked the five minute cool down. So I think it went well. I have been reading a lot of running books lately, some of them are so humorous. One talked about mantras and positive self talk, and I have always tried to do that, sometimes I get caught talking to myself out loud as other runners go by! Lol, but anyway, one I read was an elite runner (now I can't remember who) that always said, "I'm Fine" or "it's fine" or "everything is fine" so today I kept saying "I'm fine" to myself!!!!
My training plan is on my Garmin and it only tells me my workouts one week ahead so I know what I will be doing on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday. Nothing more than that, and so far it hasn't integrated in any speedwork. It hasn't even had me doing anything like strides, but I try to do those anyway. All runs so far are "easy runs." I have mixed feelings about this. I know if I don't start doing speedwork, I am not going to be able to get my pace up. But on the other hand, my primary goal at this point is building endurance and I most assuredly am doing that. The half marathon in November has brutal hills so I need to be persistent and keep working on these hills. One step at a time!!!!
Run happy everyone!!!!0 -
Becky- I miss sparkpeople too. I actually have not gotten into habit of checking in here- but thank you again Gloria. I will try to do so. Back to fall back- walking.- Gloria I found downhills murder on my quads so this winter I am going to focus on weight training. I did pull out a Hal Higdon half marathon plan to do. No race. 12 weeks so looks like it is doable for the rest of the year.
I don't mind cold. I hate to run in the wind or super hot and humid weather. I am getting a bit too old to chance icy- so that is out. I do have some cardio DVD's for that ...and come to think of it since I am not doing a race anyhow I can begin this before a Monday- so..9/9 is day one for the 84 day plan! and adjust as I need.
Which running books?0 -
Good Evening! Walk this morning. Took the dog. I don’t think she was very happy with me cuz I was going a little too slow. My goal this week is to exercise every day. The elliptical was pretty easy yesterday. Plus the treadmill wasn’t bad. Granted I’m not going really fast.
Gloria-our Covid numbers are high here but the hospitalizations aren’t really bad yet. Our schools require masks except for the private schools. Public schools just started today so we’ll see if our numbers go up or not. I just don’t see this going away anytime soon.
Weather here is beginning to feel a little like fall now. Mornings would be perfect for running. This weather gets me in a good mood which is helping me right now.
Keep moving everyone. You guys are doing a great job!0 -
Hi Em, I've been reading all kinds of books, one was called Waterlogged by Noakes and it was about overhydrating,, very science oriented and stuff, not super well written either, but very very interesting. That one was a few months ago. I've read The Happy Runner by Roche (he says run faster, not harder). I've read a couple of the ones by Meb, one of those was 26 Marathons. One book I read was a dystopian sociopolitical novel called Slummer - it was soooo good if you like that kind of thing, about a runner. I just loved that one. I read Running with a Police Escort by Grunenwald and that is hilarious but she does use some "language" so be forewarned. I also read I Hate Running and You Can Too by Leonard. There weren't a lot of new startling revelations in that one but it was a very quick read and humorous. On a different note, I read Fat Girls Guide to Running a Marathon by Creffield (I am not fat at all and I have already done a marathon but I also read this for the humor, also has some "language")". I know there are some others I have read that I can't remember, I have been reading a lot since I quit my job, not just running books either. Next on my list is one by Dean Karnazes. Oh, yes, I read the one by Deana Kastor as well, that one was a while back. And Faster After 50 by Friel (that is for all endurance sports, not just running).
Em, speaking of downhill, it reminded me of one of the times I did Ragnar and I had like an eight mile leg or something, and the first six of it was like an 5% decline, so I ran so fast down that hill (really it was a mountain I guess) and then I had two more miles to go and it was flat and I could NOT GO!!! Could NOT. I mean, it was flat but it felt like it was uphill and I had to walk, it was awful!!!! LOL
Becky, sounds like you are getting the exercise done! I am kind of having a hard time with the days being shorter, I mean, it is like 7 pm and starting to get dark and I feel like it is bedtime. It's still hot but the humidity is way down so it definitely is feeling much better for being outside. No masks in schools here, and our governor has said he would defund schools who try to mandate it and he also said if it is mandated, parents can opt out so it does no good, what a fiasco. Hope your DH, boys (and their girls) and your mom are all doing okay!!!0 -
Hi everyone.. Em, Becky and Gloria, I really miss Spark People too.. I had joined them back in 2009 after a friend told me about them. It took time to figure out the site but once I figured it out, I just loved it. Now, I just feel a bit lost without them. I did sign up for that Spark 365? But have had issues trying to input food in the tracker and I did not see an edit button. I had e-mailed Chris sometime ago, but never heard back on that. I also got an e-mail about a Fall Challenge, but right now I am doing too many Challenges. I even miss being rewarded with Spark Points. Crazy, but true. They don't have Garmin on their devices so I am using an old zip from fit bit.. It is not accurate at all. They don't make them anymore so I guess I will need to shop for an inexpensive fit bit to replace it soon.
I ran my two 5K's yesterday and today I focused on Strength, toning and Yoga. I have lab work soon and then I will go to Target to get my flu shot. We are expecting some rainy weather this afternoon and possibly tomorrow. Hope it does not rain in the morning when I hope to get out for another two 5 K's.
Gloria, I like your running plan. Way to go..
Becky, you are doing great with your workouts.
Em, Weight training is such a great alternative.
Jen, I hope you are having a great week.0 -
Greetings to all!!! Hope everyone is doing well and running happy!
I got up in the morning and randomly decided to do my long run today instead of tomorrow - for several reasons. One thing is that tomorrow I have professional education (because yes, I am keeping my certificate up to date in case I decide I want to find a job) so it just felt like it might be better to do the long run today and the short run as a recovery run tomorrow. Training plan for the long run - five minutes walking warmup, 50 minutes running, then 20 more minutes if I felt up to it, then five minutes walking - so a total of eighty minutes. I did lower body strength yesterday, so my legs were tired. It was also a bit warmer this morning. And I picked a super hilly route that has really challenged me in the past - really challenged me. So maybe this wasn't all that smart but this is what I need to do to train for my half, which has brutal elevation gains (this will be my third time running this half and it would be really nice to do better on that course but those HILLS, lol). So of course, this morning was a mixed bag. I got out there and ran until the turn around point, when I walked for a minute to take a drink. Then carried on but got to a sizeable hill and got part way and felt I needed to walk the rest of the way up. Okay, no problem. Then after that, it felt like I walked a lot. I did the 50 minutes okay, yes there was some walking and yes it was very slow, but it was FINE!!! Then came the next 20 minutes and while I did run some, honestly, I walked a lot of it. Like I said, tired legs. I am slightly disappointed but on the other hand, it was time on my feet, it was extra challenging in more ways than one, and I did get the time in, so it was still a win. I have NEVER done very well on this route due to the hills, but like I said, my race is way more hilly than this so I will need to keep on keeping on!
I usually try to stay very active after my runs and I have been quite busy today so not sitting much, and I can tell my legs are sore and tired - and I am sure a lot of that is because of the strength training I did yesterday. I suspect that if I had waited until tomorrow to do my long run, I might have been even more sore - all of those squats and lunges that I did - that is all just starting to set in!!!
Hope everyone has a great day, I have a lot of ideas of how to spend my time, like sweeping off the back porch and stuff, we will see how it goes! I am reading Ultra Marathon Man Dean Karnazes so I expect I might sit on the porch (in addition to sweeping it) and read for a bit!!!
Have a great day everyone!0 -
Good morning everyone, you're all doing a good job with your runs!
I ran my 5k route Monday and today. Today went better than Monday, but i can't complain in general. Tuesday and Wednesday were both yoga days. It's gotten warmer this week and i couldn't be happier Tomorrow and Saturday will be yoga days again, and Sunday i have my long run. I think i'll aim for 8k if my hip isn't bothering me.
Keep up the good work everyone!1 -
Happy Thursday All!
Jen, great job. You sound like you have a nice routine going. Hope all goes well with your long run this weekend and no hip problem. Yoga really does help.
Gloria, good for you about keeping up your cert. What Profession is the cert. for? Glad you were able to get your long run in yesterday. Good luck today.
Becky, you are doing great with your workouts this week. Thinking of you with your upcoming surgery.
I am thankful our weathermen got it wrong today. It should had been raining when I woke up, but it wasn't. So I did my cardio warm up and headed out the door thinking if I can get in one 5K, I would be happy. Well, I got to do both. Yay!! By the time I got home, shortly after, the sky opened up and with thunder. It should rain most of the day now and will bring slightly cooler temps.
Still trying to get use to this site. I probably spend more time on FB, but try to get over here too. I am Sharon Sunshine Sou if any of you want to connect there.. If so please send me a message to let me know.
Talk later.

Good Afternoon! After a painful day yesterday I’m feeling better. I shouldn’t have walked up the hill. I didn’t think it would affect me that way. What a person won’t do for a little cardio!
Today I just did the bike peddler and then I’m hoping to get out for a walk tomorrow. I’m going to attempt the lake. I know I won’t be going very far but we’ve been having beautiful weather and this was always one of my favorite times to run. I figure the scenery will do me good.
Way to go everyone on your runs. Fall races are the best. At least around here they are. Lows in the 50’s and highs in the low to mid 70’s with zero humidity!
I hope everyone is having a nice day!0 -
Jenny, I LOVE yoga, and it is so good for the hips too! Sounds like your runs are going great!
Becky, hope that the hip doesn't act up so you can get out and enjoy the lake! With the beautiful weather, I know you will enjoy it. Are you seeing any fall color yet? The weather here isn't that cool yet but for me it has been super pleasant with low humidity. It's much cooler than average and we couldn't ask for better for this time of year!
Sharon, I saw that you are going to have rain from the tropical storm, so glad you could get out before it got bad!!! You are on target with your workouts and mileage!!! I am a CPA, I could let my license become inactive but it is a pain to reactivate it so I am going to keep up my educational requirements if I can and just in case I decide to look for another job.
I just finished Ultra Marathon Man by Dean Karnazes. Like WOW! I actually read it a few years ago but it is still incredible to read about his journey. I might look into his newest book.
Got my short workout done this morning. I considered doing some hill repeats but my training plan didn't call for it and I felt that I should take advantage of the fact that there is no school and do a route that I don't usually do when school is in session. I was a bit nervous going that way since that is the route on which I took my most recent tumble - and I don't want to fall again, so I am kind of hypervigilant and paranoid. But anyway, I walked yesterday afternoon with my BFF (on the track, three miles) and had my long run yesterday and my legs are still a bit tired from leg day on Tuesday so it was super slow and that worries me, I need to pick up the pace! Just saw some memories on Facebook (sent you a PM on Facebook Sharon) from one year ago where we did some virtual races and I was so much faster, yikes, I am getting slower EVERY year! Anyway, got home and did upper body strength, so I am sure my arms are going to be feeling it tomorrow, but tomorrow is a rest day.
Everyone, take care and Run Happy!!!!0 -
Happy Friday everyone! It's rest day today. I will be busy around the house and stuff, but no running. I am not doing any strength or anything either. My race is tomorrow, my arms are still sore from yesterday and I want my legs to be well rested. I am sure that I will be doing mostly hiking rather than trail running tomorrow. We will see. Depends on how technical the trail is. I am trying to figure out what to wear because it will be very cool in the morning but will warm up. If I am hiking rather than running, I will be chilly early on. If I run, a t-shirt or singlet will be best. I don't do well when it is chilly, and my definition of chilly isn't the same as anyone else's lol. The race is a couple of hours away so it will be later tomorrow before I get back but I will post an update when I can. I hope everyone is having a lovely Friday!!!! Run Happy!0

Happy Saturday All.
Got my 15.50 easy long slow distance run in this morning. Even though my October race got cancelled, I decided to keep up the training for it and will re-adjust my weeks for my November and December race. My 13.12 streak every Saturday is still going. I started this in May. It really feels easy now doing 13.12, mentally and physically. I need to improve on my pace though. My pace has declined these past few years. I need to pull out my running books and see what I have. I will check out what you are reading.
Becky, I am glad you are feeling better now. Hope you were able to get out for your walk around the Lake.
Gloria, yes, I was very thankful the weathermen got it wrong and I was able to get that run in and home before the sky opened up. It was thundering too. Glad you are keeping up your CPA license. I was a licensed Mortgage Broker and RE Salesman/Broker License, but let them go while still living in Florida. I could kick myself now, but I will be 67 years old next month and have no desire to go back to work. I would have to get relicensed anyway, having moved out of state.
Jen, hope you are having a great weekend.
Em, I freaked a bit going downhill this morning. Most of my run was uphill and it took a bit to get the foot strike right for downhill. Yikes!
Something cute someone posted on FB Half Fanatic Group.

Love the graphic Sharon, runners ARE awesome for sure!!!!
I need to get my run in today, I am tired from yesterday, just getting up so early, traveling, etc. I guess I am procrastinating a little. I have a bit of a headache, a short run might help. But I just ate breakfast (my DH and I always have breakfast together on Sunday so I didn't want to make him wait on me) so I am waiting for a little while to give things time to settle.
My trail race went about as I expected to. Since I have issues with falling I am not as nimble on the trails as I used to be and I end up walking a lot. This course wasn't too technical and there were some areas with asphalt so I just ran as I wanted but mostly stayed near a bunch of friends. One of the "highlights" was that many many runners were stung by yellowjackets at about 4.5 miles, and some people were stung multiple times. I was stung once. There were grilled burgers and hotdogs at the end, trail runs do all kinds of crazy food. It was in a state park, really pretty, and the weather was perfect! By the start it was warm enough for just a shirt so I didn't have to fool around with tying a jacket around my waist. There were a lot of bridges and we hiked back to one of them after the race was over since it was so pretty out there.
Have a great day, and run happy!1 -
Good morning everyone,
sharon nice run, keep it up
gloria at least you did it. Next time it will go better for sure.
I had my long run yesterday, 8km but it did not go too well. I don't know if it is because i changed a small part of my route, i was tired or something else, but even though i was slower than last week, the last 3km were very rough. By the time i was done, i was completely out of breath. Then, instead of doing part of my stretches outside like i normally do, i came straight home and sat on the couch for a good 5 minutes before i could even begin to stretch. My stretching was a bit shorter than normal because i just couldn't do it anymore. Then i laid in bed for another 5 minutes before i could master the willpower to get in the shower.
Now self doubt has settled in. What if next week is just as bad? What if i can't even do my 5k tomorrow?
Today was yoga day ,and that was no fun either. Way too many ab exercises, and i never do too well on those. My core is too weak i guess. So i took a couple more extra breaks and adjusted one of the exercises to semi-do it.
Let's hope my legs feel a bit better tomorrow than they do today.

Good Morning and Happy Happy Monday!!!
Jenny, I am sorry your run was so tough. I think next week you will find things to be much better! Difficult runs happen to everyone. Could be any number of reasons, maybe you were just extra tired this week or maybe your nutrition was just a bit off, or maybe it was the weather. Sometimes going further is slower until you build up more endurance. Don't worry! Just go out and do your 5K tomorrow and just relax and enjoy it! And I hear you about the ab exercises - that is a weakness for me as well. I need to just work on that more so that eventually my abs will be stronger. You did well to modify - modification is key - you will get stronger and stronger! Keep up the good work, you are amazing!
Today is a full rest day for me. As of right now I am doing two FULL rest days (as opposed to active rest days). I really don't like it! I was doing just one full rest day and was feeling a bit worn out at the end of each week, so I decided to try this for two weeks. But today I feel so restless. I will probably change it up next week, get back to walking on non-running days like I was before. It's so hard for me to balance this with my rheumatoid arthritis and Ehler's Danlos!
Take care everyone, have a lovely Monday and Run Happy!!!

Gloria- thanks!!! I am going to jot down those book titles! And the downhills in the marathon I did is why I never signed up for another on!! Haha- but maybe some day..
I love Dean and read that book
-to everybody here Hello! and I need to get into the habit of checking in and reading up. I am reading!- not ignoring you lol
just things have been kinda busy! I like coming here and getting inspired..and yes Sharon- weights and conditioning are great esp when Winter comes!0 -
Gloria, happy to hear you had a great race minus the yellow jackets. Sounds like you had perfect running temps and lots of yummy food afterwards.
Jen, So sorry to hear your run felt so tough yesterday. I also have had runs like that.. So many factors can effect you, from the weather, sleep, diet and over training. And yes, sometimes a change in your course. I have a very easy Yoga routine that I love that you may want to look at. It is only 14:00 long and really gets those hips, legs and core. It is more like a stretch type Yoga. Here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-PYY_f1is4 I hope your legs feel better for your 5K tomorrow.
Hi Em and Becky. Hope you both are doing great. I need to look for my running books. They may still be in a box somewhere.. Becky, I am sure you are counting down the days. Is surgery this week?
Wishing all a Fabulous Day!0 -
Happy Tuesday All!
Jen, I forgot to mention that sometimes I feel the way you did because of dehydration. Here is something I saw on taking electrolytes.
Before and during your run, rehydration should be your main priority. When training in warm conditions, rehydration will allow you to maintain fluid balance and stay cool. Accordingly, your best choice before and during your run would be water, a heavily diluted sports beverage, or water with electrolyte tablets.
I usually will take a sodium replacement that I add to my coffee every morning and I also add it to my water bottles. I usually have a mixture of my Organic Lemonade mixed with some OJ and Antioxidant Juice. I add a scoop of electrolytes and shake it up to blend. Then put in the freezer so it will be nice a cold when I go out for my run. I was also told it is good to weigh yourself before running and then after to see how much water weight you lost. It helps to replenish the fluids.
Got my two 5K's done this morning early.
Hope you all have a great day.0 -
Greetings!!! Em, always so happy to see you here! I always enjoy your posts, especially with you being vegan and stuff. I am not doing vegan right now, but that is always how I lean.
Becky, thinking of you!
For hydration I used to be hypervigilant about that, but after reading Waterlogged, I am not so diligent. I should probably revisit that and work on hydrating more. I used to use a lot of coconut water and Pedialyte (Jen, don't know if you have Pedialyte there, but if not, it is an infant/child's electrolyte drink). For my dysautonomia the cardiologist has me salting my food liberally but as of late I haven't even been doing that. I have salt stick tablets as well - haven't been using those either. Some of the ultra races, they weigh the runners frequently and if they lose too much weight they are pulled from the course. But overhydrating is a thing too, it's a fine balance!
Did my short run this morning, it is hot and humid again. Today's run was the warm up and cool down and then a 10 minute run and an optional additional 10 minutes which of course I did. I am wondering where the speedwork and tempo runs are in this plan, I am already on week 5 and there has been none of that. My pace isn't getting any faster and I don't think it will if I don't do some speedwork. At my current pace it will probably take way more than three hours to do this particular half as it is super hilly. I can't remember for sure but I think the elevation gain is over 1,000 feet.
Well, I am going to head out to the pool. Everyone take care and Run Happy!!!

Hello! Got my run in this morning. I really went late because of the weather. It was raining a bit and it was supposed to rain hard. I don't mind a gentle rain run but nothing crazy if possible! I picked a good time, and it didn't rain. I did my short run. I try to change up my route so this time when I went, I did a slight variation of my usual and it had me starting on a bit of a hill (after my five minute walk). And starting a week from today, I have "speedwork" on my training plan - it's just strides to start, and I do that anyway, but glad it will finally be on my training plan! Hope everyone is enjoying the day!0
