Very happy all the Texans have checked in after the tornados! I’m trying to imagine hiding in a tub with a labradoodle, sounds tricky!
Short easy run on asphalt today - supposed to be a tempo run but my leg is tweaked so I’m taking it easy.
Have you ever been running trails and caught a stick with one foot that spun it around and slammed it into your other foot, sort of jamming your two legs apart? My least favorite thing to do! It spun my knee all out of kilter and the next day my whole leg felt sore all the way up to the hip. It’s not improving very quickly, either. It feels like I did something to the tendon that runs from the inside of my knee to my hip. It doesn’t hurt when I run but is slightly painful all the time, and bruised at the knee joint.
We passed a very nice and well behaved German shepherd today, and were surprised when we passed him again to see him carrying on and straining at his leash. Figured he had to see something we weren’t seeing, and sure enough, there were three does hiding in the brush just off the trail batting their eyelashes at us.7 -
@katharmonic – where is your June Spartan race? I know you work hard for those races but seem to have a great time on the course also.
@Teresa502 this June one is in Bethel, NY on the site of the original Woodstock festival. This is a sprint (5k) and it's pretty flat and should be relatively easy. We have a big group from the gym going because it's probably the closest one to us now (there was one closer but they are no longer holding it). It's a good "starter" spartan race too so some newbies are trying it out. Including, hopefully, my boyfriend who I don't think quite knows what he's getting into . I'm probably going to do the race both Saturday and Sunday, with the Sunday team being a little more time-focused and the Saturday one much more fun-focused.
I have at least two more races to do from deferred codes and one of them I'm probably targeting the Killington beast race (13.1 miles, some crazy elevation) in September, which is the original spartan location and probably the hardest in the Northeast if not the US. I chickened out of the beast and did the sprint there last year so we'll see how it goes this year.5 -
I've been stalking the last couple of days with likes and hugs as needed. I just didn't have time to comment on everyone.
I'm so glad that all of our Texas friends are okay after the tornados blew through! I, too, can't imagine hiding in a bathtub with a Labradoodle.
Love all the great running that is going on. I had a run on Wednesday morning...only one mile, but a run it was. Walked at least one mile the other days. Today is tennis, then work, then another walk, probably. I'll try to report in and update tonight.
Oh, I did get my sage grass field burned off on Tuesday night. I'll try to post a few pictures too. It was pretty windy, so was surprised that they went ahead and did it, but it was blowing in the best direction ever and just made the burn go faster. So glad to have that done.

Just a quick 2 miles this morning for the streak. My overall pace was 9.21. I guess I can be speedy when I run shorter distances. 😄

I am at 111.92 out of 150 goal. It's definitely going to be a push with 6 days left and needing 38 plus miles. Not sure I am up for 10K plus per day right now so I will be satisfied as long as I beat my 129 miles in Feb I think. And yes @kgirlhart definitely speedier with the shorter distances.
It hasn't been a great month so far. Not sure why but need to turn my attitude around.5 -

Logging 2 uneventful but nice enough runs. It's been really nice in the predawn hours in the mid 40's. This weekend we are getting a pretty good warm up. Early next week I am meeting up with my parents at Guadalupe River State Park for a few days of camping so will be running the trails there and am really looking forward to that.4 -

@SummerSkier I feel like I am right there with you. I just can't seem to get focused on getting things done I need to do and running is one of them. It's just been a hard month. I think the rollercoaster weather has something to do with it.

I played doubles tennis this morning for an hour and a half, worked at the daycare for 5 hours, then came home and did a treadmill walk to keep my streak going.
As promised, if you are interested, there are pictures of my field being burned off by the volunteer fire department this past Tuesday evening in the spoiler.
They showed up with 2 big fire trucks, their brush fire truck, and about 15 people.
This is the first smoke as they started the fire near the woods so it would burn toward the road. Thankfully, the wind was blowing in that direction also. If you look closely, you can see my house through the trees on top of the hill.
The flames and smoke were intense.
They sprayed the edge of the road and the ditch to keep it from jumping the road and burning the pavement.
All went well until the brush truck got stuck while spraying the last remaining flames near the woods.
Fortunately, the fire chief lives about a mile from my house, so he went home and got his tractor to pull them out.
What better way to wash the mud off of a firetruck than with a fire hose.5 -
@quilteryoyo that's so interesting about the burn. Do they do that for practice/training and you offer up your field? Good job on keeping up your streak.

This week work was crazy, the weather was not nice, and I was still feeling the effects of the half. So not a whole lot of running got done. I definitely didn't feel like getting up early today for a run and the forecast was calling for rain, but I dragged myself out of bed and was pleased to see it was not in fact raining. It turned out to be decent weather for running in the low 40s and the sun even peeked out a bit. Felt kind of humid actually. The recovery from this half is slow and falling out of condition over the last month or two has definitely caught up with me. Still learning this lesson that I need to build up again slowly.4 -

@katharmonic Regarding the burn. I'm sure it is good practice for them, but I'm not sure that is why they do it. If you ask, and give a donation (no minimum required) they will burn it off for you. It will help to kill the sage grass, which is no good for hay, and help the other grass to thrive. When I was little, we (my mom, dad, brother, and I) used to burn that field off every couple of years. I wouldn't dare do it now by myself or just a couple of people since there are so many new houses around, including mine. I think I I gave them a sizable enough donation that if I need them to do something again they will be eager to do so.
Great job in getting yourself out of bed and out for a 6 mile run this morning. I hope you recover from the HM soon and can start slowly building back up again.

It’s interesting how different parts of the country care for the hay fields. We are under fire watch weather right now in Tx so no controlled burns. We had one a few months ago which turned into a wildfire unfortunately and I am sure someone got fired for that mistake,1

Just did 11 miles this (late) morning. I went out too late, and suffered for it. But it was worth it because I spent the morning visiting with my son and girlfriend. They drove up from Houston last night and are going to a Stars hockey game tonight. They left around noon, so it was a short visit, but was good to see them.

It is really windy out today which is making it feel really cool. I wish it was as warm as it looks like it is...nice sunny blue sky. Anyway, I opted for a treadmill session. This was my "long run" for the week - the longest so far this year. I guess I'm getting there. Anyway, I walked one mile total for warm up and cool down. I did a run/walk for 4/1 minutes. The walks were at 3.8 mph. The runs were a ladder from 4.5 - 5.0 - 4.5 mph. It wasn't too bad and I felt I could have gone longer, but decided that probably wasn't a great idea. I was pleased that my breathing was okay today. I ran a total of 4.0 miles. The average pace wound up being 4.5 mph. Those ten minutes of walking at 3.8 mph sure slowed the run down, but made it doable for me at this point.4 -
@SummerSkier We are in the season of fire watches too, that is why they require you get a burn permit before having an open burn. They had issued the permit the day before, when they weren't calling for winds. I heard that they didn't issue any on the day of the burn, so I was surprised they didn't call and cancel it. But all is good and it is done. I would not have burned it with those winds without the fire department there for sure.
It is a rural world problem @Scott6255 . So funny. Glad you had a good visit with your son and his girlfriend and got out for a nice run afterwards. Congrats on making your goal already.1 -
I actually was able to get in a long run today and it was lovely. Headed to the forest via back roads. Saw some of the swans, though all in separate locations vs together in a group.

Today I ran the Joggin’ for the Noggin 5K race in Limestone, Tennessee. The race is held annually to benefit the Crumley House, a brain injury rehabilitation center. The course is beautiful, rolling hills on a country road. There were 376 people registered. The first year I did this race was in 2015 and I think I’ve missed one time since then. I woke this morning to snow/sleet and a strong wind but the race wasn’t until 10:00 am. By that time the snow/sleet had stopped and the sun was out but it was still cold with the wind gusting. This was an out and back course and going out the wind was at our backs, but once we turned around, it was right in our faces. Not sure what my official time was since it isn’t posted on the website yet, but my Garmin gives me 33:02 and I didn’t remember to press stop until I had crossed the finish line and started walking around behind it so I’m hopeful it will be 32:something. Edited - My official finish time was 32:32, 8th our of 31 in my age group, and 114 of 298 finishers.
Tomorrow I’m volunteering at the Virginia Creeper Trail Marathon which is put on by our track club. One of my friends is running it and wants me to pace her the last five miles. It is supposed to be 26F at the start – where did you go Spring?
That was really nice of the fire department to come burn your field @quilteryoyo. Fires scare me. My parents barn burned about 6 years ago. I got a call about 3:00 am, looked out my window and it was totally engulfed in flames. I never will forget watching the destruction it caused as it burned up the hay crop, a new tractor, hay baler, and other equipment. Thankfully no animals or people were near it.

Great race this morning @Teresa502 . That wind was really cold today. That's going to be a cold marathon tomorrow too. I hope you can figure out how to dress so you stay warm enough while volunteering and not too warm to run the last 5 miles. Good luck to your friend. Yes. Fires are scary. They burn like crazy and for a long time when hay in a barn catches on fire. I'm so sorry that happened to your mom and dad, but glad no animal or human was hurt. I wouldn't have done it without the fire department. I'm glad that is a service they will provide.1

I ran 1.5 miles this morning for my streak. It was nice and even a bit warm. I'm going to move my usual long run to Monday. Tomorrow I am going to Ft. Worth with my Mom and four sisters to see the Ft. Worth Symphony. I took Monday as a vacation day, so I will just run a short run for the streak tomorrow and then do my long run on Monday.

Great race @Teresa502. That's a clever name for that cause too.
It was cold here this morning too, and I got up to let the dog out and got hit in the face with the wind and snow and cold and said no thank you. Maybe I'll run later at the gym but chances are low because I had a margarita at lunch. No regrets.
Things bottom out tomorrow with single digit and even negative windchills tomorrow morning and then a slow climb to more seasonable early spring temps by midweek. If not, I'll just be over here having more margaritas until it is more hospitable out.5 -
Sorry I haven’t been on in a few days.
I was on the road for work this week, so I had several long days. I did get in 5 of the 80/20 runs this week, plus a day of cross training. Three of the runs were shorter and were between zones 1 and 2. One run had hill repeats. Today was 6 miles total, with warmup and cool down in zone 1 and the rest in zone 2. It didn’t feel like I had run 6 miles since it was slow, which is a big part of it, going further without feeling as tired. We’ll see how the next 8 weeks of this plan go.

It was 29F with winds of 15-17 mph this morning at the start of the marathon. Thankfully, I volunteered to shuttle runners from the parking area to the start line so I was in the warmth of my car until the race started. Unfortunately, it was still the same weather when I finished my shuttle duties and was outside. Talking with the other volunteers and cheering on the runners was fun though. The course is on the Virginia Creeper Trail (all but the first 2 miles) and is a couple of out and backs. Runners pass the start/finish area at miles 2, 9, 18, and 25 so it was a busy area. The winner finished in 2:55. The first female finished at 3:15. Amazing to me. My friend did much better this year. Last year she got dehydrated and ended up in the back of an ambulance getting fluids. I ran with her on the last 7 miles which warmed me up. I think there were three runners still on the course when I left but there were enough volunteers still around to cover everything.

Sunday is my "rest" day most weeks. In keeping with that, I walked one mile on the treadmill after church and before lunch today. I had thought about walking 1.7 miles to get to an even 54, but I just didn't have it in me today. Garmin said that I overexerted myself yesterday and had poor quality sleep, so I might be tired today. I thought it didn't know what it was talking about, as I felt fine this morning. But, I started falling asleep in Sunday School. I just couldn't keep my eyes open. So, maybe Garmin was smarter than me. Anyway, I spent the afternoon on the couch watching TV, with a short nap. I think I needed that in more ways than one.3 -
hahaha @katharmonic ! It's cold here too. Very windy which makes it even worse. I like your attitude though. Maybe we should all join you for some margaritas.
@marisap2010 Sounds like you are doing great with the 80/20 plan. And, I am always amazed that people actually get their runs in when they are traveling for work, or pleasure. I am just not good at that.
@Teresa502 I thought about you this morning. I'm glad at least part of the time you were able to be inside your car. I would have probably taken some warm up breaks through out the morning too. Sounds like you did have fun though and glad your friend did much better this year and that you ran the last 7 miles with her. I know what a help that is! Another chilly morning. I met a friend at 5 am for 5 miles. It was 29F but no wind which was really nice after the last couple of days. So happy they have reopened the gyms at work. When I run with my friends in the town where I work I don't have time to go back home and get a shower so having a facility across the parking lot from my office is very handy. I'm sure my co-workers appreciate it also.
@quilteryoyo – great job getting your mile walk yesterday when you could have easily skipped it and gone straight to the couch! I love Sunday afternoon naps!

119.08 out of 150 miles. So probably not going to make my stretch goal for the month but pretty consistent with the previous months for distance and speed so I will accept that with grace.
I realized yesterday that I am really a lot less active since I lost Bandit. I don't miss the hour in the car but I miss the hour of activity at the barn with him for sure. I noticed my arms feeling more flabby and they actually chub rubbed against my sides on a long run last week!!! That gives me 2 hours in the evenings which I need to find an exciting alternative for. It's been HOT here actually turned the AC on Sat since the house was climbing over 80. Was proud of myself for getting out the door yesterday afternoon/evening and hitting some tennis balls against the backboard. I started up previously but then the weather was *kitten* and my hips were really upset with the different movement. I am ready to find some folks to actually hit a few balls over the net with. One of the guys I know at work says he has a group of ladies 2x a week in the evening so maybe I will ask him if I can join there. I really am not wanting to join a club or take
lessons per say or even a league seems too much to me right now. Just meet a few folks to maybe hit for 30 minutes a couple times a week would be nice.6 -

Three of the runs were shorter and were between zones 1 and 2. One run had hill repeats. Today was 6 miles total, with warmup and cool down in zone 1 and the rest in zone 2. It didn’t feel like I had run 6 miles since it was slow, which is a big part of it, going further without feeling as tired. We’ll see how the next 8 weeks of this plan go.
