HOW IT ALL WORKS: The August challenge runs from July 31 - September 3. F2F months always start on a Sunday and end on a Saturday, so adjust your calendars!
Every challenger weighs in on their chosen day, every week without fail. At the end of each week, the tallies are done to determine the team and individuals with the most weight lost. The best losers are announced with full fanfare every Sunday. The team competition is all in good spirits - may the most losing win!
We also celebrate those small, steady losses. If you lose, however small an amount, you are in the green! At the end of the month, we celebrate everyone who lost at least a bit every week. You are heading steadily towards your goal even if you aren't at the top of the weight loss leaderboard.
To make your weigh-in easy to find for your team Captains, please put it right at the top of a message, and use this format:
Weigh In Day:
PW (Previous Weight):
CW (Current Weight):
If you miss two weigh-ins in a row without asking for a break, you will be dropped from the team, so be sure to inform your team captain if you are traveling, sick, or just need some time off. If you take a break, you can be excused for a week or two, or are moved to the Support Team for longer. You can remain on the Support Team for as long as you need to. You still participate in the discussions, you can weigh in if you want to, but it will not count in the weekly tally.
Once you reach your goal weight, you join the Goal Zone! You continue to weigh in every week. If you have 2 weeks above your self-defined goal zone, you go back to the regular team to lose that amount before it builds up. You will have a chance to hone those maintenance skills and stick with your team!
In addition to your own team, there are weekly F2F Full Group CHALLENGES. You can do all or none - it's up to you. Participating adds a lot to your success, so we hope to see you there often! These can involve anything fitness, health, or nutrition - and they’ll get you moving, thinking, and learning about this journey. Check the Announcements section for full group challenges.
Let’s show our fellow challengers some F2F love! Introduce yourselves right away, and let the new month and year begin!!

Welcome to August!
This is our home for the month, where all of our joys and challenges take place. Please (re)introduce yourselves and set some goals and daily actions for the month. Focus on the small every day choices, and you will get where you want to go!
I am Liselyn, co-captain along with @ashleycarole86 . I live in rural Québec, and I'm a retired university professor of music. My weight loss story? After being somewhat overweight for most of my life, I really packed it on while in an admin job that involved a lot of sitting, meetings, travel, and meals. I tried many times to lose, but it was not until I was 58 that I got really serious with both food and exercise. In October 2022, I'll hit 10 years on maintenance, always refining and making sure I don't have to do it all over again. Yes, it is possible to lose weight and get in shape during and after menopause!
I know there are people on this team who have a lot to lose, others who have lost a lot and are closing in on their goals, and some who might be working on losses that are stubbornly resisting. There is much wisdom here, and the most important lesson we learn from each other time and time again is that it is not a straight shot, there will be trials and errors, and sticking with it when it feels like you have fallen off yet again is the best thing you can do for yourself. Plateaus can be good, but going back the way you came is not!
Some helpful information/tools:
Posting your daily updates
We know from experience that posting daily (or as often as you can!) makes a huge difference to your success. Use any format you like to let everyone know how you are doing on your daily goals and habits. You can report on food, exercise, water, sleep, or whatever you are tracking and trying to stick with. While you're there, talk about how you are, ask questions, and if you can answer someone else, please do! Congratulate others, commiserate, enjoy someone's rant, or go ahead and rant yourself. It all helps make the kind of community where we are in each others' heads when the hand is reaching for that off-plan snack, or the couch is feeling way too inviting...
Weighing in
Please try to weigh in on time! When you post, put your weigh in at the TOP of a message, so it is clear and easy to find. If you cannot post your weight for whatever reason, please request a week off, or if you need a longer break, you can request to move to the "Support Team" where you can still participate but your weigh-ins will not be part of the weekly tally. This is where members who are ill, on vacation, or just needing a break can hang out for as long as needed.
The F2F Habit Tracker
If you want a simple place to track your most important habits, give this a try. You can see how your teammates are doing too The link and how-to info are under "Announcements" on the main F2F page here:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10870457/f2f-habit-tracker-august-2022#latest
So everyone, tell us a bit about you, your goals for the month, what steps you are going to work on. It's fun to know your name and where you live (if you're willing to share that), what brought you here, how your weight loss journey has been, and where you are headed now. Let the introductions roll!3 -
@jugar - I'll sit on the sidelines again this month - we've switched to home hospice care now for mum. I miss you all - had a quick glance at the July conversations...great photos, talk of shoes, jobs, home repairs (ugh), covid...
I'll be back as soon as I'm able to focus.6 -
Hi all, my name is Amber and I'm trying to get back on track after nearly a year's worth of setbacks.
I'm an avid reader, I enjoy weight lifting, and I'm trying to get back on track after a bit of crash and burn last year. I started at over 270 pounds and I'm currently sitting around 183. My low point was 160, so I'm a bit disheartened by having put 25 pounds back on but I'm still in there.
I'm still recovering from Covid this week though so mostly what I'm doing these days is napping and coughing.11 -
Hello WaistAways! My name is Carol and August will be my 3rd month with this group. They are truly a source of support, information and inspiration. I am about 1/3 of the way to my final end goal. My August goal is to continue, diligently, while I prepare for hip replacement surgery.
I live in Saskatchewan, Canada, and I'm still working 4 days a week in a law firm at 68 years of age. It helps to keep me moving and retain muscle mass (you have no idea how much fat paper files weigh ). I live alone with my cat, Tux, a big old farm cat I brought home as a kitten.
I like to go to movies and football games, too. These things help me to keep moving as well.9 -
Hi All. My name is Tameka. This is my first challenge of any kind on MFP. I've been trying to loose the same 50lbs for 5 years. Just unmotivated I guess. I'm hoping a challenge is right up my alley. I'm 46 from Connecticut. I also do weight watchers. Work full time from home. Married with 3 kids. Love reading. 📚😊10

I feel like I only just posted an introduction... July has flown by. I'm Katie, 34 living near Nottingham in the UK with my husband and our two cats. I've been overweight since my early 20s, and recently learned I have binge eating disorder and low self esteem which I'm in therapy for. My weight loss has been stalled for the last year, but I'm sticking with the group as I find it very helpful. I'm trying to balance discipline/creating new habits with flexibility and not making strict rules... easier said than done! I'm feeling like I need to move more, so that's my focus for August along with tracking my food intake. I just started running again, I also have an allotment which I am really enjoying, and I see a personal trainer once a week. Recently I had a go at indoor bouldering and there's a place locally so I will find a time for OH and I to go.
@conleywoods my wedding shoes were Irregular Choice! The style is 'Smartie Pants' and I had the cream/ivory ones for the wedding, and the black pair for work so I could get used to walking in them If I were to go back to wearing heels now, I think I'd need more practise shoes lol
Today was pretty tiring! I managed a rare lie in which was most appreciated, then went to the allotment and did some more weed-strimming. Just the strip down one side to do now. I also noticed one of the squash/gourd plants has a, well, squash growing so I'm excited so see what that ends up like. I wonder if it'll be tasty or better as decoration - I've only used butternut squash before and it's definitely not one of those.
I went to the butchers and got a couple of bits from the other supermarket that our main one didn't have, then I've been batch cooking today:
- marinated chicken for chicken tikka (cook tomorrow)
- marinated lamb for lamb rogan josh (cook tomorrow)
- paprika chicken stew
- peach and chickpea curry
- chillied sweetcorn soup
As well as the chicken tikka and lamb rogan josh, on my list for tomorrow are sausage rolls, chocolate muffins, oat & ginger biscuits, sultana flapjack and garlic bread rolls. I've got another allotment trip planned and some chores to do at home. OH is on his last night shift now, so once he's up from mid-afternoon tomorrow we'll spend some quality time which might include helping at the allotment.

Happy Sunday! I just finished up the tallies for July and we did really, really well! As usual (and preferable, in my mind), we did not lose the most pounds, but by % of body weight, we lost steadily all month. Lots of our people in the top lists - we'll have a party after the results are announced, and then try to keep the glory for another month in August!7

Good morning all. Happy Sunday! I switched my weigh in day to Sunday to match my WW weigh in day. Hope that's okay. Ready to get back on track. Do I need to list PW as this is technically my first week?4 -
Hello team & happy almost-August! My houseguests are still here and we are about to head to brunch. I'm Kay, 27, living in Boston, struggled with my weight starting in college, got into a restrict-binge cycle for many years that I am clawing my way out of. Been with the team since Aug 2020 (minus a small break in early 2021) and love these people! Big on home workouts and home cooking, starting a new job tomorrow (!!!) after 4+ years in asset management.
@PlaneMonkey your house!! is sooo!! cool!!! and those shoes are fabulous. I'm going to try to attach my haul from DSW - the pink heels they had were too high for me (I'm 5'8" and won't do more than like 3 inches for the office) so still on the hunt there but I got a nude/pink pair that are so cute:
with a coupon code and 2 giftcards, I paid $96 for these 4 pairs plus a new set of sneaker socks. woooo! I am also eyeing this red pair: https://www.dsw.com/en/us/product/bellini-fuss-sandal/533167?activeColor=600&size=9.5
@conleywoods I rushed to the irregular choice website haha, these are so funky! and I feel like a lot of shoes go with a jeans + blouse look
welcome to the new team members! I owe Ashley my steps and exercise and I need to set up the habit tracker. I'll be back in later today.

Hi, I'm Loraine,
I am a 58yr old Londoner living in Missouri. I moved to the US in 2010 and have lived in OKC, Phoenix, Madison, MS, Las Vegas and moved to MO in January 2022.
The move was an awful experience and I have gained around 35lb in 6 months. I need a accountability, discipline, different habits and an awesome team to help me on my journey - so obviously I have the last part nailed now I've joined this group
@jugar I'm glad to hear you can nail at 58 as I have been struggling since menopause

Sundays are just fine! You get to join the early bird contingent on the team - it's our day 1 every week, so you get the whole week to make progress and show everyone how it's done!
For this week if you have a record of your weight from last Sunday, that would be great to use as a starting weight for you. Let me know and I'll put it in!2 -

@Kali225 I just discovered that DSW has a Canadian site too. Uh oh...
@ashleycarole86 I'M BACK on the step/exercise team. I became slothy during July - only walking to the garden and back over and over, but not really getting in good steps very often. And exercise got hit by the hot weather. No more excuses!!! My Fitbit is on the charger, so it'll be a short day today, but I have decided enough is enough. Or really, not enough is not enough.
My OH has all kinds of those lines - "the more you eat the more you eat" and "the more you sit the more you sit". He's just a barrel of laughs6 -
Since I neglected (as usual!) the reminder for Sunday people, here is who is still to weigh in today:

Hello all from Washington state! @jugar may I change my weigh day to Sunday as well since that's the way of the group & this is my first week anyway?
Intro
My name is Kay, but I'm known in my family as Kasey if that makes it easier there being another Kay already 😉.
I'm a retired person (1 yr) and have mostly worked at a desk the entire career. I've battled my weight since my pregnancies years ago!
I do enjoy activity, especially camping, fishing, hikes. I go to the pool several times a week. In winter it's crucial as our weather is no bueno.
I lost 50 lb back in 2015 thru WW and was even recruited to work for them. I did for nearly 3 yr but was laid off at the beginning of the pandemic. That's when I started putting some of that 50 back on! (I was super-bummed & hurt) It's taken me a few false starts until now to get serious again. So here I am. My Dr recommended MFP.
I'm glad to know there are others with the menopause challenge. Ugh!
Let's do this!8 -
My name is Lauren and I live in NC. I have been up and down with weight my entire adult life, but mostly up. I had lost a lot of weight with weight watchers 10 years ago (about 60 pounds), then gained most of it back. I lost about 40 pounds during graduate school and then gained about 20 of those pounds back. Over the last year, I have been basically maintaining 😕
My goal this month is to consistently track my food intake. Funny how that is my goal every month 😂 I do well for the first 2 weeks and then it falls by the way side. Maybe I should use the habit tracker this month.
Great job team for coming in first for July!!8 -
Hello team Waistaways! I am your co-captain alongside our fabulous @jugar and my role here is to run our step challenge. Happy to have new members, returning members and continuing members set to join us in August!
A few key items to know:
-Step challenge is an optional add on but it can be super helpful to report in and hopefully you'll find it motivates you to move more.
-All intentional activity counts, so you need to provide me with your daily steps + additional minutes of intentional exercise not counted in those steps which I will then convert to steps for you
-If willing, commit to a daily step pledge and provide me with that target. Your total steps + exercise minutes converted to steps will count towards this pledge. I will use it as part of our consistency stats in my weekly report.
-You can report daily or weekly. The week runs from Sunday to Saturday so each Sun/Mon please ensure I have your stats from the prior week.
Hopefully that covers it but feel free to ask if there are any questions. I have been on holidays so I'll be doing a catch up and last call for those who participated in July Week 5 and then I'll be able to wrap that up!
Now, a little about me!
My name is Ashley, I'm 35 years old, and I am married to fellow teammate and weight loss accountability partner @bowens1973
I was overweight my whole adult life until I committed to a new lifestyle last year. I have a history of binge eating, emotional eating, and generally just loving on food way more than I needed to. There is a decent amount of obesity in my family and while I was a super athletic kid, the weight just piled on when the activity stopped but the bad eating habits remained.
I sort of tried to lose weight over the years, sometimes on a website like this, sometimes just by making more sensible choices, but I was always walking a fine line and found myself easily slipping back into my old bad habits.
I had mostly given up by early 2021, accepting my lot in life was to be obese for good and determined to find peace with that even though I could never find comfort or love for myself. One morning in late January I woke up from a bad dream about my size and for whatever reason I just got started on here and I haven't left.
Just shortly before (Sept 2020), my husband had a life changing hip replacement surgery. He was previously struggling to walk short distances and suddenly he was able to do much more than before. So, while I started first, after a couple of months of tracking my food my husband saw my success and he hopped on board.
The rest is history! I found this group and the MFP community and my participation there has been instrumental to my success.
I went from 293 to the mid 160s and decided as I was in a normal BMI for the first time in adulthood that I was ready to switch to maintenance.. I am a relatively new maintainer and looking to translate the new habits I made while losing into habits I can sustain for life.10 -
Hello! My name is Michelle. I am 54 years old. I live with my fam in Ontario, Canada. I am semi-retired. I stopped working to be a stay-at-home mum in 2008 and just never went back. I did start volunteering at my children's school where they needed me but when Covid hit, I stepped away. Hoping to go back this September.
My goal for this month is to get 'more' active. I start the day with 30 minutes of yoga and I am usually able to get out for a 30 minute walk twice a day. My challenge is that things I like to do involve sitting ie reading, knitting, video gaming, etc. I had plans to kick it old school. I did some Tae Bo with Billy Blanks and dusted off my step but the old Baker cyst decided to rear its ugly head and will have to dial it back to just walking until it settles down again. My weigh loss goal is to lose approx 30+lbs but will be taking it 10 lbs at a time.
What I love most about August is the vision of pumpkins, changing leaves and all things Autumn
Question: Does anyone know how MFP calculate the daily protein requirement?
Cheers!

My favourite little newsletter came by email today - it is not always my fave, but often it really hits some nail right where it is needed. This one did.
I know I am not alone in getting stuck sometimes. We sit there, knowing what has to be done, and we just don't do it. Well, here is a terrific reflection on that state, and an excellent (but kind!) kick in the rear to get past it --
https://brittlestar.substack.com/p/asleep-at-the-wheel?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email
I hope you enjoy it! And I'd love to hear your thoughts on getting out of wallows.2 -
Hey everyone!
The summer is zipping by - hard to believe we are doing intros for August already.
I'm Brad and I'm the proud husband of @ashleycarole86 - my BFF!
I have been in my weight loss journey for about 16 months and have hit a bit of a plateau - I find summers particularly challenging, which seems a bit counter intuitive given that there is greater choice for physical activity, but I find there is also greater temptation.
August will be spent partially losing the weight from a 2 week vacation back to Ontario to see family - knowing that I have the knowledge and desire to get back to where I was pre-trip, I decided to enjoy the time and hit my favourite spots around southern Ontario. I will also be working towards my second Gran Fondo this season. This time I will be taking on the Vancouver to Whistler 160km ride that is rated "extreme" due to the massive incline. I'm nervous but excited and hope to spend as much time on my road bike this month as possible.
For those that are new to the group, welcome! You're in the right place, with the right people.
