Let’s get to know each other!

    1. Tell us a little about yourself? Where are you from? What are some of your hobbies? Etc.
My name is Tammy. I am 52 years old.I try to stay as active as possible so I can chase down my 3 yo grandbaby and swim with the manatees. I am married, 31 years, and have 3 adult kids. I have 2 grands one is brand spankin new. Can't wait for the 2 to meet. Still have psycho dog that can't be trusted with any of my babies. Even though he is aggressive, he has a sweet side and shows it most when he hears us talk about euthanasia. He has been with us for 10 years. My first bite was 9 years ago... so it is not new behavior.

    2. Why are you on this journey? What pushed you to start?
Being able to play in the mix and not just be an observer of life. My size had pushed me very close to that threshold.

    3. What are your triggers and how can you avoid them?
Emotions of every type. Anger being the most food driven to squash. I am learning to feel my feeling not eat them.
    4. Do you have a favourite diet you go by? ie keto, low carb I tend to eat a high protein diet due to the fact I have food allergies. Gluten, dairy, yeast, and honey. So I avoid those as best as I can. Breathing issues and swelling are how my body handles these foods.

    5. What is your favourite way to workout?
I tend to do heavy lifting but my favorite is scuba diving. Heavy lifting makes handling my scuba equipment easier to deal with and I am better able to enjoy the dives. Swimming, paddling, and hiking are other things I like to do. I ride a stationary and elliptical while watching TV.
    6. What are some of your goals this month? Year?
I am going to do at least 2023 miles of movement this year. I count everything. I want to lose more pounds and do so while traveling. Where don't know yet.
    7. What do you expect to gain from the team? Do you have any suggestions?
    encouragement and friendship.
    8. Share some words of wisdom with your teammates.
Progress is progress no matter how small or slow.

Hi, I am a returning member. My name is Deb and I am 59 and live in Iowa. I joined mfp in the spring of 2020. I had 4 risk factors that would result in a poor outcome if I were to contract Covid. Sat down and made a list of what I could change and weight was at the top of the list. Started out by eating as little as possible but started seeing black spots in front of my eyes and feeling dizzy. I began to research weight loss and found myfitnesspal. Went from 223.4 lbs to 134.4 lbs last April.

My life changed after that. I met someone special in April and moved an hour away from my family to live with him. We are both 59 and enjoy walking outdoors, guitars, and animals. He has a 1 1/2 year old yellow lab named Chaos and I adopted a 3 year old Siberian Husky named Ninja, from the shelter. We moved from historic downtown to living next to a nature preserve. Every day there are wild turkeys and sometimes deer in our yard.

My triggers are boredom, loneliness, and depression. I got depressed in September and again in November and gained 20 pounds. Am currently working on strategies to overcome depression and find enjoyment in little things.

Since I have Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease and am severely lactose intolerant my diet options are counter to the typical healthy diet since have to avoid lactose, potassium and phosphorous plus limit protein. Calorie counting is my form of weight control. Walking and resistance training are my favorite forms of exercise.

Trigger foods are diet pop. It upsets my stomach unless I eat something with it and the sweet taste makes me crave chocolate or nuts.

What I would like to get out of the group are tips on meal planning and advice on cooking for others and meal planning. Would also enjoy hearing about everyones successes and the strategies you used to achieve them.

I posted this on my page but I'll share it here as well

I spoke to a personal trainer that I chat with every once in a while at the Aquatic Centre and I think this will be the last month I'm gonna focus on weight loss and come February I'll be moving into Maintenance. I'm coming to a point where I just can't lose anymore without losing muscle and decreasing my calories to a point where I can't maintain. I'll probably keep losing a bit here and there just cause I'm still increasing my running and I imagine I'll be outside doing more stuff during the summer, but I'm not gonna obsess over it after this month

I'm down from a XXXL shirt to XL. I went from size 54 pants to size 40. My blood pressure and blood work are all excellent. The only pain I get is in my left knee once in a while but besides that I feel completely fine. I'm now running 5.5 km a day 5-6 days a week and I've been increasing my weight during strength training gradually. I'm done lol

Your journey has been amazing to watch. Remind me when it gets closer to February to get you moved to the maintenance side of the spreadsheet. You still weigh in weekly.

    Exercise: ✔️✔️

Running behind this morning. They called yesterday afternoon with an appointment for an ultrasound of my lower right leg. Of course I slept in. I did some mini walks yesterday to get my exercise done for the day. Depending on what time I get home will decide what I do for exercise as I have a telephone doctors appointment this afternoon.

Good to hear you are recovering. What goals did you come up with for the month/year?

Yes, thanks for asking! Getting better every day --- pretty much feels like a bad chest cold at this point. Small set back as I slipped in the shower the other morning. Didn't fall but n8cely wrenched my back. Grrr! Clumsy.

I am still working up my goals but basically it comes down to three 5 items:

    1. improved Sleep. I am lucky to get 4.5-5 hours of sleep each night? This leads to 2 isues. First I am always tired and second my main activity late at night is snacking. Simple, go to bed early, wake up refreshed and skip the 500 to 1,000 calaries eaten between 19PM.and 2AM.

    2. Nutrician. Eliminated added salt and sugar in my diet. I did this early last year. My BP dropped from 130/80 range to 115/70 range.

    3. Excercise. My main form of excercise has been walking (steps). Two problems with this; first I would like to add some strength/balance/stretching into my routine, and second I do a lot of my walking during those late night sessions I am trying to eliminate (see #1). Still working on this.

    4. Tracking. Need to be more dedicated to food and excercise tracking. This has proven to be successful in helping me to lose weight in the past. How to stay motivated is the problem.

    5. Lifestyle. I do not want my life revolving around my next meal, my next excercise session, my cal count, my step count, etc. In other words, I dont want my life dominated by losing 10 pounds. It is important but not all there is. Hard to figure this one out but I am working on it.

Well that is where I am at with my goals for the year. I just need some things to figure out and flesh out the details. Like I said, I do want to just make some vague plans but rather give myself some true goals to achieve. I have all year! 🙃 👍🏻

Sorry for such a long winded answer.

Went to yoga tonight and it was great. Except I have been having this pain that is really bothering me. I've googled it and I think it might be piriformis syndrome but I don't know. I'm going to call a physical therapist tomorrow to see if I can get an appointment or find out if I need a referral. Whenever I tell my regular doc about things like this I just get a shrug and "you are over 40 now" - so frustrating. Worried I am going to injure myself more if I don't figure this out.
