Hi team!
I'm Courtney in Québec Canada, a federal public servant who, as of this morning, is no longer on strike! Picketing in the cold and rain hasn't been good for my health, and I'm definitely feeling run down as a result. Poor snacking choices and avoiding drinking water to limit the need to use porta-potties have added up over the past two weeks as well and I've moved up out of what used to be the top of my maintenance range. My real goal is to lose another 20lbs and increase my cardio level for the sports I participate in.
My biggest hurdles are portion sizes with food. If it's on my plate, I'm going to eat it.
I just had a sandwich for lunch and half way through I was satisfied and no longer hungry, but it was already in front of me, so I ate it all. It's those little things that consistently stop me from reaching my goal. Mindful eating is not one of my strengths.
I have to find a way to change that mindset because it's inevitable that I will face an injury at some point which will limit my physical activity, and I will balloon back to my top weight if I don't adjust my caloric intake accordingly. I've done it before and I see it consistently in the other women in my family.
@ashleycarole86 for the step challenge, are you supposed to try to remove the steps that you do while carrying out other exercise, or is the other exercise converted to a step' supplement' only based on the intensity?
I've never joined the step challenge as I don't trust the accuracy of my device (I get congratulatory notifications on my step climbing while driving my car on a bumpy road) but I've always been curious how I would report it properly since I don't tend to walk much unless it's while carrying rocks up and down the stairs and around our yard, or while participating in an exercise class.

Happy Monday all!
Woke up at 5:30 am after staying up kind of late to watch Succession. I cannot believe the show is ending this season! Anyone else watch it??
I finished day one of Sydney’s Summertime Fine 3.0 this morning and it was a great way to start the program. Just 64 workouts to go for the next three months! I also did a nice stretch video after the workout which I think is going to be key as I ramp up my exercise to 6 days a week instead of 4-5 days.
I’ve pre-logged all my main meals, though I do still have some room for a snack later if I feel I want one. I’m planning on going to bed at a reasonable hour tonight so that I’m not too tired.
We have a plasterer coming this week to finally patch the holes the electricians had to drill when they redid the electrical in our house. That means I can finally repaint in the colors I want and brighten up the place. I’m so excited to get that started.6 -
@ashleycarole86 could I also be added to the step challenge please? Goal 9000 steps. Thank you!2

I'm so sorry to be late with the Habit Tracker for May! Here it is - it is open for anyone to use.
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10889840/habit-tracker-may-2023#latest
This is a simple and user-friendly way to track those small habits that add up to success. Go for it!

First of all, glad the strike is over. Hopefully you and your fellow union members feel satisfied with the deal.
I'd say the biggest thing for me is to ensure that you're not double counting without making it too onerous so that it's still fun to participate. So for example, if someone walks, that's already included in the steps, so there is nothing more for those minutes. However, if you jog, as that is steps but at a higher intensity, there is a supplement added for those minutes. Same with Liselyn's snowshoeing... it was basically a supplemental add on I was putting on intensity minutes since the movement itself was already counted in the steps.
For activities that don't register as steps on your watch (or shouldn't), it's got to be individual discretion. For example, when I ride on my bike, I wear my watch, but it doesn't count steps while I'm moving on it, so there's no risk of double count and I get full biking minutes for that. If I rode a horse and it gave me steps cause it thought the bouncing was walking, then I'd remove those steps or leave them but wouldn't count the minutes (or something to that effect). If I were to get on an elliptical and I thought it would count as steps, I might take my watch off so it didn't double count (or just leave it as steps and forget my supplement).
I am lucky that most of my activities don't register as steps if I'm counting the activity minutes and I don't seem to have issues with phantom steps recording when I'm not walking. At the end of the day, I want it to be set up for you in a way that motivates, while staying as accurate as possible for the team stats.
It's also okay to just track non-steps if you'd rather - it would be under-reported overall but if that pushed you to exercise more in different ways, go for more walks, etc. then I think that's the important thing.
Got it @project_shan and @strong_fit_ells .. welcome aboard and happy stepping!
I had a big step day today (over 13K already) and I still hope to get on the bike.. I do love really active days like this
And wow @micki48 you must be exhausted.. wonderful result with those steps doing all that moving!

Sylvia here in Massachusetts, 52, single, no kids, caregiver for my old dad, have been with Waistaways since Jan 2020 - did great the first year and got to my weight goal but has crept up ever since (as the cycle has gone my whole life). Family health stressors, full time office job on top of the caregiving are not helping me get back to where I want to be....considered giving May a complete miss on Waistaways- then thought well..on support, but now I'd like to just be thrown in on the regular team…
My weight loss journey has been similar to many here with ups and downs over the years; pre and post 2 babies; 2 divorces; death of a dear friend; moving; job changes, etc. I’m thankful for generally good health, a new job, and summer on the horizon.
I’ll start changing my diet this month to a more lacto-ovo-vegetarian (& fish) style and plan to get more walking in, too. Next step: get my OH to support these changes and help me get back to my program of health and maybe even lose some weight!
I’ll let you know how things go.
Peace to you all, WAs. Nigh-night!

hey everyone, happy monday! I hope everyone was able to find something great in their day today.
I love mondays and always feel the most motivated on them. sooo, my day started off great despite waking up an hour late. I managed to make time for my devotionals and prayer before working a 10hr shift, and somewhere along the day decided to try walking 3mi after work. made it to 3.07mi in 59 min, at an average pace of 19’19”. I tried throwing a little jog in there but running/jogging feels weird for my body to do lol. does anyone have any tips/suggestions on how to actually get your body going? 😂
also, I logged in my meals for today and I actually kinda like it bc it’s forcing me to be aware of what I’m eating and makes me want to be more mindful of what I’m putting in my body. oh and I bought a new book today, I’ll start again Monday by Lisa TerKeurst, and it’s such a great read so far. has anyone else read it?
@ashleycarole86 can you please add me to the steps challenge as well for a goal of 10k?7 -
@honeygldchelly
You bet - got you down! Welcome aboard
Haven't heard of that book but by the title alone it sounds like it would be a very fitting read.2 -

Hi all I"m Joann. I"m a 42 year old RN working full time in as a public health nurse. I'm married with a 8 year old daughter and 11 month old German Shepard dog. I'm also taking a masters level course about to complete a Masters Certificate by the end of June. I've always been active but have always had binge eating episodes that sabotage my progress and want to get more habits down that addresses the perfection idea of what my diet should be.
@eggfreak I'm rooting for you. you can't keep all your balls up in the air but maybe maintenance and just treading water is success too.
@strong_fit_ells nice to see you are making some positive changes for yourself.
Feel like my weight is still all over the place but I'm happy with my excersize and keeping with my habits. Go Oilers Go8 -
Hi all, I'm Katie, 35, living in the UK with my husband and our two cats. I have struggled with my weight for the better part of 15 years, having a couple of significant losses during that time and then piling it all on again for various reasons. I am quite possibly my heaviest ever weight - definitely up there.
My current struggles are stress related. Long story short, we were supposed to be starting a family and instead we're in couples therapy. We're not on the rocks or anything, but we're not where either of us want to be, either. That's over 3 months of relationship-stress, then work has been kicking my backside for what feels like even longer, but it's been especially bad the past month. Add in the weather so I've spent less time outside (either running or at the allotment) and it doesn't feel too surprising that I went back to eating whatever, whenever.
Still, muesli for breakfast every day, and smaller lunches, are two things that have stuck from my dietician appointments. I have another session with the dietician on Thursday, so will be looking for a third thing. I've been to the PT this morning and had a very good weightlifting session. Combined with lots of effort at the allotment the past two days, I am satisfyingly sore. I'm in a good mood from training, and will cling on to that for dear life because happy-me makes healthier choices.6 -
@DD265 I applaud you and your husband for having the strength to acknowledge a tune up in the form of therapy would be helpful. Sorry to hear that life stress in general is hitting its peak.4

DianaGetsFit512 wrote: »I’m participating in a step bet this month so I hope to have that as a motivator as my goal is pretty steep and I don’t get as many steps while cycling on my peloton ( if anyone has any tips for that let me know)
Train yourself to take smaller steps when walking! If Mom and I go out somewhere, she'll hit 10k steps and I'm still somewhere around 5k due to having a much longer stride. So not fairThe good habits I had have prevented me from following suit so far, but I'm gaining weight, my body hurts, and my energy is super low.
The lack of energy is a killer, isn't it? I know that moving more will make me feel better and more energetic, but I often don't feel like I have the energy to get started, so it becomes a vicious cycle.ashleycarole86 wrote: »But being here makes a difference, and I'm a much healthier happier version of me even now, while I deal with my current weight situation and assess my path forward from here.
I think the bit I've bolded is key here. Even if you feel like you've taken a step backwards, current-you is so much further ahead than old-you - and still inspiring....considered giving May a complete miss on Waistaways- then thought well..on support, but now I'd like to just be thrown in on the regular team. Just reading thru the last of the April posts inspires me....we all have our own stressors to deal with, and we just have to plow through.
As somebody regularly in-the-red, I still find being part of the team valuable. I have no other use for MFP these days, but the team is important to me.
Best wishes for your brother, too, I hope they can do somethingI moved to a new home Saturday.
How is it, are you pleased with your new home?strong_fit_ells wrote: »I feel like my life is in really good place at the moment. My current landlady is selling the house we live in and my current boss is buying it so we can live here.
I am so blessed and grateful to him.
That really is an amazing thing, and it sounds like you're channelling that energy in the right direction too.I'm starting the Metabolic Renewal program. Anyone done it?
I hadn't heard of it before this. I'd be interested to know how you get on with it.PlaneMonkey wrote: »My biggest hurdles are portion sizes with food. If it's on my plate, I'm going to eat it.
Yep. We went to Greggs (bakery - basically the epitome of UK junk food!) on Sunday and I got chicken goujons and potato wedges. You literally can't get fruit/veg/side salad there. I'd previously agreed with dietician to have half and save half - the amount of willpower it took was immense. But I was satisfied, even though I was sure I'd want it all. What usually works for me is 'I can have the rest in X minutes if I still want it' - even down to setting a timer. Future-me is usually not bothered.wishfuljune wrote: »We have a plasterer coming this week to finally patch the holes the electricians had to drill when they redid the electrical in our house. I haven't heard of it, will add it to my reading list though. I'm currently switching between Unf*ck Your Habitat and the Dreamers series by David Eddings.cleaneater80 wrote: »I've always been active but have always had binge eating episodes that sabotage my progress and want to get more habits down that addresses the perfection idea of what my diet should be.
As somebody who also binge eats - what habits are you thinking of? I'm considering giving up solid chocolate because I am getting through a lot of it at the moment. I used to get chocolate mousses which were lower in calories and still provided a really strong 'hit', although the dietician would argue they still spike my blood sugar.5 -

Hey All!
I'm Ashley and I'm a native Ohioan who has been living in Montana (just outside of Glacier National Park) since Aug '20. I'm a registered dietitian and health coach at the IHS for the Blackfeet tribe. I've been a yoga and HIIT teacher since '15 and am currently working on fending off the office-chair spread. My job is really sedentary, so it's a challenge to get steps/activity in.
However, I'm currently focused on building muscle and improving my running with the hopes of doing the Glacier Half Marathon next month. It's a huge challenge for me because I have hEDS so I have to be really careful. I just came off of 2 weeks of no walking/running due to an injury, but I tested the waters yesterday and it seemed good.
I'm also married to a disabled combat vet, mom to an (almost) 16-year old, and (my favorite part), am a dog mom to a year old Alusky and a cat mom of 5. The weather has finally got it's act together around here and warmed up, so once the snow melts, we'll finally be able to hit the trails!
As a side note - we are closing on our other house today! We've been paying for our home in Ohio for the last 2.5 years and decided it was time to unload it. It went super fast and now we'll be able to focus on updating our current home!
Steps:
Monday: 5234 steps + 36mins lifting + 20km biking
Tuesday: 5282 steps + 20km biking
Wednesday: 6396 steps + 20km biking
Thursday: 4708 step + 22km biking
Friday: 3563 steps + 20km biking
Saturday: 4123 steps + 50 mins yoga
Sunday: 3395 steps + 32 mins yoga7 -
It's Tuesday evening here, and I'm feeling tired. I love all your news about houses and half marathons and negotiating portions and exercise. I did my usual on-the-road overeating on the way home from my dad's AGAIN today - but now I am just staying home for a while! Enough bouncing all over the place. Tonight good sleep, tomorrow lots of outdoors and good working out and wild biking in the evening. I don't have a Peloton, but I'm there with you Pelo People in spirit!!
Wednesday we're back to weigh-ins! We have quite a wonderful Wednesday group

@DD265 I haven’t figured out the whole house, but I want a nice fern green accent wall on the same side as our white and brass fireplace in our living room, and then a nice warm beige color on the other three walls. We’ll carry the beige into the foyer, and then I have found this amazing pear wallpaper that I want to use in my dining room. My husband and I are debating on a mural wall instead of all four so we’ll see what we decide to do.5

Had a major snack craving tonight...
Dill pickles, am I right?
Like free.. and so low cal!
Not great on the sodium...but man that hit the spot.
I also rode the Peloton tonight. Happy with how my week is going.
@MoonlitMuse
You blew up the bike this week! Nice5 -
Hi WaistAways, sorry for delay posting my intro on this month's thread!
One of my goals this month is to post here a little more often! My second goal is to be consistent with my personal training sessions and hopefully be lifting a bit more weight by the end of May!
I'm Jess, 34, and I live on the UK South Coast so I love spending time walking on our pebbly beaches! Also love art, music, reading, cooking, video games (very excited about the new Zelda game coming out in a couple of weeks!)
I've been overweight my whole life and obese for some of it... I'm about as light as I've ever been at the moment (85kg) which feels good, but I've got a way to go to be a healthy weight.
I see a personal trainer which is helping me a lot to learn how to move my body and how to strength train. I get a lot of low back pain so strengthening my core helps me with that. I like to do pilates/ yoga type exercises too, and I swim/ go to the gym when I can.
I do struggle a bit with motivation and depression so having support of others is really helpful. I'm also trying to get pregnant and have been having fertility treatments, so I'm hoping that weight loss will help with that.
Looking forward to keeping up with you all and the mutual support!8 -

Weigh in Day: Wednesday

Making (somewhat) better food choices, logging my food (mostly), and working out 5 days a week. I had a big NSV this week. After years and YEARS of self image issues, while standing in front of my bathroom mirror in my workout tank and shorts, I thought to myself "wow... you don't look too bad for 48 years old!" And that's huge compliment compared to what I'm usually saying to myself! LOL!9 -

I am not giving up, I'm here. I am having some definite troubles though. I am binge eating and getting in the moods where I just do not care. I am having some pretty severe nerve pain in both elbows, with the left being significantly worse, it jolts if I try to pull, twist or lift anything, but I can put all my weight on it and pushing doesn't bother it. They don't think it's the Ulnar nerve, because it's in both... So I am at a loss as to what to do now. I am basically told to deal with it. I hate doctors and the fact that they treat women so differently when it comes to this stuff, My husband will get gold star treatment when he has a joint or nerve issue, but apparently mine is all in my head... Okay enough of that rant. I am going to try acupuncture later this month, so maybe she can help, and we can skip stupid doctors all together.
Hi all, I'm Vikki , 51, Baltimore, MD - Married- 3 kids but an empty nester. I work full time, and blah, blah, blah, I probably live the most boring life ever, but I need to work hard to get myself out of this funk... We have Pickleball lessons on sunday.. ( That should help my elbows )
We did join a pool/ tennis club for the summer, so I am hoping to get some activity, and be a little more social this summer, even if I am a little chubby doing it...
My goal for May is to simply be present, work on my mental health, and no binge eating... Thinking about therapy, but haven't pulled that trigger yet, with the husband working out of town 4 days a week, and 2 dogs to take care off, I feel bad, not being home, and to be honest, the phone, and video therapy just doesn't appeal to me for some reason...
Today, I will do 15 min of yoga.
Have a wonderful day !8 -
Weigh in day: Wednesday

(Granted I changed my weigh in day from Friday to Wednesday, but I’ll take the positive where I can get it lol)6 -
@ashleycarole There was a Garmin badge to be won Although it did actually help to keep me moving while still keeping weight off my knee, so it's a win-win!
Also - I totally feel you on the pickle cravings! That or seaweed snacks are my go-to for when I want something salty, although I made a batch of comeback crackers and seriously look forward to a few of those when I get home in the evening!
@alydanbeads That's a great NSV! A shift in our mindset/perception is such an amazing thing after a lifetime of the opposite
@Gidgitgoescrzy I think pain ups the cortisol levels, which definitely impact mood and appetite. It sucks to hear about yet another failure in our medical system. It's really crazy how gender perceptions can really impact provider's opinions and it's not fair. I hope you're able to find someone who is able to help you! It kinda-sounds like something similar to what my dad experienced, and he had to have some nerves in his arm surgically rerouted (for lack of a better description). I hope you road to pain relief doesn't involve those extremes!
As for me, this week is off to a decent start. I've stuck with activity M/T, and I've been packing smaller portions for lunch (they are dinner leftovers, so instead of taking the whole extra serving, I'm taking half-ish and giving the rest to my kiddo...who is an almost 16-year-old-boy who looks like Woody from Toy Story...so he needs the extra kcals lol).
The problem I'm running into is that I want to walk a few miles outside after dinner since a. I'm stuck in my office all day like a mushroom and want to get outside b. The weather is finally nice and c. I want to experiment and see if a little extra activity can get things moving in the right direction. However, my hubs does everything in his power to convince me not to go and has been succeeding thus far. I don't think I'll be able to convince him to go with me, so I may just have to put my foot down and walk out the door. Wish me luck lol6 -
This is a beautiful first week of May so far!
I have not had such a great one food-drink-healthy habits-wise. Today that turns around. Bring on the pickles! For those of you not in on the old pickle story, ages ago I remembered that one way to curb cravings for sweet stuff is to eat something sour. Dill pickles also have the advantage of being crispy, so they can help a craving for crispy salty things too. It really works! Wanting ice cream? Have a pickle - and you don't even need to be pregnant Yes, if you have problems with sodium, they are not ideal, but surely better than chips and crisps...5 -
Happy Wed, all. I'm having a good week so far. I've been getting a lot more steps than usual. I've been making myself go for walks in the evening. The weather has really helped with that. I've also kept up with logging! My travel bloat is dissipating so I'm hopeful for a good number next week.6

Weigh in day tomorrow already! Wow.
I weighed in early last week and had a big spike after my trip to Manitoba. I took the weekend off tracking (and a bit of the vacay weight came off), but I've been focused since Monday.
I've rode the Peloton three days in a row. It feels good to make a commitment and to stick to it.

No loss this week but I'm really happy all the same as I was expecting a gain due to last week's weigh-in being unexpectedly low (whoosh or dehydration?) but I'm confident in this weigh in being 'true' this week as I have been putting in the effort with sticking to my calorie target and step goal. 9.5 miles walked yesterday, which is the furthest I've walked in a few years!6 -

I couldn't keep hold of my happy mindset, but I still tried really hard to have a healthier day yesterday including a run before work. About 8.30pm I gave in to my craving for chocolate, though I probably had what the dietician would consider 2 portions (as that is what was left) so not terrible. Had hoped my weight would be down, but 2 good days don't outweigh the other 5, and the increased exercise can also increase water retention of course.
Today I'm just trying get through - very tired. Have my dietician appointment this afternoon.7
