    Fun Fact:
    NATIONAL COMPLIMENT DAY
National Compliment Day on January 24th offers a wonderful way to brighten someone's day or to give credit for a job well done! Give an extra compliment annually on January 24th and any time one is deserved.
    #NationalComplimentDay
A compliment has a powerful effect. It can instill confidence in a child, or validate someone's hard work. A compliment not only improves the receiver's mood, but it also says something about the giver. It tells them you noticed. Whether we recognize someone's achievement or their classic style, a compliment can go a long way.
To give a great compliment, first be sincere. People have a way of knowing when we are fake. If you don't mean it, it's worse than getting a thoughtless birthday gift.
Complimenting character versus a new haircut are different rewards. The first says you respect the person and the other tells them you paid attention. Sometimes the receiver needs to hear one or the other, or both.
Human beings like to be unique, original. Strive to give a compliment about what makes a person stand out above the rest. Take the time to reflect on what you admire about the person.
HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL COMPLIMENT DAY
Make sure to compliment someone. Share the compliments you receive that make your day. Do they improve your day? Make a list of different ways to give a compliment and use #NationalComplimentDay to post on social media.
Educators, visit the National Day Calendar® Classroom for a lesson surrounding National Compliment Day.
    NATIONAL COMPLIMENT DAY HISTORY
Kathy Chamberlin of Hopkinton, NH and Debby Hoffman of Concord, NH created National Compliment Day in 1998.
    Compliment FAQ
    Q. What's the difference between compliment and complement?
    A. Compliment is used as a noun or verb to describe praise or admiration. "I received a compliment for my quilting skills." "The teacher complimented Lori on her spelling."
Complement has multiple meanings. First, it can be a noun or verb used to describe how one or more things improve another. For example, "The sunshine was a perfect complement for the event." Or, "The wine complemented the steak." Another meaning for the word "complement" is to describe a number or quantity, especially a complete group or set of something. "We hosted an entire complement of guests this weekend."
    Q. Can you compliment someone too much?
    A. Yes. A compliment is like salt and pepper; use it only enough to season the moment but not so much that you make it all about the compliment.

    NATIONAL OPPOSITE DAY
Day Opposite National on January 25th celebrates a fun day of switcher-roos. What better way than to not celebrate? We don't really mean that, or do we?
    #NationalOppositeDay
Good morning, or is it good night? Hello, or is it goodbye? I am cold, or am I hot?
The aim of the day is to have fun all day long saying exactly the opposite of what you really mean. This day has kids rejoicing everywhere. It is also a great day for adults to play along and break out of the winter blues. Maybe we should have dinner for breakfast and breakfast for dinner!
Most sources say that Opposite Day is always observed on January 25th while other sources say it is celebrated by some on January 7th. It is also believed to be celebrated by a group of people on the 25th of each month of the year.
Sponge Bob Square Pants even got into the act, with an episode containing the whimsical nature of this day.
HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL OPPOSITE DAY

Experiment with opposite flavors. Taste sour and sweet, spicy and bland. What's the opposite of bitter?
Play with opposite sounds. Whisper then shout. Cry then laugh.
Do the opposite of what you mean and use #NationalOppositeDay to post on social media.
Educators, visit the National Day Calendar® Classroom for projects and ideas surrounding the National Days.
    NATIONAL OPPOSITE DAY HISTORY
While National Day Calendar continues researching the origins of this day, we did discover one interesting reference dating back to President Calvin Coolidge in the 1920s. In the 1928 election, Coolidge made a statement to the press announcing, “I do not choose to run." That statement spurred a debate and left everyone wondering if he really meant the opposite.
    Opposite FAQ
    Q. What is a contranym?
    A. A contranym is a word that has multiple meanings that contradict each other or are opposites. For example, the word "left" can mean a person or thing that remains. "There are three people left in the office." It can also mean a person or thing that no longer remains. "Everyone else left the office for the day."
    Q. If "left" is the opposite of "right," what is the opposite of "ambidextrous"?
    A. "Ambidextrous" means the ability to use both the right and left equally well. Its opposite is "ambilevous" which means the equally poor ability to perform tasks with both hands.

@Gouldsgranite what a terrific idea! Oh how cool! Exercise and fun rolled into once! I love this! Since when I go to my family reunion (not until July 2026) I've asked to be in the "group room" (lolol those of us "gals who either spouses will not attend or are at this time single) I think the big room holds 10-12 of us. Oh I WANT that room! I was offered one on the main floor, but lololol this will be awesome! There are so many fun things to do down there! I currently can't do stairs. Today I tried and was able to do 3. That was enough. I'll slowly build myself up. Hopefully, my body will cooperate. Janey, we both have goals! Woohoo

This day is a time to show your spouse that you care and appreciate all of the things that he or she does for you and the home.
Life gets busy, and we can often take for granted how our spouse improves our life. Pay a heartfelt thank you or compliment to the love of your life. Since the day is a non-gift giving day, spend time together and reconnect. Don't forget to say, "I love you."

    HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY
International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust
Holocaust Remembrance Day - Each year on January 27th, the world remembers one of the most horrific events in modern history. This tragic event is known as the Holocaust. The holocaust occurred during WWII when Nazi Germany killed millions of innocent victims. The day is also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day.
    #HolocaustRemembranceDay
Nazi Germany is one of the evilest regimes that ever existed. They persecuted and killed millions of people in just under four years. One group in particular that suffered were those of the Jewish faith. It is believed that six million Jews were killed during the Holocaust. The Nazis’ persecution of the Jews became a genocide.
Genocide occurs when those of a particular ethnic group is deliberately killed. However, the Nazis killed more than just Jews. Hundreds of thousands of other groups of people died under the evil regime. These included:
    7 million Soviet civilians
3 million Soviet prisoners of war
    1.8 million Polish civilians
    312,000 Serb civilians
Up to 250,000 people with disabilities
    Up to 250,000 Gypsies
    Around 1,900 Jehovah Witnesses
    Possibly thousands of homosexuals
Most Jews died in concentration camps. The most notorious concentration camp is Auschwitz, where approximately one million Jews died. While some of the Jews in the concentration camps died from disease or starvation, others died in the gas chambers. Other groups of people were forced to live in ghettos where they died of sickness or starvation. Still, others were rounded up, shot, and buried in mass graves.
Many famous books and movies have been produced about the holocaust. One of the most famous books is Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. The book is a real-life account of the two years that Anne Frank and her Dutch family hid from the Nazis. The family was discovered and deported to a concentration camp. Anne was 15 years old when she died in the camp from typhus. Other books include The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, and Born Survivors by Wendy Holden. Movies include Schindler’s List, The Reader, Denial, and The Devil’s Arithmetic.

There are many other works, such as theater productions, music, and poetry. Many of the works were created by victims and survivors of the holocaust. Other works commemorate the many heroes who helped save thousands of Jews and other victims from certain death.
HOW TO OBSERVE HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY
Many events are held throughout the world to commemorate this solemn day. The United Nations hosts a Holocaust memorial ceremony. The ceremony includes testimonies by Holocaust survivors, special music, and memorial prayers. There are also photographic exhibits, panel discussions, film screenings, and book signings. Sadly, there are some that try to deny the holocaust ever happened. This is one more reason to take part in this day. If the holocaust is forgotten or denied, it will be easier for history to repeat itself. Share this day on social media with #HolocaustRemembranceDay or #NeverForget.

    HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY HISTORY
On January 24, 2005, the United Nations General Assembly marked the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps. Later that year on November 1, the UN General Assembly designated January 27th as the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. It is also referred to as Holocaust Remembrance Day. It was on January 27th in 1945 that Soviet troops liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.

    DATA PRIVACY DAY
Data Privacy Day on January 28th reminds us each year to review how our data is used. It's an excellent opportunity to take stock and evaluate our personal cybersecurity.
    #DataPrivacyDay
Our personal data is collected and used through a variety of media and for numerous reasons. Part of the problem is most of the time, the people who have access to our data, don't need it. Additionally, it gets redistributed legally and illegally. Thanks to the internet, massive amounts of personal data can be easily distributed. While the information may be out there due to our own carelessness or privacy violations, there are steps you can take to protect yourself.
On any new device, set your privacy settings immediately. This includes new applications, social media, and programs.
Never use unsecured WiFi - especially for banking or shopping.
Check your bank and credit card statements regularly. When you spot anything questionable, contact the organization to stop payment on the purchase and cancel your card. In the same vein, check your credit report at least annually.
Keep your software up to date. Out-of-date software is vulnerable to hackers.
Never give personal information over the phone, email, or text.
Stop taking online quizzes that ask random questions about your childhood, children, tattoos, marriages, pets, and favorite foods. Each time you take one of these, people trying to access your data gather a little bit more information about you that allows them to steal your data or identity.
Use strong password phrases. The longer the password, the harder it is to break.
Do not save your passwords on your device.
Change passwords when your accounts may have been compromised or when you visit the dentist.
Use virus protection and a firewall.
HOW TO OBSERVE DATA PRIVACY DAY
Take steps to secure your digital devices.
Commit to learning how to protect yourself.
Maintain tech-savvy practices that protect you.
Share your tips, tricks, and experiences with others.

    DATA PRIVACY DAY HISTORY
The Council in Europe first initiated Data Privacy Day in 2007. Their mission grew to a global platform. In 2009, the United States House of Representatives recognized National Data Privacy Day. The United States Senate later recognized Data Privacy Day in 2010 and 2011. Since then, various groups and organizations continue supporting the observance annually.
    Data Privacy Day
    Q. Who needs to protect their data privacy?
    A. Everyone. Even if you don't use smartphones and computers, the companies and organizations you frequent do. And while they follow their own practices to protect client information, it's important to also protect yourself.

    NATIONAL PUZZLE DAY
Each year on January 29th, National Puzzle Day recognizes how exercising our brains with puzzles is just one of its many benefits.
    #NationalPuzzleDay
Whether it's a crossword, jigsaw, trivia, word searches, brain teasers or Sudoku, puzzles put our minds to work. Studies have found that when we work on a jigsaw puzzle, we use both sides of the brain. And spending time daily working on puzzles improves memory, cognitive function, and problem-solving skills.
Word searches and crossword puzzles have the obvious benefit of increasing vocabulary and language skills. Sudoku, a puzzle sequencing a set of numbers on a grid, exercises the brain as well. By testing memory and logical thinking, this puzzle stimulates the brain and can improve number skills.
Puzzles also offer social benefits. When we work on these brain teasers with someone, we improve our social interactions. Whether we join a group or play with our children, those interactions keep us socially active and teach our children social skills, too. Even working them quietly together provides an opportunity to focus the mind in a meditative way that isn't forced.
The bottom line is, puzzles stimulate the brain, keeping it active, and practicing its skills.
HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL PUZZLE DAY
Invite a friend to put a puzzle together with you.

    Puzzle FAQ
    Q. Can anyone participate in National Puzzle Day?
    A. Yes. There are so many different kinds of puzzles that anyone can celebrate this day.
    Q. When was the crossword puzzle first created?
    A. Journalist Arthur Wynne from Liverpool receives credit as the inventor of the word game we know today. He created what is considered the first known published crossword puzzle. The puzzle appeared in the December 21, 1913, edition of the New York World newspaper.
    Q. When was the first sudoku puzzle created?
    A. An 18th-century mathematician from Switzerland developed a game called Latin Squares. In 1895, these puzzles were published in French newspapers. Today’s version of Sudoku, however, is much more modern. Howard Garns from Connersville, Indiana, created the game we play today. Garns is a freelance puzzle inventor, and he called the game Number Place. In 1979, Number Place first appeared in the magazine “Dell Pencil Puzzles and Word Games.”
    Q. What image was on the first jigsaw puzzle?
    A. A British cartographer and engraver by the name of John Spilsbury invented the jigsaw puzzle when he glued a world map to a piece of wood. He cut out each country separately.

Good afternoon, hope you all are well. I really slept well last night. We got up yesterday at 7:30 am, left for Oklahoma at 9, got there at 1:30, (I called them telling the we were running late, Don was driving like we had all the time in the world). We saw the dr at 2:10. Left at 3, got home at 7. We took Kayla with us and she was very good, especially having to stay in the car while we were in the office. But great news is with this surgery Don is cancer free. He does have to go for 6 month check ups for 2 years but that is ok. Dr Patel gave us a name of a specialist in Oregon that is close to where we will be moving too. I think my blood pressure will go down now too. I am so grateful.
    Hugs and blessings

@ALL so sorry I POOFED for a bit. I went into the ER, they've taken care of the issue (Pretty fast!! In only 6 hours!) In turn many in the ER have so many viruses, of which I brought home with me, a 24 hours one!! NOT that I wanted one, but yeah. It'll take me a few to catch up with all on MFP.

@Patti241, I am so sorry he'll have to go to another place!! I sure hope they can find one close to where you are, is that even an option? I know much depends on the insurance we have. Rarely can one pay cash. We did for my Dad back in 2016, but it was one thousand a day cash. He could do that, but many can not. It helped us to keep him in the local community.
@Kurtize, OH HON!! WOOHOO!!! SO HAPPY to hear about Don doing better!!! OH THANKFULLY!!! HAPPY DANCE!! Be so nice for you to relocate OR!! HAPPY NEWS!!

    Fun Fact:
All information shared below is found on the national day calendar website.
    NATIONAL CROISSANT DAY
In the United States, National Croissant Day recognizes a flaky pastry enjoyed at every meal. Croissants are buttery, crescent-shaped rolls that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
    #NationalCroissantDay
The key to a perfect croissant is laminating the dough. You laminate the dough by folding butter into the mixture creating multiple thin layers of butter and dough. The result is a mouth-watering flaky crust and airy body.
Legend surrounds this pastry, as is often the case with a popular, worldly treat. What is known, is that crescent-shaped breads have been found around the world for ages. One of these was the Kipferl which originated in Austria as far back as the 13th century. This nonlaminated bread is more like a roll.
Credit for the croissant we know today is given to an Austrian military officer, August Zang. In 1839 he opened a Viennese bakery in Paris introducing France to Viennese baking techniques.
HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL CROISSANT DAY
Give your favorite baker a shout-out.
Treat your friends and coworkers to fresh-baked, warm croissants.

Offer a special in your bakery, restaurant, or store.
Try a new recipe. Make a soup or salad that goes well with croissants.

    NATIONAL CROISSANT DAY HISTORY
The earliest we've found the observance being celebrated is in 2006. National Day Calendar continues researching the origins of this buttery food holiday.
    Croissant FAQ
    Q. What tastes good on a croissant?
    A. Croissants can be both savory and sweet so there are many toppings and spreads that can be added to them. On the savory side of things, consider a chicken or crab salad and make a sandwich. Add some bean sprouts, a little parmesan cheese and you'll have the perfect lunch sandwich. Croissants also taste delicious with a little honey, jam or clotted cream. Of course, another good go-to for your croissant is smear of butter.
    Q. Are croissants a type of yeast bread?
    A. Yes. Croissant recipes include yeast.
    Q. How many calories are in a croissant?
    A. Croissants range in size but a medium croissant contains about 230 calories.

@gouldsgranite we will be moving to Florence Or, on the coast. We lived there before. My husband's brother has a home there and in CA, he can't travel much so asked if we would live in his house and take care of hit and just pay HOA, couldn't resist that offer. So we are heading back to OR.

Contacted the realtor to put house back on market, started back to packing and making lists to be sure we get everything done. It's a busy time. Called movers to find out what info they need and when. If everything keeps going right we will leave the last week in Feb.

It has been in the high 50's, rained a little. Other than that nothing new.
@Patti241 how is your friend doing.

    Hugs all
