  • Working on getting back in the rhythm. Used my new Garmin Forerunner 235 this morning to plan a workout, but it said it wasn't connected, phone said it was, etc., etc., until I'd almost run out of time for my run. When it works, I love it, but...... First self-planned workout on the watch. When I got to the fast strides in…
  • Getting here late, but trying to get some more miles in this month. Getting more each time, but travel, etc., are limiting the days I can run. More travel coming, so I'm rolling back my goal to 45. New Garmin Forerunner 235 on my wrist for the last week or so, and I'm excited to be checking it out. Running without carrying…
  • A post-September wrap-up for me. Didn't make my goal, but I'm claiming the hurricane exemption. Weekend place is still flooded, and likely will be until Thanksgiving. Two kids in college, with trips to visit them. I can run there, but not every day. October started slow, but I'm hopeful to get back above 40 miles.
  • Did our first football game at son's college. He's at the "other" college from the one wife and I attended, and daughter attends, so it was all new. 14 hours of R/T driving and a stop to check on the flooded weekend place, so no running for the long weekend. Not much chance of making my 50 mile goal, but I'm calling for a…
  • Struggling to get back in my rhythm, but did get in a few miles yesterday; over halfway to goal, but many to go if I'm to make it. Traveling to kid's college this weekend: 7 hours each way. There is no exercise or stretch that I've found that gets me through that without tremendous leg discomfort. Will still try to get…
  • I run 3-4X/week, went past my goal of 45 miles last month, and have a goal of 50 this month (hurricane notwithstanding). I'm part of the monthly running challenge group, but am not working towards marathons or the like, so could use some running partners whose goals and lives are more similar to mine. I'm currently in the…
  • Gentlemen: I'm 56, and sort of at a transition point in my battle. I'm 5'8" and started at 215, now down to 170 and holding. On the snack issue, I bought KIND bars (Amazon sells them by the dozen-box), and stashed them at home and work. No, it's not a doughnut, but the nuts and other fiber in them really helps hold off the…
  • For me, it took doing it long enough to make it all habits. So now the question is "why am I NOT getting up to run on Tuesday morning....?" MFP gets easier after a couple of months, and becomes a habit. Same with the exercises. Just make sure you're trying to have fun and make it something you can sustain for years. For…
  • I'm three years into my transformation. Started at 215 lbs, now at 170, and now just focused on staying here and keeping fit. Using MFP, I started walking aggressively, which worked dramatically for a while. Then I started "running;" a lot of walking and a bit of running, which worked for a while. Now I'm running 3-4 times…
  • Nothing but awe for someone that can do time on a dreadmill. There have been a lot of times when I should have, but starting at about 45 seconds, I'm thinking JEEZUS, how long have I been at this? Plus, it REALLY helps my motivation when I'm halfway through a run to be 2 miles from the house, if you know what I mean!
  • Still doing post-hurricane cleanup: yard work, and cleaning the boat that was in the flood. I also walked several miles, which I don't count in my running tally. I'll probably still make my monthly target, but it's not the focus it was two weeks ago. Right now, I watch the river gauge at the St. Johns River bridge every…
  • No time to catch up with the 8 pages of posts since I checked in. We're fine, and nothing affected us here that sweat and Advil can't address. But we have a place on the St. Johns River in the town of Astor, where record flooding is taking place. When we went on Tuesday to get the boat out, water was about 20" deep in the…
  • Got restless pre-storm, so got just a little running in this a.m. Was raining after the first few minutes, but all it did was make it more humid. We are hunkered down, and as prepared as we think we need to be. Our forecast is better than it was two days ago. The first bands of Irma are arriving, and the storm will be here…
  • We're in Port St. Lucie; about 45 mins north of West Palm. No, we're not evacuating, and yes, I know all the reasons to. I have parents in assisted living nearby, and we're in a pretty good location. We got direct hits (3 weeks apart) from Frances and Jeanne, and we think we're better off staying put. Also, I am pushing…
  • Hard to focus on anything else right now.
  • Yesterday's "chain saw massacre" of hurricane prep wore me out, and covered me with countless nicks and scrapes from tree-climbing, limb-hauling and just general clumsiness. MapMyRun's plan for me this morning was intervals, and I did them, but there was more walking than usual. Even with that, the intervals got my average…
  • It makes the running playlists, but there's one that's based on what you've been listening to. And if you search the playlists, others have made lists for 160, 165 and 170 BPM.
  • Decided to skip the gym this morning and relax on the beach a little longer after my morning walk. Then I checked the updated hurricane Irma forecast. To quote Jimmy Buffett: "Squalls out on the Gulf Stream, big storm's comin' in soon... Testing the generator and trimming stuff away from the house. Another Floriday...
  • I listen to Spotify's running feature, or playlists, at the BPM pace I want to run at. I just need the help maintaining the pace. My plan was for 4 miles yesterday, so I did it. Seems that an app telling me to do something at 0530 is all it takes? Today is a rest day, but walked a leisurely couple of miles on the beach.…
  • First and foremost, my condolences to you, @7lenny7 for the loss of your MIL. Mine was dear to us, and her loss still resonates years later. This morning was a 12-minute test by MapMyRun, so the back third was pretty slow recovery time. Still not awful overall time by my measure, given the all-out 12 mins in the middle.…
  • Regarding parents with dementia... On the upside: my mother says I've lost weight every time I see her...
  • My sympathies @Sliedur . I started on this weight-loss/fitness venture in the middle of dealing with both parents' dementia. Taking over their lives, selling their home, relocating them, etc., etc. had me wondering how I was going to survive with my sanity. Ultimately, I decided what went in my mouth and what I did with my…
  • Bringing up the rear on September goals, I'm setting mine at 50 miles. Any newbies on here who want someone you can outrun, but isn't on the injured reserve list, I'm your man! Second month on this group, and pretty new to running altogether. Still looking for roughly-compatible MapMyRun team members. If you're in the…
  • Despite a lot of intervening family weirdness, I did manage to keep the run schedule this week. While I'm no longer really focused on weight loss, I had a breakthrough on that front this week, as I dipped under 170 for the first time in a long time (I'm 5'8", so I'm still not really thin). That puts me at about 45 lbs lost…
  • Re: stretching. I have two chronically tight spots that I stretch before running, and sometimes get some yoga in pre-run. I try to stretch afterwards, but let's call it one time in three; gotta get to work. But I consider the yoga on rest days critical to the running and other fitness. I just get really tight really fast.
  • Took a break from the string of 3-mile-mornings for an intervals session. Nothing extraordinary, except that my HR seems to have hit its stride, and I can get some distance in before I get into Zone 4. Hey; you take your wins where you find 'em, right? Probably one more run this month, but already 10% over goal. Best…
  • Still traveling, and once again limited to a cart path. The plan was to do more, and pretty sure I could have, but quit so I could shower for a breakfast meeting. Should still get a couple more runs in before month-end, so pleased to be exceeding goal. I wasn't going for speed today, but was fairly pleased to see that my…
  • Out sick for several days. The ailment was upper, but the treatment has affected my, um, lower. Im traveling, so ran the golf cart path. Had a shorter plan, but they added a lake since Google took their picture, so I had to double back and add some mileage. All's well, because the added distance put me over my first…
  • 26.3; overweight. I still have some flab left after weight loss, but I've also added inches to chest and legs. No, I don't know think the number tells me anything.
  • Usually, stepping out onto the porch in the morning feels energizing; it's nice to get out of the A/C and feel the warmth. But this morning was like a convection oven; the faint breeze felt like a heat-shrink gun. Still sticking with 5K until I feel like I've mastered it. Just one good run short of my first month's goal,…
