  • When I look in the mirror all I see is the 70 lbs left to lose (not the 107 already lost). When I looked in the mirror before this year, I never thought I looked as bad as I see in my "before" photos though. I didn't see the jowls, puffy cheeks, etc. I only noticed my excessive weight when I was trying on clothes, or…
  • I know what you mean about trying to stay positive and don't have energy for yourself. I let myself fall into that trap most recently 3 years ago, and ended up gaining back weigh I'd lost the year before (~60lbs). I've had to make a decision this time: get healthy at the cost of potentially not getting other things done,…

  • Strength training would help prevent loss of muscle and/or strength while you are losing fat. I haven't started, but plan to after the 5K in a few weeks. There's a few good beginner routines that look like they'd be pretty quick and not as equipment intensive. If you do start, start with complex motions (not isolation…

  • Glad to hear that they are supporting your efforts more.
  • I don't know if this would have helped you with your last ride (with the variety of other factors), but in general I try to use heart rate and/or effort to guide my rides. I feel that I'm progressing if I can go further and faster while knowing that my body's effort has remained constant. I normally take one long ride per…
  • Please note that I make some assumptions for some of my answer below, please don't feel that I'm being crass I'm just trying to cover bases. The only family I have nearby is my wife, who is also eating healthier and exercising with me. However, I do have co-workers that feel like they should tempt me one or two times a…
  • I have a similar situation, and feel bad I can't help. I try to mention how good I feel when the opportunity arises (organically to the conversation). Unfortunately, he values his comfort/taste sensation more than his health. So I try to remember they're his choices (ones I made not too long ago), and when he mentions…

  • I wouldn't worry too much about one week, especially if you've been losing well before. If it helps these are some of the items that helped me to learn/hear/have reinforced. I've noticed when I exercise quite a bit my weight doesn't drop as much (especially if I exercise the day or two before I weigh). I read something (on…

  • I don't know what stats you get out (RPM, speed, etc.), but I would think the closest exercise would be recumbent stationary bike.
  • I'd agree with the water weight, you'd have had to eat a very large amount of food to put on 2.6 lbs this week. Floating's good, I hear stress is afraid of water; also "we'll float on, good news is on the way."

  • They could know some don't like it when you notice, and not wanted to comment. Or maybe commenting on hair is code for I notice you look good, but don't know how to say it/can't put my finger on it.
  • It depends on the amount of weight lost. To me it's more awkward if people try not to mention it because they give funny looks trying to bite their tongue (or I imagine they do). I've lost about 96 pounds, it's as noticeable as if I'd died my hair bright pink; if someone hasn't seen me in that time they give a quick…
  • Goals:* Repair my bike (parts delivered Friday). * Set up weight bench in the garage. * Plan out weight lifting schedule/routine (leaning towards AllPro's routine). * Complete the next week of C25K; had backed off for a little while.

  • They're all the same unless it's beginning water weight. Keep doing what you've done and you'll keep seeing what you've seen. And +1 on the congratulations on meeting your goal.
  • I quote my original, then remove the parts at the beginning and end that put it in a quote block (the bracketed parts).
  • A few things that I have done, and will continue until I'm at my final weight: * Pull out the slightly smaller clothes that I've stored from years gone by (not the end size, but a size down) and hang them on the right side of my closet. * Break the weight goal down into much smaller targets including milestones (i.e. not…
  • Vacations scare me too, but they are fairly infrequent. One of the reasons I've started to like running is the ability to bring shoes and clothes almost anywhere, and get in a quick exercise. A lot tougher with a bicycle... Enjoy your vacation.
  • I've had to move my car seat forward because the fat in my lower back & butt isn't pushing my hips forward; much easier to change radio stations with my shoulders closer to the steering wheel. Also, without the added "lift" the arm rest is an appropriate height, so I don't use a spacer under my elbow anymore.
  • Well... Got the run/walks in this week and made them progressively harder. I haven't had time to look at/work on my bike (busy time at work). I think I know what the issue is, after some research.
  • Makes me think of the song Float On by Modest Mouse "Even if things end up a bit too heavy we'll all float on"
