  • Just like @poeciliareticulata, I used to have a non-HR Garmin Vivosmart (purple also) that I LOVED. Just like hers, mine went wonky. Even though the guarantee was over, the company kindly replaced it at no charge with the Vivosmart HR version. Again like @poeciliareticulata, I found it to be less attractive on my wimpy…
  • Did you recently move to Italy? Is it a permanent move? I hope you are enjoying yourself!
  • Name: Janice Occupation: University Research Professor Age: 53 Height: 5'4" Starting Weight: - beginning of my weight loss journey was 157 lbs in 2016 - as of today 130 lbs Challenge Goal Weight: (at the end of 12 weeks) 124 lbs Ultimate Goal Weight: (at the end of your weight loss journey) 120 lbs but 122 is likely more…
  • I’m smaller and far more fit at 53 than I was in my 20s and MANY people on this site would say the same sort of thing, including postmenopausal women. Our metabolisms slow with ageing, largely due to slower muscle synthesis, but very small amounts and certainly not enough to justify 10 lbs between 27 and 37yrs old. So,…
  • I want to reinforce the notion of just staying within your allotted calories as you get started. Keep it simple. Macros can confusing for someone who is starting. Again, keep it simple for now.
  • So many great comments here! My tip is far less inspirational or philosophical than some (thanks for posting those): For me, I need to work out (at home) every single day for at least 30 min. It’s just easier for me to find a small amount of time each day than scheduling 90 min or more 3-4x per week. Also, I exercise in…
  • First, congratulations on your engagement and upcoming wedding. In 2018, I’ll celebrate with my DH our 25th wedding anniversary, so my opinion is based on personal wedding/weight loss experience and decades of observation. Of course, your wedding day is special. But it is ONE DAY. Try not to get sucked into the hype of the…
  • Can you please elaborate? I fly several times per month and would like to understand what you mean. Thx
  • Depends on the snow density, ambient temperature, etc. If you sunk 6 inches and thinknyou are doing something wrong - take off the snowshoes and see how much more you sink. I’ll bet you will feel more certain about your snowshoe technique! I’m sure you’re fine ⛄️
  • Nutritionist friends??? Registered dietitians? Avoiding soy-based products for such reasons is unwarranted. If soy-based products caused weight gain and affected estrogen levels, the Japanese would be in trouble! Eating too much causes weight gain. Also, the biological effects of plant estrogenic-like molecules in humans…
  • I would totally start logging your food and exercise. It just helps in being mindful. For instance, you might just have one treat rather than two or split something with a friend instead of over-doing it. It all helps. Keep moving and you’ll feel better. Cycle - it’s Amsterdam!! While sightseeing/shopping, count your…
  • I work out first thing in the morning. I need some coffee first, just to get me going, but that's a morning thing - not an exercise thing.
  • I do 30 min home-based exercise per day, every day. It's not that much and easy to squeeze into my schedule. It takes a while to develop the notion that NOT working out just wrecks my day and feels crappy. Therefore, it it a priority for me to get in that 30 min.
  • I used a combined birth control pill for most of 30 years and was fine. Most recent was Yaz, but I never had perturbing side effects. In fact, any of us peri menopausal women use oral contraceptives to lessen unpleasant symptoms...
  • Of course pasta is not evil. Some people really desire more food volume, however, so lower calorie options are very helpful strategies for them. For some, a gigantic serving of veggie noodles is more satisfying than a much smaller volume of regular pasta. It is just fine to experiment with such ideas. When I was losing, I…
  • Ask your physician for full bloodwork pertaining to anemia, which can have a plethora of mechanisms. If you eat meat, however, your B12 intake should be ok. Absorbing B12 can be problematic if you have a gastric ulcer, so that's worth discussing, too.
  • Yes. Brush and floss your teeth.
  • But if you're full enough, just move on and stop thinking about the meal. It's over. You can try to improve next time.
  • When I was training for half marathons, my sister, who has been running for 30 years, gave me this great tip that might help you : Run your normal pace for 10 min then walk for about a minute ("10 and 1") then run another 10, and so on. This was a great way to improve my endurance and go further. Now if I want to run for…
  • I live in Québec City. There's tons here. What do you like and with whom are you traveling?
  • Me too. I have always eaten "clean". I just ate too much, too frequently.
  • Honestly, this is in your head. You have no idea what the woman was thinking. Maybe her face is always that way. You were self conscious. Keep going to the gym and don't worry about her.
  • This. You're at at healthy BMI and look good. You need to adjust your thinking to get away from your tendancy to binge, obsess and whatnot. Keep working out but eat to maintain. You can fiddle with macros for satiety and energy level but just aim not to gain.Reassess in a 3-4 months. Your psychology is more important at…
  • I love tossing cubed extra firm tofu with a mix of soy sauce or tamari (gluten-free) and toasted sesame oil. I'll often shake in a bit of oyster sauce and siracha but those are really not necessary. Just shake it all up with the tofu and I'll enjoy immensely in a salad (geeens, avocado, cucumber, a few chopped nuts) or…
  • Just a comment that might be helpful... A couple of years ago, when I was in my weight loss phase, someone on MPF wrote this about feeling hungry: "On a scale of 1-10, never get hungrier than a 3 or fuller than a 7." This concept helped me to accept that a little hunger is completely survivable. Conversely, overeating is…
  • I agree with @sbrant37 in that there are lots of factors in play. I lost ~30 lbs when I was 50 (I am now 52). I am 5'4" and went from 157 to 125 lbs. I have good muscle definition, too. But, I have a little loose skin (a bit of wrinkling at the thighs and a wee bit on top of my belly button). I think it's mostly due to my…
  • I travel a lot. My strategies include: - Exercise every day. It helps with jet lag and while on vacation, take the time to do a longer work out than usual. I like to run when I travel, since it gives me an opportunity to see the area, which is nice when I am on business travel and don't have time to be a tourist. - Walk or…
  • Not had any such problems. Maybe I'm too old. I also specify that I'll only friend other women.
  • Lactating is a huge energy output.
  • I weigh myself almost daily, which keeps my head in the game. I also do at least 30 min intense exercise every day at home. I find that short, daily home sessions are easier for me to do with regularity as opposed to 90 min workouts 3-4X per week at the gym. Those two things are important to keep me on track.
