  • 1200 calories intake + burning 500 per day seems...excessive? Maybe eat a little more on some days, like others have suggested.
  • OMG me too! I am not a big fan of most Ben & Jerry's flavors (too rich) but Cinnamon Buns is soooooo good.
  • The linked articles are good. The "thermostat" metaphor isn't a bad way of looking at things, though it's not a complete metaphor. The conclusions are highly suspect due to much thinner, anecdotal evidence.
  • My favorite way of preparing salmon (and my family loves it too!) is a simple soy sauce+garlic marinade for 10-20 minutes. Lower calories than teriyaki sauce! If you like fried fish, try rolling cod in eggs and italian bread crumbs and then baking it. Not as greasy, but still tasty.
  • What is your starting weight? Height? If you don't want to share that, what does MFP say is your predicted weight loss given activity? Don't start off with more than predicted weight loss of 1lb/week. 900/1000 calories is way too low unless you are like 4'5. Also: if you're just starting out, make sure you're weighing and…

  • Okay, I was hoping vinyl would be as good as hardwood but I think that might be some of the issue. There's no room in the bathroom and everything else is carpeted. The scale constantly gets kicked around because the kitchen is a highly trafficked area. I will try the board trick and see if that helps--and hopefully doesn't…
  • One thing I forgot to mention before: we always take measurements before breakfast. I hadn't actually heard about exercise throwing you off. We don't do anything too strenuous but we do exercise every other day. I'm mostly just worried that if day to day the fluctuations are as much as 4 lbs, week to week it could be even…
  • Just realized I forgot to post a confession. I don't really have anything original. But I, too, wash my gym clothes once a week or sometimes once every other week. (same schedule as regular clothes) I just hate doing extra laundry and I don't really sweat much. I figure that if I'm only going to be wearing them for an hour…
  • Also, don't buy into Amway MLM. Just look at its board of marketers
  • How far away do you two live? The easiest thing to do is just to do it with her--healthy meals, exercise, etc. That's what I do with my mom and she's about the same age. I even log meals that she can copy. But other than being an example, there's not much you can do if the problem is motivational.
  • Remember: if your bosses mean well, they will be supportive of your health decisions. They like being generous, and being clear about your lifestyle means they have more opportunities to be thoughtful. Forming healthy habits is always easier in a supportive environment, and that means being honest and open about wanting to…
  • Find which veggies they like and use them. Don't worry about the supposed health benefits of all the different vegetables (which do them no good if they don't eat them!) You can also try burying them in casseroles. Introduce new veggies slowly. Kids (especially toddlers) are pickier about veggies than adults because their…
  • I find I'm just fine on 1200 cal and I'm a sedentary asian shorty too (5'1). In fact, I'm regularly under between 100-200 (except on cheat day when I go over 500-700). MFP gives you "credit" for workouts so unless you have a job that puts you on your feet, leave it on "sedentary." Dunno about the carbs.
  • I log as honestly as I can. I need to know how much I'm setting myself back by and/or if I'll need an extra deficit during the week. Are you going to be at your friends' house or yours? If yours, just set up a scale by the kitchen and every time you get seconds of wings just weigh them on the scale and snap a pic with your…
  • I don't... in fact I drank an entire glass of hot Tang yesterday because I went over my protein and fat recommendations but had way more sugars "left." =P I don't believe in "cutting out" anything. Moderation and awareness are the key unless you really have a self-control/addiction problem.
  • Click their name and the "Add Friend" button should be on the next screen. You may have a stress problem in general. Is anything in particular a reliable food trigger? You may want to deal with it proactively. Also try to have healthy snacks on hand (I love roasted seaweed) for when the craving hits, then eat that before…

  • Hii I'm basically in your boat--only looking to lose 15 lbs (of which I've lost 3 so far) and get into healthy habits. But I'm working out with my mother who wants to lose a lot more... and it'll be great to finally have an exercise routine I can stick with.
  • If you really have no time, the best thing to work on is portion control--practice estimating portions and before you start eating, throw everything out of your portion in tupperware for later. Also, activity monitors (Fitbit, iPhone Health app, etc) are great especially for busy people. IME, healthy habits start with…
  • Congrats on taking that first step! I never dated anyone until I was 24, and one of my friends (who also happens to be gay) didn't get a steady until he was 28, 7 years after coming out! It can take some time for ppl sometimes to sort out the riff-raff and jerks. And remember: no matter what weight you are you have your…
