  • Have never been interested in switching to TDEE. I only have a dim understanding of it from posts on here, but I don't feel any need to investigate further. I lost weight using MFP, simply by eating the basic cals it gave me plus logging and eating exercise cals. And I've maintained for a year by doing the same…
  • Been running for 18 months, now on a steady three runs a week - 10k on Saturday and a couple of 5k's mid-week. Not aiming to set any records - I used to run years back but stopped due to a foot injury. Keeping the pace high enough to give a good burn but not pushing the training hard. Love love love running, it's an…
  • Don't beat yourself up for what's happened. The past is the past and all that matters is what you need to do. If I've understood right, you were 10lbs under goal and have gained 20, so you want to lose 10lbs? That's what you tell yourself. "Right, 10lbs to lose - that'll only take a couple of months, then I get my higher…
  • Ding ding ding! Log again for a week. Log everything, accurately - weighing all your food. Check you're really eating as few calories as you think.
  • Just read the article and wish I hadn't. ANGRY!! What a crock. Shock news: crash dieting screws up your system. Yet they don't talk about the unhealthy approach to weight loss - they make it sound as if ANYONE who loses weight will face the same issues. And the people in this competition were only taught to lose weight (in…
  • Ooh - what's NWCR?
  • Congrats to all the long-term maintainers - amazing achievements!! Maybe, one day, I'll stop logging or log less often. I'm not convinced though as I just love wine and chocolate too much and I'm not good at judging for myself whether I've had too much or not. ;)
  • I used WW for a year when it was Pro Points, then switched to MFP when I realised it was the same, but free! When I switched, I stuck to exactly the same daily diet. That diet used up my WW points, and it used up my MFP cals. Why was I paying £10 per month? I only did WW Online (not meetings). This was a few years ago and…
  • Something that can help is to think about what you ate before MFP. What a day's food looked like when you were gaining weight. Then diarise a day's food at maintenance calories. It will be less. While it's more calories than you're used to from losing, it's still going to be less than you used to eat, so you won't gain…

  • Keep logging everything, just as accurately as during weight loss. The only difference is you'll have more calories per day to eat.
  • First question: Are you losing weight, inches, or both? You might just be toning up and therefore maintaining weight but losing inches. Maintenance is designed to maintain your weight. If you're losing inches, I don't really have any suggestions other than stopping all that pesky exercise. ;) If you're still losing weight,…
  • Trainer is talking nonsense. I lost 20lbs last spring and then have maintained since by sticking to my cals. Throughout, I've had two nice chocolates from a box every evening with my coffee, a cereal bar every morning as a snack, and pizza every Wednesday night! The only thing if you eat too much sugary junk is that it can…
  • I didn't get a jump when I entered maintenance. Not everyone does. :)
  • When I reached maintenance I had 500 extra cals per day compared to when I was losing. I reached it by: 1. Increasing portions. Eg - breakfast went from 30g of cereal to 40g. Dinner carbs went from 75g dried weight of rice/pasta to 100g. I ate the same meals, just a bit more of them. 2. Having an extra snack or two per…
  • I used to weigh every few days when I was losing weight. I've been in maintenance since April and I weigh less frequently now. Still at least once every couple of weeks. I give myself +/-3lbs on my maintenance weight and don't sweat movements within that range. I don't bother weighing during my period any more as I know…
  • This time around, I started at 24.2 and I'm now 21.1 and maintaining (six years ago I did a much bigger loss, from overweight). At 24.2, I wasn't happy - too many wobbly bits. I have a large frame (broad shoulders, hips, elbows, etc!) and am hourglass-shaped. I'm very happy at my 21.1 shape. Under BMI I could lose another…
  • It was pretty painless for me! With a few lbs to go, I switched from "lose 1lb a week" to "lose 1/2lb a week", changing from 1,240 cals to 1,410. After losing those last few lbs, I then switched to "maintain weight", going from 1,410 to 1,710. Both times, I just increased to what it said. Using the inbetween 1/2lb loss…
  • Yep! I lost 20lbs and have maintained since, and throughout I've had pizza every Wednesday night, and two good quality chocolates from a box with my cup of coffee every evening. As others have said though, if you only eat junk food then you'll be famished, as you get so little food for your calories. If you're…
  • Thanks, all. Didn't know about reset before. I agree with Phrick though - it'd be cheating. If my internet connection had been broken then I'd do it, but I just totally forgot! Starting again and will celebrate in a year. I know the streak shouldn't be so important but it does motivate me. Now I'm in maintenance, it'd be…
  • I need to keep counting. I like chocolate and wine too much.
  • I put 'sedentary' as I do a desk job. I regular cycle and run, and log those as exercise and eat back the cals. I use apps to record my runs and rides so I know exactly how long I've done, and my speed (no guesstimates). I suppose I was actually slightly eating under as I didn't log general walking about during the day (eg…
  • They are myths - ignore them. You can save a few calories up during the week to go over a bit at the weekend. Before MFP, I used Weight Watchers which is exactly the same but with points instead of calories. With WW you are formally allowed to spread your points over the week. You can't go for longer than a week (ie you…
  • From someone who's been trying to conceive for four years and it's looking like it won't happen for us... You are unbelievably blessed. You are so, so lucky to have your little ones and another on the way. Yes, you'll gain weight. Yes, you're giving up your body for nine months plus breastfeeding time, then you'll have to…
  • What everyone else said. I went from MFP "lose 1lb per week" (1,240 cals) to "lose 1/2lb per week" (1,450 cals) to "maintain weight" (1,710 cals), rather than manually adjusting my cals. But you can do it quicker or faster. It's fine if you just want to switch straight to full maintenance cals, but people often…
  • What everyone else said. Total calories are what matters.
  • In short: no. You'll simply keep losing weight, which at some point will result in you being underweight. Being underweight can cause health problems, just like being overweight.
  • A week is nowhere near enough to judge!
  • I lost on 1,240 cals a day and now maintain on 1,710. With both losing and maintaining, I logged exercise and ate those extra cals, so most days I was having 1,500-1,800 to lose and now 2,000-2,300 to maintain. It was an extra 500 cals a day (almost) for me too, and it's working. If you're really nervous, add it in…
  • I log everything except water, black tea/coffee, diet soft drinks, and like you, the occasional lettuce leaf! Basically, anything with cals, gets logged.
  • I log just as accurately as when I was losing. The daily cal goal is different, but that's the only difference. It only takes me a few minutes each day on the phone app.
