  • Been there, done that. I had meniscus surgery 2 years ago and did pretty well, weight wise. Maybe gained about 5lbs. I also had 2 other surgeries in the course of the same year and with the second one (a cancer surgery) I gained 20lbs! It was hard several month recovery and the stress factor didn't help. Lots of tv and…
  • Just go to the gym, put your headphones on and kill your workout! When I moved last fall, I had some "new gym anxiety". Then I hurt myself - repeatedly (bruised shin bone, broke my hand, broke my tailbone and my old knee injuries came back). I was out for several months and nervous about being able to even complete a…
  • You can do this! Just work your way up slowly. It's not worth hurting yourself. Speaking from experience and lots of surgery (cancer and injury) comebacks. Remember: slow and steady wins the race.
  • Dammit...my post got cut off. I laughed at my Oncologist. I knew 2000k/day was too much! (They must have very short nutrition courses in med school.) I then consulted my GP and he told me 1000k/day during convalescing (Laying in bed for a week straight lifting forks and remotes only.) This was easy since I didn't want to…
  • I think a dietician is a good idea. I'm interested to hear what she recommends. I will give you my experience, but am not in any way saying this is what you should do. Just sharing my story. I had similar concerns last March with a big surgery. I gained a ton of weight with the surgery prior to that in August 2014 and was…
  • I'd ask your doctor for a physical therapy referral if you can afford it. The therapist can show you the exercises and give you lists, so you know exactly what you can do without aggravating your current situation. Make sure it's a good PT. not all are created equal! Swimming also sounds like an excellent exercise as well…
  • Here are my favs...some are crazy expensive, but worth it imo. Lululemon...an investment, bust lasts forever with proper care (I.e. No softener and no dryer - ever!) Lucy Athleta Old Navy (their stuff can be hit or miss, especially in regards to sizing) The Girls...great booty flattering pants that I've found at TJ Maxx) I…
  • Good job Gina! I went through my closet and got rid of everything that didn't fit, I didn't love or didn't look great on me. Now getting dressed is so much easier becuase I know no matter what I pull out of the closet it will fit and I will look/feel good in it.
  • I don't feel that 11 is too young to learn about CICO. I'm not necessarily a fan of an 11yo methodically counting calories as it may result in a lifelong eating disorder, BUT as a parent you can show him the difference. A packet of crisps has X calories vs a nutritious portion of lean meat/veggies on a plate. Remove all…
  • Sorry about the loss of your son, but kudos to you for wanting to be a healthy role model for your daughter. It will hopefully prevent her from also becoming overweight. (child obesity is a tragedy!) Living in your circumstances it seems that meal planning would be essential to a healthy lifestyle. If you've got your meals…
  • Sorry about your eczema, but 11 days isn't long. Maybe if you stick with it you'll see a long term improvement?? While I don't have eczema I do have very sensitive skin/rosacea and am a diligent product label reader. Might be good for you to clean out your bathroom/laundry/cleaning products and get rid of anything that…
  • It's hard! I took a break from mfp/working out and gained 12lbs back. While that alone is discouraging, what is now motivating me is the fact that when I don't work out and watch what I eat, I feel like crap! I don't sleep as well, I'm more prone to injury and I'm not as happy (endorphins are my happy pill!). Maybe instead…
  • I make time for me and have a husband who understands that I need to get away and workout. I'm a better mom when I work out regularly and I try to get my kids to exercise with me when I can't get to class - like on snow days we shovel together or have push up contests. But we also ski together, hike, walk, etc...
  • You can add me. I am a cancer survivor with bum with bum knees, but love being active. I'm just trying to stay fit and enjoy doing the activities I love...like skiing! You've got this!
  • I agree support is key! I'll add you.
  • You'll get there! Just keep working at it, but don't kill yourself in the process.
  • Keep up the good work!
  • Feel free to add me. I need more active friends!
  • First, start by what you consume. Make your calories count, so your body can thrive on what you do eat. As for exercise, you have to find what works for you, even if it is just walking to begin with. I had a series of surgeries the past 18months (2 more to go this year) that included some major recovery time. I started…
  • Hi Deb, I too am a breast cancer survivor. Diagnosed in July 2014. Feel free to add me. I can vouch that regular exercise and losing the extra weight has really helped curb the side effects of treatment. You can do this!
  • Congrats on being cancer free! I'm also a cancer survivor. Feel free to add me!
  • I got a pair of roverbeats F1 headphones st year off Amazon and love them. They never slipped off during cardio and I also wear them when shoveling snow. They're only $40, so won't break the bank.
  • While swimming is good, the stationary bike is also an option. I had knee surgery 18months ago. Gained a lot of weight due to the restriction in activity and also had another medical issue pop up that further limited my ability to exercise. I did quite a bit of PT and am now back at it. I can ski a whole day and my knee…
  • Another BC survivor here. Give yourself time and keep working on it. I lost the weight I gained after my mastectomy and was determined not to gain any back during reconstruction. I found that I actually love cardio (that's all I could do during recon) because the burn allows me to eat like a normal person. My motivation to…
  • It's most likely a band size issue. You were probably wearing too small of a band the first time around. Most women wear the wrong size bra. If you want a real fitting go to Nordstrom.
  • You can do this! I've had to deal with plenty of physical setbacks and weight gain this past year(knee injuries/cancer), but can honestly say that going to the gym 5-6x/week has done wonders for me physically and mentally. I'm in for the long haul if you want to add me.
  • Everybody passes gas in yoga. It's just a fact and natural occurrence. You're not the first and certainly won't be the last. Don't let it prevent you from trying it again. I personally have made "other" gaseous sounds and we all just cracked up. Embarrassing? Yes, but would it stop me from going again? no! I suggest…
  • Sounds like you're in better shape this time around. More muscle than fat.
  • You've had some good responses on how to deal with the food aspect, but if you're going to be on a large cruise line take advantage of the gym on the ship and burn some of the calories off. Many have fitness classes too. Daily exercise will help.
  • If it were me...I'd log an extra exercise session. Love Indian buffet!! Seriously though, meats/veggies in no sauce or tomato sauce. Stay away from creamy/cheesy stuff and no naan!
