Yes but exercise helps. Moderate exercise helps keep your insulin levels more constant. For me, I think it helps me keep hungry spells in check.

All kinds of people go to gyms, thin ones, fat ones, ones in good shape and ones that aren't. You will be comfortable with it quickly. Bring ear buds so you can plug in when you are doing cardio and listen to music or watch TV. You will have a good time, don't worry about it.

For me 1200 calories isn't possible. I bicycle commute 14 miles a day and walk at lunch. I need a 1000 calories to do that.
