Yeah, late stage PhD here too. Nontrad student at 45. It is so easy to comfort-eat with all the stress at school. But I find that exercise is the best way to reduce stress. I have been back to running regularly for two months, and it is starting to feel normal again.

More MFP friends! Weight maintenance and building core strength.

I am working full time and doing graduate school, plus two tween kids and an old farmhouse to maintain. My experience has been that the stress relief from exercising, especially after it becomes a habit, makes me more efficient in my other responsibilities. But I have to schedule it like an appointment. When I do not run,…

Not all who wander are lost. Count me in as one of the Fellowship.

Add me. That goes for OP and anyone visiting the thread.

Anyone can add me. I have an open diary. However, I am a 6' male runner, so some people find my calorie limits depressing.

Latest scientific wisdom is that sugar "out of context" can cause weight gain. Supposedly sugar in the context of fruits and such is fine, but sugar without natural fibers and proteins gets converted to fat by the liver. I do not want to spark the Sugar Debate, but it is something to try.

It is tough to get enough protein. It has to become a habit. Jerky is another useful protein source for snacking.

You should "taper" anyway, which means running much less, leading up to a race. It actually improves your performance. Taper should be 1 to 1.5 weeks, so a 2 week break should be fine.

Your body needs a certain amount of carbs, protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals. Too little of any of those, and your body will start craving. Fruit is a great source of carbs, vitamins, and minerals. So are veggies. If you eat a lot of processed foods, you get a lot of hidden sugar and you should eat more veggies…

I have a good friend with similar frustration. She was very fit, but could not exercise during cancer treatments and lost her conditioning. Also hypothyroid. Hang in there. It is hard, but doable.

Assuming your macros and calories are good, dark chocolate is healthy. So is coffee. Just because it is pleasurable does not make it unhealthy. In moderation.

Of it something you do the same every day, weigh it and log it for a couple days. After that, just log it. I am not as obsessive about weighing and logging exactly, and I have found through time that I need to stay about 10% under the MFP calorie goal to hit the corresponding weight loss. So, assuming MFP food and exercise…

I would not believe everything that you read on the internet. Any meal with a drink on the side will be a viscous fluid after chewing. The modern diet is skewed toward simple carbs. Eat more fiber and protein, and you will be fine.

I started running because everyone at the 5K my wife ran in was enjoying themselves. I kept running because 5K shirts made me feel healthy. Then I watched my older relatives fall apart from lack of exercise, and I started running more. Then I got sick and could not run and I realized I missed it. I got stressed by things…

It helps lose water weight, not fat, right before a weigh in. It is often done by wrestlers or biggest loser types. It is not pleasant, and dehydration is not healthy. It can be dangerous. If you are trying to lose weight long term, stick to weekly weigh ins at the same time of day.

I've been playing for years, since it was in beta. I am taking a break from it now because I was going too far on walks and runs and not taking rest days. It is that compelling. As long as you set a rule for yourself that you will not text and drive to play the game, then it is a huge motivator to exercise. I am in a rural…

Turkey meatloaf with a ton of basil. It is unbelievable. Or turkey burgers. Turkey curry. Anything you can make with ground cow you can make with turkey.

I am that guy. After my 12 mile run last week, MFP set my goal at 4000. Base is 2300 and I burned 1700. So yes, it is unfair that I get to eat ice cream. But I have no control over my metabolism or height. And I am eating at a deficit; I am as hungry as someone else eating at a deficit. It does not make the journey…

Kimchi omelette with sriracha sauce.

Even on days I shower twice, I only shampoo once. A good rinse with water is enough to flush out the salt from sweating.

Good whey powder is very low in lactose, which causes digestive issues in some people. Cheap whey protein can have more. If it is not working for you, switch brands.

Kimchi omelettes. Peanut butter on chocolate graham crackers. Green peppers and baked beans. Cheese curds in spicy applesauce. Garlic salt and hummus on hard boiled egg whites.

I do, but not all of them, usually. Looking back, I am usually about 1000 calories per week under my MFP target, and I am losing weight at the target rate. This suggests that either my counting calories is not exact enough or MFP overestimates calories burned in exercise. All told I am probably eating back 50% - 66% of my…

I assume the key info here is the recommendation comes from a lifting newsletter. So the logic is probably you need to limit fruit to make room in the diet for lots of extra protein. If you have a calorie goal, then macros are a zero sum game. I do not lift and hence do not limit fruit, because my choices are usually…

Added, happy to add a positive voice to your feed. Anyone reading this thread is welcome to add me as well. :)

My reasons have changed over the years. I started running because the 5K events my wife did looked like fun, and her T-shirt collection was better than mine. Then I noticed that long hikes did not hurt as much. So I exercised so that I could play outside longer and with less pain. Then I noticed that my stress level at…

3 egg kimchi omelette most mornings, and I feel healthier than when I was eating breakfast cereal. I have a flock of laying hens, so I have had up to 14 dozen in my fridge at one time!
