  • I get horrific headaches when trying to lose weight if one of two things is happening: (1) I’m not eating healthy fats like nuts, nut butter, olive oil, etc., or (2) I eat under 1700 calories. Yeah yeah, weight loss “requires” 1200-1500 but my body consistently says NOPE, you need a minimum of 1700 to get you through your…
  • Wow, that’s a ton of chia! My go-to is 1/4c oats, 1tbsp chia, 1/4c blended fruit, 1/4c healthy liquid. Keeps me fuller than chia pudding alone and slightly more interesting than standard overnight oats
  • I also use a fitbit HR-- its automatic, less cumbersome than tracking with your phone, and usually fairly accurate
  • When this happens to me, it's usually one of these culprits: dehydration, low-blood sugar, oncoming virus, or not eating enough healthy fats
  • If you want to workout every day, try varying your workouts; do yoga or go running on the non-crossfit days. For one, crossfit is super intense and you don't want to hurt anything (you also want that muscle to build!); for two, your body gets used to routines, so adding some variety will help you get better results in…
  • Go to whichever one will offer the least excuses not to go. I personally ended up at a gym that was stretching my budget because by being on public transit lines I'd have no excuse not to go.
  • I'm sure this will sound generic, but you never know what will work for you, and we're all different! I'd recommend just trying anything you can get your hands on and do it at least three times before writing it off. Jump roping? A hula hoop? HIIT? Barre? Racing people up and down the stairs? Heck, I even took up running…
  • Keep in mind that any surgery--no matter how beneficial--is a trauma to the body; you'll want to give your body and your immune system as much time to heal as you can possibly stand. I went back to my running routine way too early after my wisdom teeth removal and paid for it
  • Vegetarian Times is the best $15 I've ever spent, and their website is pretty good. OhMyVeggies is one of my other favs
  • Add pumpkin or sunflower seeds to salads, nuts to stir-fries, and hemp hearts to just about anything. Warm lentils make a great lunch on beds of cold mixed greens, and cold lentil salads are absolutely delicious. Roasted chickpeas are delicious snacks, and you can make just about any meat dish lower-calorie and…
  • They're a much better alternative to drinking soda, but for your overall health they're not the best in the long run. Artificial sweeteners don't satiate your sweet tooth and still keep your sugar cravings high in general, so they contribute to your desire to reach for other sugary foods and drinks. They also usually…

  • I agree with the blood work recommendation. After I got it done, it turns out I desperately needed a D supplement, and taking it changed my healthy drastically. I'm also a big fan of vitamin C--placeblo or not, I've felt a lot healthier since I started taking high regular doses
  • It works really well for some people, but I've never had much luck. My brain gets too fuzzy and I find it too difficult to work my job or do any problem solving. Personally, I can't afford the luxury of not needing my body and brain in top shape every day. If you do feel like a bit of a "cleanse" I'd reccomend a 24-hour…
  • Reducing caffeine significantly or reducing sugar significantly give me sharp withdrawal-headaches. Not eating enough, however, gives me dull, fuzzy-eyed headaches because I just don't have enough calories to function on. I've also noticed that if I cut back too much on fats, I can get headaches too-- avocados and olive…
  • I used this program this summer and managed my first 5k in August! I strongly reccomend sticking with it-- you'll feel so great when you do, and you're already past the halfway point!
  • The quiet/low-impact ones are the best for me. Everyone is sleeping during the wee hours when I can work out! They're also easy enough to do that there's no excuse not to follow through
  • My body knows better than my brain. I always start my normal workout, and see if I can keep up the pace. If I can't, I stick with the same time but with an easier routine. It's easy for my brain to make excuses, but my muscles will truly "tell" me if I'm genuinely physically drained.
  • I'm a vegetarian butcher's daughter, too! I cut out meat because I just can't digest the stuff, but after half a lifetime of vegetarianism I can't stress "eat everything, and in moderation" enough. Every time I've bought into cutting whole food groups out, or going raw, or whatever, I felt awful after a while. As my…
  • Green salads topped with nuts or tempeh or lean proteins Chopped salads Bruschetta "salad" with a little toast Light pastas with big salads Traditional fries heavy on veggies and light on carbs "hash" with other veggies instead of potatoes Smoothies, when you have no appetite Homemade light potato salads Picnics-- lots of…
  • Big questions! First, this will sound crazy, but I quit caffeine after my first year of college and everything got easier. I was pulling massive credit loads, but it was better to just be tired when I was tired. Giving up caffeine let me sleep better, put my digestive system on track, and made me feel like I had a true…
  • It's more expensive, but I found the Charge HR to be worth it. If you just want to count steps, most $20 pedometers will do the trick. What's lovely about the HR is that because it monitors your heart rate, it's better able to track all activities--cycling doesn't count for many steps, after all!

  • Thanks all!
  • Your body weight fluctuates immensely! If you're dehydrated, extremely hydrated, "backed up," have or haven't eaten, have or haven't exercised, menstruating, etc, your body can fluctuate quite a bit in a few hours or a few days. I strongly recommend weighing yourself weekly, or at least only comparing weekly averages.…
  • I did that just a few weeks ago! Lots of healthy bean dips and hummus with a spoon, yogurt, frozen yogurt, and tons of fruit Popsicles
  • Cook for yourself as much as possible with beans, other legumes, and frozen veggies. Cooking from scratch is actually much cheaper than anything else! At the dining halls, stick to ingredients as much as possible-- get creative at the salad bar, and try to only eat meals where you can tell exactly what went into it. A…
  • Try to avoid the sugary drinks and the mixers. I always eat a VERY filling healthy dinner before going out so I'm less likely to snack on the bad stuff when I'm tipsy.
