  • I was listening to a running podcast the other day and the takeaway (in his terms) was this: “intuitive eating is garbage. Most people who intuitively eat as their way of maintaining their weight can do so because they tracked their food for years and all that tracking taught them appropriate portion sizes, etc. if…
  • MFP is designed so you are supposed to eat your exercise calories. So yes, eat around 1459 today. I find it helpful to look at your average calories over the past 7 days. Do this at the end of the day (and after you’ve already been tracking 7 days) to see if you are hitting your net goal for the week. Weight loss isn’t…
  • To answer your question, I’m not sure. However I wear a Garmin and I have had similar things happen where my Garmin’s estimated burn for the day was high so I was given extra calories that day even though I had a low activity day.
  • I understand getting bored doing cardio, but I think for some people they don’t like it because they are working too hard, thus 5 minutes go by and they are tired and dreading the next 15 minutes. Watching heart rate is good so that you are going at an easy, sustained effort throughout. Once I switched to focusing on…
  • Perhaps it’s councidence? Weight fluctuates so much based on hydration, muscle soreness, etc. For example, I increased my protein at the same time I increased my exercise. I did it intentionally—I wanted extra protein to help my muscles recover from the increased exercise. My weight also went up, but only for a few days,…
  • Everyone gave great replies. I just want to address the mental component here: do not worry about your weight or “losing” your fitness while you recover!! You probably aren’t losing muscle mass yet (weight lost is probably water weight due to the fact that your muscles have had time to repair themselves and thus don’t need…
  • I highly recommend Ascent protein powder (I don’t find it chalky AT ALL— first protein powder I actually look forward to!), especially the lemon sorbet flavor and the chocolate peanut butter. I also highly recommend Built Bars for protein bars. The consistency is more like a candy bar with real chocolate coating and a…
  • @RunnerGirl238 MCM is so fun! I did it last year and actually liked it more than my first marathon which was Disney! @midwesterner85 I’ve never been to Chicago so I’m certainly looking forward to it! @slbbw that makes a lot of sense of adding a few extra calories around the long run day. I’ll definitely keep that in mind!…
  • Another thing I’ve been doing that helps to stay closer to my calorie goal while eating out is to order steak! They can only make steak so unhealthy and it usually comes with veggies and a potato so you can normally keep the calories lower than many of the other dishes. For me, it means I feel like I’m splurging having…
  • Your daily deficit goes to 300 instead of 500 calories? Or your total calories in for the week is now 300 less than calories out? I find the nutrition tab where it shows net calories compared to the weekly goal helpful. In my case, I’m set to 0.5 lb per week and so I check the net calories over the week and try to make…
  • Had to laugh at all the “blame the in-laws” sentiments but the bed is pretty likely. Just wasn’t sure if extra sugar could cause headaches too.
  • I weigh in almost every day. Honestly, seeing the scale go up after a bad eating day doesn’t bother me (I anticipate it) but what frustrates me more is when the scale is up after a day of clean eating and working out. I know it’s because my muscles are sore (and thus my body needs more water to repair them) but I find that…
  • My crossfit gym is an amazing community! We embrace scaling and the coaches know us all so well to help us pick appropriate weights and modifications until we are ready to move on to more difficult (Rx) versions. Some days if my legs are tired from running, I might go lighter in a workout and I know I’m still getting a…
  • Like others have said, I wouldn’t worry about your schedule (it’s not worth the stress). Plenty of people live healthy lives on weird schedules. Be as consistent as you can with whatever schedule you have and work on hitting your goals that MFP gives you for calories, macros, etc. and you will absolutely lose the weight!…
  • Check the row2k.com classified section for used Concept2’s if that’s what you decide you want. Sometimes you can get them for as cheap as half price in great condition—but they go fast!
  • @AnnPT77 had some great advice. I am very much Team Garmin. I have a Forerunner 235 that I happen to wear all the time because I love the data it tracks, but it is specifically a running watch. My husband has the Vivoactive and it tracks a lot more activities than mine (like flights of stairs, various activity modes, etc)…
  • @witchaywoman81 I checked their website and I was able to custom order but it said the nutrition info was based on the standard recipe 🤷🏼‍♀️
  • @Panini911 thanks! I’m surprised all syrups are the same but this is helpful! I kept looking for a chart like that in the US but I imagine it is close enough. Maybe someday apps can customize nutrition info for drinks but I’ll have to work with this.
  • I know this is a common fear but I want to tell you that no one at the gym cares or is going to judge you for your weight. They are too busy working on themselves! And after going for a few times (3-5) if you still feel uncomfortable, find a different gym.
  • I agree with what else has been said about your body adjusting to exercise. I also want to add that if you went from no exercise to running every day, be careful not to overdo it and get an injury from doing too much too soon! Give your body rest days to recover.
  • @Laura48593 that was so helpful, thank you! I think you’re right, a lot of it does come down to my husband making better choices and deciding how to handle his folks. Fortunately my parents are local and so we don’t really have to worry about a whole weekend (or longer) eating according to their schedule. And @bumbambi you…
  • @elisa123gal I’m not talking about going over for dinner at a friends house. I’m talking about staying with my in-laws for a few days where they often go out of the way to get us foods they know we like but are not good for us. It’s not really feasible to bring our own dish for the whole weekend and if anything I feel like…
  • Thanks for all the different points of view! I agree with the sentiment that it’s not their business which is why I haven’t said anything at this point to them. But, as @mmultanen said, I do think food is the family’s way to show love and like @kimny72 points out, I don’t want to upset them. It’s probably my husbands place…
  • @TavistockToad thanks. I’m pretty good about limiting the snacks. My husband has a hard time with it not just because it’s his favorite foods but then the guilt of his family going out of the way to please him when he visits. 🤷🏼‍♀️
  • @TavistockToad Yes, I can order healthier choices when we go out. But then they will make a big pancakes and bacon breakfast or pick up bagels and pizza (my husband is from New York originally so they know he can’t get “good” ones at home) and stock up on tons of snacks (cookies, chips, ice cream, etc) that they know we…
  • Exactly! And I don’t want to give up on that skillet cookie for the rest of my life, so I may as well embrace it on rare occasion and have a healthier day otherwise! I’m sure for some people they see the calories and feel like a failure for that day, but I see it as being human.
  • 🙌 I went out to chilis last night and it was Valentine’s Day so we didn’t go overboard but ate what we wanted to eat. Logged it today and it turns out my dinner was 2600 calories! Yikes! 🙈 Of course this is after I finally talked my husband into tracking his food to be healthier too. Whoops! But in the long run, just being…
  • Some people follow the “don’t eat after 7” rule as a rule to help them do a 12 hour fast. If fasting is something you want to implement to help with digestion, then work backwards 12 hours from when you normally eat your first meal of the day and that’s when you would stop eating the night before. Some people also follow…
  • Check this out: https://www.mensjournal.com/health-fitness/10-foam-roller-moves-your-entire-body/ Be warned, it does hurt at first! When I’m training for a marathon, I foam roll my legs after my long runs and it makes a world of difference in my recovery!
  • It’s expensive, BUT I would highly recommend either an on ramp class/short term membership at a crossfit box or time with a personal trainer. The reason I say this is because I learned so much about form when I started crossfit 2 years ago and the coaches at my gym are so knowledgeable in how to modify movements and they…
