  • Then why don't they always ask for your job title* at doctor's visits? I mean that's data, right? Seriously, it's impractical to get even all the relevant data, nevermind all the data, so I'm happy to trust that the medical professional will ask for appropriate relevant data until a solution is found, unless I receive an…
  • 4 woos for that? Why!? Maybe the almond milk wasn't the best suggestion (thanks to the person below me) although it still has some calories so not total nonsense...
  • I don't recall the doctor taking any of those measurements in the ~3 times I've been since I was 16. They weren't relevant to the problem at hand so I wouldn't expect them to take all that time to do it! OP, maybe trying drinking some calories if the problem is that you feel full - almond milk, or a smoothie with seeds/nut…
  • That sort of thing can only work if most people fail. Not especially encouraging. It is also presumably over a very long time period - so you can always catch up "tomorrow". Until tomorrow is the day you lose! I use beeminder, which admittedly doesn't have the carrot of winning, but does encourage you to make consistent…
  • It's up to you. If you find it easier, you can not eat 1 day a week and eat at maintenance the rest of the week. Then you'd lose about a pound a week on that maintenance level. The trick is not to eat more the day after because you're starving!
  • I ran when I was away with my parents. It helped balance things out, since mom especially was worn out after ~7k steps, whereas I still had energy to spare after that and my run. If I was going with one of my friends, maybe not - depends on the activity. We often do some pretty decent hikes which is plenty!
  • The flip side of that equation is that people who pay taxes have an arbitrary amount of money taken away from them to pay for this stuff. Everyone is subject to the arbitrary. There are always two sides to it - we have to find a balance.
  • I feel like there are a few steps of logic missing between "food stamps should be restricted to XYZ" and "people who receive food stamps don't deserve treats"... one doesn't follow from the other - care to elaborate how you reached that conclusion?
  • Depends - if you're lugging a contrabass saxophone around maybe. If it's a piccolo, probably not.
  • Why would you not eat the yolks? What are you going to do with them afterwards?
  • Can you get an indoor bike? Or otherwise do cardio outside? I do sympathise with your predicament. Flats are horrible. How softly is it possible to land when jumping? I can't see anyway of doing it without bothering the folks below you.
  • Nuts are pretty calorie dense and they're definitely not processed. So are oils and and grains if they're counted as "not processed" (unsure what the OP means by that; everyone has their own definition). Fruit can get pretty easy to overeat on if it's cooked. Drinking full fat milk. All sorts of ways to get extra calories…
  • Even if you added on all the higher level executive salaries I doubt you'd get much further than £20 a month. I'm happy enough to sacrifice that amount of pay for the organisational structure and benefits that come with that.
  • Try it out closer to home until you're more comfortable; if something doesn't work out you might appreciate being able to get home more quickly! Lean more towards route safety if ice is an issue (treated and/or sufficiently well trodden) - I've found a shortish route that tends to be decent enough and I prefer to do that…
  • I think part of my problem with raising the minimum wage to a "living wage" level can be expressed by the question "how much is a living wage?". Is that full time - how many hours? Is it the same in every city, or in more rural areas? Should it be enough to support a family - do both parents need to work - how many kids…
  • I sometimes "share" a takeaway with my dinner tomorrow; that works reasonably well if I pack up tomorrow's half straight away. Also, I occasionally go on an hours run after work and whack the pizza in the oven while I'm showering.
  • I think the wall is a stupid idea.. but to at least try and be positive - folks are gonna get paid to build it. That beats food stamps or even cash handouts any day. I really think we should be aiming to build society up such that rubbish minimum wage jobs are genuinely entry level. Then the exact form of assistance…
  • Elderflower is tasty though! So got to win over the charcoal on that alone...
  • Nothing is risk free. Absolutely nothing. Everyone needs to decide for themselves what level of risk they feel is appropriate in which domains. It sounds like your coworker is exploring how long they can fast for gradually, so I'd let them be, and assume that they're a responsible adult who will eat sooner than faint for…
  • Eh? It's just food that doesn't need chilling to remain safe to eat for a sensible amount of time. Like sweets , cakes or dry pasta.
  • I think the 1200 isn't just recommended not to lose weight too fast, but to make sure you're not missing out on vitamins/minerals that you need. Pain is not good - especially sharp pain! Maybe yoga is a little much at the moment - you could try incorporating a little more walking around the house/household tasks/hobbies…
  • I think once they've been kept in the fridge you shouldn't take them out until you're using them, because the change in temperature can cause bacteria to get through the shell. Obviously if they're chilled in the shop then they need that at home too, but in the UK they're never chilled in the shop because they're not…
  • I quite like Taizé style prayer, and there's also Ignatian spirituality for those of a christian persuasion. But actually - I find exercise is the best for me, so no matter how stressed and busy I get, I only stop running when I'm ill or it's icy out (I'm too good at falling over). Those knocked me out for a few weeks…
  • I still can't find it... nevermind. I'm probably being blind! I'm not suprised at all by your last line. I mean, really, if someone snapped up a sentence of a private conversation in a different language, translated it and broadcast it far and wide, would we really be suprised when people got the wrong end of the stick…
  • I think that's a different article.
  • Thanks for that. The charge is on the first link from the article. I'm guessing you have access through a workplace somehow? I'm not suprised my university isn't subscribed, we don't do medicine.
  • Actually, they can't. I haven't got $35.95 to buy the article and it isn't available through my institutional access. And they've linked it in such a way that the link is highly likely to break in forseeable future, with absolutely no further information that might help a reader in a couple of years from now find it. As I…
  • Smoked salmon and scrambled eggs is a pretty traditional breakfast in Scotland! I really like a lot of asian cuisines, and they don't have separate foods for breakfast. Knock yourself out :) @rockyhi512 - I find ~300kcal works great for me for breakfast. It's usually only a few hours until lunch. Each to their own :)
  • To lose weight - the same stuff you used to buy, but less of it. Instantly cheaper than before! To be healthier - that depends on what you're currently eating. Make 1 small change at a time to see if you like it and avoid waste if you don't. Dried and frozen fruits and veggies are often cheaper and last longer.
  • It sounds like you're a little bit overwhelmed from your post, and I'm not surprised since there is so much information out there! The thing is, you don't have to be perfect. Just start with where you're at, and try to make next week healthier than the last. As you need to lose weight, probably the best place to start is…
