  • Hah, anyone attempting to swipe something I've meticulously weighed and accounted for risks losing a hand! Probably best that I do not have any children because they'd have NO chance of swiping any!
  • I'm not sure how much it would help if people aren't already counting calories. But I'd like to see it! When I go out to eat, sometimes I've eaten very little earlier in the day to 'save' the calories and have a decent amount to 'spend', but don't like playing the guessing game. And if I've decided to have a 'treat' day,…
  • Roughly 50% - I find that MapMyWalk (and pretty much any other walking app I've tried) overestimates. I'd argue it massively overestimates, though my settings are correct. So I usually eat back about 50%, but if it makes sense, I give myself the option to eat them all. My calorie goal is set lower than some people have…
  • This is the main thing that worries me about losing weight. I really, really don't want to look older. I don't have lines, I don't have wrinkles, and I like it that way. You know what I've noticed, though? The people I know who have lost a huge amount of weight, the vast majority of them don't look older for it. They look…
  • One of my relatives always gives the "I don't eat much, it's my metabolism" argument. Then when we were serving up ice-cream and my portion was relatively small, I couldn't help saying "You do know how many calories are in this, don't you?" Turned out her guess was off by 50%. Think I might have found the problem... I've…
  • People saying "Nobody ever keeps the weight off. Just look at <Biggest Loser Person, Friend-Who-Gained-Back>." Saving calories on purpose so that I can have chocolate and a glass of wine at the end of the day, only for someone to say "You'll never lose weight if you do that". I want to scream at them. Biggest Loser Person…
  • A lot of people mention using a food scale as being good because it can stop you underestimating. But you know what, I also find it useful to stop me from OVER estimating. I discovered that when I was logging 100g of new potatoes, I was not actually serving myself 100g because I was SO concerned about going over that I…
  • The only people I know who say they're using it, are the people selling it. I don't actually believe them.
  • I actually really enjoyed this show. In fact, I thought it could have gone a bit further, been a bit darker. My only problem with it was that it seemed to dither between whether to be a teen comedy or a properly dark comedy. Focussing on the latter would make it way more fun.
  • I've always insisted I have heavy bones. They're also covered in far too much fat, but I've always weighed more than anyone expects. For example I have a friend who is a man, six inches taller and considerably wider - and I'm a full stone heavier than he is. I think maybe what it actually is, is that my weight is evenly…
  • I'm just keeping the adjustments synced from my Apple Watch. The last time I was on MFP, I entered my walks but I felt it gave me way too many calories for the exercise I was doing. The Apple Watch seems like more reasonable figures.
  • My own doctor never mentions it - but to be fair, I rarely see a doctor. A while ago I had to see a different doctor (in a different clinic) to ask for a particular prescription (completely unrelated to weight) and they made me get weighed and measured, and then the doctor, without asking any questions about why I was…
  • It's ridiculous things like the ones listed here that make me detest the very word 'serving'. Too many times I've seen something like a bag of popcorn with one of those 'obviously marketed for dieters' names and 'Only 90 calories!' on the front, only to pick it up and realise that there are supposed to be three 'servings'…
  • Daily, but only because I use a separate app which smooths out fluctuations. I log mainly there and log once or twice a week here. Previously I tried only weighing in once a week but found it very difficult not to get discouraged if there was a gain. Weighing daily, I can see more clearly how things fluctuate which helps…
  • Thanks folks. I know I have to do it...I'm lucky to have dodged the various health bullets so far. And even if my vanity protests at the thought of looking older, I'm only making it worse by waiting. I've got a gym membership and have been in a couple of times - treadmill and bike only so far, though they have a pool that…
  • You look fantastic - and I absolutely love that dress!
  • I got on the scales! I knew I was fat, but I hadn't realised that I was a good 20lbs heavier than I thought I was. And as I'm in my early forties, I decided I'd better sort myself out before the 'change' hits and it becomes more difficult. Not to mention that I'm healthy NOW but can't expect that to continue if my bad…
  • The zombies thing - that's how I got into running, and depending on what works to keep your mind going it might work for you. There's an app called 'Zombies, Run' which essentially puts you as the supply runner for a survivor group in the zombie apocalypse. The stories are fantastic, full cast and audio effects, and you…
  • As with other people, I find if I eat breakfast - any breakfast - it sets me off and I'm hungry all day. If I eat breakfast at 7 I'll be hungry at 9 and ready to roast and eat my colleagues by 10:30. I usually have a large glass of water first thing, then have something at around 10 - that seems to be the earliest I can go…
  • I've always struggled with the whole 'only weigh yourself once a week' thing that I've always been told. If I weigh myself once a week it builds up in my mind to a big 'reward' thing that I'm working towards, so a gain is devastating. In the past, I've tried to lose weight and it's been fine while the scale went down, but…
  • Apologies if this info is out of date, but the last time I signed up for MFP to try to lose weight everyone was big on the 'Are you drinking enough?' thing and saying that being dehydrated could cause issues. Maybe track your water intake as well for a while if you're not doing so already just to make sure?
  • I know when I go for a walk and use my Apple Watch, then see what calories MFP would have given me for the same walk, it's always at least 2x what the Apple Watch does. Starting to suspect the MFP estimates may have been partially to blame for why I couldn't lose much last time I tried this!
  • I was planning on having a day, maybe every couple of weeks, where I just keep to maintenance calories instead of my usual goal. For the record, mine are around 2250 at the moment. Had the first of these on Saturday, and it felt much better to continue to track and know that I still wasn't pushing myself into 'gain' mode…
