  • Any experiences to share? I'm sure lots of local people have great and not so great experiences to share (I have 'em too, for dental care in the US). It's hard for a person to find reputable practitioners in foreign countries--it's hard enough to find them in your own country! I wouldn't just randomly pick an American…
  • I got up to run early this week--before sunrise--bc the mosquitos and gnats are so bad later in the day. I felt wonderful allllllll day. I had forgotten how much I love morning runs! And you are so right--it is all about what works for you!
  • Could you manage a desk pedal?
  • My mini-goal is to adapt to healthier eating. My sugar intake is way too high and my weight loss has stalled. I’m hoping to get back on track by focusing on less sugar and fewer total calories. That means more planning and prepping. I have to keep my eyes on the prize bc this is much harder than just “eating less.” I have…
  • Just a random thought or two. Slow down your runs. If you want to keep running to enjoy the health benefits but don’t care about “training,” running slower is fine and more relaxing. If you like sprinting, take up soccer or basketball. I HATE sprinting—until you put a ball in front of me. Then, OMG, I’m like a dog; “Get…
  • My NSV: I meal prepped and cooked like a pro. 4 quiche (only one is for my household); spare ribs; sweet potato chickpea chili; Moroccan Chicken Olive Tagine; and a kale-tomato-red onion salad for about 4 meals. I cooked the ribs and the quiche and prepped the other two for the crock pot later this week. Kept accurate…
  • For me, it is the work involved. I hate to cook, to plan. I could lose weight while living off processed foods and fast foods, but I’m always hungry then and I overeat. I’ve discovered I don’t seem to mind doing a lot of prep on Sunday, though, and that + frequent use of my slow cooker really helps. Something that a lot of…
  • If you are seeing the gains and changes you want, I would not worry about it. You do not have to hurt to make progress (contrary to popular belief). My legs are tired after a run but recover quickly and I rarely have DOMS.
  • I was pulling on a pair of jeans and realized, "These aren't mine." I didn't think they'd fit, but they did--and a size 16, when last time I wore jeans, they were an 18 or 20. I found out I had pinched them from my sis--was staying at her house, did our laundry, and packed her pants with my stuff when I left. I sent her…
  • You are doing well! Good for you. The walking will help with a lot of the weight-related health problems even before you lose a lot of weight; you will probably develop some muscle, but not more than a pound or two, over time, and probably not quickly enough to mask weight loss. Inflammation and water retention with new…
  • I hope you are feeling better. I just wanted to add that when my stress level gets high, I cannot eat--so perhaps that is also affecting you, and you think it is the medication. But how long does that take to kick in? Many take weeks and it might not be the meds. Just a thought--if you've had it before, you may know my…
  • First, sodium isn't a goal--it's a max. Were you tracking it before you started here? Usually that water weight is due in part to a decrease in the amount of sodium/processed foods you eat. For people who routinely ate out, ate a lot of processed foods, etc, to change to more eating at home, eating fewer processed foods,…
  • I've been a runner since the mid-70s. For many years, I was in great shape and ran 5-8 miles about 5 days a week. Didn't need to lose weight at that time. I took up running to combat depression; it really helped. Fast forward to my late 30s and a difficult, high risk pregnancy--and a nearly 100 lb weight gain. The…
  • I tend to eat the same foods a lot, so I started taking a multivitamin last year, at age 58. No idea if it helps at all. Seeing the answers here, maybe I should do a little research.
  • I agree—leaving work snacks at work helps me avoid getting into them at home. Depending on what you like and where you work,, you can even order online and have some delivered to work—assuming you have a place to keep them. I’d recommend investing in glass containers with lids, though, to prevent attracting mice or…
  • Hey, OP, without knowing your stats ( age, height, current weight, at a minimum) and what kinds of exercise and actual eating you are doing, it is hard to give good advice. Over-restricting can be the problem, but maybe it is related to bad habits, a lack of good habits, triggers in your life, or a combination of these and…
  • My gorgeous trail area was flooded this week and "closed indefinitely." I'm so sad, and running today on the sidewalks and roads was hard on my legs--possibly a mental thing, b/c I run them in winter (Madison, WI, so cold and ice are a thing) and don't have problems. Really going to miss my trail runs! ETA: I ran inside…
  • --if your child didn't finish it, and you do, it doesn't have calories. --if you burn the toast a little, it will have fewer calories. --if no one sees you eat it, it doesn't have any calories. This is, of course, the bad diet "advice" (lies) I gave myself. I'm sure you all have your own, and I know I have many more.
  • Awesome feedback.
  • You haven't said what exercise you normally do, but I would encourage you to start back on that while exploring what else is going on. And do not try to start "back to normal" workouts. Just promise yourself you'll do 5 minutes, or whatever--b/c once you get going, you are likely to continue. And BE OK with just a few…
  • There's a model who posted pics showing herself posed and unposed, and of course it demonstrated what everyone is saying. In the posed pic, she appears to be 100% lean and sculpted. In the relaxed pic, her belly poofs out and even has a roll b/c she's bent over a bit. I'm sorry I can't remember her name--but just know…
  • I would not have recommended an elliptical machine for someone in your position. When you can walk 30 minutes or so at a decent pace (3 mph, for example), then consider starting a machine. If the elliptical is working for you, great, but it really seems like too much too soon, even at a very slow pace, for someone who has…
  • Since no one has said it yet, I will: 1100 is too few calories for any women. The minimum is 1200 and sustained dieting under that is very unhealthy. At your weight, losing even 1.5 lbs/week is unrealistic b/c you don't have much to lose. You should adjust your expectations to losing about .5 lbs a week, and eat a…
  • I believe muscle loss is a greater risk for anyone losing more than 1% of body weight per week. OP, you are safe on that score and should do what works best for you.
  • To get an even better reaction, start telling people you are 65! Haha. Congrats on your NSV.
  • In Wisconsin, we have to renew licenses every eight years, with new pics. I did mine last year and put my actual weight on it. Then gained about 15. Today I'm back at the weight on my license. I'm proud I was not too ashamed to put my real weight. Also, yesterday I went running in the am and then went kayaking in the…
  • I had a wonderful today tha was 100% enjoyable for the whole time because I slowed down. Sometimes I get caught up in seeing if I can go faster, and that takes the fun right out of it! I may think about improving speed a little when I can run an hour with no discomfort. I’ve a ways to go. And no worries about it, either!
  • Baked chips. Yuck. That’s the only thing that came to mind!
  • Good for you, using your skills and fitness for a very good cause. I hadn't heard about this. Let's hope she is found safe and relatively sound.
  • @luluinca I want to be walking and maybe even jogging still at age 100--so anything that gets in the way of that is no good, in my book. Many choices are simplified for me by looking at everything through that lens. YMMV :) Have fun!
