I've been very against gyms ever since I realised that most of the machines in the Gym could be substituted in every day life eg cycling/running. The only low impact exercise I can think of is swimming. As long as you're physically okay to do exercise as advised by your doctor.

Where you on a very restrictive diet? I found that usually was my problem as I found it unsustainable... if not then could it be that you put on muscle whilst exercising that was causing you to gain weight? Remember that gaining weight doesn't always mean that you're gaining extra fat tissue x
