I hear you. My doctor tells me that this is the natural "settling" of the both gender's bodies with age. I think in my case I was focused on other thing in the last year (family hospitalizations...and there's not a lot to do in hospitals other than eat, not sleep and worry) and so many of my good routines feel by the…

Thanks! I love free weights, but since menopause (where I gained my menopowers of being a generally more mellow person with the seemingly contradictory power to care a lot less about what other people think of me), that whole mid-section of me looks like it belongs to a person several sizes larger than I I've signed up for…

Oops, I think that I should have been more specific...not carbs such as fruits/veggies, but those processed carbs. I eat quinoa, kasha and farro, e.g. My all time favorite type of meal is: vegetable, protein, unprocessed grain. I like volume, crunch and diverse flavors, so I can get all three with a bowl of lean protein,…

Yes, I know it sounds like torture but that is what I was doing (of course, I wasn't doing much of anything else other than going to classes...!)

What I would suggest: Cut out the flour and the sugar. Not because I think either of those is evil, but because I find it is really easy to overeat products made with flour and sugar and still not fill satisfied. I find it very easy to smack down 3 slices of bread for about 300 calories. Without that option, I'm eating…

Coming back...yes, I think what worked before (eyeballing largely) is no longer working now that I'm post menopausal. I've started weighing my food (before just either eyeballing or uses spoons/cups...and there is a slight decrease in weight. I miss my 25 year old metabolism that could be fueled on pizza, flavored yogurt,…

I've been a vegetarian most of my adult life, and for some reason this seems to really bother friends, and strangers. I've heard long tirades about the need for meat for protein, accusations that I don't really understand the pyramid of nature, emphatic statements about the toxicity of carrots, since they grow in polluted…

Lisas: Yes, I think that is something I need to start doing. I'm a vegetarian, but I'l have to investigate this. Can I ask if you have a certain carb number you try not to exceed each day?

About 3 months.

I love MumTum! I'll send you a message to friend.

Yep, read that as well. Also, there were some good letters to the editor today one of which pointed out that in academic circles (the writer was at Brown) how it was a matter of principle not to be influenced by beauty ideals. I think there has to be a balance, and one which we chose ourselves. How much head space do I…

I waffle (hmmm, waffle) around 5 lbs, so I'm going to start from now and move forward. Right now: 151 lbs. May goal: Get and stay under 150. Ultimate Goal: 125 lbs. Ultimate fitness goal: To be first in my age class next time I do the Hustle Up the Hancock (my 11th Hustle). I've had one medical event (sinus surgery,…

Love it! Thanks for keeping this going.

Also, not to get all ranty, but aren't we trained from girlhood to look for our flaws? Would a single women's magazine be sold if the message was: You look good. If you are interested in trying something new, here's an article. I stopped reading women's fitness magazines lately and subscribe to Men's Health. The message…

I hear you. I have to think about my "why"...why am I doing what I do. And, that has changed over time. The why I've settled on is: I want to be fierce. Not Conan the Barbarian fierce, but strong, agile, with enough physical stamina to do what I want to do every day of my life. That isn't dependent upon the way I look, it…

Welcome! My story is almost identical to yours, though I'm older (and it gets better the longer you live...no one tells you that until you're on the other side of 50!). My focus is also on fitness. About 10 year ago, I started doing a charity stair climb, and my goal is to best my time every year. This last year was my…

I make "bowls": a healthy grain, a protein, vegetables. I'll make a batch of enough cooked grains in a rice cooker to last 2 days, defrost some packaged vegetables and put them in Pyrex containers uncooked, and buy some pre prepared proteins (I'm a vegetarian, so this means frozen veggie burgers, eg.). Dinner is heating up…

No. I gain and lose first in my belly, and since I tend to dress very comfortably, it isn't noticeable.
-
I've have friends heavier than I, and fitter/leaner than I. I don't expect anyone to change themselves for me. So, perhaps assume your friends are the same.
-
May I suggest: Don't keep what you find makes you feel bad about your choices in the house. If I have to get dressed, get my purse, drive to a store and buy it...it diminishes the chances that I will buy it. If you are craving salt, buy some whole popcorn kernels, a cheap popcorn maker, and make yourself a big bowl of…

Also, restarting: 151 Goal is 125. This time round I"m 1) eliminating sugar, flour and wheat...all of which seem to trigger bingey eating for me. 2) reducing processed food to as close to zero as I can get...amazing how much food is processed, more amazing how much of it I eat. 3) Weighing and measuring my food. I'm 5 ft 8…

Welcome! This is a great group!

I hear you. My body looks good, except for that "belt" of what I'll kindly call fluff around my middle. The only time I've actually been able to get that tight, trim look was when my bodyfat was under 18%. That required me to do one hour of cardio daily, work out with heavy weights, and reduce my fat intake to no more than…

Also, I would add this: I think that there is a thing with women (maybe men as well...but I know more women), kind of a dance: Oh, I need to lose weight. No, you don't. You're so skinny. Yes, I need to eat better. No, you're the healthiest eater I know. No woman has ever said to me: Yep, you're right. You are looking kind…

I've finally started doing this. It forces me to "pause" and think: Do I really need this? Or, am I getting ready to eat this because I'm bored, tired or stressed.
-
For me, the goal is less weight than health. I want to eat as healthy a diet as I can: vegetables, fruits, whole grains, appropriate protein. I find that when I focus on whole foods (reducing processed foods to treats), I take in fewer calories, I have more energy and I don't think constantly about food.
-
I don't look for support where I feel or know support will not be given. With my friends who are health/diet conscious, I can have great discussions about our shared goals and interests, but with others, I can always find some other topic we can find mutually interesting.
-
Feel free to add me. I can't bear to look at the scale, but I know that when my loose pants seem to be strangling me, it is time to recommit!
-
I've been absent for a touch. I was Wally Amadeus previously, but since I upgraded my Garmin and had to re-register for reasons too boring to describe, I am now Formerly Wally Amadeus. If any of my prior friends would like to friend me, that would be awesome! Starting: 155 Current: 148.8 March goal: 147 I'm 5 ft 8ish…

I don't think "approaching" girls at the gym is going to be well received. I'm happily married and I don't always wear my wedding ring when I work out since I'm afraid that I'm going to leave it somewhere in the locker room after showering. So, not only does a direct approach seem a little stalker like, but you might be…
